Rodeo: Real Gay Cowboys and Brokeback Mountain

By Patricia Nell Warren

Just as Brokeback Mountain hit movie theaters in early 2006, The Learning Channel cable network launched Beyond the Bull, a reality-based series dedicated to profiling world champion bull riders as regular guys who were belt-buckle deep in wives, kids, girlfriends, and groupies. Was Beyond the Bull a propaganda move timed to counter Brokeback’s gay cowboys? Especially twenty-year-old Jack Twist, the gay rodeo rider played by Jake Gyllenhaal?

Rodeo is one of our most American sports, with roots as deep as baseball’s. As an action-packed extreme sport, rodeo lends itself easily to TV and is now routinely covered on ESPN. The sport reached exhibition status at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and even had its own TV reality show—Cowboy U–which aired for four years on Country Music Television.

The film Brokeback Mountain, based on the short story by Annie Proulx, became an overnight cultural icon—and the film also kicked up a political dust storm. After all, right-wingers view the cowpoke as a core symbol who embodies the purest in heterosexual family values. One Christian blogger screamed, “Now they’re out to destroy the American legend of the cowboy. God help us, and John Wayne forgive us!” In Congress, Senators from sagebrush states pushed a resolution to declare the fourth Saturday of each July the “National Day of the American Cowboy.”

Meanwhile, some contestants on the rodeo scene assured the media that, in all their years around the arenas, they’d never met a real-life Jack Twist.

I had to smile at all this denial. I grew up on a historic Montana cattle ranch that was steeped in cowboy tradition. Few occupations in America’s history have been more conducive to secret man-to-man love than cowboying. Indeed, frontier men may have gravitated to this job so they could enjoy the company of other males.

If gay cowboys have never been visible in professional rodeo, it’s because the sport has become so conservative that it makes the NFL look like the ACLU. Judging by what we know of other sports, there must be a few closet cases among the world champions of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Professional Bull Riders (PBR). But so far no one has dared to come out.

Dirty Dangerous Work ~ Rodeo is said to be “the only sport that grew out of an industry”—meaning the vast nineteenth-century livestock business that flourished west of the Mississippi, from Mexico north to Canada. To find the roots of gay rodeo riders—and gay rodeo itself—we have to dig in this soil of the Old West.

NYC’s Biggest Latino Newspaper Backs Gay Marriage

On the heels of New York Democrat State Senator Ruben Diaz’s anti-gay equality march set for the same day as the Manhattan AIDS Walk, El Diario New York City’s largest Hispanic and Latino newspaper has published an editorial supporting gay marriage. ...

Let’s see what El Diario had to say:

New York needs and is ready for this change. Our gay population is bigger than the seven nearby jurisdictions (six states plus the District of Columbia) that have legalized same-sex marriage. And close to 60 percent of New Yorkers support gay marriage.

Governor Cuomo’s campaign merits all the the support of the Latino community, including those who are opposed for religious reasons. Officials in this position should remember that they were elected to serve the public (independent of its sexual orientation) under American laws, which were established with a clear distinction between church and state. Latinos should also remember our collective fight is against discrimination and marginalization.

Homosexuality is a human reality. The majority of New Yorkers have a friend, colleague or relative who’s gay. It’s time to give these people the opportunity to develop families and build communities. Our government shouldn’t be in the business of telling the people who to love or who to marry.

An Open Letter to My Undergraduate Institution

Dear Fellow Fans,

Yes, I know you hate the West Virginia University Mountaineers. I know WVU has been one of our biggest athletic rivals since the 1890s. Heck, I even know that WVU fans have a history of throwing objects at our players and coaches. But do you really think it’s okay to call them the “Brokeback Mountaineers” or the “Mountainqueers?”

We’ve always prided ourselves on making clever jibes at our athletic opponents. But these names are hateful and homophobic. My guess is that we’re trying to comment on WVU’s lesser athletic prowess, that WVU is emasculated because of their inferior athletic abilities and therefore “queer.” We might not have homophobic intentions, but by using LGBT terms to refer to things we dislike and things that aren’t “masculine” enough, we’re still making a homophobic statement. We’re like all those seventh graders who go around saying, “That test was sooo gay.”

Our school seemed like a fairly tolerant campus, so these names are, at first, kind of surprising. But really, how accepting is our student body? There’s a difference between tolerance and acceptance. American society has become more tolerant: it largely condemns homophobic actions and words and no longer treats LGBT citizens as “deviants” or criminals. It’s one thing to change policy, but quite another to change deeply entrenched attitudes. Even though the LGBT community is tolerated, I don’t think it’s been fully accepted yet. I think that “Brokeback Mountaineers” is a symptom of this failure of acceptance. America has come so far in recognizing the rights of LGBT citizens, but we’ve also got a long way to go.

In the meantime, it’d do us some good to stop using “queer,” and “gay” as derogatory terms. By becoming aware of the painful history of violence and hatred implicit in these names, our society might take one step closer toward acceptance. So, stop. You’re a smart bunch, and I challenge you to come up with some wittier, less bigoted names—just in time for football season.

Yours truly,

An alumna

Larry McMurtry Gets Hitched in Texas

Faye Kesey, the widow of Oregon author Ken Kesey, married another well-known writer, Larry McMurtry, in McMurtry's hometown of Archer City, Texas, on April 29, the day of the royal wedding. Faye Kesey is 76. McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Lonesome Dove" and many other novels, is 74.

McMurtry and Ken Kesey were classmates in the graduate writing program at Stanford University in the late 1950s. Kesey became famous when his first novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," was published in 1962 and became a successful Broadway play. McMurtry's first novel, "Horseman, Pass By," was published a year earlier. He went on to write 44 books and numerous screenplays, including the Academy Award-winning "Brokeback Mountain." Kesey stopped writing for several years after his second novel, "Sometimes a Great Notion," was published in 1964. He died in 2001.

McMurtry and Faye Kesey were married in a civil ceremony and are said to be on their honeymoon. Karren Winter, the county clerk in Archer City, told the Dallas Morning News that the couple was "truly happy, they’re very sweet. It was really good to see Larry look so happy. They were just the sweetest couple coming in to get their marriage license.”

Rodeo Tales: "Wanting to make the whistle, I hung on anyway and wound up under the bull"

By jim.grrr

So, when, as you are pulling on a brand new pair of Wranglers to go bullriding and that little voice in your head tells you that this is just asking for it, you really should listen.

Coming back from the Desert Regional Trauma Center.
Notice the rip in the right jeans leg. Those hooves are sharp!

Had a rigging malfunction and my bullrope rolled around the bull. Wanting to make the whistle, I hung on anyway and wound up under the bull while he continued to buck on top of me. (4.6 seconds) Got both legs real good. My right calf will have a scar to remember him by. (The only permanent injury.) Even my privates are black and blue. Since there are no titanium screws, plates or pins, this doesn't qualify as a serious bullriding injury.

The Chute and Arena Crews and Officials (all amateurs) were awesome. When I was on the ground with the bull still bucking on top of me, someone shouted "MOVE HERE," which caused me to drag myself by my elbows out from under the bull. All the crew and officials surrounded me, pulled me to my feet and kept me safe until the bull was out of the arena. Made it out of the Arena walking, supported by the shoulders of the Arena Director and a crew member. While sitting on a stretcher, with my jeans around my ankles, being examined by the EMTs, a photographer walked by and asked to snap a pic. I said sure if he'd send a copy. Sadly, he chickened out. That would have been this year's Xmas card. Aaron, my safety, drove he back to the hotel in the pickup. Wasn't feeling any better the next day, so went in to get checked out. Every thing will be fine.

All in all, it was an awesome weekend.

Shouldn't be any problem getting in shape for San Francisco Rodeo September 9-11th. It's going to be on Treasure Island this year. Should be quite a party.

J

PS: Just so you don't get the idea I think I'm tough, another rider, who was dragged around the arena bouncing on the dirt with his spur hooked in his bullrope,  rode the next day. I stayed home. Who says Gay Rodeo isn't real Rodeo?

County Counter Extraordinaire

Fritz Keppler (DC forum member fritzkep) of Arlington, Virginia recently discovered my humble Twelve Mile Circle blog as he searched for the boundaries of the Sandoval County exclave. He’s quickly become a regular reader and contributor in the comments section over the last few weeks. One early comment caught my eye in particular. I fixated on its enormity as it had an opportunity to sink into my consciousness. As you know I’m a relentless counter of things, whether they may be waterfalls, lighthouses, fortifications, ferries, breweries & brewpubs, or all the many geo-oddities you see featured on these pages. In particular, I have a soft spot for County Counters even though I’ve barely cracked a thousand on my own.

(http://taxine.com/fullerspicer/tds_fritz_oconee.jpg) (http://www.mapquest.com/?hk=iK50yG&ICID=embed_viewLargerMap)

Fritz not only counts counties like many of us here on the 12MC do, but he also counts all the possible crossing combinations between counties in both directions. His accomplishments are a complete order of magnitude beyond what I’ve ever even attempted to do, and much more successfully accomplished I might add. I feel like such a slacker compared to Fritz and I will now use his example as positive motivation.

Here is the comment that knocked me over:

… I have as a more recent goal to try to cross all 18,769 places where counties abut upon one another (or foreign states or provinces) by line or point. I’ve managed to cross 15,074, and there are quite a few without roads/paths or bridged waterways which will remain uncrossable, but it’s fun to try to do it.

I contacted Fritz off-line to see if he might be interested in answering a few questions, and sharing his experiences with the 12MC audience. He graciously accepted the opportunity for an interview and you will see the amazing results below. I am sure that you will have questions and comments of your own so please feel free to post them so that Fritz can see them. Also, he might be willing to share the spreadsheet template he developed to track his boundary crossings, assuming you’re prepared to take your County Counting to the next level, and if you ask kindly.

I’m even more impressed after the interview. I think you will be too.

Pauline Park's LGBT commencement address

I’m honored by the invitation to speak here at the Rutgers University Rainbow Graduation and I’d like to thank the the Office for Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities (SJE) for that invitation. And I’d especially like to thank Jenny Kurtz for organizing my appearance here. I feel particularly honored to be the first commencement speaker at Rainbow Graduation who is from outside of the Rutgers community.  And let me say that I am really impressed by the work that SJE is doing here at Rutgers to make the university a safer place for all students, including and especially those who identify as LGBT or queer.
...

In “Walden,” Thoreau poses basic questions that we all face as human beings: What is life and how shall we live it? Thoreau offers this answer: “I did not wish to take a cabin passage, but rather to go before the mast and on the deck of the world, for there I could best see the moonlight amid the mountains. I do not wish to go below now.”

What is that “moonlight amid the mountains” of which Thoreau speaks? It is the sheer exhilaration of the authentic life lived fully in the integrity of one’s own truest self. Ennis and Jack glimpse the literal moonlight amid the mountains when they live on Brokeback and later return to it on their periodic “fishing trips.” But only Jack can see the metaphorical moonlight of the authentic life that offers itself to them before they descend from the mountain into the dreary desperation of straight conformity and loveless marriage. Thoreau could well have been describing Jack in the passage in “Walden” in which he famously declared: “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.”

The authentic life is there for the living, and the deepest tragedy of “Brokeback Mountain” is Ennis’s refusal to accept Jack’s invitation to live it. Regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, anyone seeking to live an authentic life need look no further than the conclusion from “Walden” for guidance:

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams,  and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”

Thank you.

Fun Question of the Week

(http://davecullen.com/brokeback/daily/format/placeholder.gif)This week's question: What did "Shane" do at the end of the classic 1953 Western of the same name when the little boy kept calling his name?

A. Gave him the finger  B. Kept on riding away  C. Fired pistol into the air  B. Howled like a gibbon

Last week's question and answer: Which openly gay actor performed in drag early in his career, playing a young mill girl who cheats her way to the top in a beauty contest?

Cally was able to figure this one out. The answer is Sir Ian McKellen. Here's a snippet from mckellen.com (http://www.mckellen.com/life/per.htm):

"At all his schools he acted, most crucially for Frank Greene, the senior English master who directed the annual, spring-term Bolton School classical play in the main hall, seating 800 people. Bolton School, where McKellen was a scholar, further encouraged the tyro actor at the Hopefield Miniature Theatre. This converted Edwardian house had an auditorium for 50 adoring parents and a tiny stage for puppetry, one-act entertainments in French or translated from the Greek or written especially by the masters. In one of these latter, Ian made the first of very few appearances in drag, as a Bolton mill-girl who cheats her way to the finale of a beauty contest (The Beauty Contest by Leonard Roe). His first Shakespeare performance was at Hopefield, as a 13 year old Malvolio in the letter scene from Twelfth Night."

"How Many Gays Must God Create Before We Accept That He Wants Them Around?"

"Representative Steve Simon (DFL Hopkins/St. Louis Park) says a proposed Minnesota constitutional amendment is largely about religion. He says if sexual orientation is innate as science is showing us, and not a lifestyle choice, then God created gay people. He asks how many gay people must God create before we accept that he wants them around."

Support in polls for same-sex marriage could influence Proposition 8 legal battle, experts say

Recent polls showing majority support for same sex marriage could have an effect on judges as the legal fight against Proposition 8 moves through the courts, experts and advocates say.

A series of recent polls suggesting a majority of Americans support the right of gays to marry may influence the outcome of the legal dispute over California's ban on same-sex marriages, some legal experts and gay rights advocates predict.

The courts don't look to opinion polls when they decide cases, but shifts in popular sentiment can influence their thinking on evolving interpretations of civil rights, constitutional experts say.

"I do not believe that any justices base their decision on opinion polls, but that does not deny they can have a subtle effect," said Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Irvine law school and a renowned constitutional scholar.

In the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe vs. Wade opinion on abortion rights, late Justice Harry Blackmun is said by historians to have kept polling data in the case files and relied on it to help shape his decision, said Loyola Law School professor Douglas NeJaime, an expert on sexual orientation law.

He and other legal analysts predict that by the time the lawsuit brought against Proposition 8 by two same-sex couples makes it way to the high court in 2013 or 2014, support for same-sex marriage will have continued to increase among voters, creating a more receptive environment if the justices decide that the initiative treads on constitutional rights.

Focus on Family's Mohler Admits Defeat on Gay Marriage

This article brought a smile to my face. Al Mohler, one of the most prominent and influential religious right leaders, is telling his fellow Christians (http://www.christianpost.com/news/christians-need-to-prepare-for-normalization-of-gay-marriage-49195/) that they might as well accept that gay marriage is going to be reality in this country soon.

Though many Christians are going to try to deny "the obvious," evangelical leader Dr. Albert Mohler believes gay marriage is going to become normalized.

"I think it's clear that something like same-sex marriage is going to become normalized, legalized and recognized in the culture. It's time for Christians to start thinking about how we're going to deal with that," he said Friday on the Focus on the Family radio program.

They'll ignore the obvious solution, of course, which is to recognize that it has nothing to do with them. Don't like same-sex marriage? Then don't marry someone of the same sex. No one is forcing them to participate in one, for crying out loud.

But while I think Mohler is right, I think he's missing just how deep this change is going to go. It isn't merely that gay marriage is going to become a reality, it's also that opposition to gay marriage will, in relatively short order, be viewed by most people as being every bit as ridiculous and bigoted as opposition to interracial marriage.

My New Kentucky Baby

Joshua Gamson is an author and a professor at the University of San Francisco. He is working on a book about unconventional family making.

We came to Bowling Green, Ky., home of our good-humored surrogate, Gail, with a court order from California designating me and Richard — my husband in some states, though not in Kentucky — as the future baby’s legal parents. I’d been hoping to avoid Kentucky. Its laws make it seem unwelcoming to gay people and ambivalent about surrogacy. I figured that culturally it would be red-statey too, full of homophobia, guns and fatty foods. The coasts seemed safer, especially for a black man, a Jew and their black-Jewish daughter.

We’d invited Gail to come to Massachusetts, where we were married and our first kid was born, or to California, where she went for the in vitro fertilization. She was usually up for adventure — after all, she was carrying a baby for two men made with another woman’s egg. But she wanted to keep her schedule as a clerk at an amusement park and as a single mother of three, and so our baby would be born in Kentucky.

When I arrived a few days after Richard, I didn’t find much to allay my fears. Our hotel was next to a Cracker Barrel, and the main strip contained mostly churches and fast-food joints. Our daughter, Reba, an impressionable preschooler, had already begun to say things like “Do y’all want to go to the pool?” Richard went with Gail to meet the obstetrician, who, when faced with the requirements of our surrogacy plan, got hostile and scheduled her labor to be induced on his off-day.

Not long after my arrival, our lawyer called to report that the local family court had refused to domesticate the California court order, leaving things in legal limbo. She said she would threaten to sue Kentucky for violating the “full faith and credit” clause of the Constitution and instructed us to get out of there as soon as the baby was born.

Harvey Milk's Former Office Becomes Suicide Prevention Center

The Harvey Milk call center is the Trevor Project's third nationwide

During the 1970s, calls came in almost daily to late gay rights activist Harvey Milk's Castro Camera store in San Francisco from youth struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.

Anne Kronenberg, Milk's campaign manager, would answer the phone in the back of the office at 575 Castro St. and then hand it off to Milk, who was on his way to becoming the first openly gay city supervisor in the country.

"He would say (to the callers), 'You've got to have hope,'" Kronenberg said today. "He'd say that the world is not a bad place, that there's a place for each of us, and you can come someplace that will accept you."

Today, 575 Castro St. has come full circle on what would have been Milk's 81st birthday.

The Trevor Project--a nonprofit that provides suicide prevention and crisis counseling to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth--opened a call center in the back of the Human Rights Campaign store that now occupies Milk's former office space.

Gay men report higher cancer rates: US study

A large study in California released last Monday found that cancer may be nearly twice as prevalent among gay men as among straight men.

The study relied on self-reported data from the California Health Interview survey, the largest state survey of its kind in the United States, and included more than 120,000 people over three years: 2001, 2003 and 2005.

A total of 3,690 men reported a cancer diagnosis as adults. Gay men were 1.9 times as likely as straight men to have been diagnosed with cancer, said the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Cancer.

There was no such difference witnessed among lesbian and straight women, but gay and bisexual females were twice as likely to say they were in fair or poor health after a cancer diagnosis compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

Lead author Ulrike Boehmer of the Boston University School of Public Health said the data can help guide services for the gay community.

"Because more gay men report as cancer survivors, we need foremost programmes for gay men that focus on primary cancer prevention and early cancer detection," she said.

More research is needed to determine if gay men are actually at a higher risk of getting cancer, the study author said.

Out West at the Autry Presents Patricia Nell Warren’s New Book, My West

Author talk and book signing with noted historian and author of The Front Runner (1974), the first gay-themed novel to be named a New York Times bestseller

After a successful inaugural year of Out West at the Autry programs, the Autry National Center continues its commitment to telling the stories of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the American West by presenting Montana native, noted historian, and author Patricia Nell Warren on Sunday, June 26, 2011.

“The continuation of Out West at the Autry is a testament to the great interest that exists for the LGBT stories of the American West to be heard and the need for them to be added to our mainstream historical narrative,” said Daniel Finley, Autry President and CEO. “We thank Ms. Warren for her dedication to this groundbreaking series and are pleased to have her participate once again.”

In her new anthology, My West, Warren unveils a collection of intensely personal writings about the American West—a sagebrush bouquet on everything from agriculture to zest, by way of cooking, ethnicity, history, politics, and sexuality. A book signing will follow her talk.

“Seeing the Autry make its historic decision to explore the LGBT aspect of Western history, and participating in one of its first Out West programs, was a turning point for me,” said Warren. “The Autry inspired me to gather up dozens of short pieces that I'd published here and there over the years—and to herd some of these favorites together under one cover as an anthology of personal perspectives on my native region.”

“In a year when LGBT publications are failing and LGBT bookstores are closing at an alarming rate, as the author of the most famous gay novel ever written Patricia Nell Warren was and remains the ‘frontrunner’ of gay fiction,” said Gregory Hinton, creator and producer of Out West at the Autry. “Her 2011 Western anthology, My West, is a testament to her craft, her veracity, and her true Montana grit. Readers of LGBT fiction—past, present, and future—are forever in her debt.”

When: Sunday, June 26, 2:00 p.m. Tickets for this event include museum admission: $10 for adults, $6 for students and seniors 60+, $4 for children ages 3–12, and free for Autry members, veterans, and children age 2 and under.

Cannes prize gives 'Life' luster

Minneapolis producer Bill Pohlad hopes the prestigious Palme d'Or will help "The Tree of Life" find a bigger audience in the U.S.

Independent movie producer Bill Pohlad was startled when his newest film sparked boos at the Cannes film festival this month. He was even more surprised when it went on to win the international competition's top prize.

Pohlad, whose films include "Brokeback Mountain," "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Into the Wild," traveled to France to present his latest, "The Tree of Life," from reclusive, perfectionist director Terrence Malick. The fantastical family drama, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, generated cheers and catcalls at its press screening. Pohlad attended the film's official coming-out party, the red-carpet black-tie evening premiere for movie moguls and celebrities, where the reception was warmer. Still, he wasn't counting on the difficult film scooping up trophies, so he returned to his Minneapolis home to unwind with his wife, Michelle, and young son, Oliver.

Then, as hints began to circulate that "The Tree of Life" might indeed win something, Pohlad headed back to the Riviera. On Sunday he sat in the Palais des Festivals, "nervous for the film," and found himself heading onstage to accept the Palme d'Or, otherwise known as the film world's most prestigious honor.

I immediately fell in love with it. Like with 'Brokeback Mountain,' when you read it
you immediately have a powerful emotional reaction to it. I felt this could be a great film."

Jury president Robert De Niro said Malick's epic had "the size, the importance, the intention, whatever you want to call it, that seemed to fit the prize." It was the showstopper climax of a five-year, secretive, sometimes uncertain gestation, and another boost to Pohlad's producing career, which Variety has called "an indie success story."

"Having showed it to virtually nobody, we had no idea how people were going to react to it," Pohlad said Tuesday following "Tree's" big win. "We all knew this wasn't going to be an easy film or one people immediately would connect with. It was disturbing to hear about the boos, but that's kind of a Cannes thing. The French like to be very vociferous in their feelings. As we got the reviews trickling out and people tweeting, in the beginning it was, 'What's this film all about?' and 'It's not a masterpiece, but it's great.' Then as the day wore on, some of those reviewers and others started to chime in more positively. We've found that it takes a little time to connect with the film because it's not a traditional film with a by-the-numbers linear plot line."

"The Tree of Life" promises to be the most polarizing, challenging and debated American film of 2011. The fifth feature in Malick's four-decade career is a film built on a Big Question: How do we as individuals fit into the scheme of existence? A mosaic-like structure of grandiose and humble images, from family life in small-town Texas to the forests of prehistory and the dazzling lights of distant space, it transmits Malick's sweeping vision with minimal dialogue or traditional character development.

Mason Lee

Filmmaker’s Son Has His Turn on Screen

Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee has brought us such contemporary classics as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “The Ice Storm” and “Brokeback Mountain.” He is currently working on a film version of the bestselling book “Life of Pi.”

On Friday Mr. Lee’s son, Mason, who turns 21 this week, hits screens in a prominent role in “The Hangover 2.” Mason is a rising senior at NYU studying acting; he took a semester off to make the film in Thailand and now lives in Chelsea. Marshall Heyman spoke with the actor:

Had you seen the first “Hangover” before you auditioned for the movie?

About three times. The first time with my brother [a visual artist living in Brooklyn] and my dad. We all thought it was really funny.

When did you decide you wanted to be an actor?

When I was watching Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies in our apartment in White Plains when I was 6. I would jump off the couch and do high-flying kicks like Jet Li. I started doing our local Shakespeare group when I was a freshman in high school and my junior year I played Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Did your dad making films make you want to act?

I don’t think that really factored into me initially wanting to become an actor. I told him and he had some words of wisdom about what kind of a life I’d be getting into and he definitely shaped my artistic perception.

Red Sox to produce an "It Gets Better" anti-bullying video for gay youth

The Boston Red Sox will produce an online video for the “It Gets Better Project,” an anti-bullying project aimed at helping gay youth.

The announcement that the team would be the third major league baseball team to participate in the campaign came today in response to a petition started by a 12-year-old New Hampshire boy that garnered nearly 10,000 signatures in a matter of days.

“The Red Sox organization takes the issue of bullying seriously,” the team said in a statement yesterday released by spokeswoman Leah Tobin. “It is something that has touched many of us and those we love, and it is a growing problem in our community. We are proud of dedicated Red Sox fans like 12-year-old Sam Maden who have taken the courageous step of publicly standing up against bullying of LGBT youth.”

The team didn't specify which players would participate, or what the video would say.

The Posters From Egypt's 'Second Revolution'

Thousands of Egyptians crowded into Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday (and in other Egyptian cities) in what organizers labeled a "second revolution," as security forces stayed away to avoid confrontations and the Muslim Brotherhood, a powerful Islamist group, kept its distance out of concern that the demonstrations would only further divide the country. What were the protesters demanding? A tour of today's signs provides some answers.

One critical demand is an end to government corruption--a grievance, Reuters points out, that first brought protesters out into the now-iconic Tahrir Square in January. But the new demonstrations are somewhat sprawling in their critiques of the regime. Take, for instance, one activist's pop culture reference to link the old Egypt regime to neighboring Libya: posters that depict ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi as the gay cowboys from Brokeback Mountain, with the word "mafia" underneath.

School district to alter Internet security to allow students access to gay, other websites

Rowland Unified School District administrators say they plan to scale back Internet security software in order to let students access gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender websites.

The proposed changes are in response to a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union that alleged blocking access to the sites - containing information on gay rights, activism and social networking - was a violation of free speech.

School district officials said the sites were blocked by accident, and they are working to enable access.

"It's not our intention to block sites that are informative and of value to L.G.B.T. (Lesbian, Gay, bisexual and transgender) students," Superintendent Maria Ott said.

The software used to block the sites, M86 Security, works by grouping various websites into categories. School officials can then choose to block access to entire categories of websites.

The so-called sexual preference websites were categorized under "lifestyle" - along with sites that cover cultural identity, organizations and club affiliations, according to M86 Security.

Rowland Unified is one of a number of school districts that blocked access to the "lifestyle" category, according to the ACLU.

The Girl With the Golden Wardrobe

Long after the Golden Age of Hollywood has dimmed, and its legendary stars taken a bow, history's most iconic film costumes are returning to the spotlight as actress Debbie Reynolds sells her showcase collection

On June 18, thousands of the most iconic costumes and props in Hollywood history will come to the auction block, a singular assemblage of art, fashion and nostalgia. Steeped in historical and cultural significance, it is perhaps one of the most emotion-laden collections of all time. Judy Garland's ruby-red slippers and cotton dress from "The Wizard of Oz," Charlie Chaplin's signature bowler, and the "drapery" hat Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) donned to woo Rhett Butler are just a handful of the pieces selectively and methodically acquired over four decades by Debbie Reynolds, who has finally given up trying to find her vast collection a home.

So how do you value a dress that once supported the curves of Marilyn Monroe? Handsomely, it seems. Arguably the most prized item in the collection, Monroe's legendary halter-neck dress from "The Seven Year Itch," famous for its leg-flashing subway grate scene, is estimated to fetch $1 million to $2 million.

To examine the pieces up close, as I recently did, is to gain a rich appreciation for their craftsmanship and intricacy. Designed by Travilla, Monroe's crepe dress has more pleats than one would imagine, and a closer inspection reveals the tiny, hand-sewn stitches and light boning that create a built-in bra. The years have turned it from white to ecru, but the magic is still there. As Reynolds's daughter, the writer and actress Carrie Fisher, says, "Costumes carry the energy of the actors who wore them; they are infused with the power of the stars and stories that inspired and empowered us."

Wes Bentley Was Ready To Die During Drugs Hell

Actor Wes Bentley lost the will to live at the lowest point of his eight-year drug hell.

The actor shot to fame at the age of 20 after the 1999 release of the Oscar-winning American Beauty, but Bentley struggled to deal with the spotlight and fell into a downward spiral of drink and drugs.

Bentley's troubles mounted when his best friend, Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger, died from a prescription drug overdose in 2008.

He says, "Him dying and leaving (his daughter) Matilda had a huge impact on me then... It was a wake-up call that I didn't answer."

The actor subsequently turned to professionals to help him get clean and Bentley, who now has a baby son, Charles, with producer wife Jacqui, is thankful to have received a second chance at happiness: "I know what it (drug addiction) looks like, and I don't want to go back. The guy dedicated to sobriety, who has this family and this life - that's more me than being an addict and an alcoholic."

Happy [belated] Birthday, Larry McMurtry

[June 3rd] is the 75th birthday of Larry McMurtry, one of the most talented and prolificmodern writers working in the western genre and born in Archer City, Texas.

Larry McMurtry was born into Texas cattle ranching, but forsaked that life for one as a writer. After receiving his M.A. at Rice University, McMurtry joined Wallace Stegner‘s creative writing program at Stanford University. Stegner, who had written several highly successful western novels, recognized McMurtry’s talent and encouraged his ambitions to write about the modern West.

While McMurtry developed his skills in writing, he opened two bookstores, one in Archer City, which was the model for the town, Thalia, present in many of his novels. The other is located in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC. His shops, named Booked Up, are the largest sellers of used books in the country with over 400,000 titles.

A raw, powerful story of two young men, a Wyoming ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 sheepherding in the harsh, high grasslands of contemporary Wyoming and form an unorthodox yet life-long bond--by turns ecstatic, bitter and conflicted. Written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

A PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community
is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends
and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union.
It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people
can live with dignity and fairness under the law. Each June, we commemorate the
courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT
Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal right
for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Last week's question and answer:. What American film classic did actor John Wayne call "the most un-American thing I've ever seen in my whole life"?

Thanks to all for participating! Yes, the answer is the 1952 Gary Cooper western High Noon. Wayne's objection; "The last thing in the picture is ole Coop putting the United States marshal's badge under his foot and stepping on it."

Jack's Bible Stories, Illustrated
Y'see, after that run-in with Goliath,
David lived with King Saul.
He met Saul's son, Jonathan.
They got along real well.

And Jonathan made a covenant with David
because he loved him as himself.
Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David,
along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

1 Samuel 18:3 & 4

Then Saul went crazy and decided t'
kill David for some reason.
Jonathan protected him.
But David had t' move away, anyway.

... David got up from the south side of the stone and
bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground.
Then they kissed each other and wept together—but David wept the most.
Jonathan said to David, “Go ...”
Then David left ...

1 Samuel 20:41 & 42

“How the mighty have fallen in battle!

Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
 I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;

Your love for me was wonderful,

A VOICE FROM CAIRO

“Please don’t use my real name when you write about this,” the handsome, outspoken 25-year-old requested, “I’m sad to say, but it’s dangerous because of the homophobia. Just call me Adam.”

I’d arranged this meeting with Adam (who writes about the arts and culture for a left-leaning Egyptian magazine) via Facebook. Earlier in 2010, he had received a fellowship that allowed him to join dozens of young people from throughout Northern Africa at a conference in Sweden.

“The program was based on using social media to promote and defend social change,” he told me last August, not realizing that he would soon be engaged in a populist uprising with Facebook and Twitter among its key tactical weapons. “It made me feel like I had a network of support that went beyond Egypt.”

If Edelweiss playing at the airport and camels named after moonwalking megalomaniacs are part of globalism’s downside, the Internet and social media are part of the upside. And so, as it turns out, can be Hollywood movies:

“About four years ago,” Adam told me, tearing up as he spoke. “I saw Brokeback Mountain. It was a pirated digital copy on the Internet. Films that deal with gay subjects are banned from cinemas here. This movie was so beautiful. I had never seen anything like it before. And I was so upset at the pain these men felt, and the hiding they had to do. I could see myself in it. This is when I really started to identify as gay. I started to read about it, go to lectures when I could find them, to seek out others.”

While Adam went on to find a small cadre of gay friends in Cairo, he struggles with the lack of an open, active gay community. Since his teenage years, he has been passionately engaged in the pursuit of women’s rights in Egypt, itself still a controversial cause. In a country where, according to Adam, government elites leverage Muslim religious beliefs not out of piety, but to advance their own wealth and power, the notion of gay rights still goes largely unspoken.

Amnesty International: Turkey must take action over LGBT discrimination

Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is a problem in Turkey, and a new report made public Tuesday is urging the new government to take measures to protect their rights.

“It is the responsibility of all the parties in Parliament to ensure that any new constitutional reforms in Turkey outlaws discrimination on grounds of sexuality or gender identity,” said Andrew Gardner, Amnesty International’s researcher on Turkey.

Entitled “Not an illness, nor a crime,” the report said lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, people in Turkey demand equality. The report cited interviews with people who faced discrimination from officials in health services, education, housing and the workplace in a country where there are no provisions to prevent it.

Support Is Key to ‘Coming Out’ Process for Gay People: Study

The long-term impact of this step often depends on local community, researchers say.

For gay and lesbian Americans, the rewards of "coming out" often hinge on the support of the local community, a new study shows.

Research has shown that gays, lesbians or bisexuals who reveal their sexual orientation typically boost their self-esteem and experience less anger and depression. And the new study found that disclosing one's sexual identity makes people even happier than previously thought.

However, the benefits of coming out are limited to socially supportive settings, and may not apply to those exposed to hostile or judgmental environments.

"In general, research shows that coming out is a good thing," said the study's co-author, Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester in a news release. "Decades of studies have found that openness allows gay people to develop an authentic sense of themselves and to cultivate a positive minority sexual identity."

Answers to your questions: The American Psychological Association offers insight into coming out (http://www.apa.org/topics/sexuality/orientation.aspx#) and why it's important.

The Best LGBT Books of All Time

Benoit Denizet-Lewis asked our country’s leading queer writers to suggest five indispensable books.

I wish someone had given me a list of required gay reading when I was coming out. Gay men gave me a lot of things back then (porn, theater tickets, crabs), but no one gave me book titles. As a young gay man, I could have used a literary roadmap to help me put my experiences—and my feelings—in some historical and sociological context. As a young writer, I could have used being better read. Why didn’t anyone tell me that I needed to know who Paul Monette was?

In an effort to right those wrongs, and to do my part to promote gay cultural literacy in a time of vanishing gay bookstores and vanishing attention spans, I’ve asked some of the country’s most interesting and iconic LGBT writers—including Michael Cunningham, Edmund White, John Waters, and Patricia Nell Warren—to suggest five books that every LGBT person should have on his bookshelf (or Kindle).

Passion ignites in ‘Fool for Love’

Eddie and May, the volatile duo in Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love, aren’t so very different from Ennis and Jack in Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain. Both couples are bound by passion that crosses the line into violence. Both have reason to hide the true nature of their relationship. Yet try as they might to end it, these addicted lovers in a still-wild West just can’t quit each other.

Shepard’s 1983 script, now getting a new production by the Alliance Theatre Lab in Miami Lakes, is a tight piece that peels back its mysteries until the scope of one more American family tragedy is revealed. As in many of his plays, Shepard considers the linkage of love and violence, the mythic West, damage done by an absent alcoholic father, divergent takes on a family’s history.

Beyond exploring those themes, what actors and directors like Alliance’s Adalberto Acevedo relish in Fool for Love is the chance to leap into edgy theater territory, see-sawing between quieter emotional moments and a shocking, unpredictable physicality.

Gyllenhaal pushed to edge by Grylls

Jake Gyllenhaal was pushed to his limits by Bear Grylls on a grueling survival expedition.

The Hollywood star, who has trained to get in shape to star in action movies, went to Iceland with the former soldier for his show Born Survivor and asked to be pushed - but admitted he was surprised by how tough he found it.

Bear revealed: "A couple of weeks ago I took Jake Gyllenhaal, reportedly the fittest man in Hollywood, on a Born Survivor to Iceland. He said he wanted to to be pushed and afterwards said he'd never been pushed so hard.

He went on: "We had crazy conditions - sleeping in snow caves, huge river crossings and these torrential storms. I was a little bit nervous as I promised Jake's management team I would keep him alive, but he was brilliant.

Fun Question of the Week

(http://davecullen.com/brokeback/daily/format/placeholder.gif)This week's question:  What unique money-saving attachments did Greta Garbo have installed in her Duesenberg automobile?

Let us know your answer in the Response Thread. (http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=8377.new#new)

Last week's question and answer:. What four 1939 Hollywood classics were honored on 25-cent stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service in celebration of their 50th anniversaries?

Thank you to Lyle (Mooska) and kathy for figuring this out!

From arago.si.edu (http://arago.si.edu/index.asp?con=1&cmd=1&mode=2&tid=2034536): "Four commemorative stamps honoring classic films from Hollywood's golden era were dedicated on March 23, 1990, in Hollywood as a prelude to the 62nd annual Academy Awards. 1990 marked the 50th anniversary of each film's having received nominations in 1939 for the 1940 Academy Awards.

"Each stamp in the block of four 25-cent stamps resembles a miniature movie poster. The stamps feature Gone with the Wind and two of its stars, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh as Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara; Beau Geste, whose stars included Gary Cooper; Stagecoach, in which John Wayne played the role of the Ringo Kid; and The Wizard of Oz, whose cast included Judy Garland as Dorothy. Dorothy's dog Toto also is pictured on the stamp."
