I'm still puzzled as to why they why they would waste the time to make this.

Maybe they feel it would make a good movie and to make money, of course.

I kind of asked the same question about Beauty and the Beast (or was it Cinderella?  :( ), but they made it, so why not the Hunchback?

So is Disney's live-action version and remake of "The Lion King" (1994).

Disney is also finishing their live-action version of "Mulan" (1998).  A live-action version of "Dumbo" is going to be released soon and the studio is currently working on live-action versions of "Peter Pan" (1953) and "The Sword in the Stone" (1963) as well.

If these films are like the recent Jungle Book, they'll mostly be CGI!

I did enjoy Disney's live-action versions of "Cinderella" (2015) and "Beauty and the Beast" (2017).  The live-action version of " The Jungle Book" (2016) was good, too.  The live-action version of "Cinderella" was more straightforward than some of the others. I loved Angelina Jolie's performance in "Maleficent" (2014) and how it imagined Maleficent's backstory and retold the events of "Sleeping Beauty" (1959) from her point of view. I am curious as to what the sequel to "Maleficent" will be like. "Maleficent" reminded me a bit of Gregory Maguire's highly enjoyable and very adult fantasy-themed novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" (1995) and of the excellent Broadway musical stage show "Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz".  In fact, a theatrical film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked" is supposed to be released in the next few years after the release of the theatrical film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical "Cats".
