Awww... pity you did not care for it.  Actually the music for "When I Am Laid in Earth" would do well for the vast sadness of the northern plains.  Or Ennis's drive back from Lighting Flat.  "...a tiny fenced square on the welling prairie, a few graves bright with plastic flowers, and didn't want to know Jack was going in there, to be buried on the grieving plain."
I'ts possibly the only memorable piece though, the opera was OK I like Purcell and I suppose I have to remember it's quite early music.

I just watched 'Il Trittico' on PBS. First time I've seen it.

Puccini is the Master.

Tragedy and disappointment are caused by false ideals and expectation.

Anyone in the mood to jump off the Ponte Vecchio? I don't think I'll join in that party. :)

What about the "Mi piace, e bello bello" party  ;D

I'm in! Who's bringing the vino? [That jumping off the Ponte Vecchio thing is where the expression about the future looking murky came from.]
May the bridges I burn light the way forward.

Don't you think Anna Russell would have made a good Mrs. Twist?
I do my thing, & you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, and if by chance we find each other - it is beautiful. If not it can't be helped.

I thought she'd be good as Lureen's mom.

OK lets assume we have a BBM opera in two parts. So the first part is meeting and up on the mountain, parting and marriage.  Second part The intervening years, angst etc, finale Jack's death and Ennis'e lieberstod!

Any Ideas how we flesh this out?

The ouverture: their meeting in the trailer.

First act: entirely instrumental, like a huge symphonic poem, leading to a first climax/explosion: FNIT.

No human voices until the beginning of the second act.
A short duet.

Second act: the rest of the BBM time - until the big fight and their moving in different directions.

Third act: different scenes from E.'s life and J.'s life, the reunion/Motel scene in the center, followed by the post-divorce reception.
Long duets.

No arias in general.

Act four could be reserved for the scenes with women (Lureen, Cassie).

Act five: the long controversey - Jake's death - the phone call - ensemble scene with the parents

Finale: transcending, the trailer scene, a long interior monologue of Ennis.

Puccini tears or Wagner tears?

At the end it has to be Wagner tears, Ennis sings his version of Lieberstod from Tristran und Isolde as he hugs the two shirts in his trailer.

Fine for me, since it means that the fifth act will take forever - and one of the aspects I love best about opera is its irreasonable length.  :D

The could even be a lieder "Ennis's song" that tells the whole story (tennor or bass?), it could be wonderfull!
