You know I ain’t queer!

Here is a medieval portrait of Alexander looking rather less macho than usual.

What did Alexander's father Phillip look like?

Here is a reconstruction of his head based on his skull found at the royal tombs at Vergina.

What a lovely lovely thread!

I used to pour out libations to the deified Alexander.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe but nothing could be done about it, & if you can't fix it, you've got to stand it

All libations gratefully received!

You know, Attic Redware is still probably the best looking pottery ever made, by any civilisation.

Very exciting Jo.  You already know how I feel about Alex/Hep/Bag! LOL  Look forward to paying homage to MR and the gang from TPB!!

BTW I loved the music on YouTube with Anya -- thanks for the heads up on PM.  Maybe I'll look for the CD next time I'm out and about.

The shirts hanging on a nail shudder slightly in the draft.

If he does not force his attention on it, it might stoke the day, rewarm that old, cold time on the mountain when they owned the world and nothing seemed wrong.

Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive
But to be young was very heaven!

I should have written red FIGURED ware, redware  had black figures on a red background. It was the reverse.

Thanks for the correction BB1! You have set a precedent for scrupulous accuracy which we fellow travellers will do our best to live up to! :D

Tomb of Alexander’s son

Like Alexander’s father, his son Alexander IV was murdered. The deed was carried out by the evil Cassander
who also had Olympias bumped off by public stoning. While archaeological detectives are still hot on the trail of
Alexander's lost tomb, at least we know where Dad and Alex junior are buried.

You can take a tour of their tombs which were unearthed in 1977 at the ancient stronghold of Vergina (aka Aigai) in Macedonia.

The only thing we have to fear....?

They say Alexander overcame fear and left it dead at his feet …

…if that’s so, it sure had a lot of company!

Meanwhile back on the march...

Alexander: At last! I can see the Hindu Kush mountains up ahead!

Guide: Sire I hate to contradict you but that looks suspiciously like Mount Olympus.

Alexander: Apollo almighty! That means we’ve been marching round in a bloody circle!

You too can take the mickey out of Alex - something thousands if not millions of Sogdians, Medians, Persians, Thracians, Scythians, Mallians, Hindus, Branchidae, old school Macedonians and most definitely Athenians would have loved to do - without fear of crucifixion at dawn. (He's Great enought to take it!)

The Wilder Shores of Alexander Fanfiction

Writing and reading slash (for the uninitiated online homoerotic fiction based on various male/male pairings from films ranging from Lord of the Rings to our own Jack and Ennis) seems to be a predominantly female occupation. Perhaps that explains one of the more outré genres to emerge within fanfiction – M.Preg. slash –  in which one of the male characters gets pregnant. While Jack has only found himself with a bun in the oven (or ass baby as some so delicately put it) in the dc photocaption thread (much to the horror of many photocaptioners!), Alexander’s boyfriend Hephaistion is currently starring in a whole website devoted to his pregnancy at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Alexander-the-Great-MPregs-FemPregs

Meanwhile the fanartists have joined in the fun making sure that Alexander’s other lover Bagoas, a Persian eunuch* does not escape reproductive duties either.

It appears the Macedonian succession is secure!

*Yes Alexander did have a Persian eunuch as a lover. His real life was stranger than any fanfiction. Alex liked to excel all others in all things. While I don’t think he managed to get his boyfriends pregnant, I’m sure he gave it his best shot!

I always had a thing for Alexander. He deserved his status as a divine hero amongst the gods.

Cool!

You know what that is, right?

The Apollo Belvedere, for something like 400 years the worlds most famous statue---until the 20th century lol

The Vatican has it, I saw it when it came to NY years ago and will never forget my reaction. It knocked me speechless.

2000 years and no arms and you still KNEW why the ancients were so in awe of the Gods.
