Yes, it is already being hailed as a landmark ruling. There were an incredible 40 postponements in this long & drawn out case, so I can only imagine the relief for the family & friends that something has come out of all this. There were vigils outside the court, and huge cheers of joy when the verdict was announced. I am not sure if there is possibility of parole, I hope not.

I found the story on Google.

South Africa: A lesson for lesbian murderers

By Crystal Van Wyk

Zoliswa Nkonyana, a black lesbian, residing in Khayelitsha Township on the outskirts of Cape Town, was open about her sexuality and her family accepted her.

Although she was open about her sexuality, a constitutional right in South Africa, it was seen as something very unusual in the townships.

Nkonyana's confidence and freedom about her sexuality cost her her life after she was stabbed and beaten to death six years ago. Her only crime was that she did not hide that she was lesbian.

Nkonyana's case is, however, not isolated. Other black lesbians in South Africa's sprawling townships have also faced similar deaths, while others have been abused, in what the perpetrators claim are corrective rapes.

This week, four men were found guilty of the murder of Nkonyana and were sentenced to 18 years each for stabbing and stoning the 19-year-old to death in 2006.

New York Times: In the Shadow of Stonewall Inn, a Gay Man Is Killed
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/19/nyregion/killing-in-greenwich-village-looks-like-hate-crime-police-say.html?_r=0

Quote
Mark Carson did not hide that he was gay, and when he went out on the town he would often head to Greenwich Village, where years before he was born, much of the struggle for gay liberation unfolded. Yet late Friday night, just blocks from the Stonewall Inn, among the most important landmarks of that struggle, he was confronted with a man screaming antigay slurs, who then stalked him before pulling out a silver revolver and fatally shooting him, the police said.

“This clearly looks to be a hate crime,” Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said at a news conference on Saturday. A suspect, later identified as Elliot Morales, 33, was arrested.

Mr. Kelly described a chaotic scene that involved a man seemingly out looking for trouble when he crossed paths with Mr. Carson and ended up shooting him in the face. The violence was quickly followed by a police chase and an arrest on the corner of West Third and Macdougal Streets as scores of bar hoppers looked on in shock.

Mr. Kelly said there had been a rise in bias-related crimes in New York City this year — 22 compared with 13 during the same period last year. In just the past three weeks, there have been five attacks directed at gay men, including a vicious assault on a gay couple outside Madison Square Garden on May 5.

Grieving the sad, sad loss of 13 year-old Tyrone Unsworth who killed himself on Tuesday after being bullied by students at Apsley State High School in Brisbane.

Tyrone, described by his mother as a “feminine male” had been bullied since he was in Year 5 in primary school. Very recently he was hurt so badly by students wielding a fence paling that he was admitted to  hospital for surgery. When he recovered, the fun-loving Tyrone was too frightened to return to school.

The school said it was not aware of the bullying.

Homophobic/transphobic bullying of LGBTI students and students suspected of not being straight reached such proportions in Australian schools in recent years that teachers, who did not know how to respond, asked for help. This led to the emergence of the Safe Schools Coalition of educators, teachers, policy makers, people working in universities like La Trobe in Melbourne and LGBTI youth groups like Minus 18 who developed the Safe Schools Program of curriculum resources for teachers to use in schools and support LGBT students. It was even supported by the previous Federal government led by the arch-conservative prime minister Tony Abbott.

In the last several months, there has been a malicious campaign by reactionary members of the Federal government, the Australian Christian (sic) Lobby, the conservative Murdoch press and some conservative parents to gut the Safe Schools Program. It has been part of the campaign to block marriage equality. The Federal government of prime minister Malcolm Turnbull buckled to the pressure and banned so-called age-inappropriate material.

Uniquely in Victoria, by contrast, the State government is extending the Safe Schools Program to all government schools. People have described the program as literally life saving.

I read about that - so terrible. Poor little boy.

Hello members!!!!  The Admin/Mod/Tech team is coming to you with news for the new year.

When this forum was originally founded, it was under the URL we all know, www.DaveCullen.com, however, it was often referred to as the "Ultimate Brokeback Forum".  Dave's website had a link to the forum, and the two entities were joined as one.

For a host of technical reasons beyond Dave’s technical ability, he needs to turn his website over to a service that can handle much of the work—and it can’t support the massive forum database. Dave really wants the forum to proceed, so the solution is simple: just split Dave’s personal pages and the forum to two separate web addresses. Everything else remains the same.

To continue to follow Dave Cullen, you can use the existing address,   www.DaveCullen.com .

To access the Ultimate Brokeback Forum, you will need to bookmark this new address:   https://www.UltimateBrokebackForum.com/forum.

We expect this change to take place within a week's time, and there should be no major disruption to the forum.   While the UBF will no longer be linked to DCF,  Dave Cullen will retain his ownership of both sites.

Please continue to watch the threads/newsbox for further updates!  We will attempt to give you all 24 hours notice before the change takes place.  However, you should make note of the new address now.  If you try to log in at the old address and you are unable to, try to use the new address.  Thanks for your continued participation in this community!

Colorado Man Savagely Gay-Bashed 50 Miles From Where Matthew Shepard Was Murdered

A gay man was brutally attacked early Saturday morning in Colorado by a man reportedly interested in the victim’s female friend.

On a GoFundMe campaign page, Shawny Marie recounted how her friend, Steven Anthony Loranger, was beaten almost to death over the weekend by a man she claims is an ex-Marine “for no other reason than being a gay man and best friends with a young woman the suspect has an affinity for.”

The attack left Loranger, 33, with a severely broken nose, a broken orbital socket and sprained abdominal wall, as well as various bruises, cuts and knots. (Scrapes on Lorangers’ midsection suggest he was dragged at one point.)
