so sad and the the body was found and her parents were told on christmas day makes it even more heartbreaking

This story is just awful, Marz, and her poor parents are devastated. A friend of our eldest daughter's died from cancer yesterday too, at the age of 35, two very sad aspects of this Christmas

Gay Coal Miner Sues Energy Co. for Failing to Respond to Fellow Miners' Anti-Gay Death Threats, Harassment

(snip)

After Hall went horseback riding with a co-worker, the mine's superintendent, Scott Lansenese, allegedly said that Hall had a "Brokeback Mountain" moment, a reference to the Academy Award-winning 2005 film about the relationship between two gay cowboys.

Some really good news; Elton John and David Furnish have a new baby, born on Christmas Day, through a surrogate mother.

Congratulations to all!

I couldn't find the weather thread...
(This is a U.S. only based article, by the way, cause there's no mention of volcanoes!)
I was in the middle of "two" of these!

I'm wondering about #9... it may have been a record breaking year for NUMBER of hurricanes, BUT there didn't seem to be much in the way of landfall.

And as for the record breaking heat in the South, our ANNUAL average temp was lowered by over 1 degree because of the heat this summer. THAT is major. But, December looks like it may raise it right back up.
In 2010, 606 people (all ages) were accidentally killed by guns.
Almost 3000 teens (15-19) die in traffic accidents a year.
1100 kids under 19 drown each year.
44 kids under 5 died of heat stroke in hot cars in 2013.
HIGH school sports account for 1.2 million trips to the ER annually.

**Well, here we go again.  A know-nothing jerk "mine superintendent" takes the name and story of the great BBM and turns it into a slur.  Damn it - I get so furious when I read or see this.**

On the other hand, it's just proof of the impact the film has had and continues to have.

Williams: Daughter Will Watch "Brokeback"
(snip)

Michelle Williams has revealed that she plans to watch Brokeback Mountain with daughter Matilda when the child gets older.

In an interview with Angeleno Magazine, the actress admitted that the film - where she originally met former partner and Matilda's father Heath Ledger - is "a lot" to handle and will be an important experience for her to have.

change.org has organized a petition to the South African Ministry of Justice re their handling of widespread "corrective" rape of lesbians. Despite a massive response from within South Africa and around the world, the Ministry has still done nothing except complain to change.org.

Here's a link if ou would like to sign and spread the word.

It snowed at my house today!  Might be a normal winter occurrence for most of you but I live in Phoenix, Arizona...the desert!  Last time it snowed was 20 years ago!  Nothing stuck but it sure was wild!  My kids were in their t-shirts and shorts running around in the backyard....we don't own jackets!  Ha!

Lyle suggested that we start the new year with a brand spankin' new thread, so I am going to start it five pages early.

Here is the link for the new News and Current Events thread!

Sorry I am one day late!

I will leave this thread unlocked for a day or so if folks want to quote.

Please go to the new discussion thread linked above.
