A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with Tama Carroll

How does story telling in words differ creatively from story telling in films?   A Night at the Movies will compare excerpts from books and plays with scenes from the film versions of the literary works. Once a month scenes from a different and popular book/play and its film version will be featured and each selection will exemplify a different aspect of filmic story telling. Discover why films require their own creative conventions and how filmmakers employ visual and aural techniques to enhance and deepen the tale with as few words as possible. And to add to the enjoyment get the scoop on some of the behind-the-scenes history of the evening's film.

Following are the films we'll be exploring this quarter:

Thursday, December 10
The Color Purple: How to you take interior monologues (letters) and turn them into a visual film experience.

Tuesday, January 12
Breakfast at Tiffany's: Why would you change the tone & ending of a film to please a movie audience.

Tuesday, February 16th
Brokeback Mountain: The process of lengthening and enhancing a short story to fill ninety minutes of screen time.

This series will meet once a month, continuing through June 2010.  No RSVP required, just drop on in and join us for a Night at the Movies.

Jingle Bell Jock! Will Knock Your Socks Off! By Sister Dana Van Iquity
Published: December 24, 2009

For the latest Tom Orr parody production, Jingle Bell Jock!, the Eureka Theatre stage is set with two trees:  one for Christmas hung with jock straps, and the other a blue Hanukkah bush decorated with bagels, dreidels, and blueballs — er — blue balls.  It’s fun to figure out the significance of the array of hundreds of toys.  For instance, a cock on top of an ass (two stuffed toy animals, you pervs), a giant piece of coal, and both a white and a black Santa.  Orr, the best parodist around, begins with a dirty, flirty number describing the show we are about to see, sung to the Best Little Whorehouse tune.  If you, too, suffer from holiday stress, just “Let it go, let it go,” breathe deep, and Ommm yourself to “Let It Snow.”

The ensemble cast changes periodically, with pianist/ soloist/ musical director Dave Dobrusky usually playing the licentious, mean, unclean Grinch. “For a good time, call the Grinch,” croons the green, well-endowed Xmas naysayer with an appropriately deep bass voice and alleged 39-inch boner. That night the female elf was played by Alexis Wong, who is being driven insane by all those annoying “Silver Bells” ringing from Salvation Army bucketeers.

Hopefully on your night, Wong will beautifully belt out the bodacious “Surabaya Santa” (the only lyrics NOT penned by the ostentatious Orr).  The same night, Stephen Vaught played the male elf, who sings of the dangers of “Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland” — what with all the black ice, frostbite, and uninsured vision blurred.  He also sang an SM “Santa Daddy” to the usual “Santa, Baby.”  Giana DeGeiso, for her farewell SF performance, was Mrs. Claus singing of a clinging Santa with “Smile (though your heart is breaking)” and “I Will Survive.”

Orr does his classic hit at tabloid celebs who should be “Bitchslapped” for their awful antics, all to the tune of “Witchcraft.”  Orr sequentially delivers stabs at “Undead Boys” of vampire shows and at Michael Jackson (too soon?); give beatitudes for Bea Arthur with “Bosom Buddies” from Mame; and (changing to cowboy drag) render a clever musical version of Brokeback Mountain.  You’ll be tempted to sing along with “Homo Rodeo Cowboy,” but please don’t.  You’ll have your sing-along moments later on.

Jingle Bell Jock! continues (Thurs-Sun var. times), including a 10:30pm New Year’s Eve show with special guest Connie Champagne, until Jan. 10, 2010 at Eureka Theatre, 215 Jackson St., SF.  Tix ($20) call (415) 374-JOCK or at TheEurekaTheatre.com.

CANDY (Australia / 108 min.)

This is the last film Heath Ledger made in his native Australia. He acted in it right after “Brokeback Mountain’’ and the liberation he feels to express himself is apparent. Geoffrey Rush and Abbie Cornish co-star in this tale of drugs and obsessive love. Presented in its original 35 mm as a tribute to Ledger.

Best Screenplay, Australian Film Institute

60th annual Books and Coffee focuses on coming of age in America

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s weekly February Books and Coffee series will feature books from the 21st century that focus on coming of age in the United States, a theme driven by Purdue’s first Common Reading selection, which will open the series on Feb. 4, 2010.

The 60th annual Books and Coffee, which is free and open to the public, will take place on the West Lafayette campus in Stewart Center, Rooms 302/306. The event begins at 4 p.m. when tea, coffee and hot cocoa are available. The talks by faculty members begin at 4:30 p.m., and the event concludes at 5 p.m. with a free drawing for prizes, including books and sweatshirts donated by local merchants.

The 2010 discussions will include:

    * Feb. 4. Barbara Dixon, associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts, will talk about Bich Minh Nguyen’s “Stealing Buddha’s Dinner.” The book was selected for Purdue’s first Common Reading program, and a copy of the book was given to each incoming freshman. After the talk, author Bich Nguyen, also a Purdue faculty member, will be available to sign her recently released “Short Girls.” Copies will be available to purchase through Von’s Bookstore.

    * Feb. 11. Donald Platt, poet and professor of English, will talk about Annie Proulx’s most recent book “Fine Just the Way It Is, Wyoming Stories 3.” Proulx, also author of the short story that inspired the film “Brokeback Mountain,” will speak at the Purdue’s Literary Awards event on April 22. An additional prize to this week’s raffle will be a copy of the book signed by author Annie Proulx.

    * Feb. 18. George Bodner, A. Kelly Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, will talk about Daniel Wallace’s “Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician.”

    * Feb. 25. Rick Johnson-Sheehan, professor of English, will talk about Barack Obama’s “Dreams from My Father,” selected by popular e-vote by the Student English Association and Purdue students.

Books and Coffee is sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board and the Department of English.

More information is available on the Book and Coffee series at http://www.cla.purdue.edu/English/bookscoffee/

Film Office's Oscar gala moves Downtown to Wilson Center

Talk about your "Twilight Saga: New Moon" souvenirs.

A long, hooded red robe worn during scenes shot in Italy and a poster autographed by the Volturi vampires are among roughly 175 items that will be auctioned during the Pittsburgh Film Office's Oscar gala.

Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and Liam Neeson have signed DVDs of their famous films, including "Gladiator," "Brokeback Mountain," "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Schindler's List." Alex O'Loughlin, who starred in the cult vampire series "Moonlight," has donated an autographed photo while his castmates signed a "Three Rivers" script.

The silent auction also will feature signed Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Ben Roethlisberger jerseys, a Steelers Super Bowl edition football inked by the quarterback along with six Super Bowl etched glass tumblers from Tiffany's.

The March 7 party, which has become a key source of funding for the film office, moves this year to the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, 980 Liberty Ave., Downtown.

As usual, though, organizers will roll out a red carpet, allow guests to watch a live broadcast of the Academy Awards from Hollywood, listen to the funk Motown band Soul Village, nibble from Pittsburgh restaurant food stations and toast the winners or losers.

Tickets, a portion of which is tax-deductible, are $250 for VIPs, which includes a 6 p.m. champagne reception, valet parking and three drink tickets; $125, includes admission at 7:30 p.m. and two drink tickets; or $75, if you buy six or more of the $125 tickets (drinks are separate).

"Lights! Glamour! Action!" marks its 10th year, as the office itself celebrates 20 years. The event is black tie-optional, and a guest came dressed as The Joker from "The Dark Knight" a year ago.

"Everybody can come, everybody can buy tickets," emphasizes Jessica Conner, assistant director of the film office. "A lot of times I hear people say that they always think this is a film industry party and every year, I try to get the message out that we want everybody to come.

"Anybody that loves movies, anybody that wants to watch the Oscars, come, come, come. They can buy tickets on our website, they can call the office," at 412-261-2744 or go to www.pghfilm.org.

Earlham corrects ticket misprints

Those who already have tickets to the Earlham College Artist and Lecture Series events featuring Punch Brothers with Chris Thile on Friday and Michael Pollan on Feb. 27 should ignore the time printed on the ticket.

Lynn Knight, Earlham's events coordinator, said that those events are both at 7:30 p.m., even though the tickets were incorrectly printed 7 p.m.

The bluegrass group, The Punch Brothers with Chris Thile, will appear in Earlham's Goddard Auditorium on Friday.

The group includes guitarist Chris Eldridge, a founding member of the Infamous Stringdusters who also occasionally plays with The Seldom Scene; bassist Paul Kowert, who studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Edgar Meyer; banjo player Noam Pikelny, a solo artist who also has performed with John Cowan and Tony Trischka; and fiddler Gabe Witcher whose work is featured on the soundtracks of films such as "Toy Story" and "Brokeback Mountain."

May 28, 2010  Brokeback Mountain

http://www.grcmc.org/index.php?page=events&event_id=2209

GRAND RAPIDS, FEBRUARY 9, 2010 - “Queeries,” a unique and long-awaited monthly LGBT film series, premieres at Wealthy Theatre on March 19 at 8 p.m.

“Queeries” will feature prominent and cutting-edge LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender) movies in a majestic, safe, smoke-free environment. Tickets are half-price for members of Community Media Center, who also receive bar privileges at Wealthy Theatre - the only brew ‘n view in Grand Rapids!

Titles range from the Oscar-nominated “Brokeback Mountain” to the critically acclaimed documentary “Hannah Free,” which was made in Michigan, directed by former Grand Rapidian Wendy Jo Carlton.

The events will be more than movies, said Wealthy Theatre Director Erin Wilson. The lobby will be a hub of socializing, networking, available information from sponsors and community partners, music, drinks (for CMC members), refreshments, live tweeting on flatscreen monitors and main screen, and much more.

The series premiere (‘Hedwig & the Angry Inch’) will feature live music in the lobby; renown Grand Rapids photographer Terry Johnston will take “glam” photos of costumed attendees, to raise money for the series.

Wilson said a wig will be available for photos that Johnston can snap before the movie starts, and email immediately - a “social media shoot” that can be Tweeted or sent to Facebook in real time from the lobby.

“Queeries will be open to all, informative, fun and fast-moving,” said Speak Equal founder Brooke Murphy. “It’s going to be a party.” (Speak Equal is a “Queeries” sponsor and partner.)

Each movie will be briefly introduced by community leaders and speakers. The premiere (March 19, 2010) title, “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” will be introduced by Tommy Allen (G-Sync, Rapid Growth Media), Colette Seguin Beighley (Exec. Director, GVSU LGBT Resource Center) and Jena Lewis, trans-educator/activist.

The June (National Pride Month) edition of “Queeries” will feature “Fag Bug” director Erin Davies in a Q&A, as she drives from New York to Wealthy Theatre with the Volkswagen featured in her documentary. It will be parked out front the entire day, still featuring the hateful vandalism that inspired the movie.

Queeries is brought to you by the Grand Valley State University LGBT Resource Center, with partners including: The Network, Speak Equal, GR Community Media Center, Wealthy Theatre, Kent County HIV/AIDS, Ameriprise Financial and Rumors Nightclub. The series is made possible through a generous grant from the Arcus Foundation.
