Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 Producer of Gay Play Let Out of Uganda Jail
|
Uganda is a conservative East African country where homosexual acts are a crime, and some lawmakers are pushing to extend the sentence to life imprisonment.
Three days ago, British play producer David Cecil was arrested for staging a play about a gay man. David was released today, however, the situation has not been resolved. He is scheduled to return to court on October 18th and his passport has been confiscated.
It is possible that he can face up to two years in a Ugandan prison.
Cecil operates a small theater and bar in Kampala and has lived in Uganda with his girlfriend and two children for at least three years. He previously told reporters he is not a gay activist, but he is driven to produce great art and simply wanted to contribute to Uganda’s theatrical tradition with a drama about a little discussed, but very real issue faced by people who are gay in Uganda.

The Front Runner Available as E-Book
|
Patricia Nell Warren's book, The Front Runner was published in 1974 and is a love story that explores homosexuality in American sports.
Although the title refers to another character, The Front Runner is the story of Harlan Brown, the track coach at fictitious Prescott College, a new, small, progressive, experimental private liberal arts college sixty miles from New York City.
The story begins in late 1974 and ends in early 1978, with occasional flashbacks giving information about Brown's past. When the story begins, Brown is thirty-nine years old, an ex-Marine, a graduate of Villanova University (where he both ran and coached track), and a rigidly closeted homosexual. Six years earlier he was forced to leave an important head coaching position at Penn State University because of untrue accusations of sexual misconduct from a male student on his track team.
The news of the availability of The Front Runner for Kindle was broken by the author on her Facebook page, where she left this statement:
"The Front Runner is now available on Kindle. Facebook Friends are the first to know, since so many of you asked for the eBook. It's reasonably priced too! Heartfelt thanks to all the thousands of readers who kept this novel continuously in print since 1974."

Protest Over Brokeback at High School
|
Hinsdale South High School English teacher Kristin Wimsatt had a lesson plan that included showing American Beauty and Brokeback Mountain. Little did she know that this would cause protests.
A Christian group called The Illinois Family Institute is protesting the use of the two films in the class, on the grounds that they contain "offensive images of immoral sexuality and violence."
Wimsatt's opinion is that "I have often contended that when students consume films of a more graphic nature in a safe and structured classroom environment, they have an opportunity to process the content in a more thoughtful way, as opposed to a point in his life when he is more likely to watch it alone or with friends and not be able to have mature conversations about it."

Alan Turing Monopoly Board
|
A special edition of the Monopoly game is being produced by Bletchley Park, the Alan Turing Monopoly Board.
Turing’s face adorns ten pound note, and the board's design is based on a unique hand-drawn board in Park museum – a board Turing himself played upon (and lost).
Alan Mathison Turing was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, giving a formalisation of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence.
It has not yet been determined if the game will make any mention of Turing's homosexuality, but this is the first special edition of Monopoly to honor a gay person.

California Performance of Meet Me On The Mountain
|
Many Brokies are familiar with Shawn Kirchner & Ryan Harrison, and their CD Meet Me On The Mountain. We've been fortunate to see many performances of the music on this CD in various states, either on their own, or as a part of Gregory Hinton's Out West program.
We've just found out that another concert is being performed the beginning of next year near Los Angeles.
The Cultural Arts Society of La Verne will be presenting a complete concert experience of the Meet Me on the Mountain CD in January, with all the original vocal soloists from the album -- Ryan Harrison, and Karen Harper and Alice Murray, and a full bluegrass band. Sunday, January 20th at 3 pm.

Actor Rupert Everett - Nothing Worse Than Two Gay Dads
|
Actor Rupert Everett has recently expressed the opinion that gay people shouldn't have children, that there is "nothing worse" than having two gay dads for parents.
His statement has disappointed and outraged a number of gay people, those who are parents and those who aren't, as well as their family and friends.
It's not the first time that Rupert Everett has made controversial statements. Some time ago, he stated that he feels gay actors should stay in the closet, otherwise their careers will be ruined. He feels that is coming out ruined his career.
