Jefferson Airplane Co-Founder Marty Balin Dead at 76.

Jefferson Airplane vocalist-guitarist Marty Balin, who co-founded the San Francisco psychedelic rock band in 1965 and played a crucial role in the creation of all their 1960s albums, including Surrealistic Pillow and Volunteers, died Thursday at the age of 76. Balin’s rep confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone, though the cause of death is currently unknown.

Born Martyn Jerel Buchwald, Balin was a struggling folk guitarist on the San Francisco scene when he formed a band with Paul Kantner after meeting the 12-string guitarist at a hootenanny. They met up with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, bassist Jack Casady, drummer Skip Spence and singer Signe Toly Anderson and cut their 1966 debut LP Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. They developed a strong following around the budding San Francisco rock scene, but became nationwide superstars in 1967 when Anderson left the group and was replaced by Grace Slick.

A little over a year later, Balin quit the group. Balin spent a few years managing rock bands in San Francisco, but was pulled back into the group’s orbit by Kantner in 1974, though by this point Casady and Kaukonen had defected and the remaining members were billing themselves as Jefferson Starship. The offshoot band was incredibly successful and scored more hits than the original Airplane, including the Balin-penned “Miracles” from Red Octopus, hitting Number Three in 1975. But by 1978, Balin grew tired of touring, especially since Slick’s alcohol issues caused many uneven performances, and he left the group for a solo career.

Has anyone listened to Streisand's new songs from the Walls album due out this month? There are several songs out on YouTube....

IMHO, one of her best recordings in that last 20 years or so.....and she's 76 yrs old now too! I love the lyrics as much as the music!!

Great effort by her. I'm not going to say she's the greatest female singer of all time, or greatest Pop Music/Easy Listening Singer of all time, or whatever. But her voice has always allowed her to sing right in the center of the note. I've always loved her quieter, softer voice, just her and a Piano would be perfect all the time. She can't do the Torch Songs, or Broadway Belters anymore, but her quiet, soft voice is amazing........she has the natural ability to project the sound and lyrics perfectly. It's rare not to be able to understand each word she sings.....okay, nuff of my fan soapbox. But if you get the chance, listen to a couple of her songs from this new album........

I guess I'm stuck in the past, or, anyway, my past.

Oddly, lately, I've  been hearing Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69," from his 1984 album Reckless, quite frequently, so yesterday afternoon I pulled the album out of mothballs (so to speak) and played the whole thing.  ;D

Captain & Tennille's Daryl Dragon has died, with Toni Tennille by his side

Ed Masley, Arizona Republic Published 6:26 p.m. ET Jan. 2, 2019

Daryl Dragon of '70s pop sensations Captain & Tennille died of renal failure Jan. 2 at a hospice in Prescott, Arizona, with former wife Toni Tennille by his side, according to his publicist, Harlan Boll.

He was 76.

More commonly known as the Captain, Dragon was a member of the Beach Boys from 1967 to 1972 before forming a duo with Tennille in 1974.

"He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly," Tennille said in a statement. "I was at my most creative in my life when I was with him."

Dragon and Tennille met in the early 1970s and soon began performing together, with Tennille singing and Dragon on keyboards. (He would later serve as Captain & Tennille's producer.) Their breakthrough came in 1975, when they topped the Billboard Hot 100 with a cover of the Neil Sedaka-Howard Greenfield song "Love Will Keep Us Together," which became the biggest-selling record of the year and won a Grammy for record of the year.
