The Outing Of Aaron Schock

Aaron Schock is a popular Republican Congressman from Illinois, and some consider him a 'darling' of the Republican Party.

Schock has a long track record of being anti-gay, and voting against gay rights and voting for ways to restrict gay rights.   In the past he has voted against the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, voted against the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and is for a amendment to the constitution that would restrict marriage to one man and one woman.

Over the weekend, noted journalist Itay Hod went to Facebook and supposedly outed Aaron Schock as a gay man, when questioning whether or not the media has a need to point out the hypocrisy of closeted, gay politicians.

Since this post the internet has been flooded with images of Schock and questions of his sexuality.  Hod goes on to say that Schock has been caught in a shower with a man, as well as filmed by TMZ being at gay bars.

Schock has not responded, but in the past has said he is heterosexual.  Schock's Instagram account has been locked, it contained shirtless pictures of him.

The Paul Ryan/Aaron Schock Love Affair?!?!

So are you in the mood for some Political Fan Fiction that's rated XXX?

Fan fiction has been around for years, and this very forum has a Slash Section that contains links to many stories that retell the stories of Jack and Ennis in various ways.  There is also a variety of slash that is titled RPS (Real Person Slash) that is M/M fiction about real people, and not fictional characters.  There is a new story that is circulating the 'net now that follows these guidelines.

Tastes vary (of course) but there are some people who find former Vice-President candidate Paul Ryan attractive.  This also goes for Aaron Schock, who you read about in the previous story.  Well, someone has decided to place them in a work of fan fiction together.

Titled "Paul Ryan XXX" the story is described as "well written" and as a 'pornographic gay love affair between Ryan and Schock'.  I haven't read it, so I can't verify if it is 'well written', but perhaps some of our Fan Fiction/Slash authors and readers can check it out and let us know if it deserves that description.   Three parts are posted so far of the story, you can get to it at the link below.

Utah Mormon Starves Himself in Protest

The state of Utah became one of the most recent states to legalize gay marriage.  Many viewed this as "ironic" or "karma" as Utah is the home of the Mormon Church, which donated millions to get Prop 8 in place in California, banning gay marriage there.  That has since been overturned.

One Mormon man has decided to launch his own protest to this development.  Trestin Meacham is now on a hunger strike, claiming that same-sex marriage is 'evil' and is hoping his hunger strike will help change the tide of gay marriage.

Meacham has been living off bottled water since December 21st of 2013, occasionally taking vitamin supplements as well.  He's lost 25 pounds so far, and says he's fasting to convince Utah to "nullify" the decision.

'Some things in life are worth sacrificing one's health and even life if necessary. I am but a man, and do not have the money and power to make any noticeable influence in our corrupt system. Nevertheless, I can do something that people in power cannot ignore.'  says Meacham.

Vikings Football Team in Spotlight

The Minnesota Vikings football team find themselves in the middle of a scandal, which has come to light because of former Viking Chris Kluwe, pictured left.

Chris Kluwe was a Viking for 8 years, and in May of 2012 was fired from the team.  The team's management claims it was due to his performance on the field, however, Chris Kluwe believes it was because of his activism for the LGBTI community.

Kluwe is back in the spotlight, this time because he is publicly stating that he was fired for his activism, and accusing the Assistant Coach (Michael Priefer) of anti-gay bigotry.  Kluwe claims that Preifer has made the following statement: 'we should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows.' He also accuses Priefer of treating him badly and being homophobic as Kluwe's activism increased.

Preifer claims that Kluwe is destroying his character, and making the claims up.  The Vikings management is looking into the allegations.

Renewed Rumors of a Reunion

We've discussed this story before, and the rumors seemed to die down, but this week they've come alive again, a Dawson's Creek reunion may be on the horizon.

In the most recent development, former cast mate Katie Holms has been rumored to reach out to Michelle Williams to do the reunion.  Apparently the two actresses did not get along well when they worked together, and Holms would like to use the opportunity to make amends and get the reunion started.  Joshua Jackson appears to be on board as well, and he reportedly feels that if Katie and Michelle both sign on, that the last cast member (James Van Der Beek) will follow and the line-up will be complete.

We wrote about this story back in July of 2012, and reported that one of the reasons that the reunion was not taking place was because Tom Cruise (then married to Katie Holms) felt it was "going backwards" in her career to do the show.

When asked in 2012 about being part of the reunion, Michelle Williams had this to say:  "I would very happily do a reunion show, I don't know what it would be," Williams, 31, told the crowd, laughing as she added, "My character died in the end, so there are certain limitations for me. It's either I come back as a ghost or I'm shot through a lot of gauzy, hazy light as my nineteen-year-old self."

Filming to Begin For Everest

Prisoners is over, Enemy is getting attention, but Jake Gyllenhaal's attention is now on Everest.

The fictional movie is set to start filming in Val Senales, Trentino Alto-Adige, Italy, and as the title suggest, follows a group of experienced hikers who decided to take on a climb up Mount Everest.  Things start well, but then take a turn for the worse as they have to deal with a sudden, powerful winter storm.

This is actually one of two movies that are being made about Mount Everest, but with a filming start date of January 13th, the Jake Gyllenhaal starring vehicle is the first to get started.

Aside from Jake, the cast includes Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes, as well as others. Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, based on the screenplay developed by William Nicholson and Justin Isbell.

Holocaust Memorial for Gay Victims in Tel Aviv

A memorial has been erected in Tel Aviv Park, dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust.  However, this is the first memorial in Israel that includes victims of the LGBT community.   The plaque was made to resemble the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear on their uniforms in the concentration camps, and (in part) reads:   "In memory of those persecuted by the Nazi regime for their sexual orientation and gender identity."

The landmark joins similar memorials in Amsterdam, Berlin, San Francisco and Sydney dedicated to gay victims of the Holocaust. While Israel has scores of monuments for the genocide, the Tel Aviv memorial is the first that deals universally with Jewish and non-Jewish victims alike and highlights the Jewish state's rise as one of the world's most progressive countries for gay rights.

Transgendered People Feel Like "Public Domain"

Recently, Katie Couric (center) interviewed transgendered actresses Carmen Carrera (RuPaul's Drag Race - left), and Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black - right) and during the interview, she veered into the topic of sex reassignment surgery and whether or not the women have had that surgery.

Carrera told Couric that was private.  When Couric persisted, Cox replied:  "The preoccupation with transition with surgery objectifies trans people and then we don't get to really deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people's lives is that so often we're targets of violence. We experience discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the LGBT community. ... By focusing on bodies, we don't focus on the lived realities of that oppression and that discrimination."

Cox's statement expresses a truth that transgendered people experience.  When they reveal they are transgendered, they are often exposed to ridiculed and attacked physically.   There are numerous cases of transgendered women being beaten and murdered by men, and the attitude that follows tends to be was that the transgendered person asked for it/deserved it.

Strange Path for Gay Marriage in Utah

Shakespeare — 'The course of true love never did run smooth.'  The same can be said for the path to marriage equality in the state of Utah.

On December 20th of 2013, gay citizens of Utah got an early Christmas present when a lower court ruled that the state's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional.   Immediately following the ruling, gay couples began lining up to get their marriages licenses.  Not long after the ruling, the governor of the state applied for a stay on the decision, saying he was "very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah.”

That stay was initially denied, and gay couples continued to line up and apply for marriage licenses.

Two weeks later, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the stay, saying the decision should be stayed “to minimize the enormous disruption to the state and its citizens of potentially having to ‘unwind’ thousands of same-sex marriages.”   The latest wrinkle to this is that 1,300 gay couples were legally wed, and they are now in limbo.   Representatives for the state of Utah have stated that they will not recognize the marriages.  However the Dept. of Justice of the US have stated that they will recognize the marriages, and consider them valid.

Actress Lily Tomlin Weds Her Partner

Lily Tomlin is a legend, having been on Broadway, in movies and on TV.   She rose to fame with her memorable characters Edith Ann (and that's the truth...pbbbht!) and Ernestine (one ringy-dingy) that she made famous on Laugh-In.

After conquering TV, she moved to the big screen, and her role in Nashville earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.  Numerous films followed (including the successful 9 to 5).  She returned to TV, earning recurring roles on multiple shows:  Murphy Brown, Will & Grace, The West Wing, Desperate Housewives.

Through it all, she was with her partner, Jane Wagner.  To quote Tomlin:  "I certainly never called a press conference or anything like that.  [Back in the '70s,] people didn't write about it.  Even if they knew, they would [refer to Jane as] "Lily's collaborator," things like that.  Some journalists are just motivated by their own sense of what they want to say or what they feel comfortable saying or writing about.  In '77, I was on the cover of Time.  The same week I had a big story in Newsweek.  In one of the magazines it says I live alone, and the other magazine said I live with Jane Wagner.  Unless you were so really adamantly out, and had made some declaration at some press conference, people back then didn't write about your relationship. ... In '75 I was making the Modern Scream album, and Jane and I were in the studio.  My publicist called me and said, "Time will give you the cover if you'll come out." I was more offended than anything that they thought we'd make a deal.  But that was '75 -- it would have been a hard thing to do at that time.  Everybody in the industry was certainly aware of my sexuality and of Jane...in interviews I always reference Jane and talk about Jane, but they don't always write about it."

On New Year's Eve of 2013, Tomlin and Wagner were wed. Congrats to the long-time happy couple!

Thomas Hitzlsperger Comes Out

Thomas Hitzlsperger is a German footballer who had a successful career, earning 52 caps and being selected for the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.  He was known as "The Hammer" after the power of his scoring shots.  After experiencing a series of injuries, he retired from the sport in September of 2013 at the age of 31.

He was engaged to be married, but cancelled that engagement in June of 2007.  On January 8th of 2014, Hitzlsperger came out as gay.

When asked what he thought about the chances of a footballer coming out while he was still active, Hitzlsperger said that he felt that was a long way off.  "Since we haven't seen a gay footballer in the Premier League or the Bundesliga, it's hard to say that this would happen.  We would have to wait and see.  I didn't really know what to expect now.  I just decided it was the right moment for me to do this and not really thinking about the reaction.  Gay football players are invisible. There are none we know of and that's why I don't know how people will react to it."

He went on to say that he had thought about coming out himself about two years ago, but wanted to continue to play, and felt that competition was more important that discussing his personal life.

Johnny Weir in The Crossfire

As you all know, the Winter Games this year are being held in Sochi, Russia, and there have been protests due to the fact that Russia has instituted some anti-gay laws.   The laws make it illegal to display pro-gay propaganda in front of Russian minors.   This law is not 'clear' on propaganda, and gay people are being arrested and beaten for just wearing a rainbow flag pin or patch.

Although there have been calls to boycott the Olympics, the US is sending a team of athletes to compete.  However, the team's delegates include three out athletes, hockey player Caitlin Cahow, tennis player Billie Jean King, and figure skater Brian Boitano.

Openly gay Johnny Weir will be the NBC correspondent for the games, and he has stated that he feels the games are not a place for political statements, but for sports and competition.  He now finds himself in the crossfire of those who believe he should be boycotting the games.

"My statement is simply being there and being gay and showing the world and the Russian government that there is nothing weird or wrong with me and that there is nothing weird or wrong with the LGBT community in your country, so we should not be treated as pariahs."

Russian Gay Rights Protester Arrested

Pavel Lebedev  is a gay Russian citizen, and he was attacked this time last year when he was taking part in a protest against he current Russian anti-gay laws that prohibit "spreading homosexual propaganda".  His attacker was sentenced to two months in a labor camp.

Lebedev is back in the Russian news, this time as the one being arrested.  He lives in a town about 560 miles away from Sochi, where the Olympic games are to be held.  When the Olympic torch ran through his town, Lebedev stood up and unfurled a rainbow pride flag.  He was immediately approached and attacked by members of the "Olympic Security Officials".

The report quoted Lebedev as saying in a phone interview while at the police station: “Hosting the Games here contradicts the basic principles of the Olympics, which is to cultivate tolerance.”

Did Article Cause Trans Woman's Suicide?

Journalist Caleb Hannan (left), recently wrote an article on golf club inventor Dr Essay Anne Vanderbilt, and was trying to verify facts about her studies at MIT and the University of Pennsylvania.  While he was digging, he discovered that Dr. Vanderbilt was born male, and he wrote this into the piece.

When Vanderbilt discovered this was to be included, she objected to this, and wanted the information removed from the story.  Vanderbilt said it was just as if Hannan was ‘about to commit a hate crime’ by publishing the information.   Meanwhile, Hannan refused to sign a nondisclosure agreement concerning her past, saying: ‘The “deal” was one I could not accept.’

The piece ran with the information in it.

Shortly afterwards, Vanderbilt was found to have committed suicide by her business partner, Gerri Jordan.

Ohio Appeals Pro-Gay Ruling

John Arthur and Jim Obergefell made headlines last year with their marriage in June.   Unable to marry in Ohio, they flew to Maryland for a 7 minute ceremony, and then flew back to Ohio, the plane chartered with donations from friends and family.  The rush was because John Arthur was suffering from Lou Gherig's disease, and they needed to be married so the two could be buried together in the Obergefell family plot, which was only open to family or kin.

An Ohio judge ruled that the state of Ohio must recognize out-of-state gay marriages, on the basis that the state recognizes out-of-state straight marriages.  Judge Timothy Black went on to state that he believes the state's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

John Arthur died in October of 2013 after being with Obergefell for over 20 years, and married for 4 months.  Because of this ruling, Arthur was able to be buried in the Obergefell plot.

The state of Ohio this week has filed a notice of appeal to a federal ruling that resulted in Arthur's death certificate recognizing that he was married to Jim Obergefell. 'Our job is to defend the Ohio Constitution and state statutes … and that’s what we intend to do,' said State Attorney General Mike DeWine.

The View's Sherri Shepherd - "Gays Go to Hell"

Sherri Shepherd has been a cohost of The View since 2007, and has decided to address an issue that she feels needs to be.  There is a claim that she is homophobic, which she refutes.

However, she also says that she was raised on the bible, and in the bible it states that homosexuality is a sin, and homosexuals go to Hell.

'I might not agree with your lifestyle, but I love you,' Shepherd says. 'You may not agree with my lifestyle, but you love me ... I don't say it's a choice. If you tell me, "Sherri, I was born gay." OK. I'm not gonna argue with you, because I can't tell you how you feel and what's going on inside.'

She goes on to say that she's trying to get into Heaven "by the skin of her teeth."

Marone goes on to talk about Heath Ledger the actor, and how he went on to attempt to sculpt a bust of the Joker as portrayed by Ledger.  He also talks about how he felt with he heard the news of Ledger's death, and how it prompted him to stop the sculpture.  This blog entry not only discusses Ledger, and how Marone viewed him as a fan, it also reviews the action figure for The Joker and includes detail pics of the toy and accessories that come with it.

Anne Hathaway in Silver Linings?

At last year's Academy Awards, Anne Hathaway took the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Les Miserables.  However, was it possible she would've won for Best Actress as well?

In a recent interview with the "King of All Media" Howard Stern, super-producer Harvey Weinstein revealed that when it came to the movie Silver Lining Playbook, it wasn't Jennifer Lawrence that was the first pick for the role of Tiffany, but it was Anne Hathaway who first showed up on the set.

During the interview, Weinstein discussed how the original cast included both Mark Wahlberg and Anne Hathaway.  Wahlberg backed out of the project, and was replaced with Bradley Cooper.

However, issues arose on the set between director David O. Russell and Hathaway, and they began to butt heads.   According to Weinstein: "She's marvelous, and wonderful, and she was my choice, I love her, but then whatever happened, happened. ... David and Anne had some creative differences. They didn't see eye-to-eye."   This resulted in Anne leaving the project, and after a quick scramble, was replaced by Jennifer Lawrence.

Brokeback Opera is Just Around The Corner

Brokeback Mountain, the Opera, is the next meeting place for Brokies next month, a group of 20 will be converging on Madrid to see this new opera, with a libretto from Annie Proulx.

BayCityJohn (one of the attendees) has been continuously updating our thread about this gathering with information, pictures and videos.

I'm guessing that as the event gets closer, more activity will be seen there.

Does Coke Mix with Sochi?

Usually the Olympics are a 'looked forward to' event, sports fans from around the world watch athletes representing their countries, going for the gold.  This year is a Winter Games, being held in Sochi, Russia.

After the games were announced, Russia instituted their anti-gay propaganda law, which has resulted in a large number of LGBT individuals being arrested and/or beaten.

There are calls to boycott sponsors of the Olympics, and one of those sponsors is the Coca Cola company.   Coca Cola had an iconic commercial back in the late 70s, with people of various ethnicities all holding Coke, and singing "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing".   A new video is now going viral, which contains this classic commercial, mixed with new footage of Russian LGBT citizens being attacked by police.

What they didn't know was that Nazma is a lesbian, and in a relationship with Sarah Harrison.  Sarah is not Muslim and is white, and Nazma believed these factors would be unacceptable to her family.

While the family believed the marriage was going to happen, Nazma was quietly moving her things into Sarah's home.  Once she was ready, she told her family that she was gay.

This resulted in angry texts to Nazma from family members, and a "family plan" where Sarah Harrison was to be kidnapped in an effort to keep her from Nazma.  6 of Nazma's siblings went to the clothing store were both Nazma and Sarah worked, and waited outside.  When Sarah left for home, they attacked her in the parking lot, beating her, and attempting to kidnap her.   They tried to bundle her up and get her into the back of a car, but Harrison fought back and they were unsuccessful.  The 6 were later arrested.

A judge sentenced them all to up to 6 years in prison, and placed a restraining order on them to stay away from Nazma and Sarah.  Sarah left her job, fearing to go back, but she and Nazma remain a couple.

Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World

Fan fiction has been around for decades, and you can find stories based on Star Trek, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Merlin, Brokeback, Sherlock, Twilight, and even about real people, such as Paul Ryan & Aaron Schock, and Henry Rollins & Glenn Danzig punk rock/metal performers in the story Henry Loves Glenn.

For better or worse, a spotlight was put on fan fiction after the success of 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, which was originally fan fiction based on the Twilight series.

A new book explores the success of fan fiction, and it was recently released.  Titled Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World, the book contains the thoughts of the author (Anne Jamison) as well as comments and essays from fans as well as authors.

Dave Agema Refuses To Step Down

Dave Agema is currently serving as a Michigan Republican National Committeeman, but he now finds himself in the middle of a scandal for comments he's made.

Agema has recently made comments where he 'applauds the common sense of Russia's anti-gay propaganda law', and later went on to question whether any Muslims had contributed positively to society.

He has since been asked to step down from his position, but refuses too.  Now some Republicans are trying to distance themselves from him. Agema had this to say:

'I have learned much over the last several weeks and will use the lessons learned to improve on my abilities to further the best interests of all people of Michigan, through my role as a proud member of the Republican National Committee.  'My personal beliefs and public statements expressing them as a public figure, has been attacked by a few strident advocates for homosexual marriage seeking to change Republican, Michigan and America’s mores and laws'.

Anne Hathaway Is Back

Anne Hathaway is back, though you may actually be wondering, "Where did she actually go?"

As you may recall, there was quite a bit of backlash against Anne after she won the Academy Award for her role of Fantine.  People began to criticize her in general, her style, her attitude, and her acceptance speeches.  So much so that the critics became known as "Hatha-haters".

The end result was that Anne took a break from public appearances, red carpet events, and things of that nature.  When asked about it, Anne replied with:  "My impression is that people needed a break from me."

This is no longer the story, as Anne has three movies coming out in 2014, four if you count her voice-over work in Rio 2.  Anne is currently in Sundance at the Sundance Film Festival promoting the film Song One, which she also produced with her husband, Adam Shulman.

Queens & Cowboys Premiers At Film Festival

A new documentary is making news.   Independent filmmaker Matt Livadary always wanted to be a cowboy, and he decided to make a film about the rodeo circuit.  As he began filming, his path crossed with the IGRA (International Gay Rodeo Association), and Matt soon found himself taken by the stories of the competitors on this circuit.  Matt's film then changed, from following a rodeo circuit, to following the IGRA's circuit, and befriending the cowboys and cowgirls who compete.  The title of the film became Queens & Cowboys - A Straight Year on The Gay Rodeo

Matt expressed to them his desire to be a cowboy, so they took him under their collective wings, trained him, and let him compete with them.

Made with money raised on Kickstarter, and then on  Indiegogo, the film is now having a premier at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

DCF member Jim.Grr stated that some footage from his competitions MAY be in the film.   If you watch the trailer, just after the 30 second mark,  you'll see a cowboy getting dressed in drag, being asked about strategy, and saying he needs to scare the bull.  This is Gene, the partner of late DCF & BetterMost member LoneLeeB3.

Enemy Release Date for the US

In his latest movie (Enemy), Jake Gyllenhaal plays a dual role.  He plays a college professor who becomes obsessed with finding a minor actor he spots in a film, who looks remarkably like him.  The professor is a single man (although he has a girlfriend) and the actor is an expectant father.  When their paths finally cross, neither man's life will be the same.

Enemy is based on The Double, by author Jose Saramago.   It is the second time that director Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal worked together, they also worked on Prisoners, but Enemy was filmed first.

When the film premiered at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival, critics applauded and everyone was gobsmacked by the film’s twisty, existential ending.

Enemy is scheduled to be released in the US on 3/14/14.

Sochi Olympics About To Begin

Much has been written about the Sochi Olympics.  Terrorist threats, anti-gay laws, possible boycotts, safety of the athletes, and soon the Games will be upon us.

Athletes from countries around the world will be meeting to compete against each other in winter sports such as skiing, speed skating, bobsledding, figure skating, luging, biathalon, snowboarding, and other events.

The opening ceremonies will take place on February 7th, and you can see a complete schedule of events at the link below.

Church Membership Revoked for Being Gay

20 year-old Bobby Pierce of Mount Hope has been a member of Ambassador's Bible Chapel for years, and was baptized there.

Pierce recently received a letter from the church, which stated that his membership there was being revoked, and that he would be denied communion, because of his sin of homosexuality, and his refusal to repent and live a Christian lifestyle.

Rather than accept this, Pierce took the letter and posted it on the York Daily Record Facebook page.  He said it was his desire to let others who may be going through this very thing that they were not alone.

This has caused some backlash against the church, and Pastor David Slautterback has said that people are accusing the church of hate actions.  His reply is that he feels Pierce's actions of sharing the letter with the York Daily Record is an action of hate.

Slautterback said Friday that he and the other elders want Pierce to repent for his sin and to return to fellowship at the church, where he is still welcome to attend as long as he does not cause division or speak contrary to scripture.

Arson Suspect Arrested

Seattle police released a statement saying they've arrested a 30 year-old suspect in an arson case.

On New Year's Eve, 750 people were partying at the local gay club, Neighbours.  An arsonist poured gasoline down the carpet covered steps, and lit them on fire, and ran off.   Thankfully no one in the club was hurt.

Detectives from SPD's Arson/Bomb Squad, along with members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, have been investigating the case.  Police said they received tips from the public. They interviewed the man after the arrest and booked him into the King County Jail. No other information has been released.

Kate Mara Testing For Fantastic Four

20th Century Fox has been working (struggling) with a Fantastic Four movie for some time now.   After the success of The Avengers film, super heroes are hot again, and the Fantastic Four could be another big super hero hit, following in the footsteps of the prior Fantastic Four movies, released in 2005 and 2008.

After much 'back and forth', a director has been selected (Josh Trank - The Chronicle) and screen writers (including Simon Kinberg, who worked on an X-Men film) are getting the script ready.  Now all that's needed is the cast.

Kit Harrington (best known from Game of Thrones) has said he's up for the role of Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic.   Actresses Saoirse Ronan and Kate Mara (House of Cards, Brokeback Mountain) are testing for the role of Susan Richards, The Invisible Girl.

Jake Gyllenhall & Amy Adams In Ezekiel

The Prohibition Era drama Ezekiel Moss is finally moving forward, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams coming aboard to star.  Philip Seymour Hoffman* has long been attached to direct the film from a Black List script by Keith Bunin.

Adams will play Iris, who, emotionally fragile after the loss of her husband, runs a boarding house to get by and provide for her spirited son, Joel. They reside in a small town overrun by religious fervor, and their lives are forever changed when she begins to fall in love with Ezekiel Moss (Gyllenhaal), a mysterious drifter who has the divine ability to channel and physically inhabit the spirits of the dead.

*Please note, this was posted for TDS before the news of the untimely death of Philip Seymour Hoffman.   Thoughts and prayers to his family at this time.

The Olympics are underway, with opening ceremonies having taken place on Friday 2/7.

It is our hope that the games are completed safely, with no incidents, and that all athletes compete safely.

Bisexual Speed Skater Wins Gold

Ireen Wüst, a female Dutch speed skater who identifies as bisexual, has won a gold medal in Sochi.

Wüst took to the medal podium, and held up three finges, each painted to match a color of the Dutch flag.  Had she painted gold, it would've worked as well.  This is her third gold medal, she also won in 2006 (Turin) and 2010 (Vancouver).

After her win many sites proclaimed an "out lesbian" won the gold medal, but the truth is that Wüst identifies as bisexual.   She is one of only 7 LGBT athletes who are competing in the Games in Sochi amid the political scene set by Russia with an anti-gay propaganda law.

We can assume that we've not heard the last of Wüst as her statement after winning was:  “It’s three in a row, and I want to become even more unique.”

Will The NFL Get Their First Openly Gay Player?

There has been talk about gay players in the NFL (National Football League) for some time, specifically after Viking player Chris Kluwe took a pro-gay stance while a player, and now claims he was cut from the team because of it.

It now seems that the NFL will get their first openly gay player.  Michael Sam (right) is a member of the Missouri college team. He was named a first-team all-American. He was the defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference, widely considered the top league in college football. Teammates voted him Missouri’s most valuable player.  In an interview with sports channel ESPN, Sam stated:  "I am an openly, proud gay man."

His decision to go public about his sexual orientation comes less than two weeks before the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis, an event where draft prospects show off their skills and are tested by the 32 NFL teams.

“We admire Michael Sam’s honesty and courage,” the NFL said in statement. “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014.”

So....How About That Opera?

Last weekend Brokies were in Madrid, having a gathering and attending the premier of the opera version of Brokeback Mountain, with the libretto written by Annie Proulx, the author of the original short story.

Reviews of the opera have been mixed.  High praise was given to the cast, specifically to Daniel Okulitch (Ennis Del Mar) and Tom Randle (Jack Twist) for their singing abilities, as well as how accurately the embodied the characters that we've come to know and love

However, the staging was an area that got critical reviews from Brokies, as well as  Charles Wuorinen's music, which has been described as:  predictable, horrible, annoying.  There has also been discussion of Annie Proulx's libretto.

If you'd like to read what's been said, or join the conversation, feel free to do so by clicking the link below.

Federal Benefits Extended

The effects of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) being repealed by the Supreme Court last year continue to be felt.  The latest ripple is that more federal benefits are being extended to gay couples who are married, even if the state they live in does not recognize their marriage.

The move impacts how millions of Americans interact with the federal government, including bankruptcy cases, prison visitation rights, survivor benefits for police officers and firefighters killed on the job, and the legal right to refuse to testify to incriminate a spouse.

Human Rights Campaign, which advocates equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, called it a "landmark announcement" that it "will change the lives of countless committed gay and lesbian couples for the better."

Conservatives have defined this as an 'overreach' by the federal government.  Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, criticized what he called the latest move by the Obama administration "to undermine the authority and sovereignty of the states to make their own determinations regulating the institution of marriage."

Blondie Refuses to Play Sochi

Musical icon Debbie Harry, lead singer for the group Blondie, revealed that the group was approached to play a show at the Sochi Olympics, but turned down the event due to the human rights violations taking place in Russia.

Harry took to Twitter to post a photo of the offer by the Red Rocks Festival which is being held in Sochi as part of the Cultural Olympiad which surrounds the games. On it she had written, ‘Pass – human rights.’

The offer that she Tweeted included a figure the band was to be paid, but Harry's message obscured the figure.   The tweet became a favorite on Twitter, with 1,000 people retweeting it, and 600 'liking' it.

The Voice Project is an organization that uses the power of music to bring about positive change.

On February 6, they held a party at The Spotted Pig, and the purpose of the event was  to support Pussy Riot,  to aid with legal efforts to secure the freedom of the imprisoned members of the group, to meet the security, care and support needs of Nadya and Masha while they are incarcerated in the labor camps as well as care for their young children. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina have been convicted and sent to two of Russia's most notorious labor camps for two year sentences as punishment for a peaceful protest that the all-girl group staged in Moscow's Orthodox church last February.

In attendance were actor Peter Sarsgaard, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, and her brother, actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

Will Anne Hathaway Intern?

Hollywood insiders were wondering for some time whether or not Nancy Meyers' "The Interns" was going to get made, as this film was really experiencing a bumpy ride.

The movie was to be made staring Tina Fey, and then it stalled, and Fey backed out of the project.  After time it was revived, this time starring Robert DeNiro and Reese Witherspoon.  It stalled again when Witherspoon dropped out of the project.

It seems the project is being revived again, and now talks are underway with Anne Hathaway to fill the vacancy that Witherspoon left behind.

In the project, Hathaway will be playing the founder of a fashion-based e-commerce company who agrees to a community outreach program where seniors will intern at the firm. De Niro will play the new hire, and his elderly character becomes indispensable at the firm.

A Second Out Athlete Medals At The Olympics

Last week we saw Ireen Wüst, a female Dutch speed skater who identifies as bisexual, win a gold medal in Sochi.

Out athletes can add another medal to their count, as Daniela Iraschko-Stolz from Austria won a silver medal in women's ski jump, the first time this event was held at the Olympics.

Iraschko-Stolz, who is married to her partner, caused controversy when she said she thought the reaction to Russia’s anti-gay laws had been “exaggerated”.  She has, however, said that she hopes eventually things will change for the better for LGBT people in Russia.  “I hope for the future that the people now can see the sport as a chance to change something. That would be nice. Because everyone looks at Russia and its laws, and I think it’s a good idea to change something.”

Westboro Pickets, Students Counter-Protest

There has been much talk of Michael Sam, the Missouri student who is looking like a top draft pick when he graduates this May.  Before graduation (and draft picks could be made) Michael came out to his teammates and publicly with an interview with ESPN.

Sam and his teammates were honored at half-time of a college basketball game.  However, a dark cloud was threatening to rain on the parade.

The Westboro Baptist Church announced they would show up to protest the game, and Michael Sam specifically.

In a show of support for Sam, thousands of students showed up, locked arms, and turned their backs to the Westboro picketers, and sang fight songs and their alma mater to drown out all the noise by the Westboro picketers.  While the students were successful with their counter-protest, the Westboro Baptists issued a statement via their Twitter account: 7 billion could #StandWithSam but it still wouldn’t change God’s proclamation that it’s an abomination, @the_antlers!

Italy's First Openly Transgendered Elected Official Arrested In Sochi

Vladimir Luxuria was an elected official in Italy, and she was Italy's first Openly Transgendered Elected Official.

News outlets are now reporting that she was arrested in the Olympic Park in Sochi, when she stood in front of the Olympic rings, and held up a rainbow colored banner that said "Gay is OK" in Russian.

She had a picture taken, and it was placed on Twitter with the following caption:  'I'm in Sochi.  Regards with the colors of the rainbow, in the face of Putin!'

Last year Russia enacted a law that is being called the "anti-gay propaganda" law, which makes it illegal for people to put pro-gay propaganda in the view of minors.   However, people are being beaten and arrested for just wearing gay pins or flags.  One man was arrested when he waved a gay pride flag as the Olympic torch passed by.

Virginia Is For All Lovers

LGBT citizens of the state of Virginia got an early Valentine's Day present, as a federal judge struck down the state's ban on gay marriage as unconstitutional late Thursday, February 13th.

The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Arenda Wright Allen in Norfolk, Virginia, added momentum to growing acceptance of gay marriage in the United States.  Judge Allen stated she struck it down as it denied gay couples the fundamental freedom to marry.

The decision in Bostic v. Rainey, in which two gay couples sought to strike down the Virginia ban, follows two high-profile rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court last year.  Those decisions allowed gay couples to get married in California, and struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal law that denied federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.  Following the decision against DOMA, the states of Oklahoma and Utah had federal judges find their bans against gay marriage unconstitutional as well.

Currently, 17 states and the District of Columbia recognize gay marriage, 8 of those states joined the total of 17 just last year, showing a momentum for support of gay marriage.

Is This Why Dorothy Left Kansas?

While the story above celebrates how far we have come, this story shows how far we have yet to go.

The House of Representatives voted on and passed a bill that is being referred to as "turn away the gays".  The bill is being pushed as support for "religious liberty", meaning that businesses owned by people who practice a religion that declares homosexuality is a sin would legally be able to deny their goods/services to gay people.  It would also forbid gay people who felt they were being discriminated against from suing.

The Kansas House passed the bill with a vote of 72 for, to 49 against.  Three Democrats, and all the Republicans supported it.

The good news is that the bill may have stalled in the Senate.  Senate President Susan Wagle said a majority of the Republicans in the upper house will not vote for the bill, and that none of the Democrats support it.  She went on to say:  "A strong majority of my members support laws that define traditional marriage, protect religious institutions and protect individuals from being forced to violate their personal moral values.  However, my members also don't condone discrimination."

'The Job Is an Ego Crushing Ass-Kick to the Soul. I Love It!'

Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Translation, Burn After Reading, Atonement, Milk, The Pianist, The Constant Gardener and Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy were all Focus Features pictures, all produced by James Schamus.  You can add Dallas Buyers Club to that list, and James Schamus is looking forward to Oscar season to see how well it does.

However, it's a bittersweet moment for him, as he has been fired from Focus Features.

Schamus has a Phd in English Literature and spent his entire 20s in full-time education at Berkeley. He opted to write a dissertation on the Danish film-maker Carl Theodor Dreyer, and left California for New York in order to work on it, where he also started writing screenplays.

He sat down with Emma Brockes from The Guardian, and talked about his time with Focus, taking gambles, snobbery, and his being fired.

Roberta Maxwell in Off Broadway Play

Roberta Maxwell is a respected Broadway actress, but is best known to us as "Ma Twist" from Brokeback Mountain.

Maxwell will be back on the stage this year, in the off-Broadway show Hellman v. McCarthy.  She will share the stage with Marcia Rodd and Dick Cavett.

The Brian Richard Mori’s play (directed by Jan Buttram) will have a limited engagement at the Abingdon Theatre Company's June Havoc Theatre March 14 through April 13. Opening night is set for March 26.

The play is based on one of the most notorious literary feuds that was sparked January 25, 1980.   Mary McCarthy (Marcia Rodd) appeared as a guest on The Dick Cavett Show.  During her appearance she stated that "every word [playwright Lillian Hellman] writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'"  This resulted in Hellman (Roberta Maxwell) suing McCarthy for libel, and the lawsuit lasted for more than four years.

Turn Away The Gay

In last week's TDS we discussed the state of Kansas and the Republicans of the state passing what was called the "turn away the gay" law.  This law was described as a way for religious business owners turning away gay couples, and not being sued for it, because the law would allow them a 'religious belief protection'.  Kansas Senate president Jeff King killed that bill.

This week, Arizona's Legislature has passed a similar bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.  The bill now goes to the state's governor, Republican Jan Brewer.  She is a one-time small business owner who has stated that businesses should have the right to turn away who they want to, however, when a similar bill was placed before her in the past, Gov. Brewer vetoed it.

As expected, the measure has drawn criticism from Democrats and business groups who said it would sanction discrimination and open the state to the risk of damaging litigation.

Demonstrations against this bill have already taken place, with protestors carrying signs that read:  "Shame on Arizona" and "God created us all equal".  The Tucson-based business "Rocco's Little Chicago Pizzeria" responded by placing a sign in their window that reads:  "We reserve the right to refuse service to Arizona legislators."

Southern PR Campaign for Gay Marriage

Freedom to Marry, the national pro-gay marriage organization based in New York, will announce a new $1 million television ad campaign at a press conference Monday in Atlanta. The campaign, dubbed Southerners for the Freedom to Marry, will highlight prominent politicians and community leaders who back same-sex marriage.

This campaign is not an attempt to legalize gay marriage in the south, every state in the south has passed a constitutional ban against gay marriage, it is rather a move to build public support for gay marriage.  They are hoping that by building public support, it will result in positive outcomes for about 2 dozen lawsuits challenging the bans.

In recent months, judges in Oklahoma, Kentucky and Virginia have struck down state bans on same-sex marriage, though those rulings are stayed until the U.S. Supreme Court weighs in.

The Courage of Transgender Soldiers

In 2011 DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell) was repealed and this allowed gay and lesbian soldiers to openly serve in the military.  However, this decision did not include transgendered individuals.  They must keep themselves hidden if they wish to serve in the military.

This is not true for all countries.  Currently there are 12 different countries that allow transgendered soldiers to serve openly in defense of their countries.  Great Britain and Australia are among those 12.

At this time, the American military defines gender nonconformity as a psychological disorder. So transgender soldiers serve in silence, facing dismissal if exposed.

Nine percent of transgender people who have served in the American military report being discharged because of being transgender or gender nonconforming. Almost all of the rest stay quiet for fear of harassment or abuse.

According to data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the number of veterans seeking advice on transgender issues has doubled in the past 10 years. And hundreds of currently serving transgender members of the armed forces have joined an underground support movement called SPART*A

Billie Jean King and the IOC

Tennis star and out lesbian Billie Jean King was originally to be part of the US Olympic delegation, but she had to withdraw due to the failing health of her mother, who passed away on February 7th.  She was then named to be part of the delegation who attended the closing ceremonies.

In an interview with the BBC, King issued this statement:  'Hopefully [IOC president] Mr [Thomas] Bach and the IOC will think about the next time they give a bid out - I hope that they'll look at discrimination as a big part of it, But no country is perfect. America certainly isn't,'

Obama made headlines when his delegates for the opening were openly gay athletes including US hockey player Caitlin Cahow and Brian Boitano, a former Olympic figure skating champion. Many believe Obama was sending a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the country's 'gay propaganda' laws.

Anti-Gay Pastor Launches International Coalition

Look out! The Coalition for Family Values has been formed, and looks to strip gay people of their rights.

The Coalition was formed by Christian evangelical pastor Scott Lively and Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality.  The Coalition's mission is to lobby governments to strengthen or enact anti-gay laws like in Russia, Nigeria and Uganda.  They also intend to 'unify and coordinate pro-family groups around the United States and the world to more effectively oppose the now global LGBT agenda.

The Washington Blade reports that more than 70 anti-gay activists and religious leaders from the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K. and Brazil, and at least one US lawmaker – Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern – have joined the coalition.

Aid Cuts to Uganda

Uganda's President  (Yoweri Museveni) has signed into law an anti-gay bill that will result in numerous gay men being thrown into prison for life, just for being gay.  When the news broke on this actions, reactions from other countries was swift.  Norway, Denmark, and The World Bank have all said that financial aid to Uganda is being frozen.   The United States, the biggest Western donor, says it is reviewing ties.

Lawmaker David Bahati, (left) said aid suspensions were tantamount to blackmail but that he expected more to follow.  He went on to say:  "The law is very much worth it because it will protect our values. I think a society that has no moral values is a contradiction to development.  It's also unfortunate that the World Bank would take such a decision ... and create an impression that accepting homosexuality is a condition for World Bank money when it is not."

Once the law was passed, Uganda's leading Red Pepper tabloid last week began outing those it called the country's "top homos".  This has caused many gay men to go into hiding, and a number of them have left the country.

It's been reported that there are increased occurrences of night-time house raids, as well as harassment since parliament passed the law in December.

Scotland Offers Asylum

As the story above stated, gay men appear to be leaving the country of Uganda after the recent anti-gay law.  In a surprising move, Scotland has offered to grant asylum to any Ugandan who is persecuted by the new laws.

Humza Yousaf, a Scottish member of parliament and minister for external affairs was quoted saying:  "The Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda is a huge step back for equality and I have written to the UK Government asking it to make the strongest possible representations to the Government of Uganda,"

All of this is coming to a head when the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are to take place this summer.  Prominent members of the Ugandan government are expected to arrive in the city.

Bridgewater School and The Senior Awards

A Bridgewater High School finds itself in the news, because of the senior superlative awards.

When Sam Schwartz entered the school as a freshman, she sported long hair, and favored a feminine style of dress.  She now says that was because she was trying to conform to what she believed was expected of her.  While a student at the school, Schwartz came out as a lesbian and was accepted by her classmates.  She then began to change, to how she wanted to be seen.  She cut her hair short, and began to dress in a more traditionally masculine style.

Now a senior, Schwartz found herself to be nominated in the "Biggest Transformation Since Freshman Year" race, and in fact did win the contest.  However, the school declined to give her the award.

An online petition quickly appeared, and soon had over 900 signatures to support Schwartz.  Monday afternoon, a post appeared on the #SupportTheSchwartz Facebook group page claiming victory for Schwartz.

Transgender Opponents Fail to Turn Out Vote

On Jan 1st of this year, a new law took effect in California that guarantees students in grades K-12 the right to use the school restrooms and to participate in the sex-segregated activities that correspond with their expressed genders instead of their school records.  It was considered a step forward for transgendered rights.

Opponents of this bill want to have it overturned, and they organized their efforts to achieve this goal, gathering signatures in an effort to have it put up to a vote.  They gathered 619,387 signatures, however county election officers determined that just 487,484 of them were valid, which made their petition short of the required signatures necessary to force a vote on repealing the law.

Karen England of the Privacy for All Students coalition said the proposed referendum's backers are not conceding defeat yet.   "We are preparing for the next stage of the battle," England said in a statement. "After months of waiting, we now get to see why so many signatures were thrown out. Certainly some signers were not registered to vote or had moved without changing their address. But it is also certain that many of those signatures were rejected based on reasons that will not survive a legal challenge."

Cummings & Williams Talk to The Press

Tony winner Alan Cumming and Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams went to  The New York Times headquarters on February 24, and talked about bringing Cabaret back to Broadway this spring.

One of the topics that Michelle Williams discussed was taking dance lessons for her part in the show.   “They were generous enough to start me a few months before everyone else. I’ve been taking classes in a studio in Brooklyn and I'm basically being a kid there. I feel like a baby,” she said. “I get to rehearsal, and I'm like, ‘What do I do?’”

They also discuss getting ready to appear at the legendary Studio 54, and Cummings also talks about bringing an audience member on stage with him during is 1998 stint of this show.

Cummings also pokes fun at his age saying:  “You know, I’m fitter now than I was when I first did the show 16 years ago. Although, I do have to go for more naps now.”

Anne Hathaway at The Oscars

Anne Hathaway, last year's winner for Best Supporting Actress, was on hand at this year's Oscars to present the Best Supporting Actor award, which went to Jared Leto for his role in Dallas Buyers' Club.

Hathaway had been keeping a low profile lately, talking about people online who became known as "The Hathahaters".  The Hathahaters were posting their negative thoughts about Anne, which prompted her to pull back from the public light, stating "people seemed to be tired of me".

Hathaway was wearing a Gucci gown, picked for her by her new stylist.  After 10 years with stylist Rachel Zoe, Hathaway felt it was time for a change.

Queen Elizabeth II Praises Gay Charity

The London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard has just celebrated its 40th birthday.  This organization is a phone switchboard that gives LGBT people a non-judgmental ear when they are looking for support.  This event was celebrated at a gala evening attended by a plethora of celebrities, politicians and supporters.

One of the most significant comments came from Queen Elizabeth II, who stated:  ‘Best wishes and congratulations to all concerned on this most special anniversary.’

The comment may not seem like much, but it is believed this is the first time that the Queen has ever addressed any organization that caters to the LGBTI community.  In her 62-year reign of the UK and the Commonwealth, she has never once visited or become a patron of a charity for gay rights.

Even when the laws of England were being changed regarding gay marriage and the like, the words ‘gay’, ‘lesbian’, ‘bisexual’, and ‘transgender’ have never been reported as crossing the lips of the reigning monarch.

Others Watched While He Was Bashed

JP Masterson and his partner Peter Moore were spending an evening out on the town to celebrate their 10th anniversary.  They were in the subway, at the 4th Street Station in Greenwich Village, when they were approached by a man.  At first they thought he was looking for help or directions, but then he asked if they were gay.  Before they knew what was happening, the stranger attacked JP, knocking him down and punching his face over and over, all the time saying he 'hated' gays.

The attacker ran off without being apprehended, and JP said there were about 50 other people who stood on the platform and did nothing to help him.

JP suffered seven broken bones to his face, eye socket and nose.  He said he has difficulty breathing through his nose, as it is off center.

Police say that what set off the attacker was the fact that JP & Peter were holding hands.  Responding to this, JP said:   'New York State, all these other states are passing, you know, gay marriage – minimally, to be able to hold hands on your 10-year anniversary should not be an issue,'

Whipped For Having Gay Sex

Four men were whipped in court in Nigeria for admitting to having gay sex, and then were given the option to pay $120.00 (US) or face a year in jail.

The four men in question were between the ages of 20 - 23, and they were beaten before they admitted to their crimes.  The men were then sentenced to 15 strokes, and then given the option of cash or jail time.  When the sentence was handed down, the judge said he was being 'lenient' because the four men said that the sex had happened in the past, and they have since  repented.

Homosexuality can carry the death penalty under Shariah law in some northern Nigerian states although it’s typically not enforced. The BBC reported that although details about the latest case are sketchy, its reporter in Bauchi, Ishaq Khalid, says court officials have confirmed the whippings. The case was first heard last month but was disrupted when an angry crowd demanded the death sentence for the four.

Nobel Peace Prize Race - Putin vs. the Gays

Russia’s International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation of Peoples of the World have nominated Vladimir Putin for the Nobel Peace prize, for his work in helping stop the crisis in Syria last year.  However, Russia is now involved in Crimea, as well as the numerous human rights violations against gay and lesbian Russian citizens.

By coincidence, Putin is competing for the Peace Prize against Ugandan gay rights activist Frank Mugisha, Russia's gay advocate Igor Kotchetkov, and Nepal’s first openly gay politician Sunil Babu Pant.

Peace Research Institute Oslo revealed Norwegian politicians Anette Trettebergstuen and Hakon Haugli put forward the gay rights activists’ names. It is believed they were all put forward to recognize the work they have done fighting against injustice and discrimination across the world. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Pant said: ‘I am happy that the Norwegian parliamentarians recognized the LGBTI struggle. ‘We promote love and love promotes peace.’

US Student Tennis Star Comes Out

Matt Dooley is a senior student and tennis player at Notre Dame University.  He made headlines on March 3rd when he came out as gay, and also was willing to talk about a suicide attempt in his past.

Dooley discussed how he learned at an early age that being gay was "wrong", and that it took a toll on his wellbeing.  When he arrived at Notre Dame to study, he was well aware of the conservative arena he was entering, and it was a difficult situation that he was not prepared to deal with.  One night, after getting drunk, he took a bottle of pills in a suicide attempt.  He didn't even leave a note, because he thought he wouldn't be missed.

Since coming out, Dooley has stated that his teammate have become a 'brotherhood' and that he feels a great deal of support from them.  He is also working with "You Can Play", an organization that fights sexual discrimination in sports.

Annie Proulx Says:  "Get A Life"

Annie Proulx sat down with Elizabeth Withey of the Edmunton Journal, and discussed a number of different topics.  One of them topics was the opera version of Brokeback Mountain, and how she worked with Charles Wuorinen to write the libretto.  It was quite a process, that took about 6 months of 'back-and-forth' between Proulx and Wuorinen.

The next topic she talks about is the 2011 memoir Bird Cloud.  The book is centered around the jinxed construction of her dream house, and is a genre switch for her.  Her fans have heaped praise on the book, but reviews have been mixed, and Proulx herself has doubts about it being published:  “I probably shouldn’t have published it. I probably should have tossed it in a drawer somewhere.”

Proulx took part in the Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference, and was asked what she would say to young authors.  Not one to mince words, Proulx replied:   “Get a life! Get. A. Life. Live it. Later on, think about writing. Do something. Don’t sit down and write something out of the vacuum. Learn some languages, travel, read some books, learn how to cook, chop wood.”

Fred Phelps Sr. On His Deathbed

Fred Phelps Sr. is best known as the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, which earned notoriety when their website went up with the URL "GodHatesFags. Com".  An extreme church, they made themselves famous by protesting funerals of soldiers, celebrities, Matthew Sheppard, and AIDS Victims.  Their protests included signs that read "Fags Die, God Laughs",  "God Loves Dead Soldiers" and other offensive slogans.

Many people took comfort in the fact that this church had under 50 members, and most (if not all) were members of the Phelps family.  They also take comfort in the fact that many of the family members have left the church, and renounce it.

One of those who left (about 37 years ago) is Phelps Sr's son, Fred Phelps Jr.   Jr. recently issued a statement through Facebook that he's found out that his father is on his deathbed, that his father was excommunicated from the very organization he founded, and that church members are keeping other family members from seeing him before he dies.

A number of people are online asking if gay organizations will get together to picket Phelps' funeral.

Cameroonian Lawyer Compares African Anti-gay Situation to Slavery

Alice Nkom (left) is a lawyer in the African country of Cameroon, and she has spent more than a decade using her skills to defend gay men and lesbians who are bought up on charges under the tough anti-gay laws in the country.  She often compares the situation to apartheid and slavery.

Male and female homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon and carries a maximum five year prison sentence and a fine. Speaking of daily life for gay Cameroonians, she said progress is being made but there is still an atmosphere of fear, recounting how LGBT people in Cameroon must watch even the smallest gestures, because parents will turn in their children.

Nkom has been quoted as saying:  "Currently in Cameroon, it’s an anti-homosexuals apartheid.  ‘When a country uses weapons, the police and all available legal and prison means against a section of it’s population, while it has a commitment to protect, it is apartheid."

Nkom has criticized Ugandan President Museveni, and urged other countries to not back down to African leaders who tell them to 'back off'.

Indiana Bakery Cites "Religious Freedom"

Another bakery, this time in Indiana, is making news for refusing to make a cake for a same-sex wedding, and they are citing "religious beliefs' as their reason for the refusal.

The bakery, named 111 Cakery, is now facing an online backlash on their Facebook page, as multiple Facebook users go and leave messages in support of the couple they turned away.   Owners Randy and Trish McGath issued a statement on their page which reads (in part):  'It was not that we wanted to deny them a cake, it’s just tough to create something that goes against your beliefs,' they wrote. 'Was this the right thing to say? Maybe not. But this phone call caused us to do a lot of soul searching because we want to be right with our God as well as respect others.'

The couple who attempted to purchase the cake (Mike Stephens and Shane Laney) has since found another bakery to make the cake for them, but they thank everyone for their support, and hope this will lead to steps towards equality in Indiana.

New York Church Says:  Jesus Would Stone Homos

The ATLAH World Missionary Church is located in Harlem and is led by New York City Pastor James David Manning.   Pastor Manning is proud of the anti-gay sermons he gives in the church, and recently has extended those views outside the church to their outside sign, which now says "Jesus would stone homos" and "Stoning is still the law".

Pastor Manning has gone on to say that Christians who do not believe in stoning homosexuals are supporting "lawlessness" and even posted a video to YouTube where he discussed the stoning of homosexuals.  This video was quickly removed by the website, which stated the video broke its rules regarding posting hate speech.

According to the gay media right group GLAAD an organization called the LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent took out an ad in the Amsterdam News criticizing Manning for his hateful rhetoric.

St. Patrick's Day Boycotts

St. Patrick's Day parades and celebrations take place in major cities across the US, but this year, we are seeing boycotts of the parades due to their wanting to keep LGBT celebrants out of them.

One of the first official boycotts was by NY Mayor Bill de Blasio, and his boycott marks the first time in 20 years that a NYC Mayor will not be in the parade.

The city of Boston is also seeing boycotts.  Boston Mayor Martin Walsh will not be attending his city’s massive St. Patrick’s Day parade after the event’s sponsor, the South Boston Allied War Veterans’ Council, rejected an application by gay rights group MassEquality to allow 20 LGBT service members to participate.  Walsh isn’t the only politician staying clear of the parade in Boston. More than 45 city councilors, state legislators who represent Boston, statewide elected officials, U.S. representatives and senators, and gubernatorial hopefuls will not be participating on Sunday.

This led to Boston Beer company Samuel Addams to issue a statement that they would no longer be a sponsor for the St. Patrick's Day parade in Boston.  They were quickly followed by Heineken, who said they will no longer sponsor the NYC parade.  The beer company Guinness will not withdraw support, so the gay bar Stonewall Inn has said as of 3/17, they will no longer serve Guinness beer, and other NYC gay bars are expected to follow.

McMurtry & Goodwin Named As Sandburg Honorees

The Chicago Public Library and its foundation have picked two very high-profile authors  to receive the 2014 Carl Sandburg Literary Award at the library and foundation's annual gala on October 22nd.  The recipients are historian Doris Kearn Goodwin and author Larry McMurtry.

Goodwin is the famous presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author who has penned such critically-acclaimed biographies of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy and his family. Her most recent book is “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism.”

McMurtry is the author of 29 novels, including “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Lonesome Dove,” which won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was turned into the award-winning television mini-series. Many of his other works have been adapted for film and TV, including “Hud” (from the novel “Horseman, Pass By”), and the aforementioned “The Last Picture Show” and “Terms of Endearment.” Along with co-writer Diana Ossana, McMurtry won the best adapted screenplay Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain,” based on Annie Proulx’s short story.

First Protest After Phelps' Death

Just two days after the death of Westboro Bapstist founder Fred Phelps' death, Westboro Baptist Church was already doing a protest, this time at pop star Lorde's concert.

A counter-protest showed up, with people standing behind a big banner that read "Live Your Life And Be Awesome!"  The counter-protesters said that if the concert goers had to see the negative messages of Westboro Baptists, they should also see something positive as well.

After the protests started, a third group appeared across the street, faced the Baptists, and unfurled a banner that said "Sorry For Your Loss", referring to the death of Fred Phelps.   Megan Coleman helped make the sign stating it wasn't about antagonizing members of the church, but she wanted to send a positive message.

Two days before the show, Lorde found out about the protest, and posted a Tweet asking fans to come to the show in rainbow clothes.

Radio Host Wants LGBTI People Out of Military

The American Family Radio host and Fox News contributor Sandy Rios has made statements against LGBTI people serving in the military, saying that "trannies" and gay men are "disordered".

Her full quote is:  ‘Transgendered soldiers who are confused about their sexuality, who want to undergo gender reassignment, homosexual soldiers who are constantly thinking about their sexuality - and I say that with authority, having interviewed so many ex-gays and talked about this for years, there is an obsession - their identity, they think, is their sexuality.  How many of you who are heterosexual would first of all say to someone in describing yourself, ‘I’m heterosexual; I have sex with the opposite sex’? You have much more of an identity than that, don’t you? ‘Well for homosexuals, they claim that as an identity, it’s all about sex, so that is a disorder in itself. You can write me, I realize that’s angering words but that is a disorder because that’s not who you are, you are much more than that. ‘It is a disorder, it is disordered thinking and if we think that soldiers that are obsessed with these issues are going to provide strong defense for our nation, I think we are foolishly denying whatever is true.’

Gay Marriage in Michigan

Federal Judge Bernard A. Friedman declared Michigan's ban on gay marriage, saying the state failed during a two-week trial to justify a prohibition that he said violates the equal protection rights of gays.

This is not the first time a judge has struck down a gay marriage ban, however, it was different in the fact that he issued no stay on his decision, which opened the door for gay marriages to start right away.  An appeals court issued a stay one day later, stopping the marriages, however, by that time dozens of same-sex couples had been married in the state.

Like other federal judges in Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah who have struck state bans, Friedman relied on two Supreme Court precedents: Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state bans on interracial marriage in 1969, and last June’s U.S. v. Windsor, which overturned part of the Defense of Marriage Act withholding federal benefits from same-sex couples married in states where such unions are legal.

When the decision originally came down with no stay, at least three county clerks opened their offices on Saturday, and began issuing marriage licenses.

Japanese Hotel & Temple Welcome Same-Sex Marriage

Gay marriage is not yet legal in Japan, but Hotel Granvia and the Shunkoin Temple, both in Kyoto, have joined forces and issued statements saying that they will now honor gay marriage ceremonies on their property.

Since the statement was issued, gay and lesbian couples (dressed in kimonos) have flocked to the Zen temple which was built in the 1590s to have their ceremonies.

The Granvia is the first Japanese hotel to join the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) in 2006 and openly promotes LGBTI travel to Japan.  Shiho Ikeuchi, Overseas Marketing Director said: ‘It is our challenge to bring these extraordinary weddings to the world. 'We are thrilled to offer LGBT couples from around the world this wonderful opportunity to experience the essence of a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony.'

Illinois Republican Susanne Atanus beat David Earl Williams III on 18 March, in the GOP primary for Illinois' 9th Congressional District.  This past January, Atanus lost the support of state Republican party because of anti-gay comments made in an interview with Think Progress. 'God is angry.  We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions. Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.'   She's also made past comments about tornados being the fault of gay equality.

The Republican Party of Illinois issued a statement that they did not support her candidacy, and it would be best if she stepped down.  She refused, and voters gave her the win over Williams III.

Atanus will be on the November ballot against Democrat, and incumbent, Representative Jan Schakowsky.

Kate Mara's Star Power

Kate Mara has been an actress since she was a young teen, landing a role at 14 on the TV series Law & Order.  Over the years, she's landed numerous roles on TV, and has also appeared in the critically acclaimed films 127 Hours and Brokeback Mountain.  Despite all this work, Kate hasn't broken into the spotlight.  This is about to change.

Thanks to Kate's strong performances in the Netflix series "House of Cards" as reporter Zoe Barnes, Kate has been gaining much more attention, and more offers for other roles.

A recent Tweet from Kate read:  "Feeling Invisible....In a wonderful way".  This was her way of confirming that she had officially signed on to play the Invisible Woman in the upcoming film reboot of the Fantastic Four series.  The prior two films were summer blockbusters when they were released.

Kate will star with Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), Miles Teller (Dr. Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm/The Thing).  The film is expected to be another summer blockbuster for 2015.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Everest Pushed Back to 2015

Jake Gyllenhaal's newest project, the adventure thriller Everest, has just been pushed back from an opening in February 27 2015, to September 18th, 2015.

The movie is based on the 1996 expedition to scale Mount Everest by two different teams.  On their way up the mountain, the teams were hit by a sudden, blinding storm, which resulted in the deaths of some of the climbers.  The script uses various books as well as interviews with survivors of those teams as source material.

So What Do You Want?

Hello fellow Dave Cullen Forum members!

In just about one month, I will be celebrating my second anniversary as the editor of TDS.  Since the debut of TDS there have been numerous changes in how it is handled, who is handling it, and what stories appeared here.

In my time here, I've tried to feature LGBT news while ending each issue with news on some of the principals who gave us Brokeback.  I tried to avoid gossip, but I'm sure some snuck in from time to time.  :D  When I did focus on other stories (ex:  the presidential election) those stories still pertained to gay and lesbian issues (ex:  where the candidates stood on gay marriage).  While I do get messages from time to time suggesting stories, most of the input comes from my own searches on the net.  When I first took this position over  I asked what you wanted to see in TDS.  I'm asking again.  Do you feel there is too much gay news here?  Do you want more general stories covered?   If there is something you feel is missing from TDS, please feel free to post in the "Reply To The Daily Sheet" thread, which is linked below.

Putin Top Aide Seeks Asylum, Comes Out

After the Olympics, the Ukraine, and the human rights issues regarding LGBTI citizens in Russia, one would think that we had heard all the political scandals we could about Russia, but Putin and his cabinet are being rocked by a new scandal.

One of Putin's top aides has fled Russia, currently seeking asylum in the UK.  He has come out as gay, and says he can no longer live in his home country.

The aide (whose name has not been released) is extremely upset at the prospect of being returned to Russia, yet he also fears for reprisals against his family, who are still in Russia.

Prime minister Tony Blair is currently in secretive meeting regarding the asylum-seeker, and while he does want to be sympathetic, he is also aware that this could cause an international incident, and is thinking over all possible options.

Russia has denied the story is true, and says that there are no gay people involved in the Russian government, and that all of Putin's aides and advisors are still in Russia.

Push For "Crash" at National Film Registry

The National Film Registry is beginning promotions for this year's nominations of films that should be added to the Registry.  For those who don't know, it is a very prestigious occurrence, to have a film added to the registry.

Fans and many in Hollywood were surprised when "Crash" defeated "Brokeback Mountain" for film of the year, and Brokeback fans may be dealt with another surprise when it comes to nominations to the registry.

Many involved with the film "Crash" are angry/bitter over the fact that after all these years, Brokeback is still considered the movie that should've won the Best Picture award, as well as the fact that "Crash" consistently appears on lists of films that did not deserve the award it won.  They intend to fight back against this 'undeserved' label by making sure there is a very strong push behind "Crash", in the hopes it will defeat "Brokeback Mountain" a second time, and get the spot on the National Registry.

Sources in the Registry reveal that the actors who starred in the movie are gearing up for a "10th Anniversary" release of the DVD, with appearances and interviews, and DVD packaging will contain information on the National Registry's website, and how to properly vote for/support "Crash".

GOP To Support Rick Santorum's Run for President

Politicians for both parties are looking forward to the presidential election in 2016, and both parties seem to have front-runners for their party.

The Democrats seem to be placing their bets on Hilary Clinton, who has a large public following and positive numbers in polls.

The Republicans (for some time) have had their sights on NJ Governor Chris Christie, but with his recent scandals regarding the George Washington Bridge and the use of Sandy Recovery money, he has fallen out of favor and much to everyone's surprise, Rick Santorum has moved to the top of the pile.

Santorum ran against Mitt Romney for the primary, and lost.  The party was looking for someone who was more 'middle ground' than Santorum, who has a number of policies that were considered too far-right to represent the party.  In recent months, the GOP is starting to see benefits for selecting someone who is much more conservative than Mitt Romney was, and Santorum is making it known that he is the man for the job.

While Santorum would still need to win a primary, he is already working with speech-writers and spin-doctors to help his image.

Logo TV Network to Air 'Gay Bachelor'

Reality TV continues to score high ratings, and "The Bachelor" is one of the top rated TV shows around.  There has been talk of a "gay bachelor", which has been laughed off.  Now, it seems the project may see the light of day.

Logo TV is an LGBTI television network, which runs gay themed tv shows in syndication (such as Will & Grace), or has a strong gay following (Golden Girls).  They also show TV specials of gay favorites, such as Kathy Griffin comedy specials.  They also have their own reality TV shows, they are the home of RuPaul's Drag Race, The A-List NY, and The A-List Dallas.

Logo is now developing their own version of The Bachelor.  The show (to be called - The Stud) will feature one gay man who will have 14 other men attempting to get him to pick them as his perfect match.  The Logo show will have one significant difference - one of the contestants will be a straight man.  If the straight man can get through to the end and have The Stud pick him, he will win one million dollars.

Are Jake & Michelle an Item?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams have been friends for some time now, but has the time come for friends to become lovers?  It has, if Busy Phillips has anything to say about it.

The pair met when they filmed the movie Brokeback Mountain together in Canada, and remained close ever since.  Michelle was in a relationship with Brokeback's other star, Heath Ledger, he is the father of their daughter Matilda.

After Heath's death, Michelle took some time to heal, and has since been in a few high-profile relationships that haven't worked out.   Jake has also had his own high-profile relationships, but has maintained a close relationship with Michelle.  Michelle's friend Busy Phillips has started playing matchmaker, and recently convinced Jake to see Michelle in NYC while she's working on her play.  The two have been spotted out for late night dinners, and many are beginning to say that they are becoming more than friends.

Diana Ossana Looks for Writer of "Bubby"

Oscar winner Diana Ossana is best known as a writer and producer, known for Brokeback Mountain (2005), Johnson County War (2002) and Hope's Wish (2014).

Always looking for the next deserving story, she believes she's found it, but now she needs to find the author.

Diana has told friends she's been given a piece of fan fiction.  Fan fiction is hot right now, after the success of "50 Shades of Grey", and Diana feels she has a hot property on her hands.  Diana was given a piece of Brokeback fan fiction, a story called "The World According To Bubby" which was written by the mysterious author "HeathyLuv".  Based on Brokeback Mountain (which Diana did the screenplay for), "Bubby" is an alternate story of Jack & Ennis adopting a cat from a shelter named Bubby, and the story is told from the point of view of Bubby.

Diana has wanted to try her hand at comedy for some time, and "Bubby" could be the perfect vehicle for her, she just needs to find the elusive "HeathyLuv" to discuss the rights to the story.

Republican blames 'new fascism'

There has been a lot of news coverage of Brendan Eich, the newly appointed CEO of Mozilla, who had to step down after just two weeks when it became public knowledge that he had made donations that fought against the marriage equality movement.

This has caused a lot of public debate about gay rights, and the right to free speech.  Newt Gingrich has recently added his opinions to the debates:   'If you’re a young faculty member, in a lot of places, if you’re a young member of a news department, and you have the wrong views, meaning conservative, you have no career.   This is just the most open and blatant example of the new fascism, which says if you don’t agree with us 100%, we have the right to punish you, unless you’re like Hillary [Clinton] and Barack Obama, and you recant.'

Others have voiced similar opinions to Gingrich's.   Bill Maher blamed Eich's having to step down on the 'gay mafia' while Blogger and author Andrew Sullivan accused the 'gay movement' of ugly intolerance:  'The whole episode disgusts me – as it should disgust anyone interested in a tolerant and diverse society.  If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out.  If we are about intimidating the free speech of others, we are no better than the anti-gay bullies who came before us.'

Ohio Judge Plans to Strike Down Gay Marriage Ban

Federal Judge Timothy Black of Ohio has announced that he plans to strike down the gay marriage ban in his state.   He plans to issue his decision on April 14th, but the advance notice gives the state time to prepare an appeal to his decision.

The ruling is the result of a case in front of Judge Black now.  The case consists of 4 same-sex married couples that are seeking an order that would require the state to place the names of both parents on the birth certificates of their children.  Three of the couples are lesbian couples who are expecting children in Ohio.  The last couple is a same-sex married couple that was married in New York City, but their adopted child was born in Ohio .

The Department of Heath in Ohio will not issue or amend birth certificates to name both parents.

Danny Pintauro of "Who's The Boss" Weds Partner

From 1984 - 1992, ABC ran the very popular sitcom "Who's The Boss".   The cast included two-time Emmy and Tony winner Judith Light, Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano as Tony's daughter, and Danny Pintauro as Judith's son.

While most of the cast went on to other acting jobs, Pintauro opted to attend school, graduating from Stanford University where he studied English and theater.

He also came out as a gay man, and at the beginning of April, married his partner Wil Tabares at a sunset beach ceremony.  Pintauro is now a restaurant manager, while Tabares is a casino entertainer.

"Everything went off without a hitch," Pintauro, 38, says. "The wedding was terrific and everyone was so happy to be there. We had fun! ... We went into it with no stress or worries or cares, except to have a good time."

Neil L. Andersen Argues Marriage is Reserved for Straight Couples

Neil L. Anderson, a leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was at the church's biannual general conference, and he used the opportunity to repeat the church's opposition to gay marriage.

While he was addressing the conference's attendees, he said:  'While many governments and well-meaning individuals have redefined marriage, the Lord has not.  He designated the purpose of marriage to go far beyond the personal satisfaction and fulfillment of adults, to more importantly, advancing the ideal setting for children to be born, reared and nurtured.'

He later went on to say:  'everyone, independent of their decisions and beliefs, deserves our kindness and consideration.'

While the church's stance on gay marriage has not changed, for gay people in general, the views appear to be softening.   Church leaders in 2012 issued a statement admitting that same-sex attractions are not a choice, and they have opened a website to stimulate conversation on that topic.  They also continue to support the Boy Scouts of American despite the fact that the BSA changed their policies and now accept out members.  The Associated Press has said that there are numerous reports of gay Mormons who left the church (or were kicked out) that are now returning to the church, and bringing their partners with them.

Canada's First Christian Law School Will Ban Gay Students

Trinity Western University is Canada's first Christian Law School, and they are preparing for their first classes to start in September of 2016.  However, there are some specific rules that the school has instituted that have others calling it 'abhorrent,' 'discriminatory,' 'hateful,' 'anachronistic' and 'fundamentally wrong'.

The school's student handbook states that all students must not practice 'sexual intimacy that violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman', and it goes further  to say, 'Further, according to the Bible, sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage between one man and one woman, and within that marriage bond it is God’s intention that it be enjoyed as a means for marital intimacy and procreation.'

Students and staff must not only read these statements, but sign off saying they understand them, and agree to uphold them.  Students can face disciplinary measures for violating the policy either on or off campus.

Critics of this policy have stated that hey wonder what this school will teach students about equal rights and discrimination when they openly discriminate against gay students.

Gay Clergy Defies Ban and Marries

Gay marriage was legalized in the UK recently, and one couple that was able to finally marry was Jeremy Pemberton, and his partner Laurence Cunnington.   Their marriage, however, is going to cause a crisis for the church.

Pemberton is a hospital chaplain and this marriage makes him the first clergyman from the Church of England to enter into a same-sex marriage.  This will cause issues because the marriage is in direct defiance of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Church has also stated its opposition to the recently enacted same-sex marriage laws.

Gay clergy can already enter into civil partnerships if they promise to remain celibate, but these are primarily legal arrangements while marriages include public vows.

One senior traditionalist cleric in the Church’s General Synod was quoted as saying: 'This will become a crisis if no action is taken.'

NOM Compares Fight Against Gay Marriage to the Struggle Against Slavery

NOM (National Organization for Marriage) is comparing the fight against marriage equality to the battle against slavery.  The group has started their new fundraising campaign, which they call, 'Keep the Republic & Marriage'  and NOM compares people who stand against gay marriage to those who fought slavery.

In their propaganda, NOM states:  'Facing similarly vicious attacks in the decades leading up to the Civil War, America’s abolitionists recalled the timeless insight that “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," The wisdom of these words applies as much today as then.'

This is not the first time that NOM has used the strategy.  Two years ago, it was discovered that NOM was trying to pit African-Americans against the gay community by sending out propaganda that said: 'African-Americans to take umbrage when different forms of discrimination are compared.'

When the Supreme Court decided against DOMA (Defense Of Marriage Act) in June of 2013, NOM tweeted this message, and then later deleted it: 'Sad day for our nation. Founding fathers would be ashamed of our gen. to abandon wisdom of the ages re: cornerstone of strong societies.'

Pharrell Williams "Happy" to Support Gay Marriage

Pharrell Williams (known professionally just as Pharrell) is a recording artist and producer, and his star is on the rise.   He got his start in the business as a member of N.E.R.D.  Pharrell then moved on to different projects, and became a high-demand producer....working with Gwen Stefani, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Maroon 5, Madonna, and others.  He's now making a name for himself as a recording artist, having topped the charts as the vocalist for the Daft Punk project "Get Lucky" and the current hit "Happy".

Pharrell voiced his opinion when he filmed the April 10th appearance of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he said he believed in equal rights for everyone. To thundering applause, he said: ‘When I say equality, I mean equality for everybody, Why are you telling people who they can and cannot marry? This is 2014,’

He went on to say that he titled his current CD "GIRL" to show support for women's rights:  ‘But at the same time there is a lot of inequality with women. ‘We have legislators and legislation in certain places that tell women that they can and cannot do with their bodies. How is that possible?’

Anne Hathaway As Pop Star?

Anne Hathaway is no stranger to singing, she's sung on TV, appeared on soundtracks, and played Fantine in Les Miz, belting out the movie's signature song, "I Dreamed A Dream".

She recently completed work on Rio 2, and she worked with artist/producer Will.I.Am, who has said he wants to work with Anne on some pop songs.

Will.I.Am is a member of the Black Eye Peas, and together the group has scored numerous Top 10 hits.  He's also produced songs for Fergie and her debut CD, and scored a hit with Brittney Spears called "Scream & Shout".

After working on Rio 2 with Anne, Will.I.Am said:  "I want to make music with you!  From Rio 1, I was like, 'She sings like that?!' ... It would be so amazing to do music outside of an animated film. That would be freaking dope."

Hathaway responded with:  "I am blushing so hard right now,  The thing is, he's going to get me in the studio and then he's going to hear me for real, and he's going to be like, 'Oh, never mind.' [I mean] he works with [Black Eyed Peas'] Fergie! That's like his 9am meeting. I can't beat that!"

Jake Gyllenhaal Is The Matthew McConaughey Of 2014

Most Hollywood careers have ups and downs, not every movie or TV show is a hit.

Jake Gyllenhaal has had his ups and downs, and a recent article by Emily Exton compares Gyllenhaal's career to Matthew McConaughey's.

In her article, Exton says:  After an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Ang Lee‘s Brokeback Mountain, as well as films from Sam Mendes and David Fincher, the only thing left for him to do was take his shirt off in a big-budget video game adaptation, make googly eyes at Anne Hathaway in a rom com about Viagra and go on public man dates with Lance Armstrong. As Gyllenhaal’s star power surged, we, and most of Hollywood, lost sight of his talent and only thought about his… face. And just as the infamous cyclist fell from grace following a doping scandal, moviegoers forgot about Gyllenhaal’s true chops following a few less than stellar films and a new crop of Next Big Things arriving from across the pond.

However, Exton goes on to say that Gyllenhaal's career is back on the rise, after critically acclaimed performances in End of Watch, Prisoners, and Enemy.

Do you agree with the points that Exton makes, or do you think she's off the mark?   Read the article, and let us know.
