Yeah, not too surprising how low the acceptance is in the South. A bit encouraging that it has risen over the past several years. After all, many people there have not accepted the final score of the Civil War, and I'm from there!

LOL

I remember an episode of The Golden Girls, where Blanche turned to a group of Southern women and said:  "You lost the war, get over it."

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. - Karl R. Popper

I remember well being shown around the State House in Montpelier Vermont, by an utterly charming elderly gentleman, who told us, there was only myself and my husband on the tour, that "there are many people in this country that haven't got over the Civil War yet."

It was part of the ritual of growing up in certain circles, much like instruction in the facts of life, especially if one were to be going to attend a school in the North, that the parents would have to confide to the child that the South had actually lost the War, in order to save him or her embarrassment on the part of classmates.

And slavery was never admitted as a cause of the war, but rather states' rights and the oppression of the North by means of punitive tariffs on imported goods.
