Another fascinating rock that I would have loved to take home, but it is forbidden since this is a sacred site. And I figured, the last thing I need is to be cursed by the Pueblo gods.  :o

Such a beautiful place, thanks Linda!

Way back on Easter weekend of 1971 one of my fellow students at the Defense Language Institute insisted that we go to Chaco Canyon on our way back from Mesa Verde, and I'm glad he did. It was a unique experience, and I managed to get back again in the early 2000's. Hope to return again someday.

Fajada Butte (Banded Butte). The centerpiece of the area. On the right side one can see a smooth incline that goes about halfway up. This is a man made ramp that was constructed to allow the people to get to the top. The top half has collapsed.

The magnitude of building the ramp indicates that Fajada Butte may have had considerable ceremonial importance for the Chacoan people.  There are ruins of small cliff dwellings in the higher regions of the butte. Analysis of fragments of pottery found on Fajada show that these structures were used between the 10th to 13th centuries.

In the 1980s the National Park Service closed off access to the butte due to the delicate nature of the site and the damage and erosion caused by tourism. (Excerpts from Wikipedia)

This shows the myriad of rooms contained in the structure.

Fabulous place Linda. Lucky you.  :)

I agree, Nancy.  The shot looking into 4 rooms was very interesting.

Thanks for posting them all, Linda!

Thanks, Fritz! It is such an amazing place. I hope to get back as well, as there is more than half I have not explored. It really is a several day exploration.

Fabulous place Linda. Lucky you.  :)

Thanks so much, Suely!! I am very lucky to live within 3+ hours of this wonderful, historic place. It would take less time to get there, but the 3 roads leading into the park, are about 20 miles of dirt roads that go through ranches and over many cattle guards. This is on purpose to keep the tourist numbers down. You cannot get into the area on rainy days.
