 The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras began in 1979 and I took part. It will be on again next Saturday.  The Auckland Pride Parade was on last Saturday, not sure how long it has been going. It was in the news because for the first time there was an official police contingent. They have been part of the Sydney parade for many years.
I always think of France as more tolerant than Australia. Perhaps they do not need it. The Sydney parade began as a protest against the police breakup of a demonstration the year before. It has progressed far beyond that now and is now a major carnival in the city calendar.

Sounds almost like the equivalent of the Christopher Street Day!

A great reason to make a parade exist, and now it has even become a tradition. Go Australia!

I have never seen the Christopher Street parade. In 1997 I saw parts of the San Francisco Gay Parade. I was there for a conference. However, while much longer than Sydney, it was just people marching with banners not the floats and costumes of Sydney. I was very disappointed.
