Bonsoir Lasherinas & Lasherinos, I think we all need a special thread for discussing Jean-Marc Vallée's new movie called 'Demolition' and starring our JAKE as grieving husband and widower Davis Mitchell.

I hope one of our mod friends will move this thread soon into the Jake, Heath section where it belongs.

Let's have fun, and let's share our opinions.

Ingy

And even worse is one of the readers' comments that follow it:

"Jake needs to calm down, make himself rare, take some time off, learn a trade or something... He's overexposed himself. Seeing his dour mug in the media every second week for the launch of yet another so-so project is just tiresome."

And even worse is one of the readers' comments that follow it:

Wasn't it you, Ingy, who told me not to pay too much attention to readers' comments, reviews and / or ratings, after I had complained about the horrible comments on Amazon for 'Enemy'?

So... I try not to pay too much attention these days.

For starters, this following review is pretty depressing and discouraging:

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/sep/11/demolition-review-jake-gyllenhaal-muddled-quirkfest-crashes-emptiness-tiff

Sad, all right...

remarkable emptiness
muddled narrative
insufferable cuteness

I would love to see him in a movie that his fans didn't have to search for something to like about it....that's a bad sentence, grammatically, but you know what I mean...maybe the scripts are good but get lost in direction?  idk...but he seems due for something better.

Yes, I know what you mean, Nancy. For 'Southpaw', for instance, people praised Jake's performance, but overall the script was considered "too cliché to be good". And yet, Jake still insists the 'Southpaw' script made him cry when he first read it - so there must be something in a project or a script that makes him wanting to do it - even if the finished film is considerated "disappointing" or "empty". Who knows how he makes his choices?

I have high hopes for 'Demolition' myself for some reason.

Sigh. Jake has been in a lot of movies that have a lot of things to like/love about them. You don't have to search. Nightcrawler, for instance, received nearly universal acclaim. Jake's last seven movies, with critical score and then audience score:

64   Everest   7.2
57   Southpaw   7.9
76   Nightcrawler 8.6
61   Enemy   7.1
74   Prisoners   8.5
68   End of Watch 7.8
74   Source Code  7.7

Yes, I left out Accidental Love, because it wasn't finished by the director.

It's not that hard to like or even love Jake movies. He's been in a lot of great ones that don't begin with Brokeback and end with Mountain.

I saw Demolition in Toronto and am happy to answer any questions people might have. I can't remember if I did a review here or not.

I loved it. And loved Jake in it.

Thanks for the new thread, Ing and Chuck.

(Movie scores from Metacritic. Except for Southpaw, the critic scores are all positive. All the audience scores are positive.)
Q: Your fans seem to worry that you're not happy. Are you happy?
Jake:  I would say, "Stop worrying about me and ask yourself."
