Yes, Elio is obsessed with absorbing each other mentally and physically. When they first kiss he wants them to exchange their saliva, he breathes in the scent of O's body, their sweat mingles together, the semen in each other's bodies etc - and the peach of course.

But there is the soulmate aspect as well, I think - one of the things that attracts Elio to Oliver is the fact that they can talk to each other about anything, and that their thoughts are so alike.

And thinking about it, in BBM the friendship they discover in the "pawing the white out of the moon"  evening IS a part of the attraction (though I do agree with you, Ing).

*smiles and confirms*

Soulmate and limerence are different concepts.

I know, I was just referring to both - in contrast to what I wanted to point out.

I agree that Elio and Oliver share a feeling of fusion, something that Ennis and Jack don't share.

OK.

This is a really interesting point. In CMBYN they are attracted to what reminds them of themselves in the other but in BBM they look for what complements each other.

I never heard of limerence, I am going to have to google that one in order to follow.

1. Yes, that's it!

2. I had to look it up too.

All in all it goes down to personal experiences. CMBYN resonates with me for completely different reasons than BBM. And apparently also for completely different reasons that it does with you. But I also miss that limerence feeling, oh yes!

Yes, as readers or viewers, we all respond to books and films in various ways influenced by our personal experiences.

Has limerence the same meaning as infatuation? If so, I think it would certainly apply to Elio, but I am not so sure that it applies to Oliver, well, we don't know what is in his mind.

We need the story told by Oliver too! (Instead of a sequel: the entire book/film shown in O's perspective.)

Limerence is the psychological state of deep infatuation characteristic of the early stages of falling in love. I've read that for most people, it lasts for some months or perhaps a bit longer and for some people the feeling might last a lifetime.

The term was coined by Dorothy Tennov, a psychologist in the US in the 1970s.

Psychologists have said that one of the factors contributing to high divorce rates is the fact that many people confuse limerence with love.

Highly interesting

(although the last sentence made me giggle, somehow).

Isn't it beautiful that a piece of art can awaken so many different feelings in different people?

And do I get something special for reaching my post number 666? Very simbolic given that today the WGT starts in Leipzig. You probably don't know what it is, but believe me, it's worth a google search.

You get a special Brokie hug! Or a Charmie hug, if you prefer.

Are you a WTF-Anhänger yourself? I just wondered.

It could surprise us, either positively or negatively. No, I think I’m happy to stick to 'my' Oliver.
There were only the two of them on the mountain flying in the euphoric, bitter air, looking down on the hawk's back and the crawling lights of vehicles on the plain below, suspended above ordinary affairs....
