Having TROUBLE REGISTERING or ACTIVATING your new account?
« on: December 26, 2005, 02:27:09 AM »
The process of creating a new account on Dave Cullen’s discussion forum is a bit more involved than on the old salon.com site. For most people, the process works fine and takes just a few minutes.

There’s one critical step in the process that is giving a few folks some trouble. After you fill out the registration form, the website will automatically send you an “activation” e-mail that contains a unique link. When you click on the link in this e-mail, the site will immediately activate your account so you can start participating right away.

If you don’t get the activation e-mail in just a few minutes, it probably got trapped by your junk-mail or “spam” filter. This happens most often with people using: hotmail.com, aol.com, yahoo.com, and sbcgobal.net.

  • If you don’t see the activation e-mail within a few minutes of registering, check your junk-mail folder (sometimes the name of this folder varies, but it will be similar to that). If you find the e-mail there, just follow the instructions.
  • If for any reason you cannot find the e-mail, please send a message to register@davecullen.com. We’ll activate your account as soon as possible (if I’m at the computer, it will just take a minute or two).

My apologies for any delay this process causes.

Hi, I posted first by mistake in the Rules thread...

Our home computer is shared by several family members and one of those members would like to join the forum. But when we try to create a new account for him, it just reverts back to my "user info" box at the top of the page, and the main board menu - we can't seem to get to the registration boxes. Is it possible to register two different identities from the same computer? (We also share our home email address)

Thanks for your help!

Sorry for the delay in responding. It's been a crazy week!

It's certainly possible to for more than one person to share a computer but maintain distinct logins for the forum. In many cases, all you need to do is be certain to log out at the end of each session (there's a logout button near the top of each screen below the stip of picture from the movie).

That said, I have seen some strange behavior in this situation (reverting to a previous login for no obvious reason, as you describe). It's certainly some sort of "cookie" malfunction (cookies are little files maintained by your Web browser to keep track of this sort of information). If the logout button doesn't solve the problem, just let me know. We can try some alternatives.

The shared computer problem is solveable, but the shared e-mail address is a bit trickier. Each registered users needs to have a separate e-mail address. You can always set up a free e-mail address for your loved ones (yahoo.com, hotmail.com etc.).

Hi,
I can't PM people from the site but I have received a PM. Not sure why. I recently re-registered, and the problem has been since then. I cancelled my account after the porn spam, but then rejoined when I saw that it was probably a one-time problem and you all took it seriously.

The new accounts in "Virgin" status have been restricted from sending PMs until they have a few posts and graduate to the "Getting Acquainted" classification.  Virgins can, however, still receive PMs.  Once you've graduated to the next level the links to send a PM will activate.

Hey mutt -- In order to post pictures within a post... or to link to them as an avatar, the photo must first be hosted on a webserver.  (you cannot link to a photo that is on your C: Drive)

There are free accounts for photo hosting available at places like Photobucket.  See our FAQ thread for more detailed information on posting photos.
