Annie Proulx's latest novel is called BARKSKINS – not Bearskins.
I know that the text was lifted directly from The Guardian and pasted to TDS, so not your fault.

Excellent book, by the way.

Thanks for the correction!   I hadn't noticed the error, but I've corrected TDS to reflect the correct title.

It's always curious how religious marriage officiants seek additional laws to protect their ability to reject same-sex couples in particular, when they have since time immemorial never been obliged to perform a ceremony for any group or individual, for any or no reason whatsoever. They have tried to do the same over here.

Hello!

With the holiday falling as it did, there was no TDS this week.  It should be back next week!

Today's article about Ang Lee (‘Brokeback Mountain’) being voted top Best Director Oscar winner of the 2000's is very heartening.
I think that BBM's loss in the Best Picture category had a lot to do with that. People who still feel strongly about it had a reason to
put his name on that list over, say, fanboys who feel Scorcese can do no wrong. (By the way, Ang Lee has more Oscars than Martin
Scorcese. FYI!)

Now I have to record this info in the Awards Aftermath thread, heh!

Today's column about LGBT Movies begins with this observation about LGBT films:

However, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of these releases either take place in an utterly depressing setting or conclude on a tragic note.

Then almost at the end of the article is this:

An example of positive LGBT storytelling is the BAFTA-nominated film God’s Own Country, which depicts the story of a gay relationship without pandering to negative themes.

I love that film...I liked it even more than Call Me by Your Name, but...it does take place in a depressing setting, I have to say, so probably not the best example.

What the article fails to do is to provide (m)any examples of what would be considered a happy film in comfortable settings, I guess.  I think PRIDE is an example of a great positive film in a setting far from depressing. However, another person could look at the film and say, "yeah, but a couple characters are painfully closeted, there's gay bashing, the AIDS crisis is dealt with, discriminatory attitudes are prevalent.  So when you write an article like this you need to be more explanatory with the theme of it, it my opinion.

I was going to mention "God's Own Country", as hopeful but that beat me to it. As for being a depressing setting, well it is starkly beautiful and possibly culturally an unlikely place for love to thrive. But that makes it all the more joyful when it does. Light and shade.

Re: The Rain Pryor comments about Quincy Jones's remarks...

On the one hand, I suppose none of us want to really think about our parents sex lives
and to have it in the news would be problematic for most people. Why Rain decided to lash
out the way she did might be worth a look into. I don't know her at all, but Quincy Jones
has always been thought of in the best of lights, from what I know about him.

Another thought, isn't it always the case that if someone makes a remark like this that
someone will always say it's unfair because the person in question isn't around to defend
themselves.  As though it would be perfectly fine to make accusations while they still are
around. And, if they were, they would deny it?

I remember a great deal of talk about Marlon Brando hooking up with Wally Cox. Anyone
recall that?

All I can say is good for Wally Cox and Richard Pryor!

I am quite sure there are a whole lot of things we don't know. People are still trying to figure out
what happened with Natalie Wood. No one wants to accept the simple explanation...that she lost
her footing, fell into the water and drowned becasue no one noticed. No, it was too tragic, so the
reason must be something else. It must be sinister. It must be a conspiracy, it must be something
other than simple, other than mundane, other than an accident.

Swiped the Adobe Acrobat Reader!

And the Kansas GOP does not have a corner on such legislation.

That Kansas GOP statement doesn't make sense to me:

The Kansas Republican Party has voted to "oppose all efforts to validate transgender identity," but said
"it recognizes the dignity of those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender."

How can you recognize the dignity of something you don't believe in?

Maybe they didn't mean to include transgender in recognizing dignity.
Besides, bigots never said they have to make sense.

It's so deeply satisfying to see the Irish prime minister marching with his boyfriend and with other state and city political officials. Apparently even Cardinal Dolan didn't raise a stink, a bit surprising. It was not that long ago that parade officials refused to let any gay people identifying themselves as such march in an organized manner. Thank goodness that the old leadership finally gave up and quit, and that new leadership has been far more accommodating.
