Any thoughts on Ang Lee's win of the Oscar last night?

I don't think he would've won if Ben Affleck had been included, every other director's award went to him this year, if I'm remembering correctly.

Life of Pi ended up getting quite a few awards, which surprised me.  As the Oscar season went on, there were other films that got more attention than LoP.

It is extremely rare for this to happen:

Best Picture: Argo
Best Actor: Lincoln
Best Actress: Silver Linings Playbook
Best Supporting Actor: Django Unchained
Best Supporting Actress: Les Miserables
Best Director: Life of Pi

...that all six of the top awards go to different films.
Rare because at the very least, picture and director
are usually from the same film. The last time it
happened was 7 years ago:

Crash-Best Picture
Capote-Best Actor
Walk the Line-Best Actress
Syriana-Best Supporting Actor
The Constant Gardner-Best Supporting Actress
Brokeback Mountain-Best Director

But the time before that was 1956!

Around the World in 80 Days-Best Picture
The King and I-Best Actor
Anastasia-Best Actress
Lust for Life-Best Supporting Actor
Written on the Wind-Best Supporting Actress
Giant-Best Director

And two of these times Ang Lee was involved.
And two of these times the Best Picture winner was an upset.

In fact, these are the only three times that this ever has happened!

Some more Ang Lee trivia:

--This is the first time a director has won for directing a 3-D film.

--Ang Lee is the only director to have more than one academy award for directing
without any of them also winning Best Picture.

Life of Pi ended up getting quite a few awards, which surprised me.  As the Oscar season went on, there were other films that got more attention than LoP.

I actually thought it might get a couple more technical awards, it was nominated for a whopping
eleven of them.  Sort of like Hugo did last year.  You might be right that Ben Affleck would have won
if he were nominated, but also, back when the nominations came out, Lincoln seemed like a pretty sure
bet, but when Affleck was not nominated Argo became a film to rally around because of that, so maybe
it would have played out differently.  We can't know. Or maybe it played out as it was meant to? Or?

Anyway, the final awards tally was:

Life of Pi - 4

Argo - 3
Les MisÚrables - 3

Django Unchained - 2
Lincoln - 2
Skyfall - 2

Amour - 1
Anna Karenina - 1
Brave - 1
Silver Linings Playbook - 1
Zero Dark Thirty - 1

Plus--Documentaries and shorts-winners:
Curfew
Inocente
Paperman
Searching for Sugar Man

I believe Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon also won 4 awards.

Last night, Jake presented Ang Lee (!) with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award (for Excellence in Directing) at the British Academy Britannia Awards in Los Angeles.
