There may be a difference but the one I'm talking about has 35 tracks... a different kettle of fish.

I continue in my quest to send a fan letter to Thomas Newman, composer of the Shawkshank score including the beautiful piece used at the end of the BBM trailer and at Buzz Images.  I listen to it several times a day.  I also bought the Shawshank CD.  The piece is the last track on the CD and is slightly different from what's on Buzz Images's site.  The Buzz Images version is prettier.

From the web I sent an e-mail to ASCAP asking for help.  No answer.  So I called the 800 number for membership services and the lady was very helpful.  The problem was Newman is an member of BMI, not ASCAP.

So, onward to BMI.  I sent another e-mail, though this one went from my own e-mail to theirs earlier this week.  No answer yet.

After a couple of e-mails to BMI, I called them.  They suggested I contact Newman's publisher, and gave me a name and number in Los Angeles.  I called them and was advised they didn't handle fan mail.  Fuck it.  I've done enough.

Shane, I'm not sure why you are having difficulty finding material. The commercially available CD will provide you with most of the songs used, both specially written for the film and previously available, plus the film credits (and the BBM: Story To Screenplay book) lists other material, some of which is not available anywhere as far as I know. Anything labeled Mastersource falls into this category. Googling Mastersource will explain.

Put all that together with what you already have (which is all the music, as opposed to songs, composed for the film, and which I see is listed alphabetically rather than as it occurs)  and you end up with as complete a soundtrack list as you are likely to get.

Shane, the list you cite above may have just a couple of errors. Once you have the full soundtrack, you can check it out for yourself. Do you have the said s/t?  :)

Ok

My opinion is that the GSO album sucks.

Here's a review from Amazon that says exactly what I think:

Quote
As the title of this review implies. The music of the soundtrack, sounds as if it's being performed a quarter or a half step out of phase.
It sounds terrible! I thought that this would be an orchestral version of
Santollala's wonderful film score.
And the bonus tracks are taken from live recording, rather than studio tracks. A bad buy. Skip this one!

This album is not based on the soundtrack, but it's worth a listen.

Quote
The poetic lyrics and poignant melodies on Shawn Kirchner’s new CD, Meet Me on the Mountain, captured my heart the first time I heard them. The songs are a mix of foot-stompin’ bluegrass, polished country, and soulful folk, inspired by the film, Brokeback Mountain.

Annie Proulx’s short story by the same name first appeared in The New Yorker in 1997. Later, it was adapted into an Oscar-winning screenplay by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry, triggering heartfelt responses from around the world.

Kirchner’s songs offer an added dimension of emotional depth to the scenes and characters that inspired them. Yet the songs also stand solidly on their own, as Kirchner has carefully crafted both music and lyrics to be independent of the famous story.

Anyone who has ever loved someone who was outside the confines of socially acceptable partners is bound to be particularly touched by this music.
