Brokeback Opera Comes to New York

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4639/39085598082_be70dab8d1.jpg)Years ago, Brokies congregated in Spain to see the opera version of Brokeback Mountain.  The image to the left features the stars of that production, Tom Randle and Daniel Okulitch.  It was wondered if the opera would go on the road, and appear in the United States.  It was later confirmed that NYC would see the opera,  but the date was not determined.

The libretto for Brokeback Mountain was written by Annie Proulx herself, following a period of persuasion to take on a medium she had never attempted. The wisdom of such a collaboration was borne out by the results: in language distilled to that which can be sung onstage, the story’s details and themes remain intact, but the method of its telling required significant changes.

SCHEDULE -  May 31 7:30PM,  June 2 2:00PM,  June 3 4:00PM,  June 4 7:30PM,
LOCATION - Jazz At Lincoln Center's Rose Theater - 10 Columbus Circle, NY, NY 10019

Brokeback Mountain Play Coming Soon

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4690/39378238512_246be2a068.jpg)The London stage production of Brokeback Mountain is officially underway. The show, which was first announced in 2015, is based on the short story of the same name, which was later adapted into a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

We all know the story by now. In 1963, two young men, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, are hired for the summer to look after sheep at a remote grazing range on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. Unexpectedly, alone in the wilderness, they form an intense emotional and physical bond that will change their lives forever. And over the next twenty years, as their separate lives play out through marriages, children and dead-end jobs, they long to be together, back on Brokeback Mountain, in a place where there are no secrets, only each other.

The show's official Twitter account posted an image of the script, revealing that production is underway.

Gay Sign Hung Outside Mike Pence's Home

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4736/24542626377_f375d938b8.jpg)Mike Pence's Colorado neighbours made sure to give the US Vice President a warm welcome at his holiday home in Aspen this week after hanging a 'Make American Gay Again' sign outside his home.  Some local residents made their stance on equality clear as they hung a rainbow flag bearing the slogan outside the house where the notoriously anti-gay evangenlical politician has been staying with his wife ovr the holidays.

"You couldn't miss it", Pitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Buglione told The Aspen Times of the flag, which was draped over the stone pillars outside the gateway to Pence's house.

Buglione added that one of his deputies had been present when a man staying in one of the neighbouring homes came to the end of the driveway to put the flag up.

"He was real sheepish and thought he might be confronted by the Secret Service or deputies who'd tell him he couldn't do it," DiSalvo said.

Lesbian Couple Wins Case Against Bakers

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4689/38700542844_4cd7d72484.jpg)After an Oregon bakery made the public choice to refuse service to a same-sex couple, a judge’s decision has ruled against the Christian bakers. Consider this a win for the LGBTQA+ community!

The case was between lesbian couple Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman, and Sweet Cakes by Melissa owners Aaron and Melissa Klein, who told the couple they would not accept their request to bake their wedding cake because they are “abominations.” The court’s ruling will uphold the fine against the bakery for blatant discrimination.

In 2013, when the bakery refused service to the couple, Cryer and Bowman filed a complaint against the business because discrimination of sexual orientation is, and was at the time, banned in Oregon. Their complaint won in Oregon courts, and the Kleins were ordered to pay $135,000 in damages. The Kleins appealed and argued that their free speech was being violated.

Transgender America: 10 Best and Worst Moments of 2017

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4590/38700989924_f587899c38.jpg)Three years ago, the outlook for transgender people in America was optimistic: Time Magazine announced the "Transgender Tipping Point" in May of 2014, as pop culture milestones and minor legal victories were falling into place at a pace that suggested more substantial victories would not be far behind.

But by 2015, the anti-transgender backlash had already begun – and today, the optimism of 2014 seems like a distant dream. The anti-LGBT groups who first put transgender people in the state-level crosshairs now hold sway in the White House, and they have been using their power to make life hell for a community that was already living in legal purgatory. But even these dire circumstances, transgender people have made genuine gains, both cultural and political. The Trump administration's actions may have delayed full equality, but the progress made in 2017 proves that it won't be out of reach for long .

Here are the five best and worst moments of a year that saw the transgender community persisting under unprecedented political pressure.

Hong Kong's Gender Queer Bodybuilder

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4732/24543521317_19192e0e67.jpg)Gender queer bodybuilder Siu-fung Law was part of Hong Kong’s successful bid team to win the 2022 Gay Games.  Hong Kong will become the first Asian city to host the world’s biggest international sporting and cultural event featuring athletes and artists with different sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, in what is hoped will be a catalyst for LGBTI rights across Asia.

Siu-fung was born female and is socially male. He hasn’t had sex reassignment surgery and competes in the female bodybuilding category.  He tells of his experience as a transgender athlete, the struggle for transgender equality in Hong Kong and his hopes for the Gay Games.

‘Bodybuilding is a paradoxical sport when it comes to gender. It creates the biggest muscular women but at the same time regulates what femininity is,’ he said.

LGBT ‘Ally’ Training: Don’t Assume

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4725/38700382244_732070bda1.jpg)Kent State University’s instructions for aspiring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender “allies” instructs trainees to avoid assuming that men and women in committed heterosexual relationships are actually heterosexual.

“Do not assume the sexual orientation of another person even when that person is married or in a committed relationship,” the instructions read. “Many bisexuals, and even some gay men and lesbians, are in heterosexual relationships.”

It is unclear if the advice applies to those who are in homosexual relationships as well, i.e., if “allies” should also not presume that two men in a sexual relationship are gay.

Among the other tidbits of advice given to those who wish to be allies: “Use the words gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer instead of homosexual. The overwhelming majority of LGBTQ people do not identify with or use the word homosexual to describe themselves.”

Heath Ledger to be honoured at G‘Day USA Gala

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4596/25678385618_941a0515cd.jpg)Late Australian acting legend Heath Ledger to be honoured at G‘Day USA Gala in Los Angeles… 10 years after the star‘s untimely death

In January it will be 10 years since acting legend Heath Ledger died.  And the former Australian star will be honoured next month in Los Angeles at the prestigious G‘Day USA Gala.  According to, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop made the announcement at the official launch for the gala in Sydney on Friday.

Heath was just 28 when he passed away from an accidental overdose in 2008 leaving behind a then two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

Heath began his acting career in the early 90s in TV roles and soon became a household name thanks to starring in 10 Things I Hate About You.  He went on to appear in 19 films, including Candy, Brokeback Mountain and A Knight‘s Tale.  One of his iconic last movies was The Dark Knight, where he played The Joker.

India's Gay Prince Opens His Palace to LGBT People

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4725/39536293032_c5de0ddbe8.jpg)A gay Indian prince has opened up his 15-acre palace grounds to vulnerable LGBT people and is said to be constructing more buildings to house visitors.  Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, who is the son and probable heir of the Maharaja of Rajpipla in Gujarat in western India, will run the centre with his organisation The Lakshya Trust.

The royal, who was ostracised by his family after coming out publically in 2006, started the community based organisation to support gay men and educate people about the prevention of HIV/Aids.

Homosexuality remains a big taboo in Indian society and sex between people of the same gender is punishable by law in the country.  The controversial Section 377 of the country’s penal code bans sexual activity that is “against the order of nature” and many have interpreted the wording to include gay sex.

Lesbian Brutally Murdered

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4597/39565839781_7aae3dd02d.jpg)Kerrice Lewis, 23, was shot and locked in the boot of a car before it was set on fire, police have said. On 28 December, police responded to reports of gunfire on Adrian Street and at around 7.30pm found a vehicle on fire.

After the fire was extinguished, officers found the woman with gunshot wounds, unconscious.  Once emergency services arrived they found “no signs consistent with life.”  According to neighbours, multiple gunshots were heard before the fire was seen.

Lewis was heard screaming as she tried to escape from the car boot, according to reports.   The victim was orphaned when she was 11 and was raised by her grandparents.  Speaking to Huffington Post, her grandfather William Sharp said “her mother died of a brain aneurysm and her father was tragically murdered up in the D.C. area.”

Would Marvel Not Allow Gambit to be Bisexual?

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4679/25695846098_8b2b160b8d.jpg)In 2012, Marvel Comics released their character's (Gambit) most recent ongoing series launched by writer James Asmus and artist Clay Mann (working with inker Seth Mann and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg).   In that series, Asmus tried to reveal that Gambit was a bisexual male.

Rich Johnston asked Asmus about this back in 2015 and he got the answer straight from the horse’s mouth:

"It’s true that I was interested in revealing Gambit to be bisexual in our series – with us first seeing him seduce a man on one of his missions, and soon thereafter meeting a member of the thieves guild Gambit previously had a more significant relationship with in his pre-X-Men debut. I never got past pitching the first part, though, as word came down we wouldn’t be redefining the character as such.

A few important disclaimers, though… first, I have no idea how high or low on the totem pole that decision was made, or for what reasons – but my editor on the book was the fabulous Daniel Ketcham who is an out man and prominent voice for LBGT diversity in comics."

Transgender Woman Says Jail Awaits In Uzbekistan

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4739/27789984799_98eddc3ecf.jpg)Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Uzbekistan face deep-rooted homophobia, discrimination, and the threat of violence, activists and human rights defenders say.

And so it was for K., as she identifies herself for security reasons, a transgender woman who says she indeed faced death threats back home in Uzbekistan.  She was detained in Tashkent by Uzbek police and security forces four times between 2014 and 2017.  Each time, they demanded that K. out other members of the LGBT community, and when she refused she was brutally beaten.

"I was beaten badly. After five or six days [of such abuse] you just lie there," the 26-year-old K. tells RFE/RL's Belarus Service in an interview from Minsk.

Male, female or X

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/25696172818_d21dfbfcc1.jpg)Washington state residents who don’t identify as male or female will soon be able to choose X as their gender on birth certificates.  Starting January 27, they will be able to identify as male, female or X on birth certificates. The policy lets Washingtonians change existing documents; it does not apply to new ones.

The rule, announced Thursday by the state Department of Health, defines X as the following:

A gender that is not exclusively male or female, including, but not limited to, intersex, agender, amalgagender, androgynous, bigender, demigender, female-to-male, genderfluid, genderqueer, male-to-female, neutrois, nonbinary, pangender, third sex, transgender, transsexual, Two Spirit, and unspecified.

For adults seeking to change their birth certificate from male to female or vice versa, the rule removes an existing requirement of a doctor’s letter. Minors who want to change their designation must have written consent of their parent or legal guardian and documentation from a licensed health care professional.

Ang Lee Voted Top Best Director Oscar Winner of the 2000s

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4312/35559687720_0a8ba241ec.jpg)Ang Lee has pulled off a stunning victory to become your favorite Best Director winner of the 2000s for his work on “Brokeback Mountain” (2005). Since “Crash” ended up taking Best Picture, that made Lee one of only a few directors who won Best Director without their films winning in the 2000s. Lee overcame huge odds to win our poll, proving that the love for “Brokeback” continues over a decade later. (See 2018 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)

Lee earned 23% of the vote in Gold Derby’s poll asking you to select your favorite Best Director of the 2000s, a razor-thin victory over Martin Scorsese (“The Departed”) at 21%. Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”) was third at 17%, while Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) was next at 14%. Joel and Ethan Coen (“No Country for Old Men”) rounded out the top five with 12% of the vote.

Michelle Williams - Pay Gap and Donation Made

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4445/37012534324_f9466580f6.jpg)All the money Mark Wahlberg earned from the All The Money In The World reshoots is going to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams' name after days of public scrutiny.

To recap: After actor Anthony Rapp publicly accused Kevin Spacey of making sexual advances toward him when Rapp was just fourteen, All The Money In The World director Ridley Scott decided to replace Spacey with Christopher Plummer, requiring reshoots with the main cast. Wahlberg's reps negotiated a $1,500,000 pay day in exchange for approval of the recast, while Williams basically volunteered to forgo her quote because she believed in the rightness of Scott's decision, and earned somewhere around $80 per day. (Spacey has since been accused of sexual misconduct by many other people.)

Both Wahlberg and Williams are represented by WME, and after the story of their wage discrepancy broke, Wahlberg announced yesterday that he would donate the entirety of his reshoot money to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams's name, saying in a posted statement that he "100% supports the fight for fair pay." WME pledged an additional half million to the fund.

Why Gus Kenworthy Doesn’t Mind If You Call Him The ‘Gay Skier’

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4652/25834774558_942c4f7aed.jpg)Gus Kenworthy was terrified about the consequences of coming out as gay in 2015 but the American skier says that his decision prompted a huge outpouring of unexpected support and has allowed him to compete without the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Kenworthy, an Olympic silver medal winner in the ski slopestyle at Sochi, came out in a cover story for ESPN The Magazine to become the first openly gay action sports athlete.

“I had set myself up for the worst case scenario,” he told Reuters by telephone from his winter base in Colorado. “I thought I was going to be turned against and become this pariah.”

Kenworthy had already told his close family and friends, who were all very supportive. Their support, along with a desire to be an inspiration for other young men and women scared to come out as homosexual, drove Kenworthy to make the decision.

The Air Force Expelled Her For Being a Lesbian

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4626/38809039495_69bdd9fd69.jpg)The barracks were thick with anxious whispers and rumors, but she figured there was nothing incriminating about leaving the air base for a sandwich.

On a Friday night in 1955, Airman Second Class Helen Grace James and another female service member left the field after work for dinner in a nearby town. The place was too crowded to sit down, so after getting food the two drove the wooded area south of where Hempstead Harbor stabs into Long Island. They found a quiet spot to eat. James cut the engine. She was reaching for her sandwich when flashlight beams ignited the car interior. Air Police. From the base. They had been followed.

“They asked us what we were doing,” James recently told The Washington Post.

Within a few days, James was arrested and put through hours of humiliating interrogation. The questions were so harsh and disgusting James had to run to the latrine because she felt sick. Finally, after an interrogator threatened to go to her family, James relented. She said she would sign whatever they wanted.

The Media Doesn’t Know How to Talk About Bisexuality

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4209/35017761733_5197876e88.jpg)In the United States, bisexual people comprise over half of the LGBT community, according to estimates from the Williams Institute. Gallup data shows that bisexual people, especially bisexual women, are coming out in droves.

But even a cursory glance can tell you that bisexual people aren’t getting anywhere close to half of the mainstream media coverage.

In 2017, The New York Times tweeted the word “bisexual” seven times and the word “gay” well over a hundred times. And a Google search on The New York Times domain found only a few instances of the words “bi” or “bisexual” in headlines from last year, not counting the acronym LGBT: an article about a fan petition asking for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman to be bisexual in the sequel, a self-help article about coming out, and a fashion slideshow.

The other two papers with the highest circulation, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, didn’t fare much better on these simple benchmarks.

How Ireland Transformed Transgender Rights

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4710/38811851535_800862f598.jpg)Toryn Glavin was 17 when she began to live the life that she wanted to, as a woman. The transgender teenager, still feeling her way in a public female identity, found it easier not to engage with the cumbersome bureaucracy involved in legally changing her documents.

But this had practical consequences. The Dublin-based office administrator and activist explains: “I was once stopped at the airport for two hours because they weren’t convinced that I was who I said I was. I didn’t apply for any internships at the end of college because I was so worried about not having the right documents.”

Two years later, in 2015, transgender rights in Ireland evolved dramatically when the country became one of four legal jurisdictions in the world where people may legally change gender by statutory self-declaration. The gender recognition bill was passed months after the people of Ireland backed same-sex marriage by a landslide vote in a referendum that marked another significant social shift in a country that had decriminalised homosexuality only two decades before.

Gender Queer Poet Makes Inroads

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4770/39680261232_20963a2395.jpg)Award-winning poet Andrea Gibson is coming to town and bringing some of their best work. This genderqueer artist identifies with the pronouns they and has worked in many activist groups. In 2013, they launched a website called "Stay Here with Me" to provide support for those struggling with suicide.  Their new album, Hey Galaxy, drops Friday, Jan. 12, and is Gibson's seventh record. It covers everything from a valentine's track to the Matthew Shepard tragedy.

Ledger Lives On

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4450/37543791936_53a9eb341d.jpg)On January 22, 2008, a masseuse and housekeeper quietly entered a bedroom in Heath Ledger's Manhattan apartment hoping to wake up the Australian actor.  It was the early afternoon and Ledger, who had been battling chronic insomnia, pneumonia and exhaustion, was in bed and could not be roused.  They realized he was not breathing.

NYPD and paramedics were called, but Ledger, the father of then two-year-old daughter Matilda, could not be saved.

At the age of 28 the effervescent, bright light that was Ledger died from what the New York Medical Examiner concluded was an accidental overdose from a powerful mix of prescription drugs, including narcotic painkillers, anti-anxiety pills and sleep medication.

On the 10th anniversary of Ledger's death the Perth-born actor's legacy continues.  His heartbroken family has helped set up Scriptwise, a non-profit foundation in Australia designed to educate the public about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs.

Adam Rippon Stands Up to Mike Pence’s Homophobia

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4626/39807426881_845ce26fa3.jpg)The Olympics has long been a site of not only sports, pageantry, and flag-waving nationalism but also dissent. While most people associate that with the 1968 Games where John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists, this tradition goes back for as long as there has been an Olympics.

In 2018, a chapter has already been added to this history, and it could not have happened soon enough. For the first time, the United States Winter Olympics team has two open LGBT athletes: figure skater Adam Rippon and freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy. For the first time as well, the Olympic delegation is being led by Vice President Mike Pence, a virulent homophobe, who (as Donald Trump likes to joke) “wants to hang” LGBT people.

In addition, these Winter Olympics come on the heels of a dictate by this administration that medical professionals do not have to provide services to trans people. They believe that if you state a religious objection, you can leave a trans person in a life-threatening situation to die. Well, Adam Rippon was not going to partake in this quietly.

The Classiest Lesbian Axe Murderer Movie Ever

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4768/38909011125_6e247f92d4.jpg)Lizzie Borden’s (alleged) crime of murdering her parents with an axe was so horrific that we still know about it over a hundred years later. Director Craig William Macneill brings this story to the big screen with Lizzie, but in his attempt to studiously avoid sensationalism, he runs into the opposite problem where his movie comes off as cold and remote. The movie occasionally flirts with interesting ideas regarding the power of women in society, but it never goes far enough to leave a lasting impression. Despite great performances from leads Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, Lizzie ultimately gets stuck between trying to be a mature examination of a horrific crime and being as titillated by the murders as the rest of us.

On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abbie Borden were found hacked to death by an axe. The prime suspect was their daughter Lizzie (Sevigny). The movie then cuts back six months to the arrival of Bridget Sullivan (Stewart) at the Bordens’ home to work as their maid. The willful Lizzie and the timid Bridget immediately hit it off with Lizzie teaching Bridget how to read. However, both face hardship inside the household from Andrew, who sexually assaults Bridget in her room at night and verbally and physically abuses the rebellious Lizzie. Lizzie is also concerned that her scheming Uncle John (Denis O’Hare) plans to steal her inheritance.

Grown-ish Called Out Bisexuality Misconceptions

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4656/39807427061_e123f5768f.jpg)Misconceptions about bisexuality are honestly everywhere. Whether it's the idea that bisexuality is just a phase or that bisexual people are "greedy," it's pretty hard to escape the wrongful understandings of what bisexuality really is. Just like a lot of other realities of life, Grown-ish is tackling these misconceptions head on.

In the most recent episode of the show, Nomi (played by Emily Arlook) goes out on a date with a girl. While the pair is together, a man offering to buy them a drink sets off a debate about both the exploitative tropes bisexual people and lesbians often face from heterosexual men, and the discrimination bisexual people can face from within the LGBTQ community.

After the guy tries to buy Nomi and her date a drink, her date calls him out for sexualizing them just because they're two women on a date together. When Nomi questions whether her date "came in a little hot," her date learns that Nomi identifies as bisexual.

Protesters Want Better Healthcare for Transgender People

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4697/39807427001_85f4618a9a.jpg)Over 200 people, many belonging to the transgender community in Ireland, marched towards Leinster House this afternoon calling for better healthcare services for people who are seeking gender reassignment treatment.  Organisers, who are not aligned with any organisation or political party, said that current services are "unacceptable" and are falling behind other countries in the developed world.

They are calling on the HSE to engage with a model of "informed consent".  At present, anyone seeking gender reassignment treatment must receive a medical diagnosis. However, many transgender people want to see an end to this practice.

They are also calling for treatment to be handled by general practitioners.

Sex Ed(itorial): Unpacking Asexuality

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4695/39097767244_d7c7833c7f.jpg)In a society obsessed with sex and saturated with images of idealized sexual and romantic relationship, asexuals have had to fight to carve out a space that acknowledges their sexual orientation as legitimate and allows them a space to be themselves.

Born into a traditional Lebanese family, Sami grew up just outside of Montreal.  “I had a very normal childhood, I liked school and spent free time riding my bike and playing video games,” he said.

Friendly and outgoing, he did well throughout his studies and now works for the federal government. His last name has been withheld to protect his identity.  But tradition presented an issue. Sami said that for hundreds of years, Middle Eastern traditions have honoured a joint family system. Although the model has shifted from several generations under one roof to something more closely resembling a nuclear family, it still means that one typically goes from their parents’ home to living with a spouse.

The 15 Coolest Straight Allies of 2017

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4498/37204906900_7be4eb9f59.jpg)Most LGBT people (ok, all people) will be glad to see 2017 in the rearview mirror.  As "president" (it still doesn't feel right calling him that) Trump was even worse than we anticipated, singling out LGBT people, and especially trans people, for discrimination.

In times like these, it's good to have friends - and the best of them raged against the injustices being hurled our way and those that singled out women, immigrants, refugees, and People of Color.  Instead of sticking their heads down, these straight allies loudly resisted.   Thank you!

Video of Heath Ledger's Response

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4629/39903912412_e9864f25eb.jpg)Video has surfaced on social media of Heath Ledger responding to people who called Brokeback Mountain's gay romance “disgusting.”

Ledger's performance as rancher Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's 2005 gay drama Brokeback Mountain won him legions of fans and numerous awards, including an Oscar best actor nomination.

Brokeback Mountain, based on a short story of the same name by Annie Proulx, won three Academy Awards, though it lost the Best Picture award to Crash. The film, which spans 20 years, stars Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as star-crossed lovers in the American West.

“I think it's a real shame – I think it's immature for one,” Ledger answered when asked to respond to people who called the film's relationship “disgusting.” “I think it's an incredible shame that people go out of their way to voice their disgust or negative opinions about the way two people wish to love one another.”

Gay Man, Straight-Married, Ends in Divorce

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4663/39039016435_e2303455bd.jpg)Josh Weed, who made headlines in 2012 for coming out as a gay Mormon man in a straight marriage, announced Thursday that he and his wife, Lolly, are getting divorced.

The Seattle-based couple, who have been married for 10 years and have four daughters, first opened up about their relationship in a now-deleted blog post. It quickly became a major national story, with coverage by ABC News, Gawker, and many more sites.

At the time, Josh Weed claimed the two had a happy marriage and an "extremely healthy and robust sex life," despite both knowing he has been "same-sex attracted" for the entirety of their relationship.

The couple's 2012 story angered many people in the LGBT community due to what many saw as internalized homophobia and an agenda to push gay Mormons further into the closet. Some people accused Josh, who works as a marriage and family counselor, of practicing conversion therapy, although he denied this.

Lesbian Firefighter Prevails in Court

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4656/39039016655_7e8b6ea0fd.jpg)A federal appeals court has upheld a “sex-plus” discrimination ruling in the case of a lesbian firefighter who said she suffered horrendous harassment on the job.

A jury in 2016 found that the Providence, R.I., Fire Department had discriminated against Franchina because of her gender and sexual orientation and that the city failed to address the problem, and awarded her a six-figure sum. In a Thursday ruling affirming the decision, Judge Ojetta Rogeriee Thompson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, writing for a three-judge panel of the court, detailed the treatment Franchina endured.

In its appeal, the city objected to several things about the 2016 ruling. It said, for one, that Franchina did not present sufficient evidence to prove not only sex discrimination, but sexual orientation discrimination as well — the “sex-plus” ruling.

Indian Actor Says 'Bisexuality Angle' Contributed to His Character's 'Menace'

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4670/26064926978_2c2b9fc3c1.jpg)Ranveer Singh has spoken in an interview about playing a bisexual character in Bollywood film.  Singh played Alauddin Khalji in recent film Padmavati.  It’s production budget of $30 million (€24 million), it is one of the most expensive Hindi films ever made.

The film was initially scheduled for release on 1 December 2017.  It was rescheduled however to 25 January 2018.

Singh told Pinkvilla that taking on the character of Khalji was ‘a very difficult decision’ because the character was ‘so negative.’  When he read the part he felt like he had to ‘tap into deep dark places inside me and I wasn’t all prepared to go into that zone.’

Singh eventually agreed to play the character as the Director Bhansali has helped him with his career in the past.  He added: ‘I couldn’t say no to him. I am glad that he put his faith in me and I was able to deliver for him.’

Trump's Transgender Military Ban Is Being Legally Challenged

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4746/39039016535_9d6b5059aa.jpg)A new legal challenge could finally stop President Donald Trump from banning transgender troops in the military for good.

Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN this week asked a federal district court to permanently block the Trump administration’s plan to stop transgender people from openly serving in the U.S. armed services. The motion for summary judgment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington seeks a speedy resolution of the case.

“Every single federal court to look at President Trump’s policy has already found that it reeks of undisguised and unlawful discrimination against qualified transgender people willing and able to serve our country, and it’s time to put the nail in the coffin for that policy,” Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Peter Renn told Pink News.

Intersex Babies Killed at Birth

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4762/39039016485_e2303455bd.jpg)There was nervous excitement in the air — Amogelang’s* sister was about to give birth.  Amogelang, a traditional healer who was also training to become a professional nurse, gladly volunteered to assist with her younger sister’s delivery in the family’s tiny home in rural North West province.

“We were hoping for a boy because we wanted to name him after our grandfather. But we experienced something we didn’t know how to say it. The baby was healthy and was crying like any baby but we were not sure what was happening between the legs of this child,” Amogelang says.

Because her mother and grandmother — both present at the birth — were “disappointed in the child” and its ambiguous genitalia, the three “agreed to kill the child and be silent [about it]”.  A quick, merciless twist of its neck later and the newborn, the “bad omen”, was gone.  “We buried it and told my sister that the child was stillborn. She didn’t argue it because we just told her not to ask too many questions.”

Armada's Sutherland Helps Give Voice to the Voiceless

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4711/39039016785_b55b7539b5.jpg)Victoria Sutherland wants her legacy during her four years at Armada High School to be one of kindness and acceptance.

If her first three years were the general narrative, her senior year will be the exclamation point. This past summer, inspired by stories of discrimination endured by her uncle and two friends who were fearful over coming out regarding their sexual identity, Sutherland began giving serious thoughts to forming a gay-straight alliance group at her high school.

Armada High School, in rural, conservative northern Macomb County had never had such a group. Would such an idea even get approval? She started out by contacting a friend at Sterling Heights High School, which had a similar club, and talked to its teacher sponsor. She talked to Armada National Honor Society advisors, and they agreed to help out. The school principal approved the idea, and the Armada High School Gay Straight-Alliance was born.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4382/36035669230_f7745a88f9.jpg)Over the past couple of years, there has been an increase of LGBT stories in film making, including the recently released Call Me By Your Name and Oscar-winning Moonlight, which famously won Best Picture at last year’s Academy Awards after an envelope mix up. However, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of these releases either take place in an utterly depressing setting or conclude on a tragic note.

This trend in LGBT film making is so abundantly clear that it is worth asking exactly why LGBT movies always have a sad ending – because while it’s important to tell the stories of LGBT people and relationships in movies, it’s also important to tell all parts of those stories instead of focusing on just the negative aspects. One reason for the many sad or negative stories seen in LGBT cinema could be due to the stereotypes about LGBT people, which are driven by a society that accommodates many who disapprove of LGBT people.

The discriminatory views of LGBT people is of course nothing new. However, its impact on film making is something that has largely not been considered.

Costa Rica Votes for New President Amid Gay Rights Controversy

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4608/40052771442_f18d52a355.jpg)Costa Ricans went to the polls on Sunday to choose a new president in a race upended by a debate over same-sex marriage, as leading candidates in the crowded field fiercely opposed gay rights that have recently gained ground in Latin America.

Conservative Christian singer and TV anchor Fabricio Alvarado skyrocketed to the top of the 13-person field after denouncing a January ruling by the region’s top human rights court that called on Costa Rica to give equal civil marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples.

If no candidate wins at least 40 percent of Sunday’s vote, a run-off election with the top two finishers is set for early April. Initial results are expected by 8 p.m. local time (2100 ET/0200 GMT Monday).

Let's End Flannel as a Lesbian Signifier

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4762/39374311714_387ab26a3b.jpg)Earlier this year, I received this text message: “My friend is on set for a commercial where she plays another woman’s wife. This is the shot she sent me.” The picture attached was of two women, one with loose curls spilling down a basic tee shirt, the other wearing a business casual shag and a flannel shirt. A lesbian couple. Get it?

The wardrobe choice certainly could have been a coincidence, but it’s far more likely it was meant as a strategic wink, one that does the heavy suggestive lifting for a primetime American audience. Above all, I felt it was a haphazard stab at “inclusivity” meant to make the brand look good. But whatever the creative team’s intent, it ended up perpetuating a tired lesbian stereotype—the queer woman in flannel—that I can barely believe has survived all the way to 2018.

According to noted queer author and Slate editor June Thomas, the association between lesbians and flannel likely began at the advent of women’s trousers. Because jeans were once the only acceptable trousers women could wear in public, and lesbians spearheaded the trend, the flannel-and-denim look was a natural fit given how well they coordinate. And besides, there are more important reasons. Flannel is “practical, it’s warm, it’s cheerful, it’s comfortable—like lesbians,” as Thomas put it. “And yes, it is a sensible, durable fabric, and my people are known for their practicality.”

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Just Made a Third Character Bisexual

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4759/39374312244_192be0f512.jpg)TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has smashed the trope of the token gay character by making another character bisexual. In a recent episode of the CW musical comedy, viewers were surprised and delighted to see that Valencia Perez (Gabrielle Ruiz) had found a girlfriend.

Valencia was introduced in the first season as a competitor for the main character of Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) as Valencia was dating her childhood sweetheart/obsession, Josh Chan.

During this week’s episode, viewers were delighted to find that Valencia was in a relationship with a woman, making her the third bisexual character on the show.  Valencia was seen meeting her future girlfriend before an eight-month time jump, after Valencia was hired to plan a series of parties for her.  After the jump, Valencia and her as yet unnamed girlfriend were seen to be happily together, without any questions about Valencia’s sexuality from the other characters.

Illinois GOP Rep. Under Fire For Ad Mocking Transgender Community, Feminists

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4620/39374311974_7bc1c90c42.jpg)The Republican primary challenger in Illinois’ gubernatorial race is in hot water for a campaign ad that mocks the transgender community, Women’s March activists and immigration activists.  State Rep. Jeanne Ives, who is running against Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary, released the ad Saturday in an attempt to challenge her opponent’s conservative values.

Her 30-second spot features actors outfitted to portray a transgender woman, an anti-fascist protestor wearing a hood and a bandana over his face, a member of the Chicago Teachers Union and a Women’s March activist.  Each character mockingly thanks Rauner for enacting policies that support their supposed demographic. The ad, as the Chicago Tribune pointed out, misrepresents the effects of Rauner’s policies.

Asexual People Can Have Sex Lives — & Here's What They're Like

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4673/40052771622_f18d52a355.jpg)When some people hear the word “asexual,” they think of someone who doesn’t have sex. But actually, some asexual people do have sex. And they masturbate. And they look at porn. And they do pretty much everything, because there are as many ways to be asexual as there are to be sexual.

“I personally define asexuality as a spectrum, and I'm grey ace,” Alaina, 24, tells Bustle. “I need to be really emotionally connected to someone to feel sexually attracted to them or want to have sex.” Alaina is in a relationship with someone who’s not asexual.

“I like to have sex with my partner because it's a way for us to be physically intimate with one another beyond cuddling and kissing,” she says. “Because I'm asexual, I can't always jump right into sex or a sexual mood the way a lot of people can, so it takes me more time and preparation to get there, but that's something my girlfriend respects and we've worked it into our sex life.”

Social Media Backlash Follows Formation of Gay Straight Alliance Club

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4711/39039016785_b55b7539b5.jpg)After receiving school board approval and compiling a list of students interested in joining, Mt. Vernon Township High School will host a new Gay Straight Alliance club.

Many students and faculty are in favor of the new club, however, news of the new GSA has drawn many members of the community to social media with both positive and negative comments.

Dave Edwards is a teacher at the school and is to be the faculty coordinator of the entire student ran club who says he agreed to be the club's sponsor when a student approached him asking about forming a GSA.

"This is meant to be an opportunity for students to be around like-minded people and talk about issues that affect them and to support each other," Edwards said.

Anne Hathaway Remembers Her Time As Catwoman

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4696/40181693812_55c70ce6cb.jpg)The Batpod, conceived for 2008's The Dark Knight, was used by Catwoman in Rises as she helped Batman (Christian Bale) save Gotham from a neutron bomb.

The anti-hero would later use the Batpod to blast and kill villain Bane (Tom Hardy), saving Batman's life.

"Conceived by director Christopher Nolan, the Batpod provided a two-wheel alternative to Batman’s usual mode of transportation," reads the Petersen Automotive Museum's description on its official site.

"It was designed to be operated with the rider in a prone position and features a custom chassis with Hoosier racing tires and a braking system operated by controls on the left handle and right pedal. One of six built for use in The Dark Knight by Christian Bale (Batman), it was later used in The Dark Knight Rises by Anne Hathaway (Catwoman)."

Academy Award-winner Hathaway said in 2012 she was "very interested" in reprising her role as Catwoman were the "right people" to get involved, namely Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan.

Gay American Olympians Share Kiss

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4753/40181693712_b366b1313d.jpg)"We're here. We're queer. Get used to it." With his tweet Friday before the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Olympics, freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy announced that he and Adam Rippon -- the United States' two openly-gay male Winter Olympians -- had arrived in Pyeongchang ready to compete for medals and represent the LBGT community.   The pair even shared a small kiss before Friday's Opening Ceremony with Kenworthy writing in an Instagram message: "Eat your heart out, Pence."

That last jab at the vice president, who is representing the U.S. delegation in South Korea and didn't stand when a united Korean contingent entered the Olympic stadium in Friday's Opening Ceremony, is the latest exchange in the back-and-forth between Pence, Kenworthy and Rippon.

Despite Pence's best efforts, it does not appear that he'll be getting to have a conversation with Rippon, a gay U.S. figure skater, until after the Olympics wrap. Rippon had been critical of the decision for Pence to lead the U.S. delegation and reportedly turned down an offer from Pence to have a conversation about remarks that Rippon made last month, per MSN. However, he isn't completely closing the door on having a talk after the games.

Lesbian Teacher is SACKED From Her Catholic School

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4664/25343266327_ac20d85c75.jpg)Jocelyn Morffi was sacked from her first-grade teaching job at Saints Peter and Paul school, Miami, on Thursday.  She'd just returned from her wedding to Natasha Hass in the Florida Keys.  Morffi announced her shock news on social media.

She posted on Facebook: "This weekend I married the love of my life and unfortunately I was terminated from my job as a result.  In their eyes I'm not the right kind of Catholic for my choice in partner."

A letter was sent from the school to parents, on Thursday, but it failed to go into detail as to why Morffi was fired.  A group of around 20 parents convened on the school's campus and demanded an explanation from the principal, on Friday.  Mum Cintia Cini, who has a child in Morffi's class, told the Miami Herald: "We were extremely livid. They treated her like a criminal, they didn't even let her get her things out of her classroom."

Rain Pryor and Bisexual Rumors About Her Father

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4712/25343266247_90f9da5930.jpg)Rain Pryor, the daughter of the late great comedian Richard Pryor is speaking out against the bisexual rumors surrounding her father’s alleged sexual encounter with actor Marlon Brando.

Rain took to Facebook on Thursday to shut down the rumors surrounding her father’s sexuality following a recent revealing interview with Quincy Jones and Variety. Jones revealed allegations that the late actor Marlon Brando would sleep with anything, including Richard Pryor!

All you who touted Faux News and preach about wanting blacks to be represented in a great light and then posted Q’s interview are irrelevant and full of your own BS. Q, was once a brilliant music producer who is losing his mind, and decided to garner publicity for himself with a sensationalized interview; and because y’all think and equate Fame and Money with decency, you ate it up like thirsty dogs, as he spewed out a lie about my father who’s not here to defend himself.

First Gaelic Film Tackling Transgender Issues in Triple Awards Win

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4649/39316533965_c3691885e7.jpg)The first ever Gaelic film depicting a transgender character has won three major industry honours – including a public vote.  A young actor, writer and performer from the Isle of Skye claimed three of the biggest honours at the National Gaelic Film Awards.   Lana Pheutan, a 21-year-old student at Edinburgh Napier University, won the best performance prize at the annual "FilmG" ceremony at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow.

She played the main character in the short film Coig Puing a’ Trì (Five Point Three), which was also named best student film and won the People’s Choice Award for the most popular entry to the competition. It was also shortlisted for best drama and most promising new director.

Her film, shot on location in Edinburgh, shows a young woman dressing in preparation of "coming out" to her family as transgender.  However en route she is verbally abused in the street and is then left devastated from the reaction to her transformation from her sister – only for a stranger to reassure her.

Coming Out as Gender-Queer 'Freed Me From Manhood'

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4705/39316534095_a367cae5fa.jpg)Courtney Act reveals how the label gender-queer freed her.  The Celebrity Big Brother UK winner and Drag Race star spoke at National Student Pride about the importance of living beyond the binary today (10 February).  Speaking to Evan Davies, Courtney defined the moment that changed how she saw gender and sexual identity.

‘There’s a lot of labels and how important they are. Once we start living in that truth,’ she said on stage to a packed out room in the cavernous basement of the University of Westminster, London.

‘For example, gender-queer set me free from feeling not good enough as a man.  It set me free from not feeling valuable enough, strong enough as a man.  When I realized my femininity was important and could be celebrated, it laid to rest a lifelong struggle with my gender.’

Rufus Wainwright Makes "Some Art"

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4714/39639692464_4a5914902a.jpg)“Let’s make some art together,” Rufus Wainwright said near the top of his concert with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Friday night at Powell Hall.  The American-Canadian singer-songwriter and the orchestra did just that, and before the show was over the audience would join in, too. But it was Wainwright who did most of the heavy lifting.  Coming off a string of solo dates, he admitted to the audience that he was “quite nervous.”

“To come to this beautiful hall and work with this wonderful orchestra and this fantastic conductor (Lee Mills) was a bit shocking,” he said.

If that was so, it wasn’t apparent in his performance, which was intimate, emotional and, in terms of his luscious tenor vocals, silky-smooth.   But it may have come through in the song selection, which featured Wainwright performing by himself for more than a third of the concert, including more than half of the brief opening set.   Even that worked in Wainwright’s favor, however. His well-crafted songs are suited to a variety of contexts: solo, in rock band settings, and of course, with orchestral accompaniment. When the SLSO joined in, the arrangements, many of them by Max Moston, felt organic and not at all grafted on.

Are Rural Gays Happier Than City Gays?

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4702/39639692644_db14ce0bfb.jpg)When he’s helping young queer people struggling in small-town America, advice columnist Dan Savage almost invariably tells them to study hard, save up, and get the hell out of Dodge as quickly as they reasonably can. It’s only in cities like New York, Seattle, Atlanta, or Chicago, Savage advises, that gay people can truly actualize themselves in a safe(r) environment rich with cultural support networks, not to mention potential romantic partners.

While many LGBT people (including me) would agree with the general wisdom of that notion, a new paper out in this month’s issue of the Journal of Homosexuality is pushing back, producing headlines something like “Country Queens May Be Happier than City Queens.” The study, produced by sociologists Chris Wienke and Gretchen J. Hill, draws on a set of self-reported measures of wellbeing from a sample group of 632 men and women who had responded to more expansive pre-existing surveys, and concludes that there is “little support for the premise that rural living is incompatible with the needs and wants of gay men and lesbians.” “Rural areas,” the study continues, “are no less conducive to gay people’s wellbeing, as reflected in self-reports of happiness, health, and work satisfaction, than are urban areas.”

The Lesbian Pioneers Who Fooled Spain's Catholic Church

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4714/39639691914_ef2cc4bee0.jpg)There was something unusual about the fresh-faced groom that day.  The priest at the San Jorge church in A Coruña, north-western Spain, didn't see anything special, and the smattering of relatives in attendance weren't saying anything.  But both 'Mario' and his bride, Marcela, were women.

It was 1901, and the union between Elisa and Marcela remains the only known same-sex marriage in the history of the Spanish Catholic Church.   But the couple's sweet victory over the conservative culture of early 20th Century Spain would be short-lived.  They were to spend the rest of their lives on the run from persecution across two continents.

Now Elisa and Marcela's story is to be made into a film by Isabel Coixet, whose latest movie The Bookshop, with Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy, is soon to be released in the UK.

"When I think about these two women and the courage it took for one of them to pretend to be a man, it was unbelievably brave," Coixet, who also wrote the script, told the BBC.

Deadpool 2 Will Have a Bisexual, Polyamorous Superhero

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4760/39639692054_bf79d86d92.jpg)Deadpool 2 will feature a bisexual and polyamorous superhero, it has been revealed.  Shatterstar, who has appeared in Marvel comics since 1991, will star alongside Ryan Reynolds’ pansexual Deadpool in the as-yet-untitled sequel to the 2016 smash hit.   His kiss in 2009 with gay superhero Rictor was the first same-sex kiss in a mainstream Marvel comic.

Speculation over his potential role in the film was sparked after a trailer appeared to show him behind Reynolds and Terry Crews’ characters.  And Stefan Kapičić, who plays Colossus, has confirmed that both Crews and Shatterstar will be in the sequel, according to Inverse.  “That’s not CGI of Terry Crews, that is Terry Crews. You can see it clearly,” he said. “You can see behind him, Shatterstar, a really cool thing for people to geek out.”

In the comics, Shatterstar was initially presented as asexual, before his character was changed to be bi and polyamorous.  The superhero is a time-travelling mutant human from the future, who comes from the alien planet Mojoworld.  He has accelerated healing and the ability to create shockwaves and teleportation portals with his two swords.

Kansas GOP Votes to ‘Oppose All Efforts to Validate Transgender Identity’

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4675/39639692164_eeb5f818ac.jpg)The Kansas Republican Party has voted to "oppose all efforts to validate transgender identity."  The party’s state committee endorsed that statement on Saturday and also said it recognizes the dignity of those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.

The committee approved a resolution on human sexuality after a debate where some questioned the state party’s priorities. The lead proponent of the resolution said he was motivated by love.  In the resolution, the party affirms "God’s design for gender as determined by biological sex and not by self-perception." The document also opposes efforts to surgically or hormonally alter an individual’s body to conform with "perceived gender identity."

The committee approved the resolution on a voice vote. The committee is made up of about 180 people, with delegates from each congressional district, along with elected officials and leaders of groups affiliated with the party.  Eric Teetsel, who proposed the resolution, said the party needs to be willing to tell people what is true and good.

Gender and Sexuality Alliance Raises Intersex Awareness

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4754/39639692264_e64c2318a9.jpg)It’s tempting to slot people into a male-female binary, but it’s not always accurate.  Intersex people are not often spoken about; and when they are, it’s often in less-than-glowing terms or they’re confused with transgender people. There are over 70 varieties of intersex between the fully male and fully female sides of the spectrum. The subject of the movie “Orchids”, Phoebe Hart, is only one of them.

“Orchids” is a documentary by Hart and her sister Bonnie, both of whom were born with Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) and are, genetically-speaking, male. However, their bodies reject androgen, resulting in them developing as female. In the film, they document a journey of self-discovery, meeting other intersex people throughout Australia.

The film was exhibited in the Z Building atrium, to a crowd of around 30, by MCCC’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA). Popcorn was served for those who donated any amount of money. Advising the club and leading the post-film discussion was MCCC psychology professor Melissa Grey.

How to Be An Ally to the LGBT Community and Other Minorities

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4617/39639691754_020afebf1c.jpg)Pride Week is coming to an end at UCLA. Your neighborhood lesbians are playing Lady Gaga’s gay anthem “Born This Way” and there are rainbow flags everywhere. The LGBT community is down to party and flaunt their bad selves.

For those of you who are not part of the LGBT community, this may have been just another week. However, you can use this week of celebration to expand your understanding of what it means to be an ally.

It is important that an ally is not just an ally for a week, or a parade or a holiday. They must be an ally at all times. Allow me to explain how to be an ally not just to the LGBT community, but any minority community.

Emmylou Harris Lends Her Voice to Shelter Dogs

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4632/39753328424_8b08fd78f9.jpg)Known as much for her eloquently straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive singing, Emmylou Harris, who easily crosses musical genres encourages people to open their eyes to the wide variety of loveable adoptable dogs waiting at local animal shelters.

"Adopting a shelter dog may be one of the best things you can do for yourself in this crazy, confusing world; they are truly the gift that keeps on giving, and how sweet to know you have saved a life," Harris said.

A 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris' contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists' recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Admired through her career for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur, Harris shook up country radio in the 1970s, and established herself as the premiere songwriter of a generation selling more than 15 million records and garnering 13 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and two Americana Awards.   In 2006 she won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song - Motion Picture for "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" from the movie Brokeback Mountain.

Gay Parade Permit Sparks Major Debate

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4621/26593172978_28a44c2664.jpg)At first, the plan to hold a gay-pride parade here didn't seem like such a big deal. Such festivals aren't that unusual even in the traditionally conservative Deep South, and Starkville, "Mississippi's College Town," made a name for itself as the first community in the state to pass a resolution denouncing discrimination against people for sexual orientation.  But when organizers applied for a permit, they ran into a roadblock: A majority of Starkville's aldermen voted it down, transforming what had been envisioned as a relatively small-scale event into a constitutional confrontation over free speech and equal rights.

A successful gay-rights lawyer representing the event planners says there is no question she'll sue. The aldermen aren't explaining their decision earlier this week to vote down the permit, but at least one indicated he was acting on behalf of what the larger community wanted.

"I was elected to represent the constituents and the majority of the constituents from my ward have been supportive of this," Alderman Ben Carver was quoted by The Commercial Dispatch as saying in a story published Friday.

‘Black Panther's’ Deleted Lesbian Scene

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4630/39753328094_2ffaebe6e9.jpg)When “Black Panther” was announced, fans were excited by the prospect of Okoye and Ayo, having a romantic relationship as Ayo and fellow female warrior Aneka do in the comics.  It was then reported that an early screening of the film featured “Walking Dead” star Danai Gurira’s (Okoye) having a flirtatious moment with Ayo as the two danced. But Marvel quickly denied the “lesbian love” conclusions drawn by those who watched the scene.

The LGBT community quickly fired off accusations of erasure.  A Marvel spokesperson said, “the nature of the relationship between Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo in Black Panther is not a romantic one.” This sparked a movement around the hashtag #LetAyoHaveAGirlfriend, similar to the #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend campaign last May prompted by the release of Captain America: Civil War, per pinknews.com.

Now, “Black Panther’s” screenwriter has opened up about the lesbian romance which was cut from the film.  He explained that presenting Ayo and Okoye as a lesbian couple was a possibility at one stage.  “I know that there were quite a few conversations around different things, different directions with different characters, and characters that we may have,” he said. “We thought: ‘Well, maybe we’ll work it this way with an arc or work it that way with an arc.”  But when pressed, he failed to even recall the clip that was cut.

Gun Reform Advocate Emma González Is Bisexual

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4723/39753328474_421ec15c58.jpg)Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma González, who made headlines with her moving call-to-action at a gun control rally after a deadly mass shooting at her school, isn’t new to activism: The 18-year-old is openly bisexual and the president of her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA).

In a profile from the Washington Post, González shared a glimpse into her life before the massacre, which claimed the lives of 17 of her classmates and teachers.  González has been a member of Stoneman Douglas High School’s GSA for three years, she said. She was known at school for her unconventional appearance, sporting handmade clothes and a buzzcut.

The day of the shooting, González spent her lunch period selling “professions of love”—inclusive Valentine’s Day cards designed to look like marriage certificates. She was with dozens of her peers when the incident happened—and spent hours hiding and looking at Google News updates until the halls were cleared.  She’s still processing the tragedy, she told the Post.

Pentagon, White House, & Transgender Troops

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4742/39753328254_0d76609837.jpg)Defense Secretary James Mattis has made his recommendation to the White House on how the Department of Defense should handle the military service of transgender individuals, Pentagon spokesman Maj. Dave Eastburn confirmed to ABC News.  The final policy announcement is expected to be made by President Trump in late March.

Trump tweeted last July that he wanted to ban all transgender service members, saying the military "must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory."   The move reversed the 2016 Obama administration directive that allowed those individuals to serve openly for the first time.

The August memo directed the Pentagon to develop an implementation plan. Mattis then tasked a panel of experts to study the issue and inform his recommendation to the president, who will make the final policy decision.   It is scheduled to go into effect on March 23.

"The Prince and the Dressmaker": A Genderqueer Graphic Novel

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4696/39753328334_4210992d24.jpg)The Prince and the Dressmaker is the story of Frances, an aspiring dressmaker, and Prince Sebastian, heir to the throne of Belgium and the most eligible bachelor in the elites of Europe at the apex of the industrial revolution, just as the role of royalty is shifting precipitously.

Prince Sebastien is under nearly unbearable pressure: to wed, to assume leadership. But he's also under pressure thanks to his dark secret: some days, when Prince Sebastien looks in the mirror, he sees a woman. He has been stealing his mother's dresses for years and privately dressing in them, with the help of an extremely discreet and devoted servant.

One day, Frances finds herself summoned by Prince Sebastien, and, as she discovers his secret, she also finds in him her most willing patron, canvas, and audience, the first person to truly understand her artistic passion.

The two conceive of an artistic and personal partnership, with Frances helping the prince fashion a second identity as Lady Crystallia, who quickly becomes the toast of Paris and the most mysterious and best-dressed figure in high society. As the pair's collaboration deepens, so does their friendship -- and then it ruptures, when Frances has to confront the fact that she can't be known as Prince Sebastien's tailor and Lady Crystallia's tailor without compromising the prince.

Disco Queen France Joli

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4758/26593172918_46b6c33cba.jpg)On the runway of the “Warhol Ball” on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3, Brooklyn’s own Aja got read the house down by RuPaul for not polishing up her disco knowledge. While there were multiple problems Mama Ru had with Aja’s statements, her major gripe came when Aja mispronounced the name of disco star France Joli.

The name may be unfamiliar to some, but upon hearing a few bars of her smash hit 1979 song “Come to Me,” audiences will recognize the diva’s stunning voice, still played on radio stations across America. While Joli was unable to repeat Billboard Hot 100 success with her follow-ups, her catalog remained popular within the disco scene. Four decades later, Joli is still performing, an icon in her own right.

Joli, to this day, still recognizes that her career would never have been the same without the thousands of gay men on Fire Island who catapulted her into the spotlight. She was an active voice during the AIDS crisis of the ‘80s, and still supports and raises awareness for LGBTQ issues today. Not to mention that many of her shows to this day are at gay events and clubs.

‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Crash’ Producers Look Back

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4382/36035669230_f7745a88f9.jpg)Aside from last year’s Best Picture gaffe, the most notorious Oscar moment of the 21st century is probably when “Crash” upset “Brokeback Mountain” for Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006. “Brokeback” was the critical favorite and a watershed moment for queer cinema. The film had already won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director by the time Best Picture was ready to be revealed, but “Crash” ended up taking top honors.

"Brokeback” producer and co-writer Diana Ossana won the Oscar that evening for screenwriting, and she looks back at the infamous moment 12 years ago in a new story on Entertainment Weekly. Like many others, Ossana read the headlines the following morning that slammed the Academy for being homophobic and choosing “Crash,” which represented a safe choice with its surface-level look at racial tensions in America. But the producer wasn’t completely blindsided. She remembers in the weeks leading up to the Oscars hearing that high profile voters just hadn’t seen “Brokeback.”

Osanna recalls attending a party for Oscar nominees hosted by none other than Clint Eastwood. She was friends with “Crash” director Paul Haggis, who told her on the way that he would introduce her to Eastwood. But Haggis had one warning for Osanna: Eastwood had not seen “Brokeback" yet.

The Boys in the Band Going to Broadway

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4741/39930267934_2d7d218814.jpg)Producer Ryan Murphy has assembled an all-star cast for the 50th anniversary production of Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking play The Boys in the Band, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at its cast in action.

Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin DeJesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael B. Washington and Brian Hutchison make up the ensemble of the upcoming Broadway show, set for a 15-week limited engagement run at New York City’s Booth Theatre this spring.

Directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello, the play helped sparked a revolution when it premiered in 1968 thanks to its unapologetic portrait of the complicated lives of gay men —originally drawing the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, and Groucho Marx (among others).

But for the cast, who are all out gay actors themselves, it’s how the material still resonates in 2018 that makes this production a must-see.

Elsa from Frozen Could Be a Lesbian

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4703/39930268064_29d85be10c.jpg)What I love about Disney films is the way they always celebrate good old-fashioned family values. Princes go around kissing random unconscious women, for example, and there are various inter-species relationships between beauties and beasts or men and mermaids. It’s all very wholesome.  So, when news recently came out that Frozen 2 may include a lesbian relationship, right-thinking people were immediately outraged. I mean, can you imagine the message that would send to children?!

Degenerate Frozen fans have long suspected that Elsa might harbor lesbian tendencies and have internet-campaigned to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Frozen director Jennifer Lee responded to questions about whether Elsa might, indeed, get a female love interest with: “we’ll see where we go.”

The HuffPo immediately translated this non-answer into a headline announcing there was a “Glimmer of Hope” Elsa was going gay, and the media then turned this glimmer into a firestorm.

The Bisexual, Black Cabaret Dancer and Spy Who Sated Frida Kahlo and Helped Defeat the Nazis

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4695/39930268024_3367736fe6.jpg)An icon in every sense of the word, Josephine Baker is the bisexual goddess we all truly aspire to be.   She dated Frida Kahlo, was a top cabaret dancer and helped to defeat the Nazis in France through her work as a resistance spy.   The extraordinary American hero wasn’t always destined for greatness though.

Born into poverty in St. Louis in 1906, Baker started work at the ripe age of eight to help support her family.  She dropped out of school and worked as a cleaner for a wealthy white family, whom she lived with.  By the age of thirteen, she was married for the first time and working as a waitress.

To earn extra money, she danced on street corners – marking the start of her career as an entertainer.  At 15, she married a second time after moving to New York where she started dancing in clubs in Harlem.

Laverne Cox On the Struggles of Being a Transgender Black Woman

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4651/40598190582_cc00fd6086.jpg)Hundreds of students filed into the Northridge Center Thursday night to see Laverne Cox take the stage and share her many struggles with being a transgender black woman in the US.  Cox is best recognized for her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” in which she also plays a black trans woman incarcerated in an all-female prison.

Since gaining fame, Cox has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community and anyone else who has ever been made to feel uncomfortable in their own skin. The actress started a social media campaign with the hashtag #transisbeautiful to build a community of support for transgenders who are too often alienated.

Cox revealed several statistics from studies on transgender people showing the group as exceptionally vulnerable to extreme violence and suicide. She suggested this is likely linked to the national attitude and perception of transgender people who are vilified, trivialized or otherwise marginalized to the point where they are considered apart from humanity.

5 Asexual Women on How They Experience Intimacy

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4784/39930268154_0664fd2201.jpg)Asexuality is a sexual orientation that many sexual people still don't understand. There are so many misconceptions about asexuality. Unlike celibacy (where someone opts not to have sex), asexuality isn't a choice. Asexuals - also known as 'aces' - are able have intimate and loving relationships in exactly the same way that sexual people can. Here, five asexual women explain they ways they experience intimacy in their relationships.

1. "I share their joy and pain"

"It's like a 'normal' relationship, except when you go to bed you actually sleep, and there's less genital-grabbing. You still love each other and think each other are pretty and cute. Still cuddle and touch affectionately, happy kisses and look forward to spending time with them. Still do favours for them, and go out on dates. Still dream about a life together, and argue about who was supposed to do the dishes."

"Chappaquiddick" Starring Kate Mara - New Trailer and Images

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4784/25868625537_d7c4e30d87.jpg)In the riveting suspense drama, Chappaquiddick, the scandal and mysterious events surrounding the tragic drowning of a young woman, as Ted Kennedy drove his car off the infamous bridge, are revealed in the new movie starring Jason Clarke as Ted Kennedy and Kate Mara as Mary Jo Kopechne. Not only did this event take the life of an aspiring political strategist and Kennedy insider, but it ultimately changed the course of presidential history forever.

Through true accounts, documented in the inquest from the investigation in 1969, director John Curran and writers Andrew Logan and Taylor Allen, intimately expose the broad reach of political power, the influence of America’s most celebrated family; and the vulnerability of Ted Kennedy, the youngest son, in the shadow of his family legacy.

Gay Conversion Therapist Found Guilty

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4771/25868625397_900e11dfe9.jpg)A long-time Toronto psychiatrist, known for administering gay conversion therapy, has been found guilty of sexually abusing two of his male patients.

Dr. Melvyn Iscove, 72, has long believed that homosexuality is a disorder that can “be overcome,” and was described by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario discipline committee as having a “special interest in the treatment of patients with problems related to homosexuality.”

But the committee also found that the doctor had engaged in oral and anal sex and mutual masturbation with some of his male clients during therapy sessions. The doctor told his patients that engaging in sexual acts was part of their treatment, and would allow them to stop fantasizing about them, according to the report.

Bridal Shop Would Rather Shut Down Than Serve Lesbian Weddings

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4772/25868625737_1a5567103b.jpg)A Pennsylvania bridal shop has announced that it will close permanently in anticipation of a new city ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

W.W. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsburg, which made headlines last year when its Christian owners refused to sell a wedding dress to a lesbian couple, will officially close its doors March 30 before the local ordinance passes.

Lisa Boucher, who co-owns the store with her mother and two sisters, tells the Christian Post that the ordinance will not include religious exemptions.  “I guess what would happen is that a customer would come in and once we deny them, they would sue us,” Boucher says. “You know how that goes with other [businesses].”

In a recent Facebook post, a shop representative cited Matthew 19:4, a Bible verse about marriage, to justify its decision to shut down rather than serve same-sex couples: “We have the right given to us by God and the Constitution to live our lives according to our faith. We will not be forced by government, local ordinances or bullies to participate in something that goes against our faith.”

Bisexual Pro Wrestler Comes Out

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4779/25868625807_8f3b418956.jpg)Though Anthony Bowens has taken on some of professional wrestling’s most intimidating fighters, he didn’t feel comfortable to come out to his fellow athletes about his sexuality, that is, until he got a little help from his boyfriend.

The 27-year-old from New Jersey kept his bisexuality under wraps from friends and family for the majority of his life. Even when he entered a relationship with his boyfriend, Michael Pavano, Bowens asked him to keep their love a secret. It wasn’t until Pavano later uploaded a YouTube video that introduced Bowens as his boyfriend, and Bowens’ friends in the wrestling world viewed it, that he saw they were supportive of him. Coming out, he discovered, could be better than he thought.

Caitlyn Jenner On Trump Administration

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4772/25868625647_8709550088.jpg)Caitlyn Jenner says in a new interview that President Trump's administration has been the “worst” thing to happen to the transgender rights movement and has set the community back 20 years.

“As far as trans issues, this administration has been the worst ever,” Jenner told Newsweek for a story published Saturday.   “They’ve set our community back 20 years, easily,” Jenner said. “It’s going to be hard to change, but we’ve been through these types of things before and we’ll continue to fight it.”

Jenner, one of the world’s most famous openly transgender women, was initially a supporter of the president.  However, Jenner was critical of the president last year after he ordered the termination of federal protections for transgender students that allow them to use the restroom that aligns with their gender identity.

New Bill Would Protect Intersex Children

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4780/40029411414_462f4871e6.jpg)School administrations, local governments, and Hollywood are slowly beginning to recognize transgender individuals’ basic human rights. But one group of gender-nonconforming individuals still lives largely in the dark — people who are born intersex. Around 1 in 1,500 to 2,000 babies are born with physical or hormonal abnormalities that blur the lines of their sex.

In the past, it was standard to “assign” a sex to babies who were, say, born with both sets of genitalia. Parents commonly chose the gender they wanted their child to be, and raised them accordingly. But as unconventional identities surrounding gender and sexuality become more acceptable, the medical community has received pressure to stop “normalization” surgeries on infants, instead letting the child decide for themself what gender they are as they grow up.

Workshop Seeks to Increase LGBT Awareness

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4498/37204906900_7be4eb9f59.jpg)Through a workshop Thursday at the University of Minnesota, the LGBT community attempted to counter discrimination against less recognized genders and sexualities through reiterating the role allies can play in LGBT acceptance.

The workshop, called “Being an Ally,” was held at Bruininks Hall Thursday evening to discuss the importance of allies to the LGBT community, as well as ways allies can play a larger role in uplifting marginalized sexualities and genders.

The hour-long event was organized primarily by Women in Science and Engineering and Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — two student groups focused on creating a more inclusive environment for LGBT students at the University.

Organizers and presenters at the event said that it is often difficult for students to express their true gender identities on campus, especially for those who are not cisgender.

Why Anna Faris Was ‘Terrified’ by ‘Overboard’ Remake

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/801/40160664884_0607a29daf.jpg)“Mom” star Anna Faris has flipped the script in the remake of 1987’s classic “Overboard,” which starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

In the movie, Anna plays a down-and-out carpet cleaner who dupes a rude yacht owner, played by co-star Eugenio Derbez, into thinking he’s her husband after he falls off his own boat.

On Thursday, “Extra’s” Mark Wright sat down with Anna, who spoke to Goldie and Kurt about making the movie. Anna shared in Beverly Hills, “I ran into them at a business function and Kurt said, ‘We're going to dinner, we hear that you are doing our movie.'”

Though she was nervous, she accepted a dinner invitation from the couple and it all turned out well. Anna revealed, “We had a really lovely dinner. I was terrified because to me it's a movie that I’ve loved for so long growing up and it’s sort of their love story. I wanted to be a part of this reimagining, but I was like, ‘These are big shoes to fill!’”

Irish Prime Minister Joins St Patrick's Parade

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4794/40160664684_54d2404d83.jpg)Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, joined by Gov. Cuomo and followed by another 150,000 marchers, led the way Saturday at the 257th edition of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  The governor introduced a bit of politics to the annual day of Irish pride, noting that Varadkar was an openly gay man at an event where gay and lesbian groups were once angrily banned.

And he mentioned the significance of a parade celebrating the nation’s immigrant past. Between 1850-1929, an estimated 4 million Irish transplants came to the United States.  “We’re all immigrants,” Cuomo declared on a bright, chilly March day. “Unless you’re a native American, you’re an immigrant. And it’s immigrants together.”

Varadkar, who was also accompanied by Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.), stopped at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to greet Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

Thousands Protest in Brazil After Apparent Assassination

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/790/40160664434_2212dcb88b.jpg)Protests have been held across Brazil after councillor and activist Marielle Franco and her driver were shot dead in a suspected assassination.

Franco, 38, was an openly serving lesbian politician who fought for minorities across Rio de Janeiro, where she grew up in one of the many favelas. She won the fifth-highest vote count of council members in 2015, defying the odds which were set against her as a black, gay woman.

She often spoke openly about the need to crack down on discrimination against minority groups, as well as police violence who she said exercised excessive force.  Police officials confirmed that two men in a car fired nine shots at Franco and her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, 39, on Wednesday.

Republican Mocks Florida Shooting Survivor, Quits Maine Race

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/784/40160664584_3d9979c469.jpg)A Republican who tweeted insults at two survivors of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has withdrawn his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives.

Leslie Gibson told the Bangor Daily News on Friday he decided to quit the race for House District 57 after meeting with friends, family and colleagues. He told the Sun Journal, "it's the best thing for everybody."  Gibson drew criticism after he called Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma Gonzalez "a skinhead lesbian" and her classmate David Hogg "a bald-faced liar" in tweets earlier this month, reports the Press Herald.   For the record, Emma Gonzalez is out as bisexual.

Gunman Nikolas Cruz admitted to shooting and killing 17 people at the school on Valentine's Day. Following the shooting, Gonzalez, Hogg and other Marjory Stoneman Douglas students have criticized the National Rifle Association and called on lawmakers to find ways to stop school shootings.

Mom Shares Transgender Teen's Heartbreaking Suicide Note

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4779/40160664294_988f3ce1a5.jpg)The mother of a transgender teen from Florida who died by suicide this month is hoping to raise awareness by sharing her child’s story and encouraging parents to listen to their children.

With her high school graduation just around the corner in June, Eric Peter Verbeeck—who was born a male—was looking forward to beginning anew. She had already taken her first steps toward transitioning into a woman named Hope, first undergoing hormone treatments and by wearing female undergarments. One of the biggest steps for the teenager occurred almost a year ago when she came out to her mother, Patricia McKay Verbeeck, about her inner struggle of living in a body that didn’t reflect her identity as a female.

“He told me he needed to talk about his identity,” Verbeeck, who lives in Miami, tells PEOPLE of the heart-to-heart with her child. “He told me he was transgender, that he was a girl trapped in a boy’s body. He said, ‘This is the wrong body for me.’ ”

Being Asexual is A-Okay

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/810/40827574282_ec69c29c1f.jpg)We live in a hyper-sexualized culture where pretty much everything revolves around sex and general sexiness. However, living in this culture, there is a group of people who have been secluded and looked down upon for one reason: they are asexual; they are not interested in sex and have no sexual feelings or desires whatsoever.

Our society has cloistered these people off and looked at them almost as lesser beings. “You don’t like sex? There must be something wrong with you.” For some, they do feel like something is wrong with them, because society has made it seem like it’s not okay to be asexual. Our culture, especially the culture that comes with being in college, is very sexualized in nature. This creates a very real problem for people who don’t feel any sexual attraction. They may feel like something is broken inside them or they become alienated by their peers. People may think that they’re depressed or that they are, in some way, not okay. This is not the case.

Group Helps Aging LGBT Community

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/810/40160664494_cd11a45af1.jpg)Older adults in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community face unique challenges as they become more vulnerable and are forced to depend on outside services for care and assistance.

That’s the belief of the LGBT Aging Coalition of Ventura County, which was formed in late 2015 to bring together allies and members of the LGBT community.

“We’re trying to provide awareness and solutions for the LBGT aging population,” said Michelle Rosenblum, of Ventura, a transgender woman who serves on the board of directors for Compass Ventura County, a nonprofit that collaborates with other LGBT organizations to improve the mental health and well-being of the community.  Compass sponsors the coalition, as does Senior Concerns in Thousand Oaks.

Challenges for LGBT seniors include going “back in the closet” when they go into nursing homes because other residents can be so conservative, Rosenblum said.

Heath Ledger's On-Set Prank Revealed

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/803/27147548408_5d42170622.jpg)Heath Ledger was a prankster according to one of his co-stars from the 2001 film A Knight's Tale.  Actor Alan Tudyk, known for playing quirky characters in films including 28 Days, Dodgeball and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, remembers the late Australian actor fondly from the medieval fantasy film.

"He was one of those people that had a real contagious personality, he was very Australian to me," Tudyk told AAP.

Ledger turned 21 while making the movie and according to Tudyk, who played a squire alongside Ledger's wannabe knight, had fun playing pranks on set.

"He (Ledger) was mischievous. He was always playing around. He would play tricks on the film's producer. He hid the producer's expensive jacket that he was showing off at the top of this really high pole," Tudyk said.

The coming-of-age love story follows gay teenager Simon, played by Nick Robinson, who begins an anonymous online relationship with another closeted young man who allegedly goes to the same school.

Accordingly, Harris was so moved when he saw the film, which also stars Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner, that he bought out a movie theatre in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

"So my husband David (@dbelicious) and I enjoyed @lovesimonmovie so much, we wanted to pay it forward. Others are doing this, and I'm so on board," the 44-year-old actor wrote on Instagram on Friday. "So we bought out a screening at a theatre in my hometown of Albuquerque, NM for this Sunday afternoon.  "It's free, and a great chance to see this wonderful film. Hope you can make it!"

Turning Away Gay Prospective Parents

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/795/27147547698_38f092fdcb.jpg)Oklahoma lawmakers may soon sanction private adoption agencies turning away same-sex couples and other prospective parents who don’t meet their religious criteria, a possibility cheered by the Roman Catholic Church and many evangelical Christians and lambasted as discriminatory by gay rights groups.

It’s a conflict playing out across the nation, and both sides say that if the other wins, the number of children placed in loving homes will fall.

Seven states have passed laws - including Alabama, South Dakota and Texas last year - like the one proposed in Oklahoma. A bill with comparable language also has been introduced in Congress, according to The Associated Press. At least two other states - Georgia and Kansas - are debating similar legislation. At the same time, some local governments are withholding support from agencies that won’t serve gay prospective parents.

Cynthia Nixon 'Unqualified Lesbian'

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/820/27147547958_2586c85b8a.jpg)Actor Cynthia Nixon has delivered a sharp response after being called an “unqualified lesbian” by a supporter of Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Nixon announced Monday she will try to unseat Cuomo, who has been governor of the state since 2011, in the upcoming state Democratic primary in September. In an interview a day later, former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is also a lesbian, levelled the insult at Nixon.

Quinn apologized and tried to clarify her remarks soon after. “Cynthia Nixon’s identity has no bearing on her gubernatorial candidacy and it was not my intention to suggest it did,” she said in a statement to Time.  “Cynthia Nixon aggressively opposed my candidacy in New York, despite my qualifications for the office and despite my strong progressive credentials. I was attempting to make a comparison between the two of us,” Quinn said, referencing her own run for mayor.

Emma Gonzalez on Bisexuality & Gun Control

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/788/40976641342_a8a597dc2e.jpg)Parkland survivor Emma Gonzalez, the bisexual president of Stoneman Douglas High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance, has spoken out about the way her sexuality fuels her activism.

Together with fellow students like David Hogg and Cameron Kasky, the 18-year-old has prompted a tidal wave of public sentiment in favour of better gun regulation following the shooting in Florida.   She has been at the forefront of the #NeverAgain movement since her impassioned speech at a rally last month in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when she emotively repeated the phrase “We call BS” about NRA-funded politicians, gun advocates and those who don’t believe the Parkland teenagers know enough to speak up.

Yesterday, at the March For Our Lives rally in Washington DC, she made an emotional speech which left her and many of the hundreds of thousands of protesters in tears.

Is Trump's New Transgender Troop Ban Already D.O.A?

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/815/27147547868_b95c1f8135.jpg)In another end-of-week news dump, the White House on Friday night released a memorandum effectively banning transgender people from serving in the military, following through on orders Donald Trump issued on Twitter last summer. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory,” Trump wrote at the time, “and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

That initial order, which came as a surprise to the Pentagon, was put on ice after Defense Secretary James Mattis said he would need time to review the order.  In the meantime, several top military officials and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff tacitly criticized the ban, offering staunch defenses of the transgender men and women serving in uniform.  Saving face, the White House in August directed the Pentagon to formalize the president’s tweet.

A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop Of Horrors (music by Alan Menken, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman) has devoured the hearts of theatregoers for decades. The story follows hapless floral assistant Seymour Krelborn, who pines for his coworker Audrey, a Skid Row girl who's always wanted more. When he stumbles upon a strange seedling, he nurses it to life, only to find it growing into a foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivorous plant with some devilish intents.

She’s Famous, From Barbados, and an LGBT Ally

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/806/27147548228_9171001594.jpg)“Why are we homophobic in Barbados and other countries in the Eastern Caribbean?” a popular host of a morning television show in Barbados asked me. I was on the island – and his show – to talk about a new Human Rights Watch report about discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Barbados and six other Eastern Caribbean countries.

After the show the taxi-driver, who had been waiting for me in the studio, took me back into Bridgetown.  “I watched the show,” he said without further comment.  Then, out of the blue, he said: “If Rihanna would speak out against the ban of gay love, that would be heard here on the island.”

I thanked him for his suggestion, but I should have taken the opportunity to tell him of the occasions and different ways Rihanna has already spoken out against LGBT discrimination and acted as an ally to the LGBT community.  Knowledge of Rihanna’s support for LGBT rights should be more widely known in her home country. LGBT people in Barbados and elsewhere in the Eastern Caribbean certainly need allies like her.

One Problem With Hopper And Joyce, According To David Harbour

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4499/37796245776_5aa6cbe5ff.jpg)While Netflix has become a behemoth home for TV content, there are some originals that stand above the rest. There's House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, as well as newer favorites like Stranger Things. The latter quickly became a significant pop culture moment when Season 1 arrived two summers ago, and its triumphant sophomore run did not disappoint. Stranger Things 2 truly helped to expand the world of Hawkins, Indiana, while allowing its starring characters to grow. Fans have been hoping for Hopper and Joyce to get together since the very beginning, and now actor David Harbour has given one quick reason why it wouldn't be easy.

It looks like David Harbour doesn't exactly have faith that his signature character and Winona Ryder's Joyce Byers would actually be a good couple. They're both dealing with their fair share of baggage, although that's never stopped anyone else before. They're also pretty terrible communicators who are holding in trauma, so the odds might not be in their favor.

Gay Bar Claps Back at Claim, Gay Man Was Kicked Out For His 'Political Ideology'

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/896/27272811898_806c930362.jpg)A New York gay bar responded to a claim by alt-right journalist Chadwick Moore they kicked him out for his ‘political ideology.’   Moore took to social media yesterday (30 March) to blast the Metropolitan gay bar in Brooklyn.

He wrote on Facebook: ‘I was just asked to leave Metropolitan Bar because my political ideology would cause a stir. I’ve been a regular there for 13 years. Any thoughts?’

Moore also tweeted the bar’s phone number for his supporters to back him up. As a result, people started flooding the Metropolitan Facebook page with negative reviews.  He then later tweeted: ‘I bought a round. Then was told, people don’t want you here. Then was escorted out, with my straight man friend.’

Metropolitan quickly responded on Facebook to the claim: ‘You have come in here quite frequently without incident.  We understand that your political views do not match ours, but that doesn’t mean you are not welcome here.'

Hayley Kiyoko, Pop Music's "Lesbian Jesus"

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/885/27272811988_c6fb2fd7fb.jpg)Hayley Kiyoko has no idea how she earned the nickname “Lesbian Jesus.” Or how the term ended up on Urban Dictionary as “a title given to actress/singer Hayley Kiyoko by her fans.” But she is very proud of the moniker.  “The first thing I saw was someone on social media had posted this hilarious picture of my face photoshopped on Jesus’s body, and then I think it spiraled from there,” she says. “I don’t know what it means, but that’s gotta be, like, the highest honor! I mean, Jesus is the top!”

This was a few weeks after her Refinery29 photoshoot in Manhattan in March. Kiyoko was Facetiming me from the backseat of her road trip from Nashville to Huntsville, Alabama, where she was headed to meet 20 fans at a radio event promoting her debut album, Expectations. Those 20 fans were just a small sampling of Lesbian Jesus’s devotees (there are 766,000 of them on Instagram alone), a rabid following that’s putting Kiyoko on track to become one of her generation’s only openly gay pop stars.

Alyson Stoner Comes Out as Bisexual

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/805/27272812028_ea6995e861.jpg)Actress and dancer Alyson Stoner has opened up about falling in love with a woman.  The Cheaper by the Dozen star shared her struggle to embrace her sexuality in a new essay for Teen Vogue on Friday.  Alyson does not label herself as gay, but instead explains she is bisexual after beginning a relationship with her dance instructor.

The 24-year-old, who has appeared in films such as Step Up, and Disney Channel shows including The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, wrote about how she became “mesmerised and intimidated” when she attended a dance workshop.

“After I dizzied myself from doing knee spins, she walked toward me to correct my form,” Alyson wrote. “My heart raced wildly and my body grew hot. Was I nervous to fail in front of an expert? Was I breathing heavily from being out of shape? Her smile was the most electrifying thing I’d ever seen.” And as Alyson began to get to know the dance instructor, she struggled with her feelings that weren’t “quite sisterly or platonic”.

Teacher Comes Out as Transgender

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/810/27272811788_b527265853.jpg)When he graduated from college more than a decade ago, Mario Suarez knew two things for sure: He was going to be a teacher and he was going to transition from female to male.

Right after graduation, he landed a job as a high school algebra teacher in Austin, Texas. "I was already living outside of the professional life as a male," he says. "So the next step, through my therapist, she suggested coming out in the workplace."  But because his workplace was a high school, that meant Mario, now 34, wouldn't only be coming out to his co-workers, but to the hundreds of students, and their parents, who cycled through the school each year.

Mario says that when he approached his principal at the time to discuss his transition, "He asked me, 'How would you feel if you started fresh somewhere else?' "

But Mario didn't want to leave. He admired his colleagues and his students, he says. So, he stayed. And during his transition, his students asked him a lot of questions that he said came from a place of pure curiosity. He prepared for a lot of questions from parents, too, but to his surprise, those questions never came.

Asexuality is Still Hugely Misunderstood

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/889/40251105845_3110100081.jpg)“Between the worlds of the sweet and the savory. Not quite popcorn, not quite candy. What are we?”

This seemingly silly question comes from BoJack Horseman’s Todd Chavez (voiced by Aaron Paul) as he contemplates a bag of kettle corn — and his own sexual identity — in the Netflix series’ fourth season. In the previous season, Todd admitted that he wasn’t gay or straight; he was “nothing.” But he didn’t actually come out as asexual then, a personal revelation he avoided tooth and nail until his late 20s, preferring the safety of “nothing.”

Having a beloved character on a popular show come out was a huge deal for the asexual community: When you’re not one thing or the other, and you never see anyone like yourself reflected in media, it can feel like you don’t exist. As an asexual aromantic — meaning I’m not interested in having sex or relationships — I considered myself “nothing” for years because I didn’t see an alternative. For me and many others, watching Todd’s journey from nothing to something was life-changing.

Diana Ossana:  Who Was Almost In Brokeback Mountain

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/788/40424422385_d2cc44d29c.jpg)During the break of a double feature at Santa Monica's Aero Theatre featuring screenings of Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, respective screenwriters Ron Nyswaner and Diana Ossana sat down for a Q&A (moderated by The Wrap critic Alonso Duralde) that included a gossip session about casting.

Oscar-winning scribe Ossana dished about the difficult eight-year process of getting her film made and how, during that time, she witnessed a long line of "prominent young actors" hop on and hop off the project, known around town as a "gay cowboy" movie. "Nobody would commit," Ossana said of the film, which at one time looked like it was close to going forward with director Gus Van Sant and stars Matt Damon and Joaquin Phoenix. (Mark Wahlberg was also considered at one point.) "We sent it to Edward Norton [to direct] and Joel Schumacher and dozens of people and they all came back saying they loved it but no one would commit. They didn't give us any real excuse why they wouldn't. I guess they saw it as too difficult."

One of the biggest challenges for filmmakers was getting executives to understand that this was not a "universal love story," as many tried to position it. "This is a movie about two men who fall in love. It's very specific," she said. "It's about Ennis and Jack and it's about their flaws and their mistakes and their struggles and their humanity."

Singing As If You're Straight... When You're Gay

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/900/40424421925_131669c320.jpg)This month saw the release of an EP featuring six tracks that have been given a same-sex twist by changing the pronouns around in the lyrics.

Dylan has re-recorded the 1929 song She's Funny That Way, changing it to He's Funny That Way, for Universal Love: Wedding Songs Reimagined.  He's joined by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie, who sings The Beatles' And I Love Her (Him); Kesha, who tackles Janis Joplin's I Need a Man (Woman) to Love; and country/blues singer Valerie June, who sings Mad About the Boy (Girl).  The compilation also features St Vincent, who turns The Crystals' And Then He Kissed Me into And Then She Kissed Me, while Bloc Party's Kele Okereke does the same with The Temptations' My Girl (Guy).

Pop has always had a strong connection with the gay community, and many artists and groups - including Boy George and Bronski Beat - have been out and proud.  Before them the likes of Dusty Springfield blazed a trail. She came out as bisexual in 1970 in the London Evening Standard, saying: "I know that I'm as perfectly capable of being swayed by a girl as by a boy."

Jay-Z on His Mom's Coming Out

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/788/40424422125_4c5f5bb60f.jpg)Jay-Z might be known for his tough guy image, but the rapper says he cried tears of joy when his mother, Gloria Carter, came out to him as lesbian. In an episode of Netflix's "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman," Jay-Z says of the moment, "I really cried. That's a real story. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free."

The "4:44" artist talked about the track "Smile," in which he raps, "Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian, had to pretend so long that she's a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate. Society shame and the pain was too much to take. Cried tears of joy when you fell in love. Don't matter to me if it's a him or her. I just want to see you smile through all the hate." His mother also performs, saying, "Living in the shadow. Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free, because that's what you want them to see. Living two lives, happy, but not free."

Jay-Z said his mother first opened up to him about it while he was working on his album eight months ago.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/790/40424422555_92ed401ffc.jpg)Meagan C. Simonaire (R-Anne Arundel), the youngest member of the Maryland General Assembly, sounded tentative as she took the floor: “I actually thought about being silent on this issue.”

The matter before the House of Delegates on Wednesday was a bill that would ban licensed health professionals from practicing gay-conversion therapy on minors. That pseudoscientific “gay cure” attempts to change sexual orientation or gender identity through techniques that have included electric shocks and induced vomiting. It operates on the thoroughly discredited premise that homosexuality is a sickness or moral failure, and it has been condemned by major medical and mental health associations.

“What is not broken cannot be fixed,” Simonaire, 27, told her fellow delegates. And then she shared the story of “a girl who grew up in the best family,” and realized when she was a teen that she was bisexual. Her parents were “heartbroken and disgusted.” Rather than accept her as she revealed herself to be, they looked into conversion therapy — an option the girl refused.

Alaskans Vote 'No' on Anti-Transgender 'Bathroom Bill'

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/880/39510803460_9f9a8dbd78.jpg)Nearly 53 percent of voters in Anchorage, Alaska, cast their ballots in opposition to a proposition that would have required transgender people to use public facilities that match the sex on their birth certificates.  The historic April 3 election, conducted primarily through mail-in-ballots, was the first time U.S. citizens directly voted on a so-called transgender “bathroom bill.”

“Anchorage voters refused to succumb to hate and bigotry by rejecting this discriminatory, anti-transgender ballot measure. Community leaders, businesses, faith leaders, and public officials all spoke out in support of equality,” Chad Griffin, president of national LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement sent to NBC News.

The unofficial results, which will be certified on April 17, came as a relief to Anchorage transgender activist Lillian Lennon.

“If Proposition 1 were to pass, I would fear that I could be blocked from using the restroom that I identify with,” Lennon, 19, told NBC News. “I would be forced to go into a men’s restroom where I wouldn’t feel safe or protected, and I definitely don’t think that anyone in that restroom would feel particularly comfortable with me there either.”

‘Roseanne’ Genderqueer Character Shooting Hoops

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/821/39510803660_de1fd26eaa.jpg)The hit sitcom ‘Roseanne’ rose from the dead Tuesday night and scored with a gender non-conforming character who defied all stereotypes in the parting shot.

The hourlong two-episode premier didn’t shy away from the 2016 election, pitting sister pro-Clinton Jackie and pro-Trump Roseanne against one another in a constant yet fun series of jabs. The family is back together again, organically tackling issues like weapons in school, unemployment and even surrogacy.

Yet it was Mark, played by young actor Ames McNamara, who brought to the show a poignant conversation about gender norms.   Mark is a boy. And he loves what are traditionally “girls’ clothes.” Skirts, dresses, sparkles. He likes them. They are a part of him. And even as his grandpa Dan (John Goodman) clearly struggles with it, Mark is confidently himself.  The second episode (part two of the hourlong premier) revolves in large part around Mark, his gender non-conformity and the issues it’s raising at his new school.

Gay Ally Steven Bochco Dies

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/822/40424422045_4976cfd2ef.jpg)“Steven Bochco, boundary-pushing TV creator behind ‘NYPD Blue’ and ‘Hill Street Blues,’ dies at 74,” declares the April 1 Los Angeles Times’ headline. The Emmy-winning television writer-producer died in his sleep Sunday after a battle with cancer. He was 74.

The Times and other media outlets chronicle Bochco’s impact over the TV landscape, bringing edgy, complicated, more realistic plotlines and large cast diversity into people’s homes, often with studio heads and advertisers biting their fingernails. But creatively bucking locked-in commercial broadcast trends in the 1980s and 1990s yielded 30 Emmy nominations and 10 wins.

“Steven reinvented the television drama by creating and executive-producing ‘Hill Street Blues’ [in 1981],” said TV executive Warren Littlefield, who worked with Bochco at NBC.

“At first, television wasn’t quite ready for this groundbreaking drama, certainly not on a network known for a talking car. Television critics celebrated it and at the Emmy Awards following Season One, a star was born. The DNA for quality drama at NBC was created by Steven Bochco and all of broadcasting would join NBC and covet what Steven was capable of doing.”

Gustavo Santaolalla's Music Travels From TV to Film to the Concert Stage

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/41483861051_f54f5f824f.jpg)If you listen to Mexico’s most famous rock band, Café Tacuba, you likely recognize Gustavo Santaolalla’s name as the group’s producer.  That’s just one of the dozens of Latin American bands he’s worked with. And if you saw the films “Babel” or “Brokeback Mountain,” you’ve heard the Oscar-winning soundtracks he composed. But you may not know his history as a musician and performer. He’s currently re-visiting that part of his career.

Santaolalla’s recording studio is in the hills of Echo Park. From the street, it looks like a normal 1950s ranch-style house. But just inside the entrance, there’s a wall with more than 50 covers of the albums he’s produced over the last few decades.

He walks in, singing a melody, and starts talking about the new album from his group, Bajofondo. The band plays contemporary music, re-inventing tango and other styles from Argentina, a region called Rio de la Plata. At first, he hesitates to tell me the name, but then…“I’m going to say it. The album is called 'Aura.' Aura, for us, means the same thing [as] here ... the energy field that surrounds living things. But also in Argentinian, aura it’s like slang to say ahora — now.”

Gay Rights Lawyer Dies After Setting Himself On Fire

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/793/40770567574_4bdb405b72.jpg)A prominent lawyer who spent years fighting for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people set himself on fire Saturday.  David S. Buckel's charred remains were found in a New York park, The New York Times reported. In a letter Buckel emailed to the publication and other media outlets earlier that day, he wrote, "Honorable purpose in life invites honorable purpose in death."

A former marriage project director for Lambda Legal, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of LGBT people, Buckel played a major role in a long, dark battle for recognition and equality.

In one of his most noted cases, he represented the mother of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who had notified a Nebraska sheriff that he had been raped. The sheriff informed Teena's assailants who killed him in the days that followed. "It should not be the case that reporting a crime makes matters worse for you," Buckel told The Daily Nebraskan in 2001. Eventually the sheriff was found liable for failing to protect Teena and his brutal murder was dramatized in a film called Boys Don't Cry starring Hillary Swank.

Lesbians Are Not Being Properly Represented In Hollywood

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/868/40770567504_0cee0cd916.jpg)It’s no secret that homophobia in Hollywood has thrived for countless years. With so much violence and discrimination toward the gay community, it has been a huge breath of fresh air to see more homosexual representation in the film industry.

Queer-centric movies such as “Call Me By Your Name” and “Moonlight” were both able to nab Oscar nominations, with “Moonlight” even winning Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards.  “Love Simon” is another coming-of-age movie centered around a queer main character that has had a huge impact on, not only the gay community but young people of all ages.

All of the movies mentioned were groundbreaking and definitely refreshing to see; however, they all focus on the romance between men. Oftentimes, it seems like the film industry only focuses on the G in LGBTQ+. Lesbians are overwhelmingly underrepresented in Hollywood.

Megan Marx in Talks to Become the First Bisexual Bachelorette

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/789/41483861111_7b6edb7435.jpg)Megan Marx has made no secret of her dream to find love with either a man or a woman on Bachelor in Paradise.  But before flying over to Fiji and catching the eye of Jake Ellis, the Bachelor beauty tells NW she was actually lined up to become the first ever bisexual Bachelorette instead!

"I was meant to be the Bachelorette on Sophie [Monk]'s season as they wanted someone bisexual," Megan, 29, confesses.  "But then Sophie asked if she could do the show and she was awesome and maybe I wasn't ready."

Although she lost the job to Soph, show bosses were so keen to make the franchise more diverse they flew the fan favourite back to Australia from Europe to try to convince her to sign up for the season.  "It was in the early stages [of planning], but it would have been mainly guys and a few girls in the mansion," Megan tells us.

Federal Judge Shuts Down Trump’s ‘New’ Transgender Military Ban

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/815/27147547868_b95c1f8135.jpg)A federal court in Seattle in a ruling on Friday shut down President Trump’s “new” ban on transgender people serving in the military, which was issued by his administration last month.

Trump had claimed that the old ban was revoked and replaced with the new one, but U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman rejected this distinction, noting that the new documents “do not substantively rescind or revoke the ban, but instead threaten the very same violations that caused it and other courts to enjoin the ban in the first place.”
Indeed, she found the claim that the new ban has exceptions wholly unconvincing:

The Court is not persuaded. The Implementation Plan prohibits transgender people — including those who have neither transitioned nor been diagnosed with gender dysphoria — from serving, unless they are “willing and able to adhere to all standards associated with their biological sex.”

What is LGBTQIAP2?

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4451/37279196642_7275b74142.jpg)Most of us are aware that LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender – but for some, the term is gradually expanding to include other identities and orientations.  The term LGBTQIAP2 stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual and Two Spirit.   In the 1980s, the acronym LGBT arose after activist groups campaigned for an inclusive description for non-straight and transgender people.

Over time, it has grown to recognize and include other sexual and gender orientations. For some people, though, the grouping together of lots of identities can be problematic.

Eleanor Formby, an academic at Sheffield Hallam University has criticized the use of the word “community” to describe LGBT people, arguing it is not suitable “for such a diverse group.”  To understand exactly what LGBTQIAP2 means, let’s break it down.

Michelle Williams, Her 12 Best Films Ranked

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4445/37012534324_f9466580f6.jpg)Michelle Williams has always gone her own way. The Montana-born actress was legally emancipated from her parents at age 15 so that she could better pursue her acting career and pursue it she did. By age 18, she was starring in the popular TV drama “Dawson’s Creek,” in which she played Meg, a loose big-city teen who relocates to small-town life. In her time away from the TV series, she acted in many small independent films, none of which connected until 2003, when one finally did — Tom McCarthy‘s “The Station Agent,” in which she played a small-town librarian who becomes close to a socially-withdrawn dwarf (Peter Dinklage). That performance earned Williams her first SAG Awards nomination for Best Ensemble.

Williams is now back onscreen as Amy Schumer‘s cosmetic company boss in the new comedy “I Feel Pretty,” so now may be a great time to look back at her career. Take a tour above of her 12 greatest screen performances, ranked worst to best.

Gay Teacher Told 'Find a Woman, Get a Pet' Instead of Kids

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/891/39826795130_74c46b8d35.jpg)A gay employee in a South Jersey school district was harassed by his coworkers over his desire to be a foster parent with one telling him to "just get another pet" instead of a child and he should "find a woman" to have a child with, a lawsuit claims.

Joseph Longo III filed suit on Feb. 9 in Superior Court under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination alleging "harassment based upon sexual orientation, familial, status and discrimination and discrimination based upon gender stereotype" by the Salem City School District and employees there.

In his suit, Longo of Quinton, identified himself as a homosexual male and foster parent. He says he began working in the district in September 2000 and is listed on the district's website as a social worker affiliated with the Child Study Team.

Lesbian Mum Told Baby Won’t Be Legally Registered Because She is Gay

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/859/39826795010_06fb9f7f76.jpg)Chiara Foglietta, a councillor in the Italian city of Turin, says authorities won’t recognise her baby, because he was conceived through artificial insemination.

Due to Italian laws, fertility treatments are only available to heterosexual couples. When she and her partner, Micaela Ghisleni, tried to register their son Niccolo Pietro after his birth on Friday last week, she was told to say she had had sex with a man. In a Facebook post, Ms Foglietta said she was told by authorities: ‘You must declare you had union (sexual relations) with a man to register your son. ‘There is no form to say you had artificial insemination.’

She said the legal black hole is due to a 2002 ministerial decree that does not foresee that a woman, rather than a heterosexual couple, would seek artificial insemination.

Is 'Bisexual Lighting' a New Cinematic Phenomenon?

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/863/39826794920_3ed1d4a324.jpg)Film fans have long discussed the representation of sexuality and gender on screen.  However a meme focusing on how light is increasingly used to portray bisexuals has gained traction on social media.

Many LGBT people have been sharing examples of TV programs, films and music videos to highlight the development of so-called "bisexual lighting" - characterized by the simultaneous use of neon pink and blue light on screen.

The under-representation of bisexuality on screen has been debated for a number of years, and some have seized on bisexual lighting as an empowering visual device.  Reflecting this, the Pantone Color Institute named Ultra Violet as its color of the year for 2018, referencing the influence of "Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix".  But is it really a tool to represent bisexuality, or are people reading too much into neon-tinged stylization?

Trump Administration's Latest Blow to Transgender Americans

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/815/27147547868_b95c1f8135.jpg)The Trump administration’s campaign to make life more difficult for transgender Americans entered a new phase this weekend. On Saturday, according to the New York Times, the administration announced that it would gut an anti-discrimination statute when it comes to health care access for transgender patients.

The rule, passed under the Obama administration in 2016, had prevented health care providers receiving federal financial assistance — including those receiving Medicare and Medicaid payments — from discriminating based on “gender identity.” A recent ruling out of Texas, however, found that segments of the rule were unlawful, opening the door for the Department of Health and Human Services to rewrite the rule.

The new rule, per the Times, has been submitted to the White House, which is currently “reviewing the proposed rule on ‘nondiscrimination in health programs’.” While the details of the new rule remain unclear, the Trump administration will likely allow health insurers to prevent coverage of treatments that help a person transition to another gender.
