I got a 43" 4K TV with the Dolby Vision (and HDR) enhancements (Walmart Black Friday Special) in late November, it turned out my HDMI active splitter was blocking the Dolby Vision signal, a direct HDMI connection between my Sony UHD player and my new TV allows Dolby Vision to work properly.

AFAIK, Dolby Vision (and HDR) have to be manually added to older movies, Brokeback Mountain does look more realistic, especially the outdoor scenes.

Anyone else compared the Brokeback Blu-ray and the new Brokeback 4K UHD Blu-ray?

Brokeback Mountain Aged Well Over The Last 20 Years, Solidifying Heath Ledger’s Legacy

Johann Wilfred

By 2025, it will be 20 years since this masterpiece of a movie was released. Powerful in emotion and meaning, Brokeback Mountain has depth that can knock you off your feet and leave you breathless.

Based off a short story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain tells the story of two cowboys who have a romantic relationship but find themselves smothered by the conservative attitudes of the American South in the 60s.

“Brokeback Got Us Good, Didn’t It?”

Paul Klein

Pop quiz hotshot, at the 78th Annual Academy Awards in 2005 the nominees for Best Picture were: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck., and Munich. Of those five which won the award? The smart money would say it was the one that has stayed in our collective consciousness for fifteen years, but no, Brokeback Mountain, the sure favourite to win, was beaten by Paul Haggis' Crash. Of it's not insubstantial eight nominations, Brokeback Mountain did end up winning three – Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay (Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana), and Best Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla).

In the years that have followed since the release of the film the word “Brokeback” has become a shorthand for films, or indeed, situations, that have either homoerotic undertones or are flat out homosexual in nature. But the basics of the film being a gay romance between two cowboys belies the legacy of the film. Yes, it's true that the film is indeed about two cowboys who, in 1960s Wyoming, fall in love while working on the titular mountain, but the film offers a much more subtle story than two men on horses having sex.

^^^ Both worthy reads!   Thanks for posting!    And YES the film has aged very well and likely will remain prominent in the public's collective memory long after the last person forgets about that other film....   V.

‘Brokeback Mountain’: More than 20 years later, the film and short story redefine queerness

By Olivia Popp - May 4, 2018

Much of my interest in alterity and otherness stems from personal identity, and so many of my pursuits have investigated the concept. Nevertheless, I have explored the concepts of alterity mostly through science fiction, so upon rewatching “Brokeback Mountain” and re-reading Anne Proulx’s short story upon which the film is based (both the original New Yorker version and the slightly expanded Proulx short story collection “Close Range” version), I stumbled upon alterity as discussed through queerness. Both Matthew Bolton’s “The Ethics of Alterity: Adapting Queerness in ‘Brokeback Mountain” and Richard Block’s “‘I’m nothin. I’m nowhere’: Echoes of Queer Messianism in ‘Brokeback Mountain’” approach themes of queerness in the short story and the film through a lens of otherness and alienation.
