It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember thinking that Jack looked thoughtful...like he realized he was the one Ennis had talked to after not having anyone to talk to in so long...and maybe that's when he first started to fall in love...

then he did the rodeo thing to get him to laugh...

Yes....that's a good explanation....but I do think it's a sad little scene....till Jack starts goofing around.

The scene where Ennis and Jack are drinking coffee and Ennis' talking about how his brother and sister raised him. Then Jack looks at Ennis and says "Friend...thats more words than you spoke in the past two weeks". Ennis' reply is "Hell....thats the most I spoke in a year."

There's a look on Jacks face which could only be described as deep sadness and a silence at this statement made by Ennis.  Why ?
Was he sad for Ennis ....all those lonely days and nights......or himself ? Reconciling in his mind " this is our life " ?
I always notice that silence and sad gaze by Jack....and I'm never sure if I have got it worked out right.

This scene was so tender and sweet I thought.  It brought out a bit of a smile on Ennis.  He looks so cute when he smiles.  Jack has a breathtaking smile.

His rodeo dance is one of the very few scenes in the film that make me actually laugh out loud, no matter how many times I watch it. The other one is when Ennis shoots the elk and Jack goes "Ooooeee! Yeah!" and they shove each other.
It seems there are quite a lot of people who don't like the 'oooeee' bit (I've read some pretty mixed comments on that scene in various threads), but I find it cute. It shows Jack's playfulness.

It's funny, because I don't really like Jack's fooling around - not quite sure why. Perhaps I feel a little embarrassed for him :D. But I LOVE the elk scene and the shoving! Is it the first time we see them touching? Can't remember.

I think that is  the first time they touch, Sara.

Why should you feel embarrassered for Jack's rodeo dance? There's no-one there to see him but Ennis... oh and us of course  ;)  :D

That scene is subtle insight into Jack, especially interacting with Ennis in a happy moment - the most notable being the reunion / staircase.   It was a nice touch.  Same feeling of team accomplishment when winning a game...  Cheers, V.

Oh, I absolutely love the scene generally - it's just that goofing around scene that I'm very slightly uncomfortable with. It just doesn't quite seem like Jack to me. Just a personal impression :).

Jack is so silly and so cute. Jake Gyllenhaal really brought a sense of care-free life into the character in that scene in my opinion.  You have to have some humor in  the film because of some of its more tragic themes.

I do agree with this, if it had been a film that was 100% tragic, it wouldn't have worked so well.  Ennis had some humorous scenes as well, specifically about the harmonica.

A scene in which Ennis, tragically, was never gonna be able to translate the comfort and ease he felt with Jack beyond the bounds of Brokeback.  :'(

Too true.  There is a sharp contrast of scenes of Ennis anywhere else, and how he is on Brokeback.

Ennis truly seems comfortable on Brokeback Mountain after he and Jack get to know each other. Ya know what else?  I think Ennis was totally checking Jack out when he was riding horseback to go look after the sheep but what the hell, who wouldn't want to check Jack out?
