"Maple Palm" will be released this September.  It is a story of a lesbian couple of fifteen years, one of them being an illegal immigrant. According to the press release, it's already being referred to by some as "Brokeback Hooters".

I was reading in Variety about a forthcoming movie that will be dramatic, real, and biographical.  What is going to distinguish and make the movie interesting is because it is true.

The title is "Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story."  Emile Griffith was a boxer who fought Billy "Kid" Paret in a nationally televised match.  Emile Griffith fatally punched Paret to death because Paret called him a "homosexual."

Think:  Raging Homophobic Bull.

NOT The Da Vinci Code.

I just saw a commercial, which was really well done, and might have gotten me excited, except for three awful things hanging over it:

- it's based on that book, which i have not read, but from all accounts is really bad,
- it was made by Ron Howard
- it stars Tom Hanks.

pitty about that last one. i used to like him. i guess i still do, i just can't scrape up any interest in seeing him. at least in something like this, but kind of in anything. what did he to do his image?

too many ghastly-looking films in a row that turned me off? too many trips to the plate with the spielberg huckster team? i think the last thing i saw him in was Castaway. blech. what a hollow experience that was.

I kinda liked Castaway -- not extraordinarily deep stuff or a great work of art, but fun. "Wilson!"  :D

I loved Castaway and I am really looking forward to the DaVinci Code!

I have never heard a bad review on the book, or heard a person say it was bad!  The book was excellent, I think last I checked it had sold 40 million copies.

I found the book entertaining but light weight - kinda like reading a murder mystery.  It's not great literature, more like candy for the brain.
(but gotta say, selling 40 million copies doesn't necessarily make it good - just popular ;))
never enough time, never enough....

Some fictional characters are less fictional than others

I think it is a light read in alot of respects, which is probably why so many people have read it. But going by those reviews (in the link) it has been very well received by critics.   ;)

Clearly, we inhabit different universes.

Of course I was exagerating when I said by "all" accounts it was bad. I'm sure it got some good reviews. But everyone I know or read who has read it had pure contempt for it. (Salon's former book editor Laura Miller, who I love, did a great piece enumerating how awful it was.)

I've been meaning to check it out just to join the debate, but can't spare the time.

But I do find it interesting that we inhabit worlds so distinct that yours is filled with people who love it and mine with people disgusted by it.

At least we have brokeback in common.

Not quite! lol

And yes I have to say it is the first book in I don't know how long that everyone seemed to be reading and everyone enjoyed.  Maybe your friends are just into more serious literature.  And I am sure alot of deeply religious people weren't too fond of it.

It has all made the author a rich man that is for sure!

True statement. If you went by the advertising on the author's website, it would appear that it has been very well received by critics. And if you went by the Sorority Boys' website, I'm sure it looks like a well-reviewed film.

Also interesting that Brown didn't link to any of the reviews on his site.

Nope. They just thought it was awful.

God, maybe I can find time for this book, so I can chime in with my own thoughts. But I doubt it. So much to read.

You could probably get through it quite quickly, it is an easy read.   But I know what you mean I have a stack of books here just waiting.  :P

no, any of the reviews. (were there bad reviews listed? that would be odd.)

am i missing something? i saw no links. just brief passages, which may or may not be followed by huge buts . . .

it's customary to link to excerpted material on the web, so the reader can see the full story.

unless, of course, you don't want them to see the rest.

---

ruh rho. i think we might be leering off topic. we better wrap this book shit up.

Oh I see what you mean, you would want to see the whole review.  Yea I guess you would have to type in the critic and the name of the book and get the whole scoop/review.

I tried that with the first one:

http://www.danbrown.com/novels/davinci_code/nytimes.html

And I must be losing it, because I typed in JANET MASLIN (NY Times) and then typed Brokeback Mountain! lol

Okay back to the topic at hand!  :)
