When it comes to history, I really like when an author places the event they're writing about in a broader context. A really good example of that is Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, by Reza Aslan. Aslan discusses the history of Judea and Galilee from 100 years before the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth through 100 years after his ministry.
