When it comes to history, I really like when an author places the event they're writing about in a broader context. A really good example of that is Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, by Reza Aslan. Aslan discusses the history of Judea and Galilee from 100 years before the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth through 100 years after his ministry.

In my ongoing habit of reading decades old gay lit (books bought for 99 cents at a thrift store), I recently completed  Someone Like You, by Timothy James Beck (copyright 2006).

It's a fun book. If you can get your hands on a copy, I can recommend it for light reading, something to take your mind off other stuff.

The characters are a varied bunch of females, males, gay and straight, all denizens of a fictitious mega-mall and upscale hotel complex, the Mall of the Universe, located in Terre Haute, Indiana, and clearly inspired by the Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minnesota.

It's a shame that (as far as I know) no one ever made this book into a gay dramedy because it would be perfect for it--or maybe just an out-and-out comedy, though not a slapstick/farce kind of comedy. The story has bad guys (who get their comeuppance in the end) and good guys, and all's well that ends well.  :)  Like I said, light relaxing reading.

(There's also a lot of name dropping of upscale clothing brands.  ::) )

I just heard that gay writer Felice Picano has passed away, yesterday. A true legend. I read almost all of his books, very important to me.

It's surprising how important some people become in our lives. What a wonderful impression they leave on us.

Absolutely. Always unexpectedly, often a surprise.

At the moment I am reading "Sonny Boy"  by Al Pacino. His life story..so far !
I know....not a "highbrow" read...but it is entertaining. Better than most of
the life story books I have read. I'm not a "book snob" !!!
One of the best I read was "The Moons a Balloon" by David Niven a good few
 years ago. Very very funny.
I remember lying on the beach reading it, howling with laughter' with everyone around slowly moving away from me.
So far as I know both of these books mentioned are autobiographies.

As a life long science fiction reader I am always looking for new material to read. As a kid I got my hands on an Amazing Stories and other early American publications and was instantly fascinated. It's probably how I learned English at a young age as most of these were not available in any other language. From magazines I quickly went to books and have never stopped.

A gay friend, also into SciFi, recommended this unknown author, Robert Windale, to me a couple of weeks back. The SciFi is good, he says, it's Action-Adventure, but the explicit gay sex is quite stimulating...

I got the first two, as it is one story, then quickly got the third, which I am now reading. It's very entertaining and reads easily. It's not hard-scifi, with lots of physics and such, just a good read, easy to understand. I got the 4th one this morning. The hero being mostly gay, but also bisexual, not to mention of Middle Eastern origins, certainly puts a spin on things. I can only hope Amazon doesn't go all anti-LGBTQIA+ and filters this, and others, out...

Definitely recommended for both the story and certainly the fun bits...  ;D  :P

Thanks Vic. I'll definitely look for this as your review sounds really positive. I too am always looking for good meaty science fiction books. I am an avid reader, much more so now due to the toxic world in which we live, (to keep my mind occupied so I don't dwell on the toxicity)  so I am always on the lookout for good series books in which to get involved in. Thanks again!

I haven’t had a chance to look through all the thread but just wondered if anyone has read “Red,White & Royal Blue”? it’s an LGBTQ+ love story between the first son of the US and the Prince of England, I love it so much (it was also made into a film in 2023 which I’m equally obsessed with)
Heath is actually mentioned in the book as he is one of the main characters favourite actors! (my beloved Henry has excellent taste in actors and he loves A Knight’s Tale)

I’m still amazed that my favourite actor is mentioned by my favourite character in my favourite book!

I could talk about it for hours so if anyone wants to chat

Yes, I've have and read the book, Marz. And seen them movie numerous times. It's one I like to revisit.

I just read today that ey are doing a sequel. The same two actors for the leads and the same actress who plays the president's chief of staff. Not sure about anyone else. It's still in the planning stages.

Auntie this makes me so happy, the film is one of my favourites!
Yes they are, it’s so exciting. And Uma Thurman, Clifton Collins (Alex’s dad) and possibly Ellie Bamber (Henry’s sister Beatrice)
Nick has 7 projects in various stages of production at the moment including the sequel.
I still can’t believe the sequel is real. We are getting Alex & Henry back!
Obviously the new film is not based on a book but I know Casey is involved which is a good sign
