The Real Reason Heath Ledger Licked His Lips So Much In The Dark Knight

By Adam Cetorelli - July 6, 2021

Heath Ledger is famous for his dedicated portrayals of a wide range of characters, from the closeted gay cowboy Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain" to the high school heartthrob Patrick Verona in "10 Things I Hate About You." However, Ledger's most iconic role was undoubtedly his performance as the Joker in the 2008 movie "The Dark Knight," thanks to his fresh take on the classic Batman supervillain.

His Joker is easily the most memorable character in the film, surely contributing to the incredible staying power of the movie, which remains popular to this day. According to Box Office Mojo, "The Dark Knight" would gross over $1 billion worldwide, although Ledger himself would not see it reach its immense success, as he tragically died in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose, several months before its release.

Heath Ledger's Joker is full of idiosyncrasies — the twitching, the grumbling yet shrill voice, the very intentional blinking — idiosyncrasies which the actor kept track of in a diary dedicated to his Joker persona. But perhaps the most distinct characteristic of Ledger's Joker is his incessant lip-licking, which the actor uses almost as punctuation, finishing many of his twisted remarks with a swift smack of the lips or by gliding his tongue over the corners of his mouth.

Rufus Sewell on close friendship with Heath Ledger 20 years after filming A Knight’s Tale

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh - Tuesday 20 Jul 2021

(Larushka) It’s 20 years since A Knight’s Tale — can you believe it?

(Rufus)  I am very fond of that film and those memories. Me and Heath [Ledger] were very close and we did have a riotous good time.

I learned that a hangover in armour is not a pleasant experience. I would pour water into it, and you would see steam come out.

And working out how to smoke through my visor, that was a feat of engineering. These are the problems an actor has.

Tiny But Timeless Details In Heath Ledger Movies

By Mahima Parmar

Heath Ledger’s name is synonym to the famous villain of Batman; the Joker who  is the most decorated negative character and has so many fans all over the globe. When Heath Ledger was first announced to rope in as the Joker, fans were not quite pleased with the casting and of course Heath Ledger proved them so wrong and how!

He received an Oscar too. And his final role as The Joker was life changing not only for his legacy but also for us. His performance was so strong that it was even respected by the Marvel fans.
Joaquin Phoenix too, blew us away with his role in and as Joker but it is impossible to miss Heath Ledger.

And there are so many other films of his which were so good especially films like 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain!

These films of Heath Ledger have their own small details that make the movies timeless.

The fans have found these impressive details in the films like The Dark Knight and A Knight’s Tale which remind us that Heath won’t be forgotten ever.
Here are some of those details:

How Heath Ledger’s family want you to remember him

Siobhan Duck - September 4, 2021

Once seen as the realm for “brainy” older audiences, documentaries have evolved over time into a high-quality artform covering subjects and topics as diverse as its viewers. Acclaimed documentary I Am Heath Ledger, a look into the life of the beloved late Australian actor, is just one of many award-winning programs on Foxtel’s new documentary channel, Fox Docos.

With hundreds upon hundreds of hours of top-tier content to watch, there’s something for everyone – whatever your interest.

His documentary on late Australian actor Heath Ledger opened to widespread critical acclaim but there was one review that mattered most to co-director Derik Murray: that of the grieving Ledger family. Ledger’s parents, Kim and Sally, along with sister Kate, had placed tremendous trust in Murray’s team, sharing anecdotes and precious home movies for I Am Heath Ledger.

“[Ledger’s family] were in Australia and we were in Canada, so we had provided a link to the film. Not the actual finished film, but one that was in the advanced stage... with the story all in place,” Murray tells The Binge Guide.

Dark Knight Alum David Dastmalchian Shares Sweet Memories Of Working With Heath Ledger

By Dirk Libbey

The Dark Knight is, without question, one of the most important comic book movies ever made. It is generally regarded as the best Batman movie made to date, and that’s impressive considering no comic book hero has quite the big screen history. However, the movie took on absolutely mythic proportions due to it being released after the death of Heath Ledger, and David Dastmalchian, who worked alongside Ledger in the movie, still thinks about what a special experience that was.

Before David Dastmalchian was appearing in movies from Ant-Man to The Suicide Squad to Dune, he appeared as one of the Joker’s thug’s in The Dark Knight. It was one of Dastmalchian’s first big screen roles, and speaking with Looper, the actor talked about what a great actor, and what a great person, Heath Ledger was, saying...

Have just found out they have a model of Heath in Madam Tussauds
in Sydney.
Why is it that only THEY have his model and of which it seems is a really good
likeness and is the only one ?
Madam Tussauds in UK have people of all walks of life in there...plus the fact
Heath got an Oscar for one of the most talked about characters of this century
in movie land so far. We SHOULD have one.
How do these wax figures get nominated to be in ALL of the wax theatres ?
Creepy you may say....but I would love to see one of him....just to get a
general idea of what it would be like to stand next to him  :(
So......come on Sydney do we have to have your permission to have one...
or perhaps his family ? Just to tell them ......he has fans here who loved him
too.  :'(
Wanting him to come back... before anyone notices
part of the world has not moved...since he left.

How Heath Ledger’s Joker transformed the superhero movie

Calum Russell - 04/05/22

“Oh, hee-hee, aha. Ha, ooh, hee, ha-ha, ha-ha,” Heath Ledger’s Joker cackled as he sauntered into Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight, instilling a sense of instant threat as he turned the tide of superhero moviemaking. Sporting the kind of eerie makeup you would imagine seeing on a clown in the process of a nervous breakdown, Ledger would change the credibility of blockbuster cinema the very same year that Marvel would properly kick off their invincible franchise.

Of course, comic-book movies had long been around before the premiere of both Iron Man and The Dark Knight in 2008, though, superhero cinema, pre-Millennium, was a strange beast. Featuring a melting pot of different styles, approaches and tones that included the sweet, camp flavours of Batman Forever and Superman IV, as well as the grungy horror of 1997’s Spawn, it was a landscape of little thought, transferring the comic book image directly onto celluloid.

Innovation would soon come in the form of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Bryan Singer’s X-Men, with both franchises inspiring key ingredients that would soon become integral to the identity of superhero movies. Creating a blueprint for what we see in modern Marvel movies, particularly the smart, quippy humour akin to Guardians of the Galaxy, if Raimi and Singer laid the groundwork, Christopher Nolan did a lot of the heavy lifting.

Baz Luhrmann Says Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal Auditioned For ‘Moulin Rouge’

Ned Booth - July 1, 2022

Baz Luhrmann‘s latest movie, the dazzling and operatic rock ‘n roll biopic “Elvis,” is in theaters now. And it’s wow-ing critics and audiences alike.  Austin Butler‘s lead performance as Elvis Presley is the highlight, but Luhrmann’s inimitable penchant for spectacle is a close second. The movie knocked the blockbuster juggernaut “Top Gun: Maverick” out of the top box office slot its opening weekend, taking in $68.3 million worldwide. So, Luhrmann’s new movie has audiences all shook up, as it were.

But bad puns aside, Luhrmann’s career has been successful for decades now, and Butler is just the most recent young star whose career the director helped catapult into the Hollywood stratosphere. And on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, Luhrmann revealed a couple of the industry’s most iconic stars who almost made it into earlier films of his like “Moulin Rouge!” and “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet.” “I form relationships with the actors, and they go on further,” said Luhrmann, “The young actors who auditioned for “Romeo + Juliet,” at least two-thirds of them are icons now. That’s how long ago it was. Actors came in and showed me they could thing.”

When Horowitz alluded that those audition tapes for “Moulin Rouge” are amazing, Luhrmann said, “Yeah, honestly. When I think about Jake Gyllenhaal, for example, who was very close, very young for the role, but he can really sing. He’s a really great musical artist.” Gyllenhaal would have just entered his twenties when auditioned for “Moulin Rouge!,” and he’s certainly an A-List star now. And Luhrmann had another, more tragic example, too. “I mean, very, very sadly, Heath [Ledger], of course.” Ledger passed away in January 2008 after an accidental overdose of medications. He was 28 when he died, so roughly the same age as Gyllenhall when they would have auditioned for the 2001 musical, too.

                                                ^^^^

I really wish ....hope ......and pray that at sometime in the near
future....they will show the auditions of Heath and Jake for
the movie "Moulin Ruge". It would be wonderful seeing our
boys before they were really well established stars.
Here's hoping !
