When to See the 'Strawberry Moon,' the Last Supermoon of 2021
The last supermoon of 2021—the Strawberry Moon—is poised to light up skies later this week.

Sam Blum - 06/21/2021

If you’re an avid stargazer, June alone has been a crowded month in an otherwise busy year of celestial events. A solar eclipse, a planetary conjunction, and an asteroid careening within a reasonably close distance of the planet have added a nice bit of cosmic intrigue as the days get warmer and longer.

When it comes to supermoons, however, the book is soon to close on 2021, as the last supermoon of the year is poised to light up the sky later this week for three days, from June 24 to 26. Befitting the onset of summer and the general practice of giving moons nicknames, this particular moon is called the Strawberry Supermoon, though it sadly won’t be strawberry-hued.

It’s either the last full moon of spring, or the first full moon of summer, depending upon your seasonal allegiances. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this moon derives its names from a variety of Native American tribes, which associate this time of year with particular “June-bearing” fruit, such as strawberries (at least in certain parts of North America). Every 20 years, the Strawberry Moon coincides with Summer Solstice, which is a nice cosmic coincidence.

Tropical Storm Elsa: Latest forecast track, timing, how much rain and wind will hit N.J.

By Len Melisurgo

Tropical Storm Elsa continues to drift north across the eastern United States on Thursday and is taking aim at New Jersey, where it is expected to dump several inches of rain, generate big waves and dangerous surf conditions and pound the Jersey Shore with strong winds.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for five New Jersey counties and a flash flood watch is active in all of the state’s 21 counties.

Here’s a look at the storm’s timing, rainfall projections, wind speed, warnings and advisories as of late Thursday morning.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Tropical Storm Elsa was moving across northern South Carolina and into North Carolina, with its center located about 80 miles southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina and about 500 miles southwest of Atlantic City.

Lightning strikes kill 76 people in India; some victims were taking selfies

Several people reportedly taking selfies near a historical fort in northern India were among 76 killed by lightning strikes during the early stages of the annual monsoon season, officials said Monday.

Deadly lightning strikes are common in the vast Asian nation during the June-September deluge, which bring respite from the summer heat across the northern Indian plains.

Of the 76 killed, at least 23 people died in the mostly desert state of Rajasthan, including a dozen who were watching the storm cross Jaipur city from watch towers near the famous 12th-century Amer Fort late Sunday, a state disaster department official told AFP.

"It was already raining when the people were there. They huddled in the towers as the rainfall intensified," a senior Jaipur police officer, Saurabh Tiwari, added.

'100-year flood' hits parts of Bucks County as storm dumps torrential rain

By Christie Ileto, 6abc Digital Staff and Dann Cuellar

BENSALEM, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Parts of our region were swamped by a series of storms on Monday that the National Weather Service called a rare "flash flood emergency."

According to forecasters, Monday's storms dumped 6 to 10 inches of rain in just 3 to 4 hours, swelling the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Burlington County, New Jersey.

"Widespread and life-threatening flash flooding is occurring. This is an extremely dangerous situation," the weather service's Monday afternoon warning said. "Do not venture out unless it is an emergency or to move to higher ground."

The torrential rain flooded neighborhoods throughout Bucks County. The areas greatest impacted by the storm received 6"-10" of rain in around 3-4 hours. According to the NWS, this is estimated to be a 100-Year Flood-- meaning each year there is about a 1% chance of seeing this much rain.

Northwestern Germany, after months and weeks of torrential rainfall.

Last night yet another inundation caused a major catastrophe: Dozens of people dead, dozens missing. Villages cut off from the rest of the world, houses and streets destroyed, cellars flooded, people waiting for evacuation on their roofs.
