Singer-songwriter Mary McBride brings "The Way Home Tour" to New Orleans

Singer and songwriter Mary McBride couldn’t have arrived in Louisiana at a more appropriate time to begin her “The Way Home Tour.”

This incomparable place we call home is in on our minds constantly, as we worry about the Gulf oil spill and the start of hurricane season.

“I have lots of family in New Orleans,” she said. “I always try to make it the first part of my tours.”

Her latest tour, which celebrates the release of her album “The Way Home” on June 22, is different. It brings her and her band to “places that people call home,” including homeless shelters, homes for people with mental and physical disabilities, a veterans hospital in California, a farm worker community in Washington State.

Pride Films and Plays

We are excited about fine writing for films like ‘Brokeback Mountain’, ‘Milk’, and “A Single Man” to name a few. And we hope to foster excellent writing with our Great Gay Screenplay Contest, produced in association with Chicago Filmmakers. Plays with GLBTQ themes have had a major impact on our cultural identity. To remind both our artists and our audiences of great gay writing throughout history, we launched our play reading series "Five Decades of Great Gay Plays" in May and June 2010. Featuring works from the '60s to the '00s, the series included Mart Crowley's Boys in the Band, Lanford Wilson's Fifth of July, William M. Hoffman's As Is, and Jonathan Harvey's Beautiful Thing, and Richard Greenberg's Take Me Out.

In August and September, we explore the “Great Plays of Terrence McNally” including The Lisbon Traviata, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Corpus Christi, The Ritz, and the Chicago premiere of one of his newest plays Some Men.

Later we will be doing staged readings of great screenplays including Brokeback Mountain, Milk, Gods and Monsters, and A Single Man to name a few, and we are looking for help to put this series together.

And we have gotten many requests for readings of works with lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered themes. Anyone interested in tackling these projects?

Explore the Reading Series page for details.

We foster excellent writing important to the GLBTQ community and relevant to our world with contests, including the Great Gay Screenplay Contest, produced in association with Chicago Filmmakers.

Upcoming contests will focus on GLBTQ musicals and plays, and a special contest for women writing plays or screenplays with lesbian characters or themes. You will find information on our Contest Page.

Though based in Chicago, we are working with professionals, academics, and people with interest in GLBTQ issues from around the globe. Please sign our mailing list so we can keep you updated on upcoming projects and deadlines.

I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas at pridefilmsandplays@gmail.com. And we are always looking for volunteers for projects big and small.

Thanks for stopping by.

Artistic Director

About Annie Proulx Lecture June 25th CANCELLED
Chekhov Cultural Center, Moscow

Due to a problem with the visa -- not, it seems, by the Russians, but by the US people in Washington, DC -- Annie Proulx will not be coming to Moscow, so the lecture to ELE on June 25 has had to be cancelled.
The host of ELE apologizes for any inconvenience, and/or dashed hopes.

Laboratory Theater presents
GIT ALONG LIL DOGGIES
http://vimeo.com/8540538
http://www.laboratorytheater.org

"Brokeback Mountain" meets "Naked Lunch" in Laboratory Theater's newest work, a cowboy dance-drama about the spiritual imprint of the windswept landscape of the American west. In an impressionistic narrative inspired by the work of William S. Burroughs and Annie Proulx, two outlaws conjure the violent forces of nature through sex-magic to take revenge on an old adversary. Commingling elements of country-western line dance and gay pornography, the performance
unfolds against a projected video landscape of repainted Marlboro cigarette TV commercials and within an immersive soundscape incorporating contemporary new age music for pedal steel guitar.

Directed by Yvan Greenberg, with Corey Dargel, Sheila Donovan, Oleg Dubson, and Wil Smith.

The passion of the tango in Seoul

There is a famous saying: “Life is like the tango: sad, sensual, sexy, violent and quiet.”

The next two weeks will bring two opportunities to confirm that for yourself: a show by the electro-tango ensemble Bajofondo and a performance by the flamenco troupe Nuevo Ballet Espanol with star Spanish dancers Rojas and Rodriguez.

Bajofondo, named after the Spanish word for “underground,” will headline its first concert in Seoul on Saturday, two years after it debuted here at the annual Ulsan World Music Festival.

“The combination of passionate and sensual tango and electronic music will be synchronized to catchy video screen images, providing the audience with the chance to experience the ‘revolution of tango’,” said Eternity, the concert’s agency in Seoul, in a release.

Their music has gained attention for creating a hybrid tango with electronic samples and hard beats on the one hand, and live orchestras and rock and funk riffs on the other. The music is often compared to the Paris-based Gotan Project.

Consisting of eight Argentinian and Uruguayan musicians, Bajofondo is led by Oscar-winning composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Bajofondo will perform at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 at AX-Korea in northeastern Seoul. Tickets are priced at 88,000 won ($74) for all seats. For English booking and inquiries, call (010) 4265-5352 or e-mail eternityseoul@gmail.com.

“Sangre Flamenca” will be staged from Sept. 8 to 12 at the Universal Arts Center in northeastern Seoul. Tickets cost between 55,000 won and 150,000 won. Visit www.superflamenco.com for information

A film screening and discussion of the film "Brokeback Mountain." Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Heath Ledger and Jack Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, remarkably moving performances in a "movie that is destined to become one of the great classics of our time."
