News and Current Events - 2011
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:06:07 PM »
A new thread for breaking news and current events. It has been great discussions with everyone. Keep it up!

Lyle suggested that we start the new year with a brand spankin' new thread, so here it is!

Sorry I am one day late!

I will leave the old thread unlocked for a day or so if folks want to quote.

Please bring your new discussions here!

Major earthquake strikes central Chile

By the CNN Wire Staff

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the central coastal area of Chile on Sunday, some 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Temuco, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury.

The quake, which stuck around 5:20 p.m. (3:20 p.m. ET), was felt as far away as Santiago, roughly 595 km (370 miles) north of where the USGS said the quake occurred. The earthquake was some 17 km (10.5 miles) deep, the USGS said.

Michael Steele Calls DADT Repeal 'Dangerous'; Opposition To Gay Marriage Not Anti-Gay

By Carlos Santoscoy
Published: January 01, 2011

In fielding questions about gay marriage, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele called repeal of the military's ban on open gay service, known as “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” “dangerous.”

RNC voting members will gather later this month to decide whether Steele keeps his job or is replaced by another candidate.

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), an opponent of gay marriage, has interviewed leading candidates via Skype and posted their responses on its website. All of the candidates interviewed agree with the group on the issue.

In his interview, Steele, who's previously made headlines by calling civil unions “crazy” and arguing that gay marriage would be bad for small business, said that he respects former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman but disagrees with his position on gay marriage. (Mehlman came out gay in 2010 to fundraise for the group supporting repeal of California's gay marriage ban, Proposition 8.)

Read: Landmark Ugandan Pro-Gay Court Ruling

(snip)

As I mentioned earlier, today a Ugandan court ruled in favor of a group of gay plaintiffs suing a tabloid for publishing the names of the country's alleged "Top Homos" in October.

And here's a fresh press release (PDF) from Uganda's Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights & Constitutional Law applauding the ruling.

Judith Miller telling someone should check facts is laughable. Wasn't she the one who help W with is war efforts and persuade the American people that Iraq had helped with 911 attack and helped out CI Agent Valerie Plame? Sad, sad, sad that people still buy her crap.
