I would like to see his evidence that having gay soldiers is "dangerous." :D

Dangerous to his prejudices.

Well, my hometown, Norfolk, finally is the first 5 minutes of the evening network news.  Why? Capt. Owen Honors, commanding the carrier Enterprise, boosted morale with some semi-raunchy videos.  The sailors loved them.  As for anti-gay slurs, these are military guys, and when gay-spoofing, it is not clear if these are slurs or balancing off the goofiness.  I hardly think it's anti-gay when they have 2 guys soaping each other up in a shower, and Honors just referring to his aide as "that gay boy".  It's stress release. And his career has been ruined because the local rag, "The Virginian-Pilot" can't break a real story and so does this.
Anyway, a lesser video, Navy Numa Numa, can be found on YouTube.  It's silly and partly boring, (unless you like the music and guys dancing), but, towards the end has some brief gay-playing,without offensive remarks.

So, Norfolk finally hits the big time?  Blah.  There are dead birds dropping from the sky all over Arkansas. Now THAT'S fodder for the nutty network lead stories. NOT Navy guys spoofing stuff.  Opinions always differ, but Honors is beloved by his crew and doesn't deserve this. Once again, "The Virginian-Pilot" rates the award for the stupidest newspaper in this country.

The Pentagon needs to grow up

This is Captain Owens of the Enterprise.  Yes, some parts of his videos are a little raunchy.  They were in-house, and boosted morale for the sailors.  Above, beside him, is the now famous stuffed parrot, which he wiggled as in, well, self-relieving.  Big deal.  There were a lot of feathers all over the floor.
Navy guys, on the ships, work out, play video games, and do just about everything they can do to keep sane, being away from their families for 6 months or longer. An officer's career should not be ended over a freaking stuffed sex parrot, which was never meant to be broadcast coast-to-coast.  Don't we have more important problems?

Judith Miller telling someone should check facts is laughable. Wasn't she the one who help W with is war efforts and persuade the American people that Iraq had helped with 911 attack and helped out CI Agent Valerie Plame? Sad, sad, sad that people still buy her crap.

**BBT:  Miller's the one!  One of the largest of bush's army of criminal liars - actually saying "someone should check facts".  Her ???
Yes, it is truly unbelievable that people still buy her (their) crap.**

Once again, the question is -- why is this news?

I saw the headline a couple days ago -- about dirty videos in the navy.  My god, I hate AOL junk headlines.  It was right there along with whatever Kim Kardashian is doing lately.  I wondered -- does ANYBODY actually care about this?

Just because it's now on TV news doesn't mean it's important.  It means it is entertaining, in the judgment of the producers.

Maybe they are right, maybe they are wrong.  But I am looking to get out of these newsfeed services, they are just so ridiculous and annoying.

That's what I was mostly stirred up about.  It's not like it was the Tailgate scandal.  But I sat there, stupefied, as it went from the lead story on the evening news, to two stand-up reports from the Pentagon, and then to commentary.  Five minutes over a stuffed parrot? Well, ok, there were some other doobies.
Here in Norfolk, Captain Honors has nearly complete support.  He was Exec officer at the time (these videos are 4 years old!) and it was his job to boost morale. Now, he has been suspended as Captain of the carrier, which is leaving, shortly, and it is very dumb to send those sailors off with all this furor and somebody new.
Again, I blame it all on the Norfolk newspaper.  There ought to be an award for worst in the country.  It would win, every time.

In the interests of following up:  the skits on the USS Enterprise were no worse than those on Saturday Night Live, and, if anything, those military officers in the Pentagon, who have escalated statements from "humorous skits" to, later, "ongoing investigation", should themselves be investigated.

Above is actress Glen Close, holding the sex parrot in question, (or its replacement after the somewhat vigorous erotic activity....the video does show feathers everywhere on the floor). She was visiting the carrier in late 2006.  I hardly think she would have held the parrot unless she did, herself, find the quirky skits acceptable.
What is it going to take to get the military's attention?  They do nothing over the pressuring of Air Force Academy students to adopt a fundamentalist Christian commitment (or else), and the forcing of soldiers at a base in Virginia to attend a Protestant denomination's church.....but they are ruining a decent man's career over spoofs and hi-jinks?
Has Don't Ask Don't Tell been replaced with: don't kid about sex with stuffed parrots?  We are at war.  People who have no sense of priorities and balance, need to go.  I would trust Captain Honor's judgment in combat much more than that of a zombie, brain-washed, right-wing, evangelical careerist.
My apologies for these posts to those who don't see the point.  We do, in Norfolk. This is an outrage. And the general suggestion from the sailors, that this was all the grudge work of a chaplain with connections to the local-rag-posing-as-a-newspaper, may well be true.

Who runs the military? Trained officers or religious zealots? This issue is very serious, and any investigation should head that way.

This scares me to death. So, women really don't have the same protection under the Constitution according to Scalia, a Supreme Court Justice. Sad in deed.

The equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does not protect against discrimination on the basis of gender or sexual orientation, according to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

In a newly published interview in the legal magazine California Lawyer, Scalia said that while the Constitution does not disallow the passage of legislation outlawing such discrimination, it doesn't itself outlaw that behavior:

Well, the Constitution WAS written by men. White men. Wealthy white men.
In 2010, 606 people (all ages) were accidentally killed by guns.
Almost 3000 teens (15-19) die in traffic accidents a year.
1100 kids under 19 drown each year.
44 kids under 5 died of heat stroke in hot cars in 2013.
HIGH school sports account for 1.2 million trips to the ER annually.

A good piece from someone who gets it:

WikiLeaks' Most Terrifying Revelation: Just How Much Our Government Lies to Us
Wikileaks has shown that our government and military form a 'vast lying machine' that perpetrates mass murder in our name.

Do you believe that it is in Americans' interest to allow a small group of U.S. leaders to unilaterally murder, maim, imprison and/or torture anyone they choose anywhere in the world, without the knowledge let alone oversight of their citizens or the international community? And, despite their proven record of failure to protect America -- from Indochina to Iran to Iraq -- do you believe they should be permitted to clandestinely expand their war-making without informed public debate? If so, you are betraying the principles upon which America was founded, endangering your nation, and displaying a distinctly "unamerican" subservience to unaccountable authority. But if you oppose autocratic power, you are called to support Wikileaks and others trying to limit U.S. Executive Branch mass murder abroad and failure to protect Americans at home.

A Double WTF moment in the news

Michelle Williams Still Has an Unclear Understanding of Heath Ledger’s Death

In a very personal and rare interview, actress Michelle Williams has said that she is still struggling to understand the meaning behind the death of her child Heath Ledger.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The actors fell in love with each other on the set of Brokeback Mountain. Keith won the supporting actor at Oscars while she received a nomination for her role.
