I've been over at TinyKittens on YouTube, the latest mother has given birth.

For those who don't know, TinyKittens (TK) is based in Canada.  They monitor a feral colony, and trap the cats if they're sick.  They treat them and try to domesticate them.  If they can't be domesticated, they spay/neuter them, and return them to the wild.

Any pregnant cats they capture, they keep until they give birth.  They then spay the mother and spay/neuter any kittens, and they adopt out the kittens, and the mother if they are able to tame her.

this most recent birth is quite the story.

The mother (Kiwi) went into labor at 8:30 Tuesday, and TinyKitten's internet feed promptly went out.  TK usually live streams the births.  Turns out the outage was a blessing.

Kiwi went into labor, and had three kittens.  She started to clean herself and seemed to ignore the kittens.  After about an hour, she settled down, and the kittens started to nurse.   A few hours later she left the nest, and went to the litterbox.  While there, she gave birth to number 4, and not long after, number 5.  Shelly (the woman who runs TK) rushed down to the room where the birthing nests are and took kittens 4 & 5 and put them into an incubator to warm them up.  She also tube fed them.  She put them into the nest, and then Kiwi returned to let them nurse.  Suddenly, kittens 6 and 7 were then born.

The whole process took about 16 hours (with Shelly staying awake and watching the whole time to make sure everyone was ok).  Mother Kiwi left the nest in distress and had a bathroom incident.

After all the stress, Kiwi was not returning to the nest, and Shelly let her be, in an effort to help her calm down.   As of 40 minutes ago, Shelly returned Kiwi to the nest, and she immediately settled down and has been cleaning the kittens and letting them nurse.

Everything finally seems to be falling into place, but with kittens, the first few days are crucial, so Shelly and all the volunteers at TK are monitoring the situation.

(note, the link above sometimes switches to another room, so you may not always see the new family there)

What a good charity! And a dramatic birth.

Just to give an update ok Kiwi and her kittens.

The kittens have been named.  Kiwi was named after the New Zealand bird, so the kittens have been named 1: Emu (M, tabby), 2: Cassowary (M, panther), 3: Penguin (M, tuxie), 4: Auk (M, tabby), 5: Dodo (M, tabby), 6: Weka (F, tabby), 7: 🌈Takahe (M, tabby tuxie)

Sad note.  The little rainbow symbol means that kitten #7 (Takahe) crossed the rainbow bridge today.  Shelly did her best, but he was not thriving, and she could see he was going to pass.  She returned him to the nest to spend his remaining time with his siblings and mother, and when it was over, Shelly took him away.

The remaining 6 kittens seem to be thriving, and Kiwi is settling into her role of mother.

Better not let Brian see this. :o Even if the kiwi’s ancestors may have come from Australia. And byou’ve been to NZ too!

Sad that the little kitten died, but probably makes life a little easier for mum.

The TinyKittens location is currently up to three families being cared for.

I posted about Kiwi above.  Her kittens are now almost 8 weeks old.  In another month or so, they will be ready to be adopted.

Kiwi and her kittens are here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwnMKnpPN9M

I neglected to post about a second mother.  Her name is Buttercup, and she gave birth to 4 kittens on May 16th, so her kittens (all doing well) are about 4 weeks old now.

Buttercup and her family had their own feed, and up until two days ago, you could view them online.  However, they've been "bumped"  (TinyKittens only has so many feeds) because just the other day, Pomelo gave birth to her 7 kittens.

Kitten #6 was stillborn, but the remaining kittens all seem to be thriving.  They had to be placed in an incubator, and bottle fed the first day or so, because of Neonatal Isoerythrolysis.  This means that the mother is blood type B, but the kittens are blood type A, and if the kittens nurse in the first 24 hours, it could be fatal to them, as  the anti-A antibodies from from the mother's colostrum will be absorbed directly into the kitten's bloodstream and attack the kitten's red blood cells.

After 12-18 hours, the kittens' guts will close so they are able to digest the anti-A antibodies instead of absorbing them into their bloodstreams. This means it will be safe for non-B kittens to return to mom and nurse as usual after 24 hours.

All surviving 6 kittens were isolated from their mother, and bottle fed safely for the first day.  As of a few hours ago, the 24 hour timeframe passed, and all 6 kittens have been returned to their mother and all are nursing properly now.

You can see Pomelo and her family here.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX44pcfk0Q0
