Survivor Remembers Night of Shooting

Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, and her girlfriend, Mollie Olgin, 19 were a happy couple in Texas.

On June 22nd, sometime around midnight, Mary & Mollie were attacked, each one of them shot in the head and left for dead.  Mary Chapa is recovering in a hospital, Mollie Olgin died as a result of the shooting.

Investigations are ongoing, and a witness has stepped forward to give a description of a suspect.

Authorities say that there is no proof this was a hate crime, and coincidence that the victims of the crime are lesbians.

France to pass gay marriage, adoption law

France's Prime Minister (Jean-Marc Ayrault, pictured left) has said that France's new socialist government was ready to legalize gay marriage and adoption laws.

France's newly elected president (Francois Hollande) took office last month, and his campaign had promised movement on these issues, but offered no time frame to get them done.

Socialists won an absolute majority in the elections, and the Conservatives in the country can do little to stop the actions on these issues, which they've always opposed.

Anne Hathaway talks about Dark Knight

The latest addition to the Batman movie series is the summer's most anticipated release.  One of the actors in the film is Anne Hathaway, seen on the big screen in:  Princess Diaries, Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada, Get Smart, and others.

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Anne Hathaway (Selena Kyle/Catwoman) opens up about the movie set, and working with Christian Bale, Chris Nolan, and the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Anne also goes on to say that even though the movie has costumes, comic mythology and explosions, the key to the movie is realism.

The Dark Knight Returns opens on July 22nd.

'intense' R-rated film 'Take this Waltz'

Actress Michelle Williams has her latest movie in theaters now, Take This Waltz was released on June 29th.

In interviews Michelle has talked about feeling "terrified" in taking on this intense movie.  While it does contain nudity, it was not the nude scenes that frightened her, she has appeared nude in films before.

"It's really talking about aging and femininity and body issues from a woman's point of view, which I was so terrified to do, but also really honored because I haven't really seen it other places, and it feels very real to me,"

She also goes on to say she feels the movie is really about making choices.

If You Can Play, You Can Play

Brian Burke (pictured left) is the president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and of the US Olympic hockey team.  In 2009 his son Brendan came out as gay, and began to speak out about homophobia in sports.

In 2010, Brendan was killed in a car crash.  As a result of his death, his father and older brother (Patrick) have taken on the topic of homophobia in hockey, and sports in general.  In March of 2012, Patrick founded the You Can Play campaign to help bring more attention to this issue.

Brian recently took part in an interview to talk about the subject, and it is posted online.  You can see the interview here:

Congressman Barney Frank Weds

Barney Frank is a Massachusetts Representative, member of the Democratic Party, and had a big hand in the Dodd-Frank bill, which President Obama signed into law in 2010.

Frank came out as gay on May 30, 1987, "prompted in part by increased media interest in his private life" and the death of Stewart McKinney, "a closeted bisexual Republican representative from Connecticut"; Frank told The Washington Post after McKinney's death there was "An unfortunate debate about 'Was he or wasn't he? Didn't he or did he?' I said to myself, I don't want that to happen to me."  Frank is considered the most prominent gay politician in the United States.  On November 28, 2011, Frank announced that he would retire from the Congress at the conclusion of his term in 2013.

On Saturday (July 7th) Frank married his partner, James Ready, making him the first sitting Congressman to enter a same-sex marriage.

The Story of a Southern Baptist Minister -- and His Gay Son

Matthew Nevels, his wife Frances and their 4 children attended services each Sunday at the Red Bank Baptist Church.  His faith meant as much to him as his children.

Matthew never expected that his middle son was gay, and could never imagine that one day he and Frances would be going to the hospital to see their son in the hospital, suffering from full-blown AIDS.

It's at this time that Matthew finds his faith tested, and must do what he can for his son, and finds himself at odds with the very church he went to for solace.

Out West & Beyond Brokeback in Indianapolis, IN

Brokies are familiar with Gregory Hinton and the Autry National Center in Los Angeles.  Gregory is behind the "Out West" program, which discusses the history of the GLBT community in the old west.  He is also responsible for the stage production of "Beyond Brokeback - The Impact of a Film."  We met Gregory at the Autry in LA when the iconic shirts from Brokeback were on display.

These two events are coming together at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art on August 18th.  On that date, there will be a presentation of "Out West:  LGBT Hidden Histories."  Gregory Hinton and Jim Wilke (pictured at left - photo by Blake Little) will conduct a talk and gallery tour.  This will be followed by a screening of Brokeback Mountain.  After the screening will be a presentation of "Beyond Brokeback - The Impact Of a Film".

It was recently announced that Zach Adamson, the first openly gay Indianapolis City Councilmember,  will be reading the part of Dave Cullen at the Eiteljorg.

There is a thread for this event in the Gatherings & Reunions section, and there is a link in TDS.  Just scroll down to the section discussing Brokie Gatherings and click the link.

Engagement Pic Used in Attack Ad

Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere are a NJ couple who have been together for 12 years.  2 years ago, they decided to get married and to celebrate had an engagement party.

The party took place near the Brooklyn Bridge, and they were encouraged to take a picture kissing.

Two weeks ago, Brian and Tom received a call from a friend to tell them that their picture had  been altered and used in an attack ad against a politician who had supported civil unions in Colorado.  This politician (Jean White) later lost her reelection bid.

The original picture is on the top of the image to the left, and the altered one used in the ad is on the bottom.

Brian & Tom have no idea that Public Advocate of the United States (a registered hate group) had used their photo without their permission and are now taking legal action against them.  Public Advocate's president, Eugene Delgaudio, claims he never authorized the use of the photo, and says that a member of his group could've taken it and edited it without his permission.

Michelle Williams Open To Reunion

Michelle Williams had her first big break as a member of the TV teen-drama Dawson's Creek.  The show debuted on the WB network  in 1998 and ran until 2003.

Rumors have been circulating about a reunion for the show.  These rumors started some time ago, but picked up speed with Katie Holmes' divorce from Tom Cruise.  Katie was also a member of the show, but Tom Cruise told her he felt it was "going backwards" to do a reunion.  That being said, Katie is open to the reunion, as is James Van Der Beek.

At a recent press conference, Michelle Williams was asked about a reunion, and she commented she would be very happy to be part of one, although for her it would be very difficult as her character (bad girl Jen Lindley) died at the end of the series.

"I would very happily do a reunion show, I don't know what it would be," Williams, 31, told the crowd, laughing as she added, "My character died in the end, so there are certain limitations for me. It's either I come back as a ghost or I'm shot through a lot of gauzy, hazy light as my nineteen-year-old self."

McMurtry Sets Auction of 300,000 Books

On August 10th, author & screenwriter Larry McMurtry will be auctioning off 300,000 books from his "Booked Up" inventory.  At age 76, he feels it's time for these books "to enter back into the great river of books."

Mr. McMurtry, who wrote the Pulitzer-winning "Lonesome Dove" and, more recently, co-wrote the script for "Brokeback Mountain," said that he hopes to draw young collectors and booksellers to the auction, which he called an opportunity for them "that may not come again in their lifetime."

"Booked Up" is not closing.  Mr. McMurtry intends to keep 100,000 books for "Booked Up."

"Common Gender," Transgender-Hindu Romance Film, A Smash Hit in Bangladesh

"Common Gender" is an indie-film that was initially given a limited release.  It tells the story of of a transgendered person (a "hijras") who falls for a Hindu boy.

To everyone's surprise, "Common Gender" is showing to full houses, and the six cinema run is now going to be expanded to nationwide cinemas for a longer period of time.

The film's director (Norman Robin) says he was inspired to make the movie after witnessing a hijra being beaten in front of a group of 100s of people for trying to use a public bathroom.

On July 24th, the San Diego Pride Parade took place, and for the first time, active duty members were able to take part and wear their uniforms.

The U.S. military contingent included about 40 members — some active, some retired. As they assembled in the staging area, countless spectators took pictures of and with them. Most of the active-duty personnel said they were under orders not to give interviews although photos were fine.

Roberta Maxwell Takes to the Stage

Roberta Maxwell (best known to us as "Ma Twist" from Brokeback) will be taking to the stage from July 24th through August 26th, playing the part of Maria in Uncle Vanya at the Soho Rep theater in NYC.

Uncle Vanya has had a successful run at the Soho Rep, and this is a second extension of the performance.  The original actress playing Maria (Rebecca Schull) has prior commitments and is unable to continue with the show.

Maxwell is no stranger to the stage, she has won two Obie Awards, for her performances in Ashes and Whistle in the Dark, and was also part of the Lincoln Center Theater's Tony-winning revival of Our Town.

Jake Gyllenhall’s Stage Debut.

Jake Gyllenhaal has signed on as part of the ensemble cast of Nick Payne's play, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, which Roundabout Theatre Company will produce late this summer in its Off Broadway space, the Laura Pels Theatre.

A critical hit in its 2009 premiere at London's Bush Theatre, Payne's comic drama is about an off-kilter family who knows what the problems are, but not how to fix them. At the center of the story is Anna, an overweight teenager being bullied at school. In order to protect her, the girl's mother transfers her to to the school where she teaches, but that makes the situation worse.…

Tickets for this theater are usually available to subscribers first, and then open to the general public. Tickets for this play will be going on sale to the general public as of Monday July 23rd.

Historic Alberta Property Gutted by Fire

The Grand Ole West Villa Ranch is located in Beiseker, Alberta, Canada and has buildings that date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

On Friday, a lightning strike caused a fire that burned down a number of the buildings.  The fire department was dispatched to another fire, and by the time they arrived at the West Villa Ranch, it had been burning for almost an hour.

Items from the Grand Ole West Villa Ranch have been rented as props for movies like Brokeback Mountain, Shanghai Noon and other westerns.

Anne Hathaway Is Game For A ‘Catwoman’ Spinoff

The Dark Knight Rises is a summer blockbuster, and the movie centers around the characters of superhero Batman, and super-villian Bane.

However, many reviewers have been saying that actress Anne Hathaway steals every scene she is in as Catwoman.  Due to the amount of attention the character (and Anne's portrayal of her) has received, talk is beginning to circulate that a Catwoman movie is would be a hit, and Anne Hathaway would have to reprise her role from Dark Knight.

In 2004 a film titled Catwoman was released, with Halle Berry in the lead role, and it was panned by both critics and fans, and the film flopped at the box office.

When questioned on this development, Anne Hathaway replied:

“I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if it’s with the right people. She lives in [Nolan’s Gotham City] and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.”

Marriage Equality Plank Drafted

Representative Barney Frank (D-Mass) told the Washington Blade on Monday that Marriage Equality has been added officially to the DNC platform.

Frank reported that it was added by unanimous vote, and the verbiage of the platform discusses gay-marriage, the rejection of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), and also discusses the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Companies Seeking to Connect with Gay Consumers

While Chick-Fil-A has gotten a lot of attention lately due to their anti-gay donations and comments from Dan Cathy, a number of companies are going out of their way to court GLBT customers.

Kraft Foods, Starbucks, TD Bank, Apple, JC Penny and other companies are using gay-positive images in sales catalogs, print ads, TV commercials in an effort to let the GLBT community know that they appreciate and want their business.

This support is also coming in the form of donations.  Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos recently donated $2.5 million dollars to back a gay marriage ballot that has already been supported by Nike, Starbucks, and Microsoft.

African Olympian Comes Out at London

Karen Hultzer from South Africa is competing in the sport of archery at the London Olympics.

While she was in London, Karen used the opportunity to come out as a lesbian in the hopes of fighting homophobia in sports.  She is one of 23 out gay and lesbian athletes competing in London.

Gay rights campaigners said there are still only a handful of top athletes who are openly gay -- and usually their admissions come post-career -- so have called on the International Olympic Committee to actively tackle discrimination against homosexuality in sport.

"All the openly gay athletes this year are from the United States, Europe or Australia and none from Asia and only one from Africa. People are still killed for being gay in the Middle East and Africa," said Cyd Zeigler, co-founder of OutSports.

"Sport is still a homophobic corner of virtually every culture so it is important that we are seen at the Olympics and show solidarity."

X Marks The Spot

I'm sure that you all have seen the red "X" in various threads in the forum.  Some of you may not know what this means.

The "X" is in the place of an image that is no longer available for viewing.  It's possible that the image was from someone else's PhotoBucket account, and they deleted/canceled the account.  It is most evident in the Jake threads, Heath threads, and Photo Caption threads.

There is really no way to fix the Jake or Heath threads, but there may be a way to fix the Photo Caption threads.

If you are a Photo Caption fan and want to help out, here's all you need to do.  Go through any of the Photo Caption threads, the Photo Captioning Greatest Hits, or the Photo Caption Series thread.  If you come across a caption that has a missing image, and you can remember what pic was there, or you have a copy of the pic, or know an equally appropriate pic, just send a PM to me (CellarDweller115) with a link to the post, and I can repair the image.

Meet The Military's First Openly Gay Flag Officer

With Tammy Smith's promotion to the rank of Army brigadier general on Friday, the military gets its first openly gay flag officer.

Ms. Smith is a 26 year veteran of the military and has served in Afghanistan, Panama and Costa Rica as well as stateside assignments.

She came out as a lesbian the same day that she received her promotion, and her spouse is Tracey Hepner, director of operations for the Military Partners and Families Coaliton, an advocacy and support organization for LGBT members of the military.

Mitt Romney Selects His Running Mate

Mitt Romney has announced his selection for his Vice-Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Not long after the announcement, the ACLU  (American Civil Liberties Union) released a brief report that reveals an appalling civil liberties record for Ryan.

The report finds that Ryan, the congressman representing Wisconsin’s 1st District, holds almost uniformly harmful views on five key civil liberties issues including a humane immigration policy, LGBT equality, reproductive rights, torture and indefinite detention and fair voting access.

Transgender Woman Settles Suit

Attorneys for Bianca Feliciano have announced that she has settled her lawsuit against the town of Cicero.

While out for a walk with her friend (also a transgendered woman) they were approached by officers of Cicero and accused of being "sex workers" and when Bianca produced ID that listed her sex as female, the officers threatened to arrest her for fraud.

Bianca also stated that after being transported to the station, the officers made crude and harassing comments towards her.

Bianca made the decision to transition to female at age 14, and was 17 when the incident took place.

Inspiration For The Joker

With the popularity of The Dark Knight Rises in theaters this summer, speculation has begun again regarding Heath Ledger, and just where he found the inspiration for his portrayal of The Joker.

A recent video discovery may offer some clues.

The video is from The Don Lane Show, which was filmed in Australia 30 years ago, is an interview with Tom Waits.  Tom Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."  With this trademark growl, his incorporation of pre-rock music styles such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville, and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music, Waits has built up a distinctive musical persona.

Waits voice, movements, and gestures have reminded Batman fans of Heath's version of The Joker.

6th Anniversary of Texas BBQ

The Texas BBQ  (called the BBM Backyard BBQ) were held on August 11th, 12th, and 13th in 2006, and the 6th anniversary just passed.

The Brokie meet up seemed to go without a hitch, however, one BIG monkey wrench was thrown at us at the last minute.  On Thursday (8/10/06) there was a terror attempt at Heathrow airport, a passenger attempted to sneak a liquid explosive onboard in their shoes.  Flights were cancelled, delayed and it appeared that some of the UK DCF members would not be able to make it.

As it turns out, the members in question had managed to get on the last plane that was allowed to leave that day after a long delay on the tarmac.

Some of the members who attended are no longer members, some opt to lurk today, others are still active, posting and attending other gatherings.

If you want to see group shots of the gatherings, click the link below to the Four Fuckin' Years section of the forum, and find the thread titled:  Brokeback Gatherings: Group Shots: Read Only

Forum Donation to It Gets Better Project -- Dave Cullen

As many of you know, we were very successful with our self-published book Beyond Brokeback, recovering our publication costs and then some. We also took in more donations than we were able to use on the Variety ads, particularly the ad honoring Heath. We announced at the time that we would use some of the money to keep the forum running, and donate the excess funds to a cause in keeping with the essence of the film, our membership and our forum.

We asked for your input, and while many different organizations were mentioned, the overwhelming consensus gathered around some way to help struggling gay youth. Fifty years after Jake and Ennis's tale, we have advanced light years in the acceptability of LGBT people, but progress has been uneven, and nearly every kid still faces a daunting challenge to come out. We'd like to help these kids.

We had all sorts of worthy candidates, but someone had to make the final decision, so that was me. Most members agreed that we could have the biggest impact if we chose one--or perhaps two--organizations, rather than splitting it up into much smaller amounts. After years of discussion and deliberation and frankly fretting, I had just about decided to split the funds between two organizations doing incredible work for at-risk kids in very different ways: The Trevor Project, and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). But then in 2010, the It Gets Better Campaign began, and snowballed into something extraordinary. It has become one of the most effective methods ever to give struggling kids what they really need most: hope. That it will get better.

It's an amazing/effective project, and the kicker is that it donates most of the money it raises to two groups: The Trevor Project and GLSEN. That made the decision much easier: we could support all three worthy efforts by donating the money to It Gets Better. So that's what we did. We made a $7,000 contribution to It Gets Better in the name of "The Ultimate Brokeback Forum & Heath Ledger." We thought those of you who had donated to honor Heath--and everyone who told their story in the book--would be glad to see that wonderful guy honored in our little way.

We actually made the donation a while back, but I had to work out the tax implications, which took quite some time. I apologize for the delay in getting the news to you. I hope it brightens your day.

If you want to know more about It Gets Better, this is the organization's summary from its website:

The It Gets Better Project

And there is much more at wikipedia, including this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Gets_Better_Project

The project operates as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Contributions benefit the It Gets Better Project, The Trevor Project, and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

Please feel free to let us know how you feel about this, you can do so at the "Respond to The Daily Sheet" thread.

Gay Hate Day: The opposite of pride

A group called Rassemblement de la Jeunesse Camerounaise association (Cameroonian Youth Rally, or RJC) has declared Tuesday, August 21 to be 'Gay Hate Day' in Cameroon, which is exactly what it sounds like.

"Hate Day" will be the first "celebration" against homosexuality in Cameroon.  The group that organized this 'Gay Hate Day' released a statement that the date was picked to commemorate the rape and murder of student Narcisse Olivier Djomo Pokam.   The RJC claims that Narcisse was a victim of the "gay mafia" that runs the country, and that the day "aims to glorify homophobia with a parade to take place through the Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital city."

Rufus Wainwright to Marry This Week

Rufus Wainwright is set to get married to his longtime partner this week.

Rufus and his partner (Jorn Weisbrodt) have been engaged since November of 2010, and are expected to tie the knot at the home of Rufus' singer/songwriter father, Loudon Wainwright.

Rufus and Jorn have been a couple for more than five years, with Rufus proposing to Jorn during a meal at an Indian restaurant.

A New Project for Jake Gyllenhaal

With the newly competed End of Watch under his belt, Jake Gyllenhaal is now moving on to another project.

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (who directed Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson) are going to direct a screenplay they've written called "Mississippi Grind."  Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks with the pair to both produce and star in the movie.

The story centers on a down-on-his-luck gambler facing crushing debt who teams up with a younger gambling addict (Gyllenhaal) in an attempt to change his luck. The two set off on a road trip through the South with visions of winning back what has been lost.

WME is packaging the project, which looks to have a budge of less than $10 million.

Madonna Sued by Russian Activists for Supporting Gay Rights

Russian activists have filed a lawsuit for $10 million dollars, saying they were offended by Madonna's support of homosexuals at her recent concert stop.

A spokeswoman for the Moscow District Court in Saint Petersburg confirmed to AFP the lawsuit had been received, adding the court would decide by the end of the week whether to accept it.

The nine plaintiffs, including activists from the Trade Union of Russian Citizens, claim there were offended by Madonna's support for gays.

During the show, Madonna stripped down to her bra to reveal the words "no fear" scrawled on her back, and later called out to her audience, asking them to show "love and appreciation for the gay community".

Madonna is currently in the middle of her world tour, in support of her latest CD, MDNA.

Erase The Red "X"

Last week I posted about my willingness to fix links that are in the Photocaption threads, if people are able to give me copies of the images that have since gone missing, or give me a similar picture that would work in its place.

I am happy to say that  between my own memory, plus images and links I've received through PM, I've been able to repair between 15 to 20 photo captions.  I've been starting in the "Greatest Hits" thread, and since the posts there are quoted, I follow the quote to the original post, and fix that as well.

If you know/remember what images were in photo captions that are now missing, please send a PM with the image, and the link to the "broken" image, and I can get it fixed.

It's A Boy!!!

Actress Anna Faris (best known for her roles in Scary Movie & Brokeback Mountain) and her husband, Chris Pratt, welcomed their son, Jack to the world.  He was born on Saturday,  8/25.

Full details have not been released yet, including how early Jack was born, he was originally due in the fall, and is currently in NICU.  Both mother and son are doing fine.

Brokies Take Manhattan to See Jake Gyllenhaal's Play - Care To Join Us?

Jake Gyllenhaal's US stage debut at the Roundabout Theater is underway and getting positive reviews.  Of course, Brokies can't let this opportunity pass them by.

On Saturday, September 22nd, approximately 17 Brokies will be spending the day in NYC.  Dinner is planned, and we all have tickets to see If There Is, I Haven't Found It Yet.  After the show, there will be a Q & A, but it is not definite that Jake will be part of the Q & A.

We have two extra tickets for that show, as well as two tickets for the day before (Friday 9/21) and if anyone is interested in these tickets, please contact me directly.  This is a first come-first serve basis, and the cost of the tickets is $100.00 a piece.

Possible New Project For Ang Lee

Ang Lee's new project, Life of Pi, is soon to be released and he's already been connected to a new film.

Director David Fincher was originally on board to direct a Cleopatra biopic that stars Angelina Jolie.  It appears that David is no longer connected to the project, but no definite answer as to why.  The Hollywood rumor mill has started to churn, and it appears that Ang Lee is now being considered as David's replacement to direct the film.

Sony Pictures is keen to get Ang, their reason being that he is still "bankable" after his Oscar success with Brokeback Mountain.

Rosie O'Donnell Secretly Married Fiancee Michelle Rounds

Former TV host Rosie O'Donnell revealed to the public through her blog that she and fiancee Michelle Round married privately.

The pair announced their engagement in December of 2011, and had planned to get married in August of 2012.   Round needed to have surgery to remove gastrointestinal desmoid tumors, and rather than wait, the pair decided to move their wedding up.  In an odd twist, their original wedding date was the day that Rosie O'Donnell had her heart attack.

O'Donnell went on to say that once they've both recovered, they will move forward and have the wedding of their dreams.

NBC Affiliate Won't Air "New Normal"

An NBC affiliate that is owned by the Mormon Church has said they will not air the new TV show, The New Normal .

The show is about a gay couple who line up a surrogate mother to have their child, and invite her to live in their home.  Other characters on the show include the surrogate mother's conservative mother, and a friend of the gay couple, played by NeNe Leakes, best knows as one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta.

The Utah affiliate has said that the homosexual content is not the reason for the refusal to air, but rather the explicit content and offensive language.  This same affiliate has passed on other shows that they deem inappropriate for family viewing, including Saturday Night Live.

Transgender DNC Delegate Delivers Sermon at Local Church

Janice Covington has become the first openly transgender delegate from North Carolina to attend the Democratic National Convention.

“I advocated for LGBT rights, basically human rights, for many years,” Covington told the more than 35 people who attended the service at Wedgewood.

“When we had the Amendment One vote … I thought, I’d like to be a Democratic delegate to the DNC,” Covington said.

Covington delivered a sermon at Wedgewood Church, and the church's pastor, Chris Ayers, called Covington "a hero and a pioneer."
