Beyond Brokeback in Phoenix, AZ
|
Beyond Brokeback is looking to bring their stage performance to Phoenix, Az. in March of 2013. This is a "call-out" to any of our Arizona members. We're looking for a volunteer group of 6 or 7 people, including a pianist and/or guitarist, to perform a staged reading of Beyond Brokeback.
If you know anyone who you feel can help bring this to fruition (actors, musicians) please PM BayCityJohn with any suggestions or leads in the Phoenix area.
This is a prime excuse for an Arizona gathering.
Please see the link below for the thread that has been started on this possible event.

Tony Perkins: Selfish Gays Oppose The Salvation Army ‘Because It’s Christian’
|
Each year during the holidays we see a familiar sight, the Salvation Army bell-ringers collecting donations. We also hear each year in response to this about how the Salvation Army takes a portion of their donations and gives them to organizations that work against gay rights.
This year, Tony Perkins of The Family Research Council has issued a statement that the gay community is "selfish" and that the gay community "targets" the Salvation Army because it's a Christian organization, and the gay community would rather see the advancement of their agenda than help the poor.
Very basic Google searches will bring many results on the Salvation Army and their anti-gay stance.

Frank Schubert, Calls Newt Gingrich's New Gay Marriage Stance 'Stupid'
|
In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Newt Gingrich made statements regarding gay marriage. He stated that while he continued to profess a belief that marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman, he suggested that the party (and he himself) could accept a distinction between a "marriage in a church from a legal document issued by the state." He also made the statement that he believed gay marriage was "inevitable."
This prompted a response from Frank Schubert, the National Political Director for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). Schubert called Gingrich's statements as "ridiculous" and also claims that though NOM is disappointed with the results of the election, (where three states legalized gay marriage) they believe that "by an overwhelming 60% margin (according to a national survey conducted by Gingrich’s own pollster, Kellyanne Conway), the American people continue to believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman."

Reparative Therapy Debate
|
This past fall, a law was passed in the state of California that made it illegal for therapists and counselors to use "sexual orientation change efforts" on clients under 18. The law was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. Any licensed therapists and counselors found in violation of the law would be engaging in unprofessional conduct and subject to discipline by state licensing boards.
The new law was set to go into effect on January 1st, 2013, but a federal appeals court put a stop on this new law.
Licensed counselors who practice so-called "reparative therapy" and two families who say their teenage sons have benefited from it sought the injunction after a lower court judge refused the request.

Author Annie Proulx Receives Grant

United States Artists Fellowships, awarded annually at the Getty Center, celebrate artists from all disciplines. This year the awards ceremony took place at The Getty Center in L.A. A total of $50,000.00 in grant money was given out by actor Tim Robbins, who also hosted the event.
"What I like about [USA Fellowships] is that the money is real, and it really does help create art," Robbins said. "I felt it was something that was absolutely crucial in this day and age. Any organization that supports and facilitates artists' work and doesn't get too bogged down in red tape and overhead costs is an organization I want to support."
Recipients of the awards this year included: jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, choreographer Trisha Brown, playwright David Henry Hwang, and author Annie Proulx.

Question Of The Week
|
Last Week's Question: Some Advent Wreathes use 4 candles, some 5. On a wreath with 5 candles, what do the candles symbolize?
The candles are traditionally lit in the following order: purple, purple, pink, purple, white. The first is called the "Candle of Hope." It symbolizes faith in God keeping his promises to humanity. The second is called the "Candle of Preparation," reminding Christians to "get ready" to receive God. The third candle is the "Candle of Joy." It recalls the angels joyfully singing about the birth of Christ. The fourth candle, the "Candle of Love," reminds Christians that God loves them enough to send his only Son to Earth. The "Christ Candle," the white candle in the center, stands for Jesus Christ himself.

Thread Spotlight SectionWe have a few threads to spotlight with this issue of TDS.
December 24th marked the 7th anniversary of The Dave Cullen Forum. We have a section of the forum called "Four Fuckin' Years" which was started on the 4th anniversary of the forum. Please feel free to drop by any of the threads there, and make posts to discuss any memories you want to talk about.
"Four Fuckin' Years"Next week will be the first day of the new year. Each year, forum members post replies to a "survey" of sorts that is called "The 20-- Retrospective Survey". This is posted each year, and is our own "year in review", where we talk about what we did and maybe did not accomplish this year.
There are already a number of replies up. If you would like to read what your fellow members here have posted, and perhaps put your own reply up, simply go to the thread, quote the original survey, remove the quote tags, and fill in your answers. The Survey is in the "A Few Fun Questions" thread.
