Today is election day.  Exercise your right to vote!

A Letter From Barrack Obama

10 year old Sophia Bailey Klugh was being teased in school because she comes from a family with two dads.  She decided to deal with her feelings by writing a letter to President Obama, telling him how she was being teased at school, and thanking him for "ageeing that two men can love each other" and that her dads "love each other".

Her two dads (Jonathan Bailey and Triton Klugh) scanned the letter and posted it to their Facebook page, saying that anyone who disagreed with the feelings of their 10 year old daughter should unfriend them.

President Obama took time to respond to her, and his letter states that she's fortunate to have two dads who "who care deeply for you" and goes on to call her an "exceptional daughter."

You can see Sophia's letter, and the president's reply at the link below.

Interview With Gareth Thomas

Gareth Thomas is a Welsh rugby star who made news in 2009 when he became the first active rugby star to come out and admit that he's gay, becomming one of the few professional atheletes to come out while still actively competing.

Since then, Gareth has retired from his sport last fall, was voted the most influential gay person in the UK, received Stonewall’s hero of the year award in 2010, and proved his credentials as a positive role model during his time in the Celebrity Big Brother house earlier this year.

His inspirational story is now being made into a feature film with Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke as star.  He's also currently starring as the genie in a production of Aladdin.

Click the link below to read an interview with Gareth, where he talks about acting, the film on his life, his coming out,  and other topics.

Canadian Rector Addresses New Zealand Congregation

New Zealand has found itself in the middle of marriage equality protests, both for and against its institution.

Recenlty, NZ was visited by Rev. Dr. Peter Elliot, a Rector for the Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Vancouver.  While he was there he addressed a congregation at St Paul’s Cathedral in Dunedin.

He told them that Canada had legalized gay marriage in 2005, and that since the legalization of gay marriage, respect and tolerance for gay people has increased in Canada.

A marriage eqality bill has passed its first reading in New Zealand, and the majority of the New Zealand population are in favor of gay marriage, however, some church leaders have been preaching their opposition.

The second reading of the bill is expected some time next year.

Brokeback Star's Apartment Building Flooded

Portions of the East Coast are still trying to recover from Hurricane Sandy, with FEMA, the Red Cross, and other organizations rushing to give aid.  Many people are still without power and heat, gas is being rationed.

One of the areas that was affected is where Michelle Willams and Jason Segal live.  The buidling that they moved to only a few short months ago is one of the many properties that was flooded when Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast on October 28th.  They were forced to evacuate the premises due to the waterfront apartment being extremely damaged.

According to workers who have been in the area, the building also contained a supermarket, and due to the lost power, the entire building smells of rotten meat.

Another Brokeback Star Onstage

In recent issues of TDS, we've told you of both Roberta Maxwell (Ma Twist) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist) taking to the stage for parts in different plays.

It has been announced that there will be a Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, and one of the actors will be David Harbour, who played Randall in Brokeback Mountain.

The revival will mark the 30th anniversary of the play, and will star Al Pacino, along with John C. McGinley, David Harbour, Richard Schiff, Jeremy Shamos, Bobby Cannavale and Murphy Guyer.

The David Mamet play tells the story of a Chicago real estate office, and the main storyline is the determination to achieve the American dream.

President Obama Reelected

All the campaigning is over and the end result is that President Obama was reelected as President of the United States.

The day of the election was a tense one, and for a long time, the results of the "swing states" were too close to call, but by 11:15pm the election was called for Barrack Obama.

While President Obama won by a great difference of electoral votes, some of the states had close margins between the two candidates, and Florida was not called for Obama until Saturday, 4 days after the election.

Election Night Victories For Gay Marriage

Election Night was a big night for other liberal causes.

American got their first openly gay Senator when Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, defeated former Gov. Tommy Thompson.   Baldwin's supporters were thrilled with the win, specifically because her sexuality had not been used as an "attacking point" by Thompson.  When Baldwin commented on her historic win, her quote was:  "I didn't run to make history, I ran to make a difference."

The states of Washington and Colorado voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use.  Federally, marijuana is still considered an illegal drug, so the ramifications of these votes is still being discussed.

A big victory of the night was gay marriage.  Three states had marriage equality up for the vote, and it passed by popular vote in all three, making it the first time this has ever happened.  GLBT supporters and voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington were thrilled with the results.  A fourth state (Minnesota) didn't approve gay marriage, however, they voted against a measure that would've amended their state's constitution that would've defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

UPS Stops Funding to Boy Scouts

In 2010, UPS (United Parcel Service Inc.) had given a funding/donation of $150,000.00 to the Boy Scouts of America.  The company recently announced that it will not be matching that donation in the future until the Scouts stop discriminating against gay scouts and leaders.

GLAAD said UPS told it that under revised guidelines, organizations that are unable to attest to having a policy or practices that align with The UPS Foundation’s non-discrimination policy will no longer be considered eligible for funding.

In another story, Eagle Scout Jackie W. Wagner was given his Eagle Scout Awards, and then in a prostest against the anti-gay policy, posed with it in a photo for the No H8 campaign.

Brokies in London At the V & A

The V&A (Victoria & Albert) is running an exhibition that contains over 100 costumes from 100 years of movies, spanning from 1912 to 2012.  The exhibition is running from October 20th, 2012 to January 27th, 2013.

Costumes range from the beginnings of film (Charlie Chaplin) up to such current films as Dark Knight, and everything in between.  The exhibition also includes the iconic outfits worn by Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain.  Brokies decided this was a prime reason for a gathering, and from November 9th - November 14th a group of us were in the area, getting to drinkin' and talkin' and all, and taking in the exhibit.

Costumes included:  Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, Cruella DeVille from 101 Dalmations, Indiana Jones, Darth Vader, Melanie Daniels from The Birds, Marilyn Monroe's white dress from The 7 Year Itch, Rose DeWitt from Titanic, Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean, The Blues Brothers, and many more.

New Jake Movie Starts Filming in January

Prisoners, a new film staring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, will begin filming in Georgia this January.  This schedule is tight for both performers, as Jackman is still filming the movie The Wolverine, and Gyllenhaal is onstage in New York until close to the end of December.

The production company is currently accepting resumés for crew positions in anticipation of the January start date.

The film centers on Hugh Jackman's character, a carpenter whose daughter and her best friend go missing.  When he feels he's unable to get help from the police, he takes the law into his own hands, until Jake Gyllenhaal's character (Detective Loki) gets in his way.

President Obama and The Gay Vote

November 6th saw President Barrack Obama re-elected to a second term.  Much has been made about the black vote that Obama secured (98%) as well as the Latino vote (70%), the youth vote and the women's vote.  However, reporters are now talking about how the gay vote also helped to push Obama over the top.

Exit polling suggests that there was an even split between Obama and Romney for straight voters, and in swing states Romney had a slight edge.

However, when it came to voters who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, there was a three-to-one edge for President Obama, giving him 76% of that voting group, compared to just 22% for Mitt Romney.

For more information, click the link below.

17 Year Old Denied Confirmation

In the Catholic religion, when a young Catholic decided they want to continue in the religion as an adult, they go through a ceremony called a Confirmation.  17 year old Lennon Cihack was one young man who was looking forward to this rite of passage in his life.  Imagine his surprise when he found out a Facebook posting was causing him to be denied his participatioin in this rite.

Cihack had posted a picture of himself by a "Vote NO" sign.  He lives in Minnesota, a state that on Election Day, had a measure on the ballot to change the state's Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.  By voting "no", you were taking a stand for marriage equality.

Cihack believes in marriage equality, and posted the picture to his Facebook back to show support.  A priest at Assumption Church saw the image on Chiack's Facebook page, and refused to Confirm him.  He also gave the image to the Bishop who would be hearig the appeal of the Cihack family, and he refused the appeal, meaning that while Cihack's friends were confirmed, Cihack was not.

When the diocese of Crookston was contacted for a comment on the story, they replied that the Bishop is out of town right now.

First Gay Leader Of Oregon's House

The Democratic majority in Oregon's House of Representatives is set to name openly gay state Rep. Tina Kotek as their new leader tonight.

Kotek, a state representative since 2007, joins Washington's Ed Murray and Colorado's Mark Ferrandino as newly named leaders, which brings the total number of states headed by an out and proud lawmaker to five.

Before being elected to office, Kotek worked as the Policy Director of Children First for Oregon, prior to which she was a Public Policy Advocate for Oregon Food Bank. She co-chaired the Human Services Coalition of Oregon during the 2002 budget crisis and currently serves as the co-chair of the Governor’s Medicaid Advisory Committee.

Gay Marriage Protests in France

France's President Francois Hollande made a campaign promise to support gay marriage, a move that is supported by about 60% of the population.

However, on Saturday, more thann 100,000 protesters took to the streets to stop the promise from being held.  Protesters from the Catholic, Muslim, Protestant and Jewish communities urged Hollande's government to allow more time for a public debate on what they said was a foundation of society.

Most protesters held signs that read:  1 Papa, 1 Maman pour tous les enfants (1 father, 1 mother for all the children).

If the law passes, it would make France the 12th country around the world to legalize same-sex marriage. It is already allowed in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands,Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden

Question Of The Week

Last Week's Question:   What is the name of the first gay superhero?

The answer.....well, it depends on who you ask.  DC Comics introduced a character named Extraño (Spanish for 'strange' or 'odd').  Outwardly resembling nearly every stereotype of a gay man, Extraño initially wore loose colorful garments and has a lively, jovial attitude. He refers to himself as "Auntie" and usually imparts parent-like advice to his teammates. In reality, he may be the very first openly gay superhero.   Being a magician, Extraño has a number of abilities linked to his trade. Unlike stage parlor tricks, these spells rely on real sorcery and can be used for a variety of effects.

Meanwhile, some years later, Marvel comics had their super hero Northstar officially come out as gay.  Northstar is a mutant who can move and fly at superhuman speed with the potential of reaching near light speeds. He also possesses superhuman stamina, endurance (both essential to maintain super-speed for any length of time), and reflexes.  In June of 2012, Marvel released a story where Northstar married his partner, Kyle Jinadu.

Gay Marriage at the Supreme Court

When the U.S. Supreme Court convenes behind closed doors Friday, the justices will weigh whether to jump headlong into the historic same-sex marriage debate -- or merely dip their toes in the roiling legal waters.

The high court could decide whether to rule once and for all on California's Proposition 8, the 2008 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. And it could choose to hear up to eight other cases that challenge the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal benefits to same-sex couples.

Depending on how far the court goes, it could end up legalizing gay marriage nationwide, banning it nationwide, or continuing the current state-by-state experiment in whether gays and lesbians can marry

Brokeback Anniversaries

In just under two weeks, we will be marking the 7th anniversary (Dec. 9th) of the release of Brokeback Mountain.  December 24th marks the 7th anniversary of the Dave Cullen Forum.

I can only speak for myself, but it's been some ride, huh?  In 7 years we've seen the movie's release, the forum's founding, Golden Globes wins, Academy Award wins and one devastating loss.  We've seen forum projects like the DVD Donation drive, the Variety Ad, and had prior issues of TDS publish profiles of James Schamus, Diana Osanna, and Annie Proulx.  We've recently given a donation as a forum to "It Gets Better".

We've mourned the loss of Heath Ledger, as well as several DCF/BetterMost members.  It's my belief they are having a heck of a Brokie Gathering in the skies.

We've had Brokie gatherings in Texas, Colorado, California, London, DC, Chicago, as well as a road trip through Wyoming to see the story locations, and Canada to see the filming locations.  We also have the annual Boston Brokie Bash to raise money for AIDS research.

There is much to talk about, and much to celebrate!  We have a section here on DCF called Four Fuckin' Years, that has numerous threads for use to discuss our memories of the movie, the cast, DCF in general, whatever you would like.  You can find it at the link below.  Please don't hesitate to post there!  You never know what memories for someone else your posts will spark.

Ang Lee Compares Making Risky 'Life of Pi' to 'Brokeback Mountain'

In a recent interview, director Ang Lee discusses his latest release, Life of Pi, and the difficulties he had with filming the movie.  He also talks about the risks of making the movie, and compares them to Brokeback Mountain.

Ang goes on to talk about how he felt Brokeback would be an arthouse type of film, most likely not being seen by a lot of people.  When the film began to get wider distribution, he was worried at that point about criticism of a gay cowboy movie that was being taken to shopping malls.

He even discusses feeling so worried that while at home, he felt he was being followed on the streets, and talked to his brother (a distributor in Taiwan) about NOT buying the film.

Anne Hathaway a "Slam Dunk" for Best Supporting Actress

Christmas Day will see the release of the film version of Les Misérables, and Oscar talk and predictions have already started.

Reviewer Thelma Adams believes that Les Mis will be the film that receives the most Oscar nods this year, and firmly believes that Anne Hathaway will win Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine.  Fantine is an unwed mother and factory worker who is fired.  She later cuts and sells her hair, and then turns to prostitution to earn money to care for her daughter.  Fantine sings the film's signature song, "I Dreamed A Dream."

Besides Anne's outstanding acting in the film, her version of "I Dreamed A Dream" has already received such reviews as "breathtaking."

No Decision From Supreme Court

It was originally speculated on that on Friday (Nov. 30th) the Supreme Court would make a decision on Proposition 8, and the legality of same-sex marriage.

Californians on both sides of the argument find themselves waiting as the Court decided not to make any decisions on this charged matter on Friday.

The justices met behind closed doors to debate cases involving the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8,  the voter initiative that limits marriage to a man and a woman. The court said only that it had agreed to hear two new business cases.

Nonetheless, the court is almost certain to review at least one of the gay marriage cases.

West Point Chapel Hosts First Same-Sex Marriage

The U.S. Military Academy's Cadet Chapel at West Point hosted its first same-sex marriage Saturday.

Brenda Sue Fulton (in black), a West Point graduate and her partner Penelope Gnesin (in white) tied the knot in a church ceremony that was officiated by an Army chaplain.  Their ceremony comes just a little after the anniversary of President Obama ending the military's ban on gay people serving openly in the armed forces.

Brenda and Penelope have been together for 17 years, and had a ceremony in 1999, but have long wanted a ceremony that carried the legal weight of a true marriage.  However, the couple lives in New Jersey, a state that had tried to pass gay marriage, but the move was vetoed by current governor Chris Christie.

Box Office Mojo & Brokeback

When DCF first began, there was much speculation regarding how much money Brokeback would take in, and if it would hit the magic mark of $100 million.  Many mentioned that they were happy if Brokeback recovered their production costs of $14 million.

One website that was used to gauge the film's profit was Box Office Mojo, which tracks a film's income, position based on ticket sales, and other aspects.  BOM revealed days when Brokeback was the #1 movie in America, and what the film's final take was .  ($83,043,761)  With the film's anniversary just around the corner, I thought this would be a good time to review this information.  You can also research any other film you want, just by using the site's search feature.

Ang Lee to Receive Award

It has been announced that director Ang Lee will be honored next year at the upcoming Golden Reel Awards.

Heath Ledger As Batman?

Director Christopher Nolan recently revealed in an interview that when he approached Heath Ledger about being in the Batman franchise, it wasn't for the role of The Joker, but rather the role of Batman, the film's hero.  Not only that, but Nolan went on to reveal that Heath was not into being in a "super hero" movie, and originally turned him down.

Undeterred, Nolan continued talks with Ledger, explaining that he wanted to do a different type of Batman movie, one that had a more realistic take on the Batman myth, and after a while, Nolan won Ledger over, and he agreed to be in the film as The Joker, playing opposite Christian Bale as Batman.

The role ultimately won Ledger an Oscar, which was awarded posthumously after the actor's untimely death in January of 2008.

Question Of The Week

Last Week's Question:   Where did the term "Jump The Shark" come from?

As many discussed in the Respond to the Daily Sheet thread, the term originated after an episode of Happy Days, which featured Fonzie performing a water-ski jump over a caged shark in his trademark leather jacket.  The term is now applied to any episode that is deemed to be the moment a TV show has started its decline.

Supreme Court Takes Up Same-sex Marriage for First Time

On Friday (Dec 7th) the Supreme Court opted to step into the gay marriage debate by agreeing to review two cases to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The court decided to review a case on the federal level that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits heterosexual couples receive.  At the same time, the court (quite unexpectedly) also decided to review a case at the state level, regarding the state of California and Prop 8, a measure that was narrowly passed in 2008, and bans same-sex marriage.

At the moment, 31 states have amendments banning same-sex marriage, and 9 states have currently legalized same-sex marriage, three of those states passed those measures on our recent election day.

Popular opinions on same-sex marriage have started to shift, with a majority of the country now saying they are in favor of it, instead of opposed to it.

Arrests Made in Brutal Gay Bashing

André Baliera, a gay law student in São Paulo, Brazil, was brutally gay bashed on December 3rd by two assailants.

André was walking home from school when two men in a car started to verbally attack him, calling him a "faggot" numerous times.  André attempted to talk to the men (personal trainers Bruno Portieri, 25, and Diego Souza, 29) and at that point they got out of the car and started to attack him.  Thankfully, locals came to André's aid and apprehended the two attackers, who are saying that if André  had not addressed them, they wouldn't have jumped out of the car to attack him.

Bruno & Diego are facing hate crime charges, even though they deny they attacked him because he is gay.  They face up to approximately $25,000 (USD) in fines, and an undetermined amount of jail time.

Cop Fired in Gay Bashing Case to Get His Job Back

Eliut Hazzi was a police officer in Miami Beach, Florida when he and another officer were involved in an incident in 2009.  That incident involved Hazzi and fellow officer Frankly Forte handcuffed a man and kicked him and used anti-gay slurs.

Resident Harold Strickland witnessed the event while on his cellphone.  The two officers saw Strickland, and then arrested him as well.

A Miami Beach police officer fired last year for his role in an alleged gay bashing case is getting his job back.

Eliut Hazzi was fired last year during a tumultuous summer for the department, but fought to get his badge back and won a case Tuesday before an independent arbitrator.  Forte is also appealing his firing, but a date for his case has not been set.

Merck Cancels Donations to Boy Scouts

Merck is a pharmaceutical and health company based in Whitehouse Station, N.J.  Merck also is known for making charitable donations to various organizations.  The CEO of Merck was a boy scout and even received the "Good Scout" award in his youth.  In 2011, Merck gave $30,000.00 in donations to the Boy Scouts.

In a statement yesterday, Merck announced that it will no longer donate to the Boy Scouts due to their discrimination against gay people.

Merck states that the Boy Scouts' policy of excluding gays from their ranks or from leadership positions is in conflict with Merck's nondiscrimination policy, and therefore will not receive any more funds.

The statement went on to say that donations could restart in the future if the Scouts change their policy to include gay people.

Beyond Brokeback in Phoenix, AZ

Beyond Brokeback is looking to bring their stage performance to Phoenix, Az. in March of 2013.  This is a "call-out" to any of our Arizona members.  We're looking for a volunteer group of 6 or 7 people, including a pianist and/or guitarist, to perform a staged reading of Beyond Brokeback.

If you know anyone who you feel can help bring this to fruition (actors, musicians) please PM BayCityJohn with any suggestions or leads in the Phoenix area.

This is a prime excuse for an Arizona gathering.  ;D

Please see the link below for the thread that has been started on this possible event.

Tony Perkins: Selfish Gays Oppose The Salvation Army ‘Because It’s Christian’

Each year during the holidays we see a familiar sight, the Salvation Army bell-ringers collecting donations.  We also hear each year in response to this about how the Salvation Army takes a portion of their donations and gives them to organizations that work against gay rights.

This year, Tony Perkins of The Family Research Council has issued a statement that the gay community is "selfish" and that the gay community "targets" the Salvation Army because it's a Christian organization, and the gay community would rather see the advancement of their agenda than help the poor.

Very basic Google searches will bring many results on the Salvation Army and their anti-gay stance.

Frank Schubert, Calls Newt Gingrich's New Gay Marriage Stance 'Stupid'

In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Newt Gingrich made statements regarding gay marriage.  He stated that while he continued to profess a belief that marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman, he suggested that the party (and he himself) could accept a distinction between a "marriage in a church from a legal document issued by the state."   He also made the statement that he believed gay marriage was "inevitable."

This prompted a response from Frank Schubert, the National Political Director for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).  Schubert called Gingrich's statements as "ridiculous" and also claims that though NOM is disappointed with the results of the election, (where three states legalized gay marriage) they believe that "by an overwhelming 60% margin (according to a national survey conducted by Gingrich’s own pollster, Kellyanne Conway), the American people continue to believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman."

Reparative Therapy Debate

This past fall, a law was passed in the state of California that made it illegal for therapists and counselors to use "sexual orientation change efforts" on clients under 18.   The law was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown.  Any licensed therapists and counselors found in violation of the law would be engaging in unprofessional conduct and subject to discipline by state licensing boards.

The new law was set to go into effect on January 1st, 2013, but a federal appeals court put a stop on this new law.

Licensed counselors who practice so-called "reparative therapy" and two families who say their teenage sons have benefited from it sought the injunction after a lower court judge refused the request.

Author Annie Proulx Receives Grant

United States Artists Fellowships, awarded annually at the Getty Center, celebrate artists from all disciplines.  This year the awards ceremony took place at The Getty Center in L.A.  A total of $50,000.00 in grant money was given out by actor Tim Robbins, who also hosted the event.

"What I like about [USA Fellowships] is that the money is real, and it really does help create art," Robbins said. "I felt it was something that was absolutely crucial in this day and age. Any organization that supports and facilitates artists' work and doesn't get too bogged down in red tape and overhead costs is an organization I want to support."

Recipients of the awards this year included:  jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, choreographer Trisha Brown, playwright David Henry Hwang, and author Annie Proulx.

Question Of The Week

Last Week's Question:    Some Advent Wreathes use 4 candles, some 5.  On a wreath with 5 candles, what do the candles symbolize?

The candles are traditionally lit in the following order: purple, purple, pink, purple, white. The first is called the "Candle of Hope." It symbolizes faith in God keeping his promises to humanity. The second is called the "Candle of Preparation," reminding Christians to "get ready" to receive God. The third candle is the "Candle of Joy." It recalls the angels joyfully singing about the birth of Christ. The fourth candle, the "Candle of Love," reminds Christians that God loves them enough to send his only Son to Earth. The "Christ Candle," the white candle in the center, stands for Jesus Christ himself.

Thread Spotlight Section

We have a few threads to spotlight with this issue of TDS.

December 24th marked the 7th anniversary of The Dave Cullen Forum.  We have a section of the forum called "Four Fuckin' Years" which was started on the 4th anniversary of the forum.  Please feel free to drop by any of the threads there, and make posts to discuss any memories you want to talk about.

"Four Fuckin' Years"

Next week will be the first day of the new year.  Each year, forum members post replies to a "survey" of sorts that is called "The 20-- Retrospective Survey".  This is posted each year, and is our own "year in review", where we talk about what we did and maybe did not accomplish this year.

There are already a number of replies up.  If you would like to read what your fellow members here have posted, and perhaps put your own reply up, simply go to the thread, quote the original survey, remove the quote tags, and fill in your answers.  The Survey is in the "A Few Fun Questions" thread.
