TDS Staff would also like to send our holiday greetings to everyone
and we hope that 2013 brings you health, happiness & success.

The 50 Most Powerful Coming Outs of 2012

It's the time of year where you see "countdowns" on various topics, which mark the passing of the old year.  Towelroad.com has compiled their list, a Top 50 Most Powerful coming outs of 2012.

This list is basically people in different fields who have come out of the closet in 2012.  Names on the list represent the worlds of sport (Tom "Bozzy" Bosworth, Orlando Cruz, Wade Davis) news/reporters (Anderson Cooper, Sam Champion) entertainment (Gillian Anderson, Anne Burrell, Denise Ho) and even fictional coming outs ("Mitch" from ParaNorman, Green Lantern).

If you want to check out the complete Top 50 list, just click the link below to go to the Towelroad website.

The 50 Most Powerful Coming Outs of 2012

Top LGBT Heroes of 2012

Examiner.com has put together a small list of three people who they felt were the top 'heroes' to the LGBT community in 2012, and give a brief explanation of why they were picked.

President Barrack Obama made the list for coming out in support for gay marriage in an interview in May.  His original stance was that he wasn't in support of gay marriage, but for civil unions.  He later made a statement that his view on the matter was "evolving" and finally he supported gay marriage, and it even became a platform at the Democratic National Convention.

Frank Ocean is a hip-hop artist, and the world of rap/hip-hop has long been considered a homophobic place.  This year Frank Ocean came out of the closet and many in the industry thought he would get major backlash for his statement.  Instead, his newly released CD was a commercial and critical hit, and he recently received 6 Grammy nominations.

Madonna has long been a supporter of gay rights and gave major support to HIV/AIDS organization and fundraising efforts.  This year while on the world tour in support of her MDNA CD, she had stops in Russia, where she was warned that she could face criminal charges, physical danger and lawsuits if she pushed a "homosexual agenda".  Refusing to back down, Madonna spoke onstage about treating gay people with respect, and passed out gay rights wristbands to the audience.

Top LGBT Political Moments of 2012

2012 was a big year for gay rights, with many political successes for the gay community.  The Huffington Post has created a slide-show for a list of moments that they consider the biggest LGBT politicall moments of 2012.

Some of the moments on their list include:  Negative attention the Ugandan "Kill The Gays" bill received, Prop 8 ruled unconstitutional, gay marriage victories in Washington, Maryland, Maine, DOMA ruled unconstitutional, the GOP's anti-gay platform, Transgender equality in the workplace, and other political moments.

25 Worst Anti-LGBT Villains

Not all countdowns are positive.  Huffington Post has compiled a list that they consider to be the 25 worst Anti-LGBT villians for their activities against the gay community.

Their website hosts a slideshow that contains images of former child-star Kirk Cameron, Chick-Fil-A president Dan Cathy, Mitt Romney, Charles Worley, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, with descriptions of their comments or actions against the gay community.

If you know anyone who you feel can help bring this to fruition (actors, musicians) please PM BayCityJohn with any suggestions or leads in the Phoenix area.

This is a prime excuse for an Arizona gathering.  ;D

Please see the link below for the thread that has been started on this possible event.

Thread Spotlight Section

We continue to spotlight the threads from last week's TDS, with one new addition that needs special mention.

In celebration of Christmas and New Year's, DCF members Lyle (Mooska), Morrobay & MiaIsland have been very actively posting in our Fan Fair thread, sharing multiple images of classic Hollywood icons celebrating both Christmas & New Year's.  Together they have managed to find holiday images of Shirley Temple, Gene Kelly & Fred Astaire, Jane Russell, Yvonne DeCarlo, Jayne Mansfield, The Monkees, and many other classic film & music stars.

The display of these fantastic images starts on page 56 of "Fan Fair" and goes to the current page of 100!  If you want to relive these holiday memories from years gone by, click the link below, which will take you to the first post of this year's holiday postings.  I'd also like to thank Lyle (Mooska), Morrobay & MiaIsland for bringing back some great memories, and spreading holiday cheer in the Fain Fair thread.

"Fan Fair"

December 24th marked the 7th anniversary of The Dave Cullen Forum.  We have a section of the forum called "Four Fuckin' Years" which was started on the 4th anniversary of the forum.  Please feel free to drop by any of the threads there, and make posts to discuss any memories you want to talk about.

"Four Fuckin' Years"

Today is the first day of the new year.  Each year, forum members post replies to a "survey" of sorts that is called "The 20-- Retrospective Survey".  This is posted each year, and is our own "year in review", where we talk about what we did and maybe did not accomplish this year.

There are already a number of replies up.  If you would like to read what your fellow members here have posted, and perhaps put your own reply up, simply go to the thread, quote the original survey, remove the quote tags, and fill in your answers.  The Survey is in the "A Few Fun Questions" thread.

Transgender Teacher Sues Catholic School Over Firing

Mark Krolikowski, 59, taught for 32 years at St. Francis Prep in Queens, N.Y.  He was a music, social studies, & human sexuality teacher and his career was loaded with much praise, including leading his students in a musical performance for Pope Benedict XVI.

Mark is a transgendered person, and last year his appearance (he had grown out his hair and painted his fingernails) caused some parents to complain.  When he was called to the principal's office, Mark informed the principal he is transgendered and intended to start coming to work dressed as a woman.  The principal told Mark (who has not undergone surgery) that he was "worse than gay" and was fired.

Mark's lawyer said that although his client worked for a private, religious school, Krolikowski was still protected under city and state discrimination laws.

Gay Marriage, Affirmative Action, Voting Rights in View

The  Supreme Court took the bench today (1/7/13) and they will be reviewing a number of "hot-button" issues, including affirmative action, gay marriage, voting rights, and government secrecy.

The justices will hear two potentially blockbuster cases in March concerning gay marriage. One of the cases – Hollingsworth v. Perry – addresses whether there is a fundamental right to same-sex marriage. The other – Windsor v. United States – deals with the federal law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Off the bench, all eyes will be on Chief Justice John Roberts when he administers the oath of office to President Obama. Justice Sonia Sotomayor will swear in Vice President Biden. She becomes the first Hispanic to administer an inaugural oath.

Busy Phillips/Michelle Williams Lesbian Rumors

At last year's Academy Awards, Michelle Williams surprised a few people by showing up with Busy Phillips as her 'date' for the evening.  This started people talking about the amount of time the two women have been spending together, and whether or not it was possible the pair were more than just friends.

In an interview with The Advocate, Busy Phillips attempts to put the rumors to rest, by explaining that she and Michelle are very close friends, but nothing more.

Busy Phillips (currently on Cougar Town) identifies as a "married, straight woman" and Michelle Williams was in a relationship with Heath Ledger, and the mother of Matilda Ledger.  She is currently involved with Jason Segel.

Gay Marriage Protest Converges on Eiffel Tower

Hundreds of thousands of people converged Sunday on the Eiffel Tower to protest the French president's plan to legalize gay marriage and thus allow same-sex couples to adopt and conceive children.

The protest started at three different locations throughout Paris, with all the marchers meetting at the Eiffel Tower.  The crowd was estimated at approximately 340,000.

While the general population approves of gay marriage, what is causing the most issues now is the mention of children.  The plan to legalize gay marriage includes the rights for gay couples to adopt children, or conceive them.

Religious leaders have chipped away at the lead gay marriage was having in the polls lately.  It was as high as 65% in favor of gay marriage, and recently has slid down to just 52% in favor.

Vatican Topless Protest

On Sunday the 13th, 4 women went topless at St. Peter's square to protest the Vatican's stance on gay marriage.

The 4 women had painted "In Gay We Trust" and "Shut Up" on their bare backs.  When they were approached by the media, one of the women stated they were taking a stance against homophobia.

The protest took place while the Pope was giving his traditional prayer from the studio window, and didn't seem to be disturbed by it.  Police arrived and took the four women away.

Born This Way Book Based on Blog, Released

Just as the Ultimate Brokeback Forum spawed the Beyond Brokeback - The Impact Of A Film book, another site has just released a book.

The site in question is the blog Born This Way.  The blog features GLBTQ members who wanted to positively affect gay youth, and they began to post their childhood pictures, and give a brief description of their childhoods.  The blog collected what they felt was the best posts, and compiled them into the Born This Way book.

If you would like to see what blog is like, you can find it by clicking the link below.  The layout of the blog matches the look of the book.

Miss USA Pageant Has First Transgender Competitor

Kylan Arianna Wenzel dreamed of being in the Miss USA pageant since she was 11.  However, there was one major obstacle in the way, she was born a boy.

She always felt that she should've been born a woman, and 6 months ago underwent gender reassignment surgery.  The Miss USA pageant has an age limit, and Kylan has reached that limit, making this year the last chance she has on winning the title.

In an interview online Kylan discusses her family's support (and intolerance), and reactions from some of her competitors.

Anne Hathaway Wins Golden Globe

The Golden Globes aired on Sunday night, and you can find news about a lot of various topics.  Whether or not Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were great co-hostesses?  Did Taylor Swift really sneer at Adele when "Skyfall" was named Best Song?  What about Jodie Foster's speech?

Of course, the winners are always big news, and on Sunday night, Anne Hathaway was given the Globe for the Best Supporting Actress, for her portrayal of Fantine in Les Mis.  Many are now saying this makes her a "shoe-in" for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Victor Garber Talks about Argo, Deception, and the SAGs

Victor Garber was best known for the five years he costarred with Jennifer Garner's on ABC's Alias.  He is now on the big screen in the Golden Globe winner, Argo.   In Argo, Victor portrays a Canadian ambassador in Iran who agrees to hide a group of Americans.

He is a four-time Tony Award nominee who has long juggled stage roles in such shows as Deathtrap, Damn Yankees, Assassins and Lend Me a Tenor with parts in movies including Milk, Titanic, and The First Wives Club and steady work in television.

While Victor is perfectly willing to talk about his professional life, he usually is quiet about his private life.  However, he did confirm that when he goes to the upcoming SAG awards, he will be bringing his longtime partner, Rainer Andreesen.  "I don't really talk about it" he says of his relationship, "but everyone knows."

Please feel free to stop by the Planet Heath thread, or the Let's Get Serious About Heath to talk about your memories of Heath, your feelings about today, his career, his movies, and to remember him in general.  There is also a webpage where you can light candles for Heath, and leave brief messages.   If you'd like to do that, please click the link below.

Remembering Jackie (Painted Shoes)

Jackie was a faithful Ultimate Brokeback Forum member, joining our community on January 18th, 2006.  Jackie signed up under the name "Painted Shoes", a screen name that honored her father, a painter who had once painted a water color of Jackie's baby shoes.  Before using her picture as her avatar, she used a copy of her father's painting.

Jackie was a fan of opera, classical music, and movies in general.  She had a soft spot for charities for the blind, and she also would have herself recorded reading the daily news for the blind.

For a long time Jackie was considered the "unofficial greeter" of the forum, making a point of reaching out to new members to welcome them here.  Jackie was very active here, and attended quite a few of the gatherings, including:  BBM Backyard BBQ in Texas, Oscar Night Gathering in Bay City, Michigan, the BBM BBQ in Colorado.  She was also a fan of fan fiction/slash, and attended the Chicago Slash Bash, and the DC Slash Bash.

When Jackie's health was failing, her family reached out to us to keep us informed, and also gave us some of Jackie's ashes.  We had a memorial ceremony in Oxford, UK which was not only attended by a number of Brokies, but Jackie's daughter-in-law, Paula.

If you would like to share some of your memories of Jackie, you can do so in the "Jackie's Friends" thread, linked below.  There is also a page for people to light candles for Jackie, this is also linked below.

Historical Inauguration Speech

On January 21st (the commemeration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day) President Barrack Obama was inaugurated the second time, marking the beginning of his second term as our president.  He had the strong support of women and the gay community during his campaign, and they turned out the vote for him in November.

Barrack Obama was once called "the first gay president" for all he has done to support the gay community, and the Inauguration on the 21st gave both women and the gay community more reasons to appreciate him.  When he gave his speech, this is what he said:

We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall (edit) For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

Aside from this portion of his speech, the gay community had high visiblity on this day.  Richard Blanco on Monday became the first Hispanic and first openly gay man to read the inaugural poem, and a full GLBT band with rainbow flags passed by the President's viewing stand, playing Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory".

Tracy Thorne-Begland Confirmed

In May, House Republicans blocked the confirmation of Thorne-Begland, a former Richmond prosecutor and Navy pilot, to a District Court judgeship.  Thorne-Begland was described by one of the people who opposed his appoinment as "a homosexual activist".  The move by Republicans was widely panned as discrimination.

With his temporary appointment about to expire, the House Republicans changed their mind and allowed his confirmation. The Senate unanimously approved the package moments later, meaning Thorne-Begland will get a full six-year term.

Pentagon Opts Not To Intervene in Ban of Lesbian by Fort Bragg Spouses Club

In December of 2012, an on-base spouses club located at Fort Bragg decided to deny membership to the lesbian spouse of a female Army lieutenant.  NBC News reported Dec. 14 that Ashley Broadway, the newlywed wife of Lt. Col. Heather Mack, was blocked from joining the spouses club at Fort Bragg, N.C., sparking accusations from a national military spouses organization that Broadway was being blackballed only because she is a lesbian.

In a recent development, the Pentagon has stated that it will NOT intervene on this matter, as the directive for "non-federal entities" that operate on U.S. military installations don’t discriminate on the basis of “race, color, creed, sex, age, disability, or national origin.” There is no mention of discrimination based on sexual orientation.

In direct contrast to this, the US Marines have issued their own directive, stating that any entites that operate on bases are not to discrimate against anyone, if they want to remain on the base.

Russia Moves to Enact Anti-Gay Law Nationwide

While gay rights continues to advance in Amerca, and other countries, the gay rights movement is not having as smooth a road in other areas of the world.

In Russia, a vote on new legislation (being called 'ban the gays') is coming up and if it passes, it can impose fines as high as $16,000.00 for infactions to the new legislation.   While it's hard to believe this type of legislation can pass, the move has been met mostly with either indifference or open enthusiasm by average Russians.   Polls conducted last year show that almost two thirds of Russians find homosexuality "morally unacceptable and worth condemning." About half are against gay rallies and same-sex marriage; almost a third think homosexuality is the result of "a sickness or a psychological trauma."

The federal bill's expected adoption comes 20 years after a Stalinist-era law punishing homosexuality with up to five years in prison was removed from Russia's penal code as part of the democratic reforms that followed the Soviet Union's collapse

Many Brokies are familiar with Shawn Kirchner & Ryan Harris, and their CD Meet Me On The Mountain.  We've been fortunate to see many performances of the music on this CD in various states, either on their own, or as a part of Gregory Hinton's Out West program.

BayCityJohn attended the event, and has posted some exclusive pictures in the thread that was set up for the event.  According to John, the evet was attended by nearly 250 people, and aside from the pictures, there's also a link to a YouTube video interview by Shawn Kirchner.

Anne Hathaway Wins SAG Award

Third time is the charm for Anne Hathaway!

Anne was nominated twice before for SAG awards.  In 2006 she was nominated as a part of the cast for Brokeback Mountain.  In 2009 she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Getting Married.  This year, Anne won for her portrayal of Fantine in Les Mis.  This is a role her mother played in the stage production's first U.S. tour.

Anne was up against a formidable field at the SAGs, all of whom are past Oscar winners: Sally Field, who plays First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in "Lincoln"; Helen Hunt, a sex surrogate in "The Sessions"; Maggie Smith, a cantankerous British retiree in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"; and Nicole Kidman, a sultry death-row groupie in "The Paperboy."

Anne also won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role is Les Mis, and is considered a favorite for the Oscar.

Possible Change to Scouting Rule

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has a longstanding national membership restrictions based on sexual orientation. Recently, this has caused the organization to see some consequences.  Both UPS Inc and Merck, longtime donors to the BSA announced that they would no longer contribute to the organization because BSA's restrictions conflicted with their nondiscrimination policies.

On Monday, the BSA announced that different religious and civic groups that sponsor Scout units would be able to decide for themselves how to address the issue — either maintaining an exclusion of gays or opening up their membership.

Protests over the no-gays policy gained momentum in 2000, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the BSA's right to exclude gays. Scout units lost sponsorships by public schools and other entities that adhered to nondiscrimination policies, and several local Scout councils made public their displeasure with the policy.

Smith said that the BSA would not dictate a position to units, members, or parents, "[or] require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent" with that organization's principles or religious beliefs.  This means that some chapters may continue to follow the old policy, while others opt to be more open with their membership. Smith said that the change, if implemented, would allow scouts and their parents to choose a local chapter that best suits their needs.

Ontario's Groundbreaking Premier-Designate

Openly gay woman Kathleen Wynne wins leadership of the Ontario Liberal party, and becomes the Premier-designate of Ontario.  She becomes the first woman, and first LGBT person, to be premier of the province of Ontario.

When Wynne made her victory speech, she thanked her partner Jane Rounthwaite.  "Jane is on the front line," Wynne said. "Raising money, and the keeper of the lists."

When she made her morning speech to the convention, Wynne made the decision to addres her sexual orientation very publicly.  She made mention of head lines that read:  "Is Ontario ready for a gay premier?"  Wynne replied to that question with this quote:  "I do not believe that the people of Ontario judge their leaders on the basis of race, sexual orientation, colour or religion. I don't believe they hold that prejudice in their hearts," Wynne said. "They judge us on our merits."

Pro-Gay Marriage Rally in France Draws Over 100,000

Anti-gay marriage protests had been taking place in Paris in recent days, with a vote looming whether or not to legalize gay marriage in France.  This time, the pro-gay marriage crowd took to the streets, drawing crowds of over 100,000 people, all marching to show their support for give gay couples the right to legally marry.  Police estimate that close to 125,000 showed up, while event organizers estimate the number closer to 400,000.  While the number are impressive, when the anti-gay groups rallied, police estimated their crowd at 340,000,  while event organizers estimated their numbers at 800,000.

While France has remained divided on this matter, President Francois Hollande has made his plans to legalize same-sex marriage in the European country clear.

Fort Bragg Spouse Group Relents, Admits Lesbian Spouse

In last weeks' TDS, I ran a story about Ashely Broadway.  Ashley is the lesbian partner to active Lt. Col. Heather Mack, and she was denied membership to an on-base spouses club located at Fort Bragg.

Recently, the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses (ABOS) has relented, and reversed its initial decision.

ABOS released the following official statement:

After further reviewing the (club’s) constitution, by-laws and internal procedures, the ABOS Board felt that in order to immediately support all military Officer spouses who are eligible for ABOS membership a more inclusive definition of spouse was needed. Therefore, any Spouse of an active duty commissioned or warrant Officer with a valid marriage certificate from any state or district in the United States is eligible for ABOS membership,” the club’s board said in a statement.

ABOS does not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, creed, or sexual orientation. ABOS would like to publicly invite Ms. Broadway to apply for full membership to ABOS. It is and always has been our mission to support all military families.

Catholics Deliver One Million Anti-Gay Marriage Postcards

A leading British Archbishop has distributed one million anti-gay marriage postcards for churchgoers to mail to parliament.

Archbishop of Southwark (Peter Smith) asked that people who are against marriage equality mail the postcards to tell their local members of Parliament to vote against the motion in both England and Wales.  This initiative is being presented as a "last ditch effort" to stop the marriage equality legislation, which could be voted on as early as February 5th.

According to the 69 year-old Archbiship:  "Marriage is and always has been the union of one man and one woman, for love and mutual support, open to procreation.  The fundamental problem with the bill is it will radically alter the meaning of marriage for everyone and therefore undermine the common good."

Super Sized Trouble for Super Bowl Team

Super Bowl team the San Francisco 49ers had recorded an "It Gets Better" video.  Now, after remarks from some of the players, the video has been removed from Dan Savage's website.

Cornerback Chris Culliver put himself in the spotlight doing an interview on Tuesday's Super Bowl media day.  During the interview, Culliver stated that there were no gay players on the 49ers, and that if there were, they should leave.  He also said that he wouldn't welcome any gay players in the lockerroom.

Not long after that, linebacker Ahmad Brooks and tackle Isaac Sopoaga strangely denied their involvement with the "It Gets Better" video project.  Both players denied being in the video, and when the video was played for them, they went on to deny knowing what the purpose of the video was.

As a result of these actions, the video was pulled from the project's website.

French Gay-Marriage Bill Clears First Vote

Paris, France has been the location of numerous protests recently, all regarding the gay-marriage movement.  Both sides of the debate have taken to the streets to show either their support or that they're against the bill.

The controversial bill to legalize same-sex marriage took its first step to becoming law on February 2nd when lawmakers voted in favor of an article that redefines marriage as an agreement between two people rather than between only a man and a woman.  The article was approved by a vote of 249 - 97.

UMP deputy Philippe Gosselin, who voted against the legislation, argued that French voters were not in support of it, but statistics show a growing majority support the bill, with some 63% of people in favor of marriage equality.

Transgender Woman Launches Lingerie Line

A transgender woman has designed a lingerie collection for others who have made the transition from male-to-female.  New York-based Cy Lauz launched her underwear label Chrysalis after she saw a gap in the market.  She set to work fashioning bras with full-cup inserts and seamless panties in a bid to enhance the transgender body.

Cy Lauz felt that many women were unable to find what they needed, and while there were products for cross-dressers and drag queens, she felt that the transgender market needed something different.

The designs will come in various colors, and an e-store is being set up now to handle orders.

From Nowhere to Newfoundland: The Shipping News by Annie Proulx

Annie Proulx's book The Shipping News was published in 1993 (20 years ago this year) and a new online article compares this work to the movie that was based on the book, which was released in 2001.

The story centers around Quoyle, a newspaper pressroom printer, and his life takes some unexpected turns that result in him returning to his homeland of Newfoundland.

A new review of the novel by John Abrahams is online, and while brief, it puts a spotlight back on this work by Annie, for the anniversary of the publishing date.  The site also has links so that you can purchase the physical book, or the e-book that is available.

The release date of the DVD has arrived, and once again, it is #1, this time on the DVD sales chart.

Gay Marriage: Churches Fuel Rebellion

A final attempt by the government to head off widespread opposition from its own MPs to the equal marriage bill looks set to fail after churches insisted they were still not happy with the legislation.

As many as 180 Tories are said to be considering voting against the bill on Tuesday or abstaining, including up to four cabinet members, although the bill is expected to pass because of majority support from Labour and Liberal Democrats.

Last week the Church of England and Roman Catholic church wrote to the 650 MPs saying that their concerns about the bill – including the lack of legal protection – had not changed

Jack Twist, the Opera Version

As you know, there has been much discussion about the opera version of Brokeback Mountain.  The libretto was written by Annie Proulx and the cast has been booked.

The opera will be conducted by Titus Engel and directed by Ivo van Hove with the leading roles of Jack (Tom Randle - left) and Ennis (Daniel Okulitch) cast.

Brokeback Mountain - The Opera will open in Madrid in January of 2014.  Two opera houses in America are interested in acquiring the rights of this production as well.

There is a thread on this event (which would make a great Brokie gathering), and you can find out information here.

Boy Scouts Postpone a Decision

Not long ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced that it was looking to remove the "gay ban" they have in place.  It was originally stated that it while it would not force various "packs" across the county to open their doors to gay members, it would also not force packs to reject gay members.

Many thought the decision would be announced soon, but in a surprise development, the BSA backed off of the statement, saying it needed more time to come to the decision.  It has been suggested  that when the story leaked, the BSA was not ready to stand by a new policy, and with push-back from religious organizations, it was easier to do nothing.

Gay Marriage in the UK - First Hurdle Passed

UK lawmakers took a big step Tuesday toward legalizing same-sex marriage, an issue that has prompted widespread rebellion within Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party.  When the initial vote was taken, the end results were 400 - 175 in favor of legalizing gay marriage.

Before the vote on Tuesday, three top party members went to the press, and published a letter to the Conservative Party in the hopes of getting them to support the measurement.

Lawmakers from the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats supported the measurement.  The Conservatives did not support this, even though the bill has wording which allows religious organizations to not hold same-sex ceremonies if they choose not to.

Gay Marriage in France - First Hurdle Passed

The text below is a direct quote from IngmarNiceBbMt on the current status on the gay marriage movement of his country:

Promising news: in the wee hours of the morning, the French Parliament closed its debate on gay marriage after 11 days of endless and often horrible discussions. All amendments and refusals have been turned down by the left wing majority.

The final vote will take place now next Tuesday, let's keep fingers crossed!

Then the Senate will examine the project (starting on March 18th), and afterwards the whole issue might be rediscussed in Parliament.

But the first step is about to be taken!

Special Offer to Lesbian Couple

A lesbian couple was turned away when they approached a local bakery looking to buy a cake for their wedding ceremony.  The owner (Aaron Kline) said that he never intended on hurting anyone, but had to stand by his religious beliefs.

Disappointment turned to joy when celebrity baker Duff Goldman (from the TV show Ace of Cakes) stepped in and made an offer of a free cake for their wedding day.

The couple, who have not been named, have accepted the offer from Duff Goldman.

Goldman, who recently baked the cake for the inaugural ball, said he is happy to help.  “It involves cake, it involves love, marriage, all things I’m a big fan of.”

Michelle Williams Lost Control on Her Journey Through 'Oz'

Oz:  The Great & Powerful is set to open on March 8th, and the films stars (James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Reisz & Michelle Williams) are making the rounds on the talk show and interview circuit.

In recent interviews, Michelle Williams (nominated three times for Academy Awards) has talked about the differences between filming the independent films she's been fond of and the large budget Oz.  She's remarked that she had a definite feeling of being watched while performing, having to adjust from intimate sets to the grander sets and sound stages of a big film, and the feeling that she was not going to have the control that she usually does in her films.

She has also said that her daughter with the late Heath Ledger is very excited to see Oz:  The Great & Powerful.

Sen. Dibble Plans To Introduce Gay Marriage Bill This Week

State battles over same-sex marriage continue, and one battle looks to be starting sooner than expected.

While talking with Esme Murphy on WCCO Sunday Morning, Minnesota Senator Scott Dibble said he plans to introduce a bill to legalize gay marriage this week.

Sen. Dibble believes this has the momentum to pass after votes after voters defeated an amendment to strength the state's already existing gay marriage ban.

Minnesota state Governor Mark Dayton has said he will sign a bill that legalizes gay marriage if it reaches his desk.

eHarmony Owner: Gay Marriage Damaged My Company

Neil Clark Warren is the owner of e.Harmony and a self described "passionate follower of Jesus."   He claims he wants to have an "understanding" of homosexuals after gay marriage has damaged eHarmony.  Clark's quote on the matter is:   “I have said that eHarmony really ought to put up $10 million and ask other companies to put up money and do a really first class job of figuring out homosexuality.  At the very best, it's been a painful way for a lot of people to have to live.”

eHarmony has been the subject of lawsuits in the past.  In 2008 the site was sued by LGBT singles due to discrimination charges.  In 2010 it was sued again, also due to discrimination.

eHarmony was founded in 2000, and has made over $1 billion in revenues and seen over 500,000 marriages between their members.

Tim Tebow to Speak at Controversial Church

Tim Tebow is a quarterback for the New York Jets. He's received attention in the past not only for his playing, but also for his public displays of his faith in his religion.  He was often photographed kneeling in prayer on the field, which resulted in many people mimicking him and posting it online, an act that became known as "Tebowing".

He is back in the news again, he's accepted an invitation to speak at the First Baptist Church of Dallas on April 28.   The church's pastor, Rev. Robert Jeffress, has taken some unpopular stances over the last couple of years.

When talking about homosexuality, Jeffress has said: "There are a disproportionate amount of assaults against children by homosexuals than by heterosexuals, you can’t deny that," Jeffress said in July. "And the reason is very clear: Homosexuality is perverse, it represents a degradation of a person’s mind and if a person will sink that low and there are no restraints from God’s law, then there is no telling to whatever sins he will commit as well."

He's also made statements against other religions.  In a 2011 interview, Jeffress said that Islam and Mormonism were religions that are "heresy from the pit of hell," and criticized the Catholic Church as "the genius of Satan" and "corrupted" by cults.

Benetton Digital Push Stars Transexual Model

The Benetton Group is a global fashion brand, founded in Italy by the Benetton family in 1965.  Benetton has often used campaigns that catch attention for reasons besides their fashions.  A recent campaign featured an image of Barack Obama kissing Hugo Chávez.

Their latest campaign will feature a disabled German model, and Lea T., who is a transgendered model.

The brand is hoping to build an online community entirely dedicated to colour. A “dynamic” digital platform and app will aggregate user-generated feeds with colour-hashtags, pictures, posts, phrases, from Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter to create magazine-style news.

Ang Lee Wins Best Director

Director Ang Lee took home the Oscar for Best Director on Sunday for his movie, Life of Pi.

There was much talk about Life of Pi early on in the Oscar season, however, as the season went on, other films (including Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln & Argo) started to get more media attention and speculation of Oscar wins.

On top of that, Ben Affleck was getting multiple awards for his direction of Argo.  In the end, Ben Affleck was "snubbed" by the Academy, and Ang Lee won.

Ang Lee is the first person of Asian descent to win Best Director.  He has won Oscars for Best Foreign Film for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Best Director for Brokeback Mountain.

This award season has been all about Anne Hathaway.  The actress has won all the major awards this season for her portrayal of Fantine, and now she can add an Oscar to her list.

This is Anne Hathaway's first Academy award, but it was not her first nomination.  In 2008 Anne was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Rachael Getting Married.

Anne has proved to be a versatile actress, appearing in a wide variety of films such as:  Brokeback Mountain, Love & Other Drugs, Get Smart, The Devil Wears Prada, & The Dark Knight Rises.

Tim Tebow Cancels Appearance

Last week, TDS reported about Tim Tebow booking a speaking engagement at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.   The church's pastor, Rev. Robert Jeffress, had made controversial statements about homosexuals, Mormons and followers of Islam.

Not long after the story broke, multiple negative stories began to appear regarding the event, and Tim Tebow canceled his appearance at the church.

Now, both sides of the story are appearing on the internet.  Gay rights activists are happy with the development, however, other stories about Tim Tebow "betraying the Christian right" are also appearing.

Megachurch Pastor Responds

Pastor Robert Jeffress says that he is surprised by Tim Tebow's decision to cancel his scheduled appearnace at the First Baptist Church of Dallas, and feels that it's related to the firestorm that resulted in the media, instead of the beliefs of the pastor or the position of the church.

According to Pastor Jeffress, the NFL star called him to cancel the appearance, saying that he "needed to lay low and steer clear of controversy" because of both personal and professional issues.  Jeffress went on to say that He also says Tebow never expressed any concerns about the church's doctrine during their extensive conversations with one another.  "He never mentioned anything he disagreed with about our message at all, but he talked about the controversy, and I think it was related to what was going on in his professional career, and continues to go on," said Jeffress.

British Cardinal Resigns

With the Catholic world still reeling from the news that the Pope is resigning, another resignation is announced.

British Cardinal Keith O’Brien has handed in his resignation a day after being accused of “inappropriate acts” with priests.   He also will not be taking part in the vote for a new Pope.  The move leaves Britain without a voting cardinal in the conclave, and is bound to raise questions about other cardinals.  It comes amid a campaign by some critics to urge Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles not to attend the conclave because of his role in moving priests accused of abuse to other parishes.

The resignation comes as speculation about the Vatican is reaching a fever pitch.  Stories around the internet are speculating that the Pope's decision to resign is related to a "gay sex scandal" within the Vatican.  Just a few days ago the Vatican Secretariat of State issued a harsh statement against recent news media reports on the "gay sex scandal".

Last week, Cardinal O’Brien drew different headlines, telling the BBC that the next pope should consider abandoning the church’s insistence on priestly celibacy, and suggesting that it might be time for the papal conclave to choose a pontiff from Africa or Asia, where church membership has been growing

A Focus on LGBT Travellers

A recent survey has showed that the American LGBT community travels more frequently and extensively than the general US population.  Armed with this information, the US State department is putting a focus on providing information specifically geared towards gay travellers, who sometimes face specific risks when visiting foreign countries.

On 20 February, the State Department held a roundtable talk in Washington DC to learn how it might better inform lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens about the practical considerations of travelling internationally.

Some of the topics discussed at the roundtable included:  Safety, security, health concerns, and making sure to carry legal documents  that will allow for medical decisions or parentage and custody of minor children traveling with them, specifically to countries that may not recognize same-sex partners as "next of kin" or legal guardians of children.

The State Department also plans to update its country specific sections – which list general advice, travel warnings and travel alerts – with information relevant to LGBT travellers. The section will note if there have been recent attacks against LGBT-identified people or, more generally, whether local laws permit consensual sexual relations between two people of the same gender..

Thread Spotlight Section

Back in the forum's early days, we had a thread that was titled "Awards Aftermath", where people went to post about their anger, disappointment and other feelings about Brokeback Mountain losing Best Picture to "Crash".  That original thread is locked, as it had reached 500 pages.  The discussion has continued in "Awards Aftermath - Part 2" and with the Academy Awards taking place this weekend, what better thread to spotlight?   Feel free to visit the thread, and revisit your feelings about how the Academy voted, why you think it went that way, and how "Brokeback" has thrived, while "Crash" appears to be forgotten.

Question Of The Week

Last Week's Question:  Is President's Day officially called President's Day?

The federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February is not officially called Presidents' Day.  Instead, it is Washington's Birthday.  There was an attempt in 1968 to officially name it Presidents' Day.  However, this suggestion died in committee.  Many states, however, choose to call their own celebration on this day "Presidents' Day," and many calendars list it as "President's Day."

This Week's Question:  The most recent Academy Awards show put a spotlight on James Bond, with performance by Shirley Bassey & Adele singing Bond theme songs.  How many Bond themes managed to hit the American Top 40 charts?  Can you list them?
