Barilla Boycott After Executive's Statements

On Wednesday (September 25th) Guido Barilla (pictured left) made statements regarding the use of gay people in his company's advertising.  He controls the 4th generation of the family business, and in a recent interview a reporter asked Guido Barilla whether or not he would use gay families in advertisements for Barilla products.  His reply shocked those listening: "For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the basic values of the company.  I would not do it but not out of a lack of respect for homosexuals who have the right to do what they want without bothering others … [but] I don't see things like they do and I think the family that we speak to is a classic family." When pressed about gay people buying his product, he replied with: "Well, if they like our pasta and our message they will eat it; if they don't like it and they don't like what we say they will … eat another." Calls for a boycott were immediate, as were responses from other pasta companies, stating that they support diversity and equality.  Recently, Guido Barilla posted a video apology for his statements. Gay Military Couples Apply for ID Cards

The fights for gay rights have experienced sweeping changes since the repeal of DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell) and DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  One of the biggest changes is that gay military couples are now able to receive the same benefits that straight military couples are.  In fact, gay military couples are getting extra time off to go to states that allow gay marriage, so they can get married and then receive the benefits they are due. A video has been posted that features Senior Chief Dwayne Beebe-Franqui and his husband, Johnathan Beebe-Franqui, on the day that they applied for a military ID card for Johnathan.  The video was posted by the Pentagon and is considered a huge step forward for these military couples. Gay Marriage in New Jersey

New Jersey judge Mary C. Jacobson ruled on Friday that the state can no longer ban gay couples from getting marriage, as it deprives them of the rights the Supreme Court decided on in June.  In response to this, Governor Chris Christie says that he will appeal this decision all the say to the state's Supreme Court.  Judge Jacobson ruled that the state should start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples as soon as October 21st.  It is believed that Christie will see a stay on this decision.  The decision was a rebuff to Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who vetoed a bill passed by the Legislature last year that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry. When Judge Mary C. Jacobson (of the State Superior Court in Mercer County) issued her statement, it read: “The ineligibility of same-sex couples for federal benefits is currently harming same-sex couples in New Jersey in a wide range of contexts.  Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.” When Mr. Christie vetoed the same-sex marriage bill, he urged lawmakers to put the issue before voters. The Democratic-led Legislature declined, saying that questions of civil rights should not be subject to a referendum. Gay Marriage in New Jersey

LGBT Actors Still Face Discrimination

Hollywood is generally considered a liberal area, but apparently there are still biases to be found there. SAG-AFTRA just recently did a survey of their members, and found that  gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender actors continue to face discrimination when looking for work, though opportunities are increasing.  The study also found that more than half of the people surveyed heard anti-gay comments while on set. The findings showed that almost half of gay and lesbian respondents strongly agreed that producers and studio bosses think it's harder to market LGBT performers. About 27% of bisexual participants strongly agreed. LGBT actors still face discrimination

Seattle Tops San Francisco

According to the most recent findings of the Census Bureau, San Francisco is not the city that has the most gay couples, Seattle is. According to the CB's most recent estimations, 2.6 percent of Seattle households are gay couples — the highest percent among the nation’s top 50 most populous cities.  That means “ … about one in every 17 couple households in the city are gay.” San Francisco and Minneapolis rounded out the top three — with 2.5 percent and 2.4 percent respectively.   Seattle took the top spot from San Francisco, which had been the number one city for gay couple households every year since the Census Bureau began counting them in 2000. Apparently residents of San Fran are not pleased with this finding.  One blogger wrote: “ … dumped for Seattle.  Fine.  Go … Perhaps incessant rain is a better backdrop for long-term romance.” Seattle tops San Francisco

Icona Pop Courts Gay Audiences

Icona Pop came to everyone's attention this summer with their smash hit, "I Love It", which topped the Dance chart and Club Play chart, and went on to cross over to the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #7.  The duo is now releasing their debut CD (This is....Icona Pop) and they took time to talk to The Advocate about their hit, the performances they've done at pride events, and being embraced by the gay community. Caroline Hjelt of Icona Pop says:   "The gay community in general has great taste and is usually very good at zeroing in on new things in pop culture, so we’re very happy to be embraced the way we have been." When asked about the possibility of becoming a 'gay icon', she continues: "I would be so happy to be considered a gay icon. It’s funny, we’ve always found ourselves surrounded by the LGBT community, even when we were performing back in Sweden. When we first started performing we were doing shows in little gay clubs, so it always feels like home when we perform for a gay crowd.  It’s where we can really be ourselves." Prisoners Holds Strong!

Last weekend was the opening weekend for Prisoners, which opened at #1.  There was speculation where the film would end up on its second week, with three new films opening (Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, Baggage Claim, Don Jon) and the Ron Howard film Rush expanding to general showings after a limited opening. When all was said and done, only the childrens' film Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 was able to pull ahead of Prisoners.   Prisoners took in another $10,865,262, bringing its domestic total to $38,549,194.  When you add in the foreign total of $6,300,000.00, that brings the movie's total earnings to $44,849,194.00.   With a production total of $46,000,000.00, Prisoners only needs another $1,150,806.00 to 'break even'. With the top movie being a children's movie, and children going back to school on Monday, it's possible that Prisoners could move back to the #1 spot, and earn the rest of this before next weekend Box Office Mojo - Weekend Numbers

Brokie Gathering In Madrid - Brokeback, The Opera





Much discussion has taken place about the opera version of Brokeback Mountain, which is opening in Madrid, Spain.

Many Brokies are making the trip to Madrid and buying tickets for the February 1st showing, so that everyone (while maybe not in the same section) will be at the same showing.

Transgender Professor Told to "Go Elsewhere"

A professor of theology has agreed to step down from his position after coming out as transgender to officials at the Christian university that employed him for 15 years, both parties announced in a joint statement Friday. Professor H. Adam Ackley was formerly Heather Ann Clements, and was in the process of transitioning from female to male, and approached the university regarding changing his name on the university's records, to match up with his evolving masculine appearance.  It was at this point that the university immediately asked him to step down from his position, his attorney said. According to Ackley's attorney, the university only has a code about homosexual conduct, but Ackley has not been involved with any homosexual conduct.   The university issued a statement that reads: "While we appreciate Dr. Ackley’s past service and pray God’s best for the journey ahead, we have reached a mutual agreement that recognizes it would be best for Dr. Ackley to pursue professional endeavors elsewhere."   Ackley says he has received "overwhelming amount of support" from students and colleagues, as well as on social media. Presentation of The Laramie Project Disrupted by Homophobia

On October 1st, the performance of University of Mississippi's (Ole Miss) production of Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project's The Laramie Project was disrupted by a group of college football players, who called out homophobic slurs from the audience.  The play is based on the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student. Cast members recounted being taunted while on stage by the football players, who hurled slurs like "queer", "fag" and others.  It was also noted that when the actor who portrayed Matthew Shepard's murderer took the stage and began to talk of the murder, laughter ensued. Much debate has occurred as to whether or not the offenders (which increased to other audience members, not just the football players) should be punished.  The university issued a statement saying that they are opting not to punish the students, but rather to 'educate' them.  According to the university:  all students in attendance of The Laramie Project on October 1 are required to attend an educational dialogue session led by University faculty and Allies. Cast members are invited to participate as well. The dialogue will seek to repair the harm that was done to the affected community. Dalan and Brandon Get Married

The picture to the left went viral in February of 2012, after the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.  The picture is of Marine Sgt. Brandon Morgan jumping into the arms of his partner, artist Dalan Wells. The pair had know each other, but became a couple while Brandon was deployed overseas.  Their relationship grew through letter writing, and when Brandon came home, he let his emotions take control, and he jumped into Dalan's arms and a photographer snapped the now famous pic, which is actually their first kiss. With their newfound fame, Brandon and Dalan began to do interviews, blogs, video blogs, both against homophobia, and just to let friends and fans know what was going on with their lives. The latest news is that they have now gotten married.  Their wedding ceremony will be in March, but the pair legally married on 10/4/13 in New York State.  The date also happens to be Brandon's birthday.   Dalan and Brandon Get Married

Video Message from a Supportive Brother

David Stevens didn't intend to be an activist, but fate changed that recently. David, who is straight, attended the wedding of his younger brother (who is gay) to his partner.  After the wedding took place, David posted pictures of the occasion on his Facebook page without a second thought. Reality gave David a surprise when he got a message from a long-time acquaintance saying he was defriending him for the pictures of the gay wedding, and his "anti-God" posts.  While David was not initially upset with this development, it did cause him to put himself in his brother's shoes, and how he would've felt if the rejection had come from a close friend or family member, instead of a distant friend.  The result was a 6 minute video posted by David to his blog and YouTube, which went viral and made David an internet sensation. Steve Grand to Perform At GLSEN Awards

YouTube sensation Steve Grand will be on hand to perform his hit "All American Boy" for the honorees of The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network's Respect Awards Oct. 18. Grand, who is openly gay, released his first original song and video on YouTube in July of this year.  It managed to get over 1.5 million views in the first two weeks, and made Grand into an internet star.  This lead to appearances on CNN and Good Morning America, and gave him the title of the first "openly gay country star". Prisoners in the Top 5!

Prisoners continues to do well at the box office, making another $5.7 million dollars this weekend.   This brings the US take for Prisoners to $47,928,432, so with a production budget of $46 million, Prisoners is showing a profit with just the US figures now.  When the foreign totals are added ($14.1 million), Prisoners has made a profit of $16,000,000.00. Actor T R Knight Weds Partner of Three Years

T R Knight is best known as one of the cast of the hit TV show Grey's Anatomy.  While T R did enjoy being on the show, he was asked to be let out of his contract in 2009 (three years early).   Knight was involved with a highly publicized incident that took place during the filming of an episode.  In the incident, costar Isaiah Washington got into a heated argument with Patrick Dempsey and used anti-gay slurs to refer to Knight.  Washington apologized and went through "sensitivity training" but in the end was released from his contract early and left the show. Knight (40) met his boyfriend, Patrick Leahy, in 2010, and they wed on October 4th in upstate New York.  Two of the guests at the wedding were Knight's Grey's Anatomy costars Kate Walsh and Katherine Heigl.   When the incident with Washington had taken place, Heigl was quoted as saying:    "T.R. is my best friend. I will throw down for that kid. I will beat you up. I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings." Road to Gay Marriage in New Jersey Leads to State's Top Court

Same-sex marriage in New Jersey continues to move forward, but just how quickly it will be made legal is up in the air. Lower court Judge Mary Jacobson had ruled that to deny gay people the right to marry was to take part in discrimination, and ruled that as of October 21st the state should begin issuing marriage certificates to same-sex couples.  Governor Chris Christie vowed to veto this, and would fight the ruling every step of the way.   He asked for a stay in the ruling, but was denied, with the judge issuing the statememt saying that a stay :   “would simply allow the state to continue to violate the equal protection rights of New Jersey same-sex couples.” Next stop, the New Jersey Supreme Court.  It was announced on Friday that in January of next year, they will begin to hear oral arguments on this matter.  What is not known at this time is how this announcement will affect the initial ruling, which states that marriage licenses are to begin being issued on October 21st. Iowa College Crowns Transgender Homecoming Queen

At an Iowa campus auditorium it was standing room only as everyone awaited the name of the student to be announced as homecoming queen.  When the name was read, the audience leapt to their feet in a standing ovation, and no one was more surprised than the eventual winner, Steven Sanchez.   Sanchez, 21, was born male but identifies as both male and female. He is Northern Iowa's first transgender homecoming queen or king.  Sanchez, who as a child endured relentless bullying, said the moment left him speechless. He/she has become a crowd and campus favorite, performing at various events as "Lola".  David Pope, a personal friend to Sanchez says that he/she is where he/she is today due to a magnetic personality and a deep reserve of inner strength. Lesbian Couple Charges AT&T With Discrimination

An AT&T spokesperson says the company makes diversity and inclusion a top priority and has received national recognition for its programs and performance.  Well, it looks like someone may not have been paying attention. A lesbian couple went into a store in Riverdale, Utah to upgrade their phone, and they claim that the store's manager asked them to leave, due to their sexual orientation. A group of 24 protestors showed up to make their voices heard, and state that this type of behavior is unacceptable.  Says protestor Christy Cook:  "We just want people to know that it's not okay, this is discrimination.  We are just as equal as anybody else. Equal rights. Treat us the same." An AT&T spokesperson said, "we take allegations of this nature seriously and are investigating the matter." Lesbian couple claims discrimination at AT&T store

Edward Williams Speaks to Fellow Black Gay Men

Edward Williams is currently a 3L at the Georgetown University Law Center. He is a 2009 Teach For America Atlanta Corps Member. He graduated from Howard University in 2009 with a BBA in International Business and Finance with honors. He is an active blogger on the PolicyMic.com site, and through that site he's published numerous articles.  He his also a black gay man, and his most recent article is for all gay black men. The article contains the following:   "...this essay is not an indictment of any particular group, organization, or institution, although I do understand that certain parts may read as such. I hope that instead of a defensive posture, everyone who reads this essay will take a moment to really hear what I am trying to communicate. My thoughts on this topic are deeply personal, and I am choosing to share them as a means of opening an important dialogue with the black gay community, the black community at-large, the gay-rights movement, and the entire nation." Prisoners remains in the Top 10!

Gravity maintains its number one spot on the movie charts, with two new films opening beneath it.  Captain Phillips opens in the number two spot, and Machete Kills opens at number four. Prisoners continues to remain in the top 10, and I will continue to report its take at the box office until it falls to number eleven or higher. For this past weekend, Prisoners pulls in another $3,665,000 domestically, bringing it's domestic totals to $53,620,000, giving the film a total domestic profit of $7,620,000.00 .  When you add in the foreign total of $22,600,000, it brings Prisoners' total profit to $30,220,000.00. Gay Weddings in NJ to Start 10/21/13

The battle for gay marriage in New Jersey is not over, but supporters feel that the final outcome will be in their favor. Governor Chris Christie had vetoed a gay marriage bill in 2012 under the rationale that it was a decision best left to the state's voters.   State legislatures disagreed, saying that the rights of a minority group shouldn't be left up to the votes of a majority.  In September, state Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson issued a ruling that stated New Jersey's ban on gay marriage was illegal, it denied gay couples the rights they were entitled to after the US Supreme Court's decision on DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).  Judge Jacobson ordered that marriages should be scheduled to start on October 21st (yesterday).   Chris Christie tried to get a stay on that ruling, but it was overruled.  He then went to the state's Supreme Court to appeal the decision, and ask that a stay be put in place, to prevent the gay marriages from starting. The NJ Supreme Court denied the motion for a stay, which means the marriages can take place until the case for the appeal is heard in January.  Many supporters believe this is not an obstacle, because if the NJSC believed the cause was to be left to the people, they would have supported the motion for a stay and issued it.  It seems that both supporters and opponents believe the battle is basically over in NJ, and the ruling will be in favor for gay marriage. Anti-LGBT Group Invents Story in Colorado

There has been news coming out of Colorado regarding a transgendered student at Florence High School.  The story starts with a student who was born male, but is transgender and identifies as female.  This student is now using the girls locker room.    The story then evolved, when the Pacific Justice Institute (an anti-gay organization) sent a letter to the high school stating that the student was harassing the girls in the locker room. Cristan Williams at The TransAdvocate spoke to with Superintendent Rhonda Vendetti directly who explained that no harassment took place.  It appears that some parents don't like the fact that the transgender student is using the girls locker room, and when the Pacific Justice Institute was confronted with this fact, they refused to back down, claiming that the school was sacrificing the privacy of the female students. Even though PJI’s claims of actual harassment have been debunked, the group sill insists that the story is true simply because they sent a letter about it and the school didn’t reply — which it has no obligation to do. Indo-American Wedding Goes Viral

As time goes on, same-sex marriages are becoming more commonplace.  However, there are some societies that still do not accept this type of union.  In India, they are still rare and considered as "abnormal conduct" and therefore "frowned upon". That being said, the internet is seeing its latest viral sensation, a ceremony that is being called the first "Indo-American Lesbian Wedding". Shannon and Seema met in 2009, and began dating.  After 4 years together, they decided to wed in a ceremony that blended American and Hindu rituals, and turned out to be a happy occasion for everyone involved.  Most guests gave their blessings heartily and many were left to tears with sheer love and affection that they witnessed. Shannon and Seema asked Steph Grant, a close friend and photographer, to take the pictures of their wedding. "I have been anticipating this wedding for years now! Shannon & Seema are special to me and I am honored that they chose me to be their wedding photographer. I flew into Los Angeles a few hours before the wedding festivities began. Anne Hathaway Hosts Pink Party

The Pink Party is a celebration of women, fashion, friendship and life. For eight years, this event has combined fashion and philanthropy to raise over $8 million to support one of the best hospitals and research teams in the world.  The event was started by Elyse Walker, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer.  By the time it was discovered, she was Stage 4 and terminal. This year's event was hosted by actress and Academy award winner Anne Hathaway.  It was attended by Kate Beckinsale, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, and other celebrities who donated and helped raise funds for cancer research. Scariest Movie Characters

Press and Guide.com is getting in the Halloween spirit, and has published an article which discusses the scariest movie characters.  While it is Halloween-themed, they don't talk about monsters, vampires, Jason, Freddy, zombies, aliens, but rather human characters that they describe as frightening. Their list includes:  Hannibal Lecter (Silence Of The Lambs), Amon Goeth, (Schindler’s List), Annie Wilkes (Misery), and Norman Bates (Psycho). They conclude their list with The Joker, from The Dark Knight, portrayed by Heath Ledger.  When they go into their reasoning behind picking this character, this is what they say: Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance makes Jack Nicholson’s turn in the same role nearly 20 years earlier look ridiculous. Sure, it’s a comic book story, but Ledger makes a sociopath all the more frightening because there’s no reason behind the trail of murder and destruction. Prisoners continues to hang in the Top 10 movies, taking in another $2,000,000.00 domestically.  This brings the film's domestic total to $57,258,393.00, and gives it a $10 million profit on just domestic funds alone.  When you add in the international total of $34,300,000.00, that gives the movie a $44 million profit. Gay Marriage in Hawaii

On Wednesday (October 30th) Hawaii's state Senate voted to overturn the state's ban on gay marriage, starting the process to make marriage legal in Hawaii.  If the bill is approved, as expected, by the state House of Representatives - where Democrats outnumber Republicans 44-7 - Hawaii would become the 15th vote to make it legal for gay and lesbian couples to wed. However, the road to marriage in Hawaii is hardly smooth.  At the moment it is believed that Republicans and Conservative Democrats will try to change the bill by adding protections for organizations to refuse to sell their goods and services to gay couples under the name of "religious protection" Only six states and the District of Columbia recognized same-sex marriage a year ago, but the number has since more than doubled, due in most cases to litigation over the issue.. Russia Bans Tribute to Gay Victims of Holocaust

A group of about 20 residents of Moscow, Russia, applied for a permit to hold a protest against Hitler's actions against the gay community, and to remember those victims.  The intent of the protest was remind people of the past, and ensure that the same crimes are not committed again.  On 31 October, the Moscow government refused to issue the permit. Gay rights activists have called the denial "surreal and absurd". It is said that the authorities rejected the application, saying paying tribute to gay victims of Nazi Germany could potentially ‘influence’ children on homosexuality. In addition, the city government also denied approval of two LGBT rallies. One was to attract attention on the importance of combating homophobia in sport and the other was the need for Russia to join the Schengen Agreement to allow the LGBT community freedom of movement in a single visa. Lesbian Couple Sues for Marriage Equality in Colorado

Dr. Rebecca Brinkman and Margaret Burd have filed suit for the right to wed, arguing that a civil union will deny them key rights and privileges bestowed by marriage equality. The couple went to the Adams County Clerk and Recorder’s office and applied for a marriage license, but instead were given the paperwork for a civil union.  They refused that paperwork, and hired attorney Ralph Ogden, and filed suit Wednesday at the Adams County District Court for the right to wed. They issued a statement through Ogden which said:  "We rejected this offer because civil unions are more akin to a business relationship than to the expression of dignity, love, respect, and commitment that married heterosexual couples enjoy because they are married." In March 2013, the governor of Colorado signed a bill that allowed civil unions for same-sex couples. It went into effect May 1. Jake Gyllenhaal Eyes Role in Southpaw

Hot off the heels of his successful movie Prisoners, Jake Gyllenhaal is looking into a possible new role, a film about a boxer called Southpaw, and he'll be replacing rapper Eminem, who was originally up for the role. Antoine Fuqua will direct the film from a script by Kurt Sutter, the story follows a left-handed prizefighter who wins a title but suffers a tragedy soon after and must put his life back together to earn the respect of his young daughter. Gyllenhaal is setting himself as one of the busier actors in Hollywood.  He has won a bunch of praise for his most recent roles, the #1 film Prisoners as well as the art house film Enemy.  He is currently filming the indie thriller Nightcrawler and will follow that up with Working Title’s Everest. Daniel Okulitch, Bass Baritone who will be playing Ennis Del Mar in the opera version of Brokeback Mountain in Madrid, has posted the quote below on his Facebook page: I'm currently inching my way through learning the score of the opera Brokeback Mountain, premiering in January of 2014 at the Teatro Real, Madrid. I play the lead role of Ennis Del Mar, which those of you who saw the film will remember was played by the late Heath Ledger. The music is arguably the most challenging I've ever had to learn, to say nothing of the dramatic complexity of the character. One bar at a time, I tell myself! Prisoners Falls Out of the Top 10

Six weeks after its release, Prisoners drops out of the top 10 movies, with a big tumble from #10 to #18.  However, the most recent estimates show that the domestic total for Prisoners has reached nearly 60 million dollars after this weekend, giving it a domestic total profit of $14 million. When you add in the foreign totals of $42,400,00, it brings Prisoners' total earnings to over the $100 million mark, and the total profit to $56,400,000.00. Hate Crime Attack

Sasha Fleischman (pictured left) is a high school student who identifies as agender, which means that he doesn't identify as male or female, and prefers the pronoun 'they' to be used when being spoken to.  Sasha chooses to wear skirts as a political statement, and was riding a bus on November 7th. Sasha fell asleep on the bus when Richard Thomas, an Oakland High School student, allegedly boarded the number 57 bus at around 5:20 p.m. Richard set Sasha's skirt on fire, and then fled the scene. Sasha suffered serious second and third degree burns, and Richard was apprehended by the police after they reviewed the surveillance video from the bus. Thomas faces two felony charges of assault and aggravated mayhem, each with a hate crime enhancement. That could result in life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.  It has been reported that Richard admitted to being 'homophobic' and thus given himself a motive for the attack Sasha is currently in the hospital, and while the injuries are not life-threatening, Sasha will face numerous skin-grafting surgeries to heal the burns that were inflicted on Sasha's legs. Skirts For Sasha

Sasha Fleischman is a student at Maybeck High School, and Sasha's fellow students, and faculty, wanted to show support for Sasha.  On Friday both male and female students and faculty came to school in skirts and carried signs that read "Skirts For Sasha". Students who took part in the show of support expressed disbelief that anyone would attack a student while they slept because of their gender identity, or the fact that they were wearing a skirt.  The participants posed for a group shot holding signs which read "we miss you!" and the pictures will be sent to Sasha.  Donations for the costs of the surgeries Sasha will need have been pouring in, and they now exceed $21,000.00. Houses along the bus route that Sasha was on were displaying rainbow flags, another show of support that was called "Rainbows for Sasha". Two of Sasha's classmates went to the hospital to visit after one of the surgeries had been performed, and said that Sasha was in 'good spirits'. Skirts for Sasha

6 States Resist Processing Benefits for Gay Couples

In June, the US Supreme Court struck down part of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) that had prohibited the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.  After that decision came through, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel issued an order that gay spouses of National Guard members be given the same federal marriage benefits as heterosexual spouses. Judith Chedville, a Texas Army National Guard officer, and her wife (Alicia Butler) went to Camp Mabry so Ms. Butler could get her military spouse ID card and register for those benefits on Sept. 3rd, the first day they were allowed to.  After spending most of the morning completing and turning in paperwork, they were told they would need to travel 70 miles to the nearest federal base.   It turns out that 6 states are refusing to issue the IDs from their state bases, and telling gay couples that they must travel to the nearest federal base for the ID, as the state constitution doesn't recognize gay marriage.  Those 6 states are:  Texas Oklahoma, West Virginia, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana. Defense Secretary Hagel has stated these 6 states are violating federal law by behaving this way.  The states say that they are not preventing any couple from getting IDs, they can get the cards from the Federal base, and the states can still honor their constitution, which bans gay marriage.   6 states resist processing benefits for gay couples

Chirlane de Blasio Discusses Lesbian Past

New York's newly elected mayor, Bill de Blasio, won the campaign for Mayor, even though some had openly thought his marriage would be a stumbling block.  de Blasio is white, and his wife Chirlane is black.  Not only that, in the past she identified as a lesbian. 34 years ago Chirlane wrote a piece for Essence, about her coming out process as a lesbian, and now she sat down with the same magazine to discuss her marriage to Bill. She said that when she met Bill, it wasn't the fact that he was a man, or white, that was her main concern, it was the fact that he was 6 years younger than she.  As for Bill, he has said it was "a love at first sight" type of moment for him.  She goes on to say that she was able to fall in love with Bill by "'putting aside the assumptions I had about the form and package my love would come in.' Harper Signs New Dave Cullen Book

Dave Cullen is the Administrator/owner of the Dave Cullen Forum (DCF) and is also known as the author of the best selling Columbine and his many TV appearances regarding the subject of that book. We're happy to announce that Dave's next book, Soldiers First, has had its North American rights acquired by Harper Executive editor Tim Duggan.  The book sold at auction by Betsy Lerner at Dunow, Carlson and Lerner Literary Agency. Soldiers First tells the story of two closeted gay men living life at war under the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. According to the author’s website, the book is based on reporting that he did for a two-part Salon magazine story in 2000. “A decade later, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is still in place,” writes Cullen. “Three of the gay captains I profiled are still on active duty. They are now Lt. Colonels. New Gay Show on HBO

Looking, HBO’s forthcoming series about a group of gay friends in contemporary San Francisco, is the queerest thing to happen to television since Ryan Murphy discovered show choirs. The show’s roster of openly gay talent includes Weekend director Andrew Haigh, who directed the pilot, creator Michael Lannan, and actors Jonathan Groff and Russell Tovey. Outward would’ve been curious about this project whenever it had appeared, but since it comes at a time when, as Willa Paskin recently put it, “TV’s gay men hardly ever get any action,” it’s all the more welcome. A 21-second tease released this weekend reveals that Looking’s characters work out, ride public transportation, shake hands, and kiss—and that they might do so to the sound of The 2 Bears’ “Take a Look Around.” That leaves a few loose ends still to be tied up when the series premieres at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, right after Girls. Massachusetts - 10 Years of Gay Marriage

With the number of states legalizing gay marriage on the rise, it's sometimes hard to believe that just 10 years ago, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage. As more gay couples get marriage (and more states legalize gay marriage), those who are 'on the fence' for this matter begin to come around to the side of those who support gay marriage.  The fact that so many gay people are getting married and nothing negative has happened helps with that matter. As for gay marriage opponents, they've had to change their tactics.  10 years ago, they rallied others to their side by saying that marriage was under attack, and that allowing gay marriage would threaten traditional marriage, and destroy the family unit.  These threats/predictions never came to pass, so now they are claiming that school curriculums and religious objections are now being attacked. Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, said 38 percent of Americans will live in states where same-sex marriage is legal once Illinois’s governor signs the bill on Wednesday. 50 Shades of Herpes?!?!

As most (if not all) of you know, DCF has an active slash/fan fiction area, with numerous stories, short stories, poems, being inspired by and written about Jack & Ennis.   Fan fiction is not a new concept, and slash stories have been written about Batman/Robin and Spock/Kirk, as well as other pairings. Recently, a fan fiction story grabbed headlines when it was published and became a best seller, the trilogy that starts with "50 Shades of Grey", which was originally based on the Twilight saga.  A major motion picture is now being shot, based on the book. "50 Shades" is back in the spotlight, but not for a good reason.  Researchers in Belgium wanted to test the cleanliness of library books, and took a copy of "50 Shades" to test the pages and see what they could find.  The book tested positive for cocaine residue, and well as the herpes virus. The professors who conducted the study have cautioned the public, saying that the amounts of residue found are not enough to make anyone high, or enough to infect anyone with an STD. 50 Shades library book tested

Star's Show Suspended After Gay Slur

Star Alec Baldwin has a talk show that airs on MSNBC, but for the next two weeks that show is suspended after Baldwin had a run in with a photographer, and shouted a gay slur at him. Baldwin's show has not been getting the ratings as expected, and he was also dealing with a stalker who had just been arrested.  When he was confronted by reporters and photographers, he went on a rage and started swearing at them.  At one point, he turned to a photographer a "cock sucking fag". At first MSNBC gave no response, but later they announced that they were suspending the show for two weeks.  Alec Baldwin later issued a statement. “I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have – and for that I am deeply sorry.  Words are important. I understand that, and will choose mine with great care going forward. What I said and did this week, as I was trying to protect my family, was offensive and unacceptable. Behavior like this undermines hard-fought rights that I vigorously support." Baldwin show suspended after anti-gay slur

Liz & Mary Cheney Fight Over Gay Marriage

Liz Cheney is the Republican candidate running for Senate in Wyoming, and daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney. Her younger sister is Mary Cheney, and Mary is also a lesbian. In a recent interview regarding her run for Senate, Liz Cheney was questioned on her sister Mary, and Liz's stance on gay marriage. Liz went on to say that she does not agree or support gay marriage.  She claims she supports gay rights, stating she agrees with hospital visitation, life insurance beneficiaries, medical coverage, and things of that nature, but when it comes to marriage, she and Mary "don't agree". Mary Cheney and her wife Heather Poe (after hearing the interview) posted this response on their Facebook page: “Liz – this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree, you’re just wrong – and on the wrong side of history.   Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when we got married in 2012 – she didn’t hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us. To have her say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least.”  Liz Cheney shrugs off lesbian sister’s call for marriage rights: ‘We disagree’

Marine Waitress Denied Tip for "Lifestyle"

A waitress (Dayna Morales) in NJ who works for Gallop Asian Bistro waited on a family of four at a table.  Everything was fine until she picked up the bill.  They had left a message for Morales on the bill which read:   'I'm sorry, but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life.' Outraged, Morales sent the insulting note to the Facebook page for the LGBT blog Have A Gay Day.   The end result was that (to date) Morales has received $2,000.00 from complete strangers to make up for the tip she didn't receive.   Also, her boss is standing behind her on this matter.  There have been stories in the past of servers making notes left on bills public, and being reprimanded at work.  Rather than a reprimand, Morales' boss issued a statement saying the family that left the insulting note is not welcome back in their restaurant.  Going a step further, the restaurant has said that they will match all the donations Morales receives, and donate them to a local LGBT organization. Stephen Ira Beatty In PSA

Stephen Ira Beatty was born Kathlyn Beatty, the daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening.   Since transitioning from Kathlyn to Stephen, he has appeared in two Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for transgendered people. The first video was in July 2012, he appeared in WeHappyTrans.com’s 7 Questions Project, where transgender talk about role models, support systems and how they transitioned from one sex to another. The latest video is called "Healthcare For All", and is sponsored by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).  The video is bringing attention to the point that a New York State Medicaid regulation that bars transgender people from accessing health care. Illinois Legalizes Gay Marriage

Illinois governor Pat Quinn signed marriage equality into law on November 20th, making his state the 16th to legalize same-sex marriage.  They were almost the 15th state, but Hawaii beat them to the punch, legalizing gay marriage on November 12th. This brings the number of states that legalized gay marriage this year to 6. President Barrack Obama was pleased that his home state passed the law, saying:   “As I said in my Inaugural Address last January, our journey as a nation is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well,” Other states have legal battles that could force other states to follow suit soon.  There are 10 states that have same-sex couples bringing suits against the states for banning same-sex marriage, and the decisions of cases could put more states into the total of those who passed/approved gay marriage.  Those states are:   Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, West Virginia. Cheney Feud Reflects GOP Divide

The feud in the Cheney family (sparked by Liz Cheney's anti-gay marriage opinions despite having a lesbian sister who is married to her partner) continues to get headlines in the news, and many are saying that it reflects the GOP's stance on the issue. The feud started when Liz Cheney, running for Senate in Wyoming, made statements saying that she didn't support same-sex marriage, but did support other gay rights issues.  This angered her sister, Mary who is a lesbian and married to her partner, Heather.  The two of them took to Facebook to reply with their own statements, putting their family issue into public view.   Most recent statements from Mary and Heather indicate that Liz will not be at their home for Thanksgiving, nor will they attend family Christmas celebrations at Liz's home.  Parents Dick Cheney (former vice president) and Lynne Cheney state they regret this family matter going public. Many are seeing this divide as representative of what is happening with the Republican party (GOP) as a whole.  Younger members of the party strongly support gay marriage, while far-right conservatives oppose it.  In April, the party as a whole at the Republican National Committee approved by voice-vote a package of resolutions that included a measure reaffirming the party’s opposition to same-sex marriage.  Recently, some Republicans currently in office have started to come forward in support of same-sex marriage, including Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)..   Cheney feud reflects GOP Divide

Transgender Day of Remembrance

On November 20th, states across the US held gatherings to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance, a solemn event to remember transgendered men and women who were attacked and killed, simply because they were transgendered. Many of the events contained candlelight vigils, and a list of names of transgendered people from around the world was read, of them killed because they were transgendered. Denarii Monroe, a graduate assistant at PACE University’s LGBTQA & Social Justice Center, noted that New York “has it a lot better” but emphasized the value of confronting the transphobic discrimination that does occur.  “It’s important to recognize it exists and to fight it, because without it stuff like this is going to keep happening.” In Cleveland Ohio, the gathering was more somber than usual, as one of the names was Cleveland resident Cemia "Ce Ce" Dove Acoff.  "Ce Ce" was picked up by a straight man, and when he found out she was born male, in a rage he stabbed her 40 times, weighted her body with a cement block and threw it into Olmstead Township Pond. Jake Gyllenhaal's Strange Instincts

Jake Gyllenhaal may have moved on to his next project, but he's still getting attention for his portrayal of Detective Loki in his last hit movie, Prisoners. Jake recently took part in a recent installment of the Envelope Screening Series which was moderated by Times film reporter Steve Zeitchik.  Zeitchik asked Jake about working with Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve and how he came to develop this physical tic that Loki had. "I get these strange instincts when I'm reading something," Gyllenhaal said. "And one of those things in this movie, when I read the script … I had this feeling of this blinking. I don't know really where it came from. I try a lot of things with Denis. He allows that. It is why he's so extraordinary. He creates a space that's safe, which is why I think he got such incredible actors to be a part of this process." The most recent numbers for Prisoners show that the movie did over $60 million domestically, and when you add in the foreign totals, the official box office total for Prisoners climbs to nearly $166 million. Wyoming Struggles to Become A Filming Location

This weekend is the nationwide release of Alexander Payne's film, Nebraska.   This release is a moment of excitement for film lovers in the state of Wyoming, as a few scenes of the film were shot in Johnson County.   The state of Wyoming would like to attract more filmmakers to the state, but it has failed to do so.  Many speculate that the state has too few tax credits, not enough people who are trained for the filmmaking industry, and a lack of necessary production equipment.  This causes the entertainers and their troupes go elsewhere. The popular television series “Longmire” has deep Wyoming roots but films in New Mexico.  2005's Brokeback Mountain was set in Wyoming, but filmed in Canada. Johnson County was overrun by 12 semis worth of equipment and more than 70 members of the “Nebraska” crew when the production came to Wyoming last year. The filming was not only a boon to the Buffalo economy; it landed a few locals on the set and in the film. Angela Jarvis, executive director of the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, said she would welcome film making crews with open arms, but Wyoming doesn't have the equipment necessary, nor the skilled employees to run the equipment. The 10 Best Adapted Screenplays Ever?

The website TimesUnion.com has posted a list they've come up with, that comprises (in their opinion) the Top 10 best adapted screenplays.   Their list is topped by One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.  They opted to make the number three entry Brokeback Mountain. They go on to ask readers to give their opinion on the list, or to add entries they felt should be on the list.  One reader posted that Brokeback should NOT be on the list: Brokeback Mountain’s directing was awful. The only way you knew that years passed in the movie was that Ledger’s kids were much older and the characters had gray hair. How about some lettering that states, “10 years later”. Bob Harper Comes Out

Bob Harper rose to fame on the TV show The Biggest Loser.  The show has overweight contestants competing against each other to see who can lose the most weight, and Harper is one of the trainers who helps them to reach their goals. It was long rumored that Harper is gay, but he has never confirmed this himself until recently.  Harper says that he always knew he was gay, and came out to family and friends at 17, but felt no real need to discuss this on the show, until meeting contestant Bobby Saleem.  While talking with Saleem, Saleem revealed he is gay, and from a Catholic family, which made it very difficult for him to feel comfortable about coming out to his father. "I want to show Bobby that he doesn’t have to live in shame," Harper said, telling Saleem, "Being gay doesn't mean that you are less than anybody else. It's just who you are." Bar Mitzvah Speech Supports Gay Marriage

Duncan McAlpine Sennett is a member of  Portland's Congregation Beth Israel congregation, and he was making his Bar Mitzvah.   Part of the ceremony is a d’var Torah,  an analysis of the text of the Torah.  For the ceremony, you choose a part of the text, analyze it, and reflect on how it affects your life. Sennett stood to give his d'var Torah.  He had choose from the book of Genesis, specifically the story of Jacob, and how he choose Leah and Rachel to be his brides, even though they were sisters, and his first cousins. He paralleled this to his life by stating that what we consider "traditional marriage" today is vastly different from "traditional marriage" in biblical times, and used the opportunity to express his support for gay marriage.  He went on to talk about how his family is friends with numerous same-sex couples, and his attending not only same-sex marriages, but rallies against Prop 8 as well. Cyd Zeigler - I'm Glad I'm Gay

Cyd Zeigler He is a former sports editor for Genre Magazine, former associate editor for the New York Blade, and has written for Playboy, MSNBC, CNN, New York Press and Out Magazine. He has appeared on ESPN, Fox Sports Radio, CNN, MSNBC as well as contributing to Sports Illustrated, Logo and the New York Times. In 1999, Zeigler and Jim Buzinski founded Outsports.com.     An article that Zeigler has written is making the rounds on the internet, a work titled "Thank God I'm Gay".  The article is written as a 'letter' to God, where Zeigler talks about all the positive things that have happened in his life, and how being gay has been a great experience for him. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Gets Kinky

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a huge draw, getting millions of viewers and considered a tradition on Thanksgiving.  The parade includes giant balloons, floats, bands, costumed characters, and celebrities.  One of the floats this year featured performers of the Broadway play Kinky Boots, which is an award winner.  The play centers around a straight-laced shoe-factory owner, who partners with a drag queen to save his failing shoe company. While the show was a critical hit, social conservatives disagreed with seeing the float in the parade, which featured drag queens.  Although the show's message is of acceptance and tolerance and the performance was relatively tame (honestly, it was way too cold to show very much skin!), right wingers across America took to social networks to voice their outrage at NBC for broadcasting it. Rather than be cowed by the controversy, however, the show's Tony-winning star Billy Porter and some of his cast mates marched over to Macy's the day after their performance in the parade and proceeded to do some Black Friday shopping. The kicker? Almost all of the male actors were outfitted in their sky-high stiletto boots and Porter was in full drag. Ang Lee Discusses Tiger Incident

Ang Lee's Life Of Pi was a critical and box office hit, and the eventual winner for best director.  After all this time has passed, a controversy has come to light that Ang Lee has opted to speak out about. It is now being alleged that the set for Life Of Pi was not safe for animals, and that one of the tigers used for the film nearly drowned.   The Hollywood Reporter broke an investigative report that included an email from an on-set monitor, Gina Johnson. "It was an accident," Lee told Taiwan's Central news Agency. "The crew worked hard to rescue the tiger and then showed him a lot of care, giving him five-star treatment." Johnson left the American Humane Association after THR published the report. The AHA has disputed claims made in the article about unsafe working conditions for critters on site, and a spokesman for Fox, the film's distributor denied the charges. December 1st, World AIDS Day

This week’s Sunday Spotlight gives the stage to U2 frontman Bono, who has been a leader in the global fight against AIDS for more than a decade. Helping “This Week” mark World AIDS Day, Bono sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos to talk about the dramatic turnaround in the battle against a virus that has killed more than 25 million worldwide since 1981. Bono goes on to discuss antiretroviral drugs and their decrease in cost, political motivations with  PEPFAR and The Global Fund, great results that have been achieved, and fears of complacency, and hopes that (to quote Bono):  “There’s a chance of having the first AIDS-free generation by 2015, 2016. Nelson Mandela And LGBT Rights

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Mandela died on December 5th of 2013. Mandela not only worked for racial equality, but was also a strong supporter of the LGBT community.  He supported marriage equality for over 20 years, and spearheaded banning anti-gay discrimination in South Africa.  As a direct result, South Africa become the first country in Africa and fifth in the world to recognize marriage equality in 2006. His public support of gays included appointing openly gay people to high positions at a time this was not a general practice. While his support was not perfect (he was very slow to act on AIDS, which is rampant in Africa) he was a very strong supporter, and we mourn his passing. Cleveland Transgender Community Rocked By Murders

On November 22nd, the city of Cleveland marked Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the community came together to remember Cemia "Ce Ce" Dove, a 20-year-old transgender woman, who was killed in an apartment in Olmsted Township by a man who thought he had arranged a date with a woman. Just a few short weeks after this event, the community is rocked by two more deaths, two more transgender women have been murdered. On Thursday,  Betty Skinner, a 52-year-old disabled resident of a senior apartment complex in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood, was found dead in her bed of an apparent homicide. She had head injuries.  The next day (Friday) Brittany Stergis was found shot in the head inside her car off West 25th Street, near some local clubs. There have been no arrests in either case, and Cleveland police said Saturday there is no indication the incidents are related.  Department spokesperson Det. Philly Teacher Fired for Gay Marriage

Michael Griffin (on right in the picture) was a teacher for over 12 years at the Holy Ghost Preparatory School, teaching French and Italian.  Michael is gay and has lived with his long-time partner for years, and they had a civil union about 5 years ago.  He has always been open and honest with the school's administrators, they all know his is gay, and he never had any issues with them about this. This changed on Friday (12/6) when he applied for a marriage license. Pennsylvania does not recognize gay marriage, so he and his partner went to nearby NJ to apply for a marriage license.  He had sent the school administrators an email to let them know he'd be in Friday, but would be late, and told them why.  To his surprise he was terminated. Says Holy Ghost Preparatory School President Father James McCloskey:  "Unfortunately, this decision contradicts the terms of his teaching contract at our school, which requires all faculty and staff to follow the teachings of the Church as a condition of their employment.  In discussion with Mr. Griffin, he acknowledged that he was aware of this provision, yet he said that he intended to go ahead with the ceremony. Regretfully, we informed Mr. Griffin that we have no choice but to terminate his contract effective immediately." Griffin said he has not decided whether he will discuss his termination with a lawyer, but was incredibly saddened by the administrators' actions. Teacher Fired For Gay Marriage

Waitress Fired, Starts to Return Donations

Dayna Morales started a firestorm last month when she claimed she had been stiffed on a tip because she was a lesbian.  She posted an image of the check with a scrawled message that said she couldn't be tipped because of her 'lifestyle'.  She posted the image to the "Have A Gay Day" Facebook page, and the story went viral, which resulted in Dayna opening a PayPal account where generous strangers sent funds to make up for what she didn't receive.  She said funds would be donated to Wounded Warriors, as she was a Marine. The story took a strange turn when the family accused of homophobia stepped forward with their receipt and credit card statement, which showed they did tip her.  Since then, people who know Dayna have stepped forward with information that shows she is known for lying, one person calling her a "pathological liar".  A rep from Wounded Warriors then stepped forward to say they had not received any donations from Dayna. The most recent page in this story finds that Dayna has been fired from the restaurant, and that she has been using PayPal to return the donations made to her. Jake Gyllenhaal Shows Off Injury

Last month the news was full of stories of Jake Gyllenhaal and how he got injured on the set of his new movie, Nightcrawler. Jake was filming a segment of the Ellen DeGeneres show, and Ellen turned the conversation to Jake's injury.  In typical Jake form, he suggested he hurt himself while looking for Ellen and trying to get her attention, and banging on a gate. Jake did answer the question for Ellen:   "A mirror broke in the middle of the scene; I hit a mirror and it broke. And it cut my hand... I was in the middle of a scene and then I cut it and had to go to the hospital... Do you want to see it? It's gross." Jake Gyllenhaal shows off injury on TV

Vin Diesel Wants Ang Lee

Action star Vin Diesel has (for the past year) been connected to a movie version of the 70s TV cop show Kojak.  Production has not started for the film, and a director has not been picked yet, but Vin Diesel has been talking to fans via Facebook to answer questions regarding the project.   One fan posed a question to Diesel, asking where he would like the film to be shot, and who would he like to direct it.  Diesel replied with three phrases:   Kojak....New York....Ang Lee. Brokie Gathering In Madrid - Brokeback, The Opera




Much discussion has taken place about the opera version of Brokeback Mountain, which is opening in Madrid, Spain.

Many Brokies are making the trip to Madrid and buying tickets for the February 1st showing, so that everyone (while maybe not in the same section) will be at the same showing.

8 Year "Brokie-versaries" Start This Month

December 9th marked the 8th anniversary of the release of the movie Brokeback Mountain.  This also means that the 8th anniversary of the Dave Cullen Forum is coming up, and many members here consider their first time seeing the movie or their date joining the forum their own personal "Brokie-versary". In the Four Fuckin' Years section of the forum we have thread titled 6th Anniversary of Brokeback Mountain, and the Ultimate Brokeback Forum! which has also become the home of posts for the 7th anniversary, and now people are posting there for the upcoming 8th anniversary. India Moves In The Wrong Direction

The people of India have begun protesting after the Supreme Court decided to reverse the 2009 decision to decriminalize private sexual acts between consenting adults.  This means that as of Wednesday, December 11, 2013, gay sex is now illegal in India. The timing is ironic, because it happened at the same time that Queen Elizabeth cleared the way for same-sex marriage in the UK.   Section 377 (the original ruling) dates back to 1860 and this was during the time of British rule of India. The exact wording of Section 377 reads: "377. Unnatural offences—Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine." According to the Supreme Court, the 150-year-old law, criminalizing gay sex, "does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality,"  . India moves in the wrong direction

Australia Overturns Fledgling Same-Sex Marriage Law

December 7th marked the first day that gay marriages could be performed in Australia.  In the 5 days that the law was in effect, 20 couples (including Western Australian politician Stephen Dawson, right, kissing his new husband Dennis Liddelow) were married.  Just five days later, the law was overturned, and this automatically invalidated the 20 marriages. Australia's conservative national government had challenged the law in the High Court on the grounds it conflicted with federal law. On Thursday, the court upheld the challenge and unanimously decided that the ACT law was invalid. Rodney Croome, the National Director of Australian Marriage Equality, issued a statement:  "This is devastating for those couples who married this week and for their families.  This is just a temporary defeat.  What is far more important is that the ACT's law facilitated the first same-sex marriage on Australian soil and showed the nation the love and commitment of same-sex couples." Majority of Americans Support Trans-Inclusive ENDA

A current hot topic in the US right now is the inability to pass the ENDA Bill.  ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act) is being held up with House Leader John Boehner, who refuses to have the House of Representatives vote on it.  This legislation passed the Senate by a vote of 62-32.  ENDA makes it illegal to discriminate in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity by employers with at least 15 employees.  Out of the 50 states, there are currently 29 where it is legal to fire someone for being gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered.  Some have speculated that it is the addition of "gender identity" to the verbiage which is making it difficult to pass. On the plus side, according to recent polls, 66% of the American public believe that it should be illegal to fire someone for their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.  The age group that supported this most strongly was from 18-29 years of age. When questioned on this legislation, House Leader John Boehner said he sees “no basis or need” for the legislation. Majority of Americans support Trans-Inclusive ENDA

N.J. Senate Approves Bill

In 1984, the state of New Jersey passed a law that required the state Health Department to issue a new birth certificate to people who have undergone gender reassignment surgery. While this helped transgender individuals who underwent sex-change operations, this didn't help other transgender individuals who opted not to have surgery, or explored other options, such as hormone therapy. On December 12th, the Senate approved a bill that will now require the Health Department to issue new birth certificates to anyone who has gone through any clinical process to alter their gender.  This means that transgendered people who have opted not to have surgery, can now get new birth certificates with their preferred gender listed on it.  The person's licensed health care provider would have to sign a form vouching the treatment had taken place, according to the bill. Joseph Vitale (who sponsored the bill) said:  "Birth certificates always have been a means of how we traditionally identify a person. In the transgender community, it doesn't reflect who they are mentally spiritually and in every other way but physically.  They don't argue what they were then, but they are  not that person now." The Von Trapps and A Different Maria

As you all know, a live version of The Sound of Music was aired, and featured Carrie Underwood in the role of Maria.  While everyone agreed that Carrie's singing was on mark, social media was alive with the sounds of snark as pretty much everyone blasted Carrie's acting ability. It's now come to light that the Von Trapp family was not pleased with the choice of Carrie Underwood.  Myles von Trapp Derbyshire, the great grandson of Maria von Trapp, expressed his disappointment in NBC's casting to ABC News.  “It’s just upsetting that this could potentially be the final broadcast of our story,” he said. “And although her voice is amazing, she doesn’t have acting experience ... It’s just the overall image, she’s a country star, she won ‘American Idol,’ she’s very public in kind of a tabloid way.” He went on to say that the family had gotten together on their own to discuss who they would want to play Maria, and the unanimous choice was Anne Hathaway.  “Here’s someone who just won an Oscar for a similar situation [in "Les Miserables"]. She was able to act and sing,” he told ABC. His aunt, Francoise von Trapp, even blogged about the casting decision a few days before the live show. "Carrie Underwood as Maria? Seriously? I mean, I have nothing against her personally -- she's an extremely talented country singer, but I'm pretty sure my father is repeatedly rolling over in his grave."
