These are artworks in the middle of the fields and forests.
The chessboard symbolizes the fact that so many "peasants" had to give their life for the "king", were sacrificed in former times.
In German, we call this "Bauernopfer" - sacrifice of the peasants.
Meaning (when you play the game) that you'd rather lose one or several peasants in order to protect your king and not lose your match/game.
