On Day 1 of the bus trip, a Saturday, we boarded the bus just after 5:30 AM at the terminal, since it had to make four other stops, spaced half an hour apart. Our bus was scheduled to leave at 6:00, but the bus company prefers people to be early, and we were. There were 28 paying customers total on the bus, so it was a little over half full, which is nice for spreading out. After making the other four stops by 8:00 and heading east on the Turnpike to the first town, we had breakfast at an Eat 'n' Park, which offers either waitress service or a breakfast buffet.
Saturday was spent driving through Pennsylvania and the north part of New Jersey, and going across the south part of New York State. We saw the skyscrapers of NYC in the distance as we crossed the Tappanzee Bridge. Then we entered Connecticut and spent the night in Danbury, at a LaQuinta out in the middle of nowhere, which was attached to an Outback Steak House. The tour company gave each of us a $25 gift certificate for the Outback, since it was the only restaurant available nearby.
On Day 2, Sunday, we passed through a corner of New Hampshire and entered Maine itself. We took a side trip through downtown Portland, ME, where most businesses were closed on Sunday except for some shops and eateries down by the water. The main food advertised was lobster, but two of the three people in my small group (including myself) can't eat shellfish, so we found the Elevation Burger restaurant (100% Organic Beef) which is shown on the right side of the picture below. The burgers were delicious!
Afterwards we found time to shop at the Shipwreck & Cargo shop on the left; I think that's where I bought my two new T-shirts, one with embroidered sailboats and one with pictures of several "Lighthouses of Maine."
