The overturning of Roe v. Wade really has brought out the crazies. Now I understand a pregnant women in Texas (where else?) is fighting a ticket she got for driving alone in an HOV lane by claiming that her unborn child counts as a person, so she wasn't alone in her vehicle.

I saw that online last night, it will be interesting to see if she actually wins.

I saw that online, too. That woman is a total Karen.

Judges better slam this down quickly unless they want copycat lawsuits ad infinitum all over the country.

High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, also known as carpool or diamond lanes, are designed to get other people out of driving their own cars into shared vehicles and reduce traffic on our highways. A fetus can't drive nor are they taking up any additional space. It's not in the spirit of the law to let pregnant women drive by themselves in a carpool lane. Wasting time and money in courts for this kind of thing just so this Karen can avoid having to drive in the lanes she's required to is asinine. Anyone trying this should have an extra fine imposed.

This isn't the first time this has happened. I recall several instances over the years with a case like this. One judge just laughed at the plaintiff and threw her out of the courtroom for wasting his time. Jeff is right that it's a thing again because of the Supreme Court Ruling.

And you know that the Religious Right groups will support her.

^^^ Blinded by their own dogma... as sure as hell.   What's next?  The bible-thumpers will be declaring any woman's eggs and any man's sperm theirs to command as well?  But wait... they already do - at least for those folks they deem "acceptable..."  *@(@* @

And now they're headed somewhere where "you can check in any time you want, but you can never leave", so there's poetic justice.

Of course, another thing is, What's going to happen to childless couples who were looking to IVF to have children? Are all those fertilized eggs in the petri dish persons?

Texas is trying to overturn the Affordable Care Act (yes, again). Because apparently that pro-life thing applies to the HIV and HPV viruses:

So while they are cherry picking - let's add coverages for metformin, asthma inhalers, insulin, blood-pressure, Alzheimer's and a host of other disease prevention drugs and measures to their listing.  I want my religious freedom to object to anything "I" don't like (or moreso, want to pay for) too.  Who's to say, "that's not MY sincerely held religious belief??"  All this is more BS A.Scalia warned the country about that there has to be a line and it's a very dangerous cliff.

Let'm all just fend for themselves and make due.  These &diety damn "religious freedom" BS fanatics want to have their cake and eat it too.  MF! I say we should cut off ALL federal $$$ (including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Highway, disaster, ....)  for everything going to every damn one of those states and let'm suck on that sink hole for a while.  They will be fleeing those back-water swaps quick-enough.

What is truly bizarre about the notion that you should not fund medications which would allow other people to "sin" is that it both negates the notion of forgiveness and casts aside the whole "love your neighbor as yourself" notion.

Taking their documents at face value the entity which they claim to be following forgave prostitutes and sent them on their way with a "go and sin no more" admonition. If this is your belief structure why wouldn't you want people to remain healthy so that they could seek forgiveness, if that's what you believe the ultimate goal is. Their application of the doctrine lacks internal logic.

Likewise, if you believe that you should "love your neighbor as yourself" aren't you wishing illness on yourself if you wish it on your neighbor? Of course maybe the people who follow this logic (or lack thereof) believe they are part of an elect and the "sinners" are already damned. But if that were the case then it would do no further harm to allow them medication. It baffles me.

Yes, they seem to have missed that part of the Gospel. That seems to be a besetting sin among these people.

That crossed my mind early in the pandemic when, against my better judgment, I took my father to a farmers' market because he really wanted to go. Many of the stands in the market are operated by "Plain" people, Amish and Mennonites. Only two young Mennonite women were wearing any protection (those face shields). None of the others were wearing anything. I so wanted to say to these people, That's OK if you believe God will spare your life from this terrible sickness, but shouldn't you be wearing a mask out of love for your neighbor?

why am I not surprised by this?   The narrow-mindedness and bigotry never ceases to amaze me.

Well exactly. It's sad really.

None of the others were wearing anything.

That sounds more like the Doukhobors instead of the Amish and Mennonites.

^^^ It's called "cherry-picking the scriptures".

These bat-shit crazy religious fanatics just love to cherry-pick Bible scriptures and then equate only those they want into their religious dogma they spew forth as "religious freedoms".  This "religious freedom" BS can be used against anything anyone does not like and/or agree with.  That's why it is so dangerous warned A.Scalia.  Eventually it leads to a bunch of religious fanatics in control aka a Taliban-like situation. Don't think that can happen here in USA?  Best think again.

Part of the problem is few to no one, so far, has been or is willing to stand up to these asswipes and draw lines saying this is where your BS "religious freedom" starts and stops.  Which is IMHO, is literally at the end of your outstretched fingertip from your body.  What you do for yourself is your business... but don't try to tell other's how to live their lives and you certainly don't get to impose your religious BS on everyone else - EVER. As a prime and simple example, anyone here remember most "blue laws" were only just removed from the books in the South in the mid-1980s?  Yeah, that cannot happen right?   Tick-tock, tick-tock.   -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_law

I've always been firmly in the "Live and let live" camp where good fences make good neighbors.  Peace.
