Finally watched "Benediction (2021)"  -> https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6852178/

The film provides a harrowing glimpse into the life of Siegfried Sassoon and his compatriots  during and after WWI.  The film is by Terence Davies.

Reviews I posted earlier are bullseye WRT to my feelings. Some of the lines have been quoted in other reviews.  They ring true. Jack Lowden portrays Sassoon with such passion and restraint. Living then, comes across as I might have imagined for those years, those times, those places, those lives.

I mentioned Benedictions (2021) a while back on this thread.  Here's the link.  -> https://ultimatebrokebackforum.com/index.php?topic=141.msg3058623#msg3058623

Overall, a worthy rendering to spend a few hours on.  The pace will be "too slow" for many but I found that part of the allure.  It also proved and exercise in word play and lookup.  Some terms I'd not encountered before.   Have pause and google handy.  Enjoy.  V.

I’m torn about watching this - I’m very drawn to the WW1 poets, but I’m not sure I feel able to cope with that terrible war. At least SS survived. I find I can easily rent it, so perhaps I’ll watch it in th daytime when I’m feeling stronger.

^^^ Yes, be careful.

The horrific war/battle scenes are not present in the same quantity as for instance in, "Saving Private Ryan" or "All Quiet on the Western Front" but they are presented.  For some souls and anyone with PTSD, those images and sounds are overwhelming - even in small doses and should be avoided. I watched "Benediction (2022)" to learn more about Siegfried Sassoon' life, struggles and his contributions to our humanity.  I still cannot imagine walking in his shoes - during those times.  Peace.  V.

Did you know that British actor Julian Sands has been missing since January 13, 2023, after he went hiking around Mount Baldy, California? He still hasn't been found.

Sands' car was found on January 15th, 2023. The actor's three adult children have joined the search and his cell phone was still being pinged up until January. Seeing as how he hasn't been found by now, I can't help but fear that the worst has happened to the actor.  He was an experienced mountain climber.  I feel so bad for his family and friends.

--Violent Night

Starring David Harbour. Also starring John Leguizamo and Beverly D'Angelo.
I thought the film was a hoot, funny and yes, violent, good time! I wasn't sure
what to expect, but for me it delivered lots of amusement. I wasn't expecting
as much as it delivered, in my opinion!

Some comments:

--Michelle Williams got a Best Actress nomination for The Fabelmans.

--How the hell did an actress no one's heard of get a Best Actress nomination for a film no one's heard of?
  (Andrea Riseborough in “To Leslie”)

--Bad News: Cuban actress Ana de Armas got a Best Actress nomination, playing Marilyn Monroe in "Blonde."
--Good News: She also got nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actress of the Year in "Blonde."

--Empire of Light was nominated for Cinematography. Totally unworthy of the nomination. The only reason I can think that got nominated is because it was helmed by legendary cinematographer Richard Deakins.

--AMPAS is again torturing Dianne Warren with song nominations. This time for “Applause” from “Tell It like a Woman”; Music and Lyric by Diane Warren. Another song (and film) no one's heard of. She's been nominated 13 previous times and never won. (AMPAS did award her an honorary Oscar last fall because they tortured her for over thirty years!)

--One of the Best movies came out in July: Thirteen Lives, starring Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell, directed by Ron Howard. RT Critics: 86% RT Audience: 94%. A true story that is more entertaining than a dozen of these Oscar nominees this year and, despite the harrowing nature of it, a feel good story as well. Oscar noms: nada.

--I've seen six of the ten Best Picture nominees. (I have not seen Avatar [and don't choose to], Tár, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking.) Of those I've seen I'd choose between All Quiet on the Western Front and The Fabelmans as my pick.

We'll see Lyle!! I do trust your judgment on the Oscars though. You think this could be the YEAR for Michelle? That EVERYTHING star seems to have it sewed-up though. IMHO! Perhaps Michelle will WOW them with her Peggy Lee role? I used to say the Bio-pic roles have the edge. This year will tell the tale with Austin Butler playing Elvis. I did see that film, the part of it I hated? Tom Hanks playing Colonel Parker, ruined the film for me. I do like Hanks, but he was OVERDONE in that role, horrid! I see he was nominated for a RAZZIE too!! Fitting to me. It's herculean task to play an ICON like Elvis and make it believeable, you know? I think Austin did the best at it, so far.
Michelle will have the same task playing Peggy Lee, just like she did with that Monroe role, although she seemed to NAIL the Gwen Verdon role pretty good!

nuff chatting from me! I still need to see The Fableman's! Oh my!  :o :o :o

I loved All Quiet on the Western Front and Argentina 1985.

I am always a fan of non-fiction.

I enjoyed Glass Onion, but Murder Mystery stories confound me.

I love Ana de Armas.

We'll see!

PS, Lyle: Thirteen Lives was okay... definitely not Oscar-worthy  :P
