El Mago!

This is one for the ages! Cubs player Javier BŠez is known as El Mago, the magician, because he often seems to do things no one else can when he's playing. (Or cause magical things things to happen.) He makes other players lose their train of thought, I guess, with his style of play.

Javy was up to bat yesterday and he hit a routine grounder to the Pirates third baseman, which should have ended the inning for the Cubs when the third baseman threw the ball to first. Instead, the Cubs scored a run and Javy ended up at 2nd base! How did it happen?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO4h-fH_vu8

Crazy!  The thing that makes it even greater to me, is that when Javy sees the other Cubs player touch home plate, he pauses and, like an umpire, calls him safe. I mean, how does he have time for that, and yet...LOL! To top it off, the next batter got a hit and BŠez scored!

That's incredible! Never seen anything quite like that. Thanks, Lyle!

By the way, the MLB rule book says that if BŠez had gotten tagged out or the 1st baseman had gone back and tagged the bag, the run would not have been counted. I heard that later on yesterday.

Another strange incident happened last night: Gio Urshela of the Yankees got a walk to first on ball ... three.  He had a long at bat and lots of things going on and after what was ball three he just threw off his batting gloves and went to first base. He thought it was ball four. No one objected...the umpire or the other teams coach. Oops!

Here's a short article about it if interested:

Also, the Pirates first baseman talks about that play with Javy BŠez:

It's certainly a lot more fun to watch than if he had played as he intended to!

Absolutely, Fritz!   :D

Jonn, an Astros pitcher hit your boy Eric Hosmer last night and he had to leave the game.
(Hosmer, not the pitcher.) Unfortunately, the Padres still won piling up 7 runs in the 10th
inning. In the meantime, the Giants won their first game against the Dodgers in 6 tries by
catching a would be walk off home run from Albert Pujols by sheer luck. (The catch, not the
hit.) Things are wild in the NL West; the past three weeks these teams have been moving
up and down from first place to second; sometimes third.  The Giants have been a surprise
to baseball so far. That's what happens when you give Posey a rest for a whole season last
year.

Keep climbin'!

Meanwhile in the revolving NL West:

San Francisco Giants     34   -    20     -
San Diego Padres          34   -    21   1/2
Los Angeles Dodgers     32   -    22     2

The Padres are now playing the 1st place Cubs--who had the best record in the NL during May.
The Giants are playing the 4th place Angels, with Mike Trout on the IL.
The Dodgers are playing the 1/2 game behind Cardinals.

:D  Go Cubs, Go Angels! Go Dodgers!

DId you mean "EVERY holiday this year"?

Bad for backyard BBQ's too!  ;D

I went to a BBQ this past weekend at my friend Ken's place. We had very mild temperatures, there was sun in the afternoon hours. There were 12 people, which is the largest gathering I've been in for over a year! It was so normal feeling that it was exceptional. We had a great time eating and drinking and laughing and enjoying every little thing.
