The third stop of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating is finished.

In the Ice Dance portion, Russians Alexandra Stepanova & Ivan Bukin claimed the gold.  Italians Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri won the silver.  In a surprise moment, Americans Lorraine McNamara & Quinn Carpenter won the bronze.  It is their first year competing on the senior circuit, so to win a medal on your debut season is a great thing.

In the Pairs competition, it was almost the same podium as the Ice Dance finish.  Russians Natalia Zabiiako & Alexander Enbert won the gold, and Italians Nicole Della Monica & Matteo Guarise took the silver.  A second Russian pair, Daria Pavliuchenko & Denis Khodykin took the bronze.  US pair Deanna Stellato-Dudek & Nathan Bartholomay managed to move up from last (8th) into 6th, but it was not a clean performance, and there was some glaring going on between the two, leading some to speculate that perhaps this pair may be thinking of splitting.

For the Men's competition, we had some drama.  The gold medal winner was Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu.  He is the current Olympic champion, but did not have a clean short program.  However, he was still placed first.  His long program was also considered "sloppy" for him (he had no falls, but quite a few titled air positions and step-outs from jumps), but he still took the gold.  The surprise performance was from Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic.  Michal is 28 and has been competing on the senior circuit for a while now.  The last time he qualified for the Grand Prix final was back in 2011.  From 2011 - 2018, his scores didn't qualify him to enter the Grand Prix Final.  This year, he won a silver medal at Skate America, and now a silver at Skate Finland.  He's now qualified for the Grand Prix final this year.  Junhwan Cha of Korea took the bronze.   American Alexei Krasnazhon was able to move up from 8th to 7th.

Finally, we have the ladies, and they had the same bit of drama the men did.  One of the competitors was Alina Zagitova of Russia.   She is the current Olympic Gold Medalist, and in her short program, she popped one of her jumps, turning her triple lutz- triple loop combo into a triple lutz-single loop.  She was still placed first.  Her long program contained no errors, but she was visibly bothered by the way she skated it, she felt she could've done better.  Stanislava Konstantinova (also of Russia) finished with the silver medal, giving Russia a double podium finish.  The most memorable skate when to the bronze medalist, Kaori Sakamoto.  Usually a very reliable skater, nerves got the better of her in the short program, and she fell twice, ending up in 7th place.  She pulled it together for the long program, and her scores would've placed her in second, but because she was so far down after the short program, she finished in third.   American  Angela Wang also was a victim of nerves.  She finished 9th after the short program, and ended up in last (11th) after the long.

Thanks for all the info on the skating. It is always very interesting.

Why does this Japanese skater always get the gold when he makes visible mistakes, and all the other skaters get points taken off for mistakes?

To be honest, he gets the gold because he deserves it most of the time.  he's really that good.  Because he's built up that reputation, judges may not mark his mistakes as harshly.

With the competition this past weekend, his long program was sloppy with some of the jumps, but he landed them all on one skate, and earned high points for that.

The fourth stop of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating (NHK Trophy of Japan) is finished.

The Ice Dance portion is usually dominated by European pairs.  In this competion, however, that didn't happen.  The two Russian couples who competed were shut out from the medal podium.    Carolane Soucisse & Shane Firus of Canada took gold,     Shiyue Wang & Xinyu Liy of China won silver and Lilah Fear & Lewis Gibson of Great Britain won the bronze.   Out of 9 couples, the US finished 8th and 9th, so not a good competition for us there.

In the Pairs competition, a powerful, clean program by the Russian team of Natalia Zabiiako & Alexander Enbert gave them the gold.  Chinese pair of Cheng Peng & Yang Jin took the silver.  After a rough short program, the US team of Alexa Scimeca-Knierim & and her husband Chris Knierim rebounded and pulled themselves into 3rd place.

For the Men's competition, we had a mess.  Not one competitor was able to skate a clean program.  The eventual winner was Japanese skater Shoma Uno.  He was favored to win, and was a bit sloppy with his program, but today, being least sloppy lead to a gold medal.  Silver was awarded to Russian Sergei Voronov and bronze to Matteo Rizzo from Italy.  He won the first medal ever for Italy on the Grand Prix circuit.

Finally, we have the ladies, and they were everything the men weren't.  Almost all of the women skated cleanly, and we even saw history get made!   The gold medal winner was Rika Kihira from Japan.  She was in 5th after the short program.  Rika took the ice, and she skated a wonderful program packed with clean jumps, and even landed her attempt at the Triple Axel/Triple Toe loop combination.  She became the first woman to land that jump in competition on the senior level at international competition.  She immediately landed a second Triple Axel (as a solo jump) as well.  Silver was given to Satoko Miyahara, also of Japan, giving the host country a 1-2 finish in the ladies discipline.  Bronze went to Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia.   American Mariah Bell was in 8th place after the short program, and skated well enough to move up to 5th overall.

The next stop (next weekend) is Rostelecom Cup (formerly known as Cup of Russia).  Attendees are:

KC wins today over AZ, but not a pretty performance at all, IMHO, you understand!!?

One day (SOON!), the opposing team defense is going to run roughshod all over Patrick Mahomes....I can't believe it hasn't happened YET!! But it will. He was sacked, what, 4 times today, maybe 5? Most on 3rd downs too. Plus, KC has toooo many stoooopid penalties!

ok, nuff complaining from me!! They play the LA RAMS a week from Monday Night in Mexico City!! WTH?? I don't thing Mexico even PLAYS NFL style Football, or maybe any Football or what they might call Soccer there.......who can say? Does tRUMP know we're going there??
LOL....maybe he'll show up for the game........since we NOW know he watches Pro Sports at times too.......

It should be a good matchup.....I don't think I've even WATCHED the RAMS play this year......maybe they are on tonight? Seems like it...

The fifth stop of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating (Rostelecom Cup of Russia) is finished.

The Ice Dance portion of the competition didn't give us any surprises.  Alexandra Stepanova & Ivan Bukin of Russia won the gold medal.  Spain's Sara Hurtado & Kirill Khaliavin took the silver, and Christina Carreira & Anthony Ponomarenko of the US won the bronze.

The Pairs competition turned out to be a messy event with numerous errors.  There wasn't a single pair that skated cleanly.  Host country Russia earned two more medals as Evgenia Tarasova &  Vladimir Morozov won gold and    Daria Pavliuchenko & Denis Khodykin won bronze.  In between them, Italians Nicole Della Monica & Matteo Guarise earned the silver.  USA had two pairs in the competion.  Ashley Cain & Timothy Leduc finished in 6th.  Deanna Stellato-Dudek & Nathan Bartholomay were in last place, and then withdrew from the competition due to food poisoning.

For the Men's competition, they were just as sloppy as the pairs.  The big surprise was that Russian men were blocked from the podium.  The highest Russian finish was 4th place.   Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu started strongly, landing his quad combinations and earning major points.  Near the end he lost his energy and made mistakes, but his score was still high enough for a gold medal.  His countryman, Kazuki Tomonon, skated well to the music of Riverdance, and was in second, bu then Morisi Kvitelashvili from Georgia took to the ice, and proved to be a spoiler.  His skated well enough to jump into the silver medal spot, pushing Tomonon down to bronze, and pushing Russian Mikhail Kolyada from the bronze medal position to off he podium.   The top American finish was    Alexei Krasnozhon, who finished 8th.

Finally, we have the ladies.  This event was given a lot of attention for two reasons.  First, one of the competitors was the 2018 Olympic gold medalist, Alina Zagitova, who was favored to win.  Second, the lone American to enter the event was Gracie Gold.  She had been the darling of the US, but she had withdrawn from competition, citing depression and an eating disorder.

While she didn't have a perfect skate, Alina Zagitova was able to easily win a gold in front of her countrymen/women.  Teammate Sofia Samodurova won the silver, and Korea's Eunsoo Lim made a great recovery after a flawed short program, and was able to win the bronze.

Gracie Gold took to the ice looking very nervous, and not ready for competition.  She seemed to have no stamina or spark.  Gracie's planned program was a Triple Lutz-Triple Toe combo, a Triple Flip, and a Double Axel.  Her combo became a double lutz-double toe, a fall on the triple flip, and a popped single axel.  She was in last place after the short program, and then withdrew from the competition for the long program.

The next stop (next weekend) is Internationaux de France.  Once this competition is done, the top point earners from all the prior competitions will meet up for the Grand Prix Final.

Internationaux de France attendees are:

This caught my eye:

Jeff Rohrer is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys in the 1980's.
He played college football at Yale University and was drafted in the second round of the 1982 NFL Draft.
On Sunday (tomorrow) he is set to become the first known NFL player to marry a man.
