Carl Nassib, first openly gay player in NFL, announces retirement: "I'm ready to move on"

By - Analisa Novak  -  September 6, 2023

Carl Nassib, who made history in 2021 when he became the first openly gay active player in the NFL, announced his retirement Wednesday.

Nassib told "CBS Morning" that while it wasn't an easy choice, he felt it was time to move on to the next chapter.

"Football has been something I've been doing since I was eight, and I just felt like I'm very proud of my career. I've played a lot of games, played a lot of football, and I'm ready to move on to the next chapter," Nassib said.

Nassib became a free agent last year and had not signed to a team. Throughout his career, the linebacker has played for the Cleveland Browns and the Las Vegas Raiders and was a captain of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Despite saying he's feeling physically and mentally fit, Nassib said he chose to retire to focus on his company, Rayze, which he founded just before the last NFL season. The app enables users to give back to causes they are passionate about.

Hope the next gay players have an easier time because of what Nassib has done.

Fritz, I know that you and I agree that the Nationals City Connect uniforms are the rare likable uniforms from this MLB idea, but I had never actually seen the team play wearing them until last night.

The Dodgers arrived late in Washington from Miami (some wether trouble) and then the game got halted for over an hour and a half because of rain. They're about to play again already!

The Nationals City connect uniforms look even better in action. The colors all look fantastic together and the sleeve accessories players can wear complement them and I just enjoyed watching them. Because they have the pink accents on them (the Washington Cherry tree blossoms) the contrast is colorful and appealing. Some of the Nats were even wearing the same color belt!  Very smart looking. I wish they'd wear those all weekend!

By the way, the Nationals manager, Dave Martinez, has put on a lot of weight since the WS days!

Great! (About the uniforms! Not so much about the weight.)

What is it with the weather there Fritz? There was a 1 hr. 34 min. weather delay in the 7th inning yesterday. Today the game was supposed to start a couple hours ago and it still hasn't yet. Neither has the game in Boston. Is the east coast getting flooded? The Dodgers had a two hr. rain delay in Cleveland, too. Normally most teams have Monday off, but the Dodgers don't, so a double header tomorrow, if the rain doesn't stop, won't be welcome!

Yeah, we've been having rain off and on all day. With some thunder and lightning.

The ND-NC State game in Raleigh was delayed at the beginning of the second quarter for nearly two hours, not so much because of rain, but because there were lightning strikes all over the area. The stadium was evacuated during the delay.

And this is after a weeks long drought around here.

^^^

They started that game about 8:30 your time and then it went extra innings! They had to start today's game less than 12 hours after they finished that one! The lives of baseball players can get awfully tiresome! Fans just have to turn on the TV or radio every day!

You know you're in small-town America when high school football is front-page news in the local newspaper.

I'm not saying that to be snarky. It's actually kind of refreshing. It always reminds me of an experience I had one summer when I was in college and had a job as an intern at the local newspaper. One of my assignments was to cover high school graduations, and the articles were long because they included the names of the graduating classes. One of the full-time reporters made some sort of disparaging remark about those articles. I replied that if it were your kid graduating, it would be important to you. She had nothing to say about that.

I remember back in the 60's in New Orleans, before the Saints came to town, high schools played on Sunday afternoons routinely, and the games were well attended and well covered by the local paper.

Fritz, the Dodgers are glad to be leaving Washington, yet another rain delay today for an hour and fifteen minutes! The three days they were there the teams played nine hours of baseball and there were six hours plus of rain delays! The Nats wore their City Connect Uniforms for two days, though, not just Friday!

I know I mentioned the players and rain delays, but if you were a fan attending a game you didn't have the most optimal time and we know the prices of these things now. The Dodgers will be going to Seattle next week, but if they have rain, the stadium has a roof!  :)

Well, is Aaron Rodgers' career over?

The only reason I really know who Aaron Rodgers is, is because of his tantrums over taking the Covid vaccines a couple years ago.

I believe it is, Jeff. He wouldn't have gone more than two seasons with the Jets, maybe 3, but his age precludes him making a full recovery from a torn achilles tendon. Young players play hell recovering from this injury, much less someone who is going to be 40 yo soon.

I've been pretty much thinking that. Time for him to retire.
