On April 7, 1949, Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical South Pacific opened at the Majestic Theater.  It was simply another of their masterpieces, but it was my favorite.

Their previous masterpiece was Oklahoma, which opened during the war and was an homage to simpler times. South Pacific came after the war, and was an homage to the struggle, sacrifice and spirit of America in war. Both were laced with pathos and humor.

I want to take note of this 70th anniversary, albeit a couple months late. If you are old enough to remember Ezio Pinza singing “Some Enchanted Evening”, I’m sure you thought it was the high point of the show. I used to, but in 2005  the musical was presented in concert at Carnegie Hall. That’s when I heard Brian Stokes Mitchell sing “This Nearly Was Mine”.  It is the greatest performance of any Broadway musical song  I have ever heard or seen in my life.

There are other joyous South Pacific performances to be found on youtube  these days. Try this version of “There Is Nothing Like A Dame” by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles

Sara, those videos are wonderful.

I assumed Hallelujah was filmed in Paris, since there are glimpses of Notre Dame here and there. But No, it was shot in Montreal, at the church of Saint Pierre-Apotre. Maybe members of the forum might like to watch a bit about it; it’s certainly appropriate.

Thanks for a great find.

Loved watching this video, and seeing how animals react to music.

That video is amazing Brian!

I loved what I saw when I was in NZ, I always tell people they need to get there for themselves.

Deep Purple. Maybe I should have put this video on What Are You Listening To, but No -- it’s more than just a song to me.

I heard it first when I was seven. The lady’s voice was the most beautiful I ever heard, and her delicate phrasing and effortless legato made me understand that this is how music speaks to people. It has been a treasure to me all my life.

Bea Wain
. In this nostalgic 1983 souvenir she revisits her wonderful hits from 1939 onward.  Her voice and phrasing are still perfect -- just incredible. Deep Purple is the final piece in this set.

Youtube has virtually all of her songs and collections. If you’d like to hear more, just search youtube for Bea Wain.

Are you a Glenn Miller fan?

Here are three hours of excerpts from Glenn’s radio broadcasts, spanning his brilliant fours years from the Glen Island Casino to the Chesterfield Supper Club, plus his final show before joining the US Army.  All of his great songs are here, played live and whole on the air with excellent fidelity. He introduces many them, and acknowledges several awards given to him and his musicians.

Notice the publishing date: September 22, 2019. Hey, it’s brand new!

Have you ever heard Renee Fleming sing O Mio Babbino Caro? Talk about a show stopper!
Of course she had been practicing it for a couple decades, but that is beside the point. I wonder
what she sounded like when she was 9....?
