The Forum & SSL - Secure Socket Layer

Hello UBF members.  When the forum had a recent update, our server began using SSL - Secure Socket Layer.  SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.

It is easy to tell if a site you are using is on SSL.  A site without SSL will have an address that starts with http://.  A site that uses SSL will start with https://.

Why are we telling you this?  Because if you are posting pictures here, and the address you use doesn't have the "s" in it, the image will not show.  Anytime you post an image, you should make sure that it starts with https://

The Simpsons taps Cate Blanchett & David Harbour

The Simpsons will be getting Stranger and turning Blue.  Fox’s forever-running animated comedy will be leaning on the vocal talents of Stranger Things star David Harbour and Cate Blanchett, who won an Oscar for Blue Jasmine, EW has learned.

Blanchett — who won another Academy Award for The Aviator and next stars in the small-screen dramas Stateless and Mrs. America — will pop up in Springfield next year in an episode that will likely serve as the season 31 finale. In “The Way of the Dog,” the actress voices a canine psychologist named Elaine who agrees to help Santa’s Little Helper, who is suffering from depression. “She determines if there’s a trauma in his past that they have to go solve, which actually goes back to the first episode of the series.”” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean tells EW, adding that fans will experience “a callback that is older than the internet.”

Meanwhile, Harbour — who recently starred in Hellboy and returns to the big screen next year in Black Widow — will play an alternate version of Mr. Burns in a season 32 episode. In a take on Undercover Boss, Mr. Burns, voiced by Harry Shearer, spots some graffiti on the wall at the nuclear power plant (“Burns is not excellent”) and decides to go undercover to root out the problem. “Like Mission: Impossible, they give him a whole new body and face and voice so that this people in the plant won’t possibly recognize him,” shares Jean. “He’s supposed to be a blue-collar guy from another part of the plant, but everything he says is like Mr. Burns. He wants to go to karaoke and sing songs from the 1890s, but the guys don’t see through it.”

Jersey Boy Bullied For Being Gay, Commits Suicide

A New Jersey mother is suing a local school district, claiming that her 12-year-old son took his own life in 2017 because classmates bullied him for being gay.

Tristan Peterson, a student at Woodruff Middle School in Bridgeton in the southern part of the state, came out as gay to his peers in 2017, according to the lawsuit. He died by suicide in his parents' home that December after experiencing repeated bullying, the suit says.  His mother, Marcy Peterson, claims in the suit filed in October in state Superior Court in Cumberland County that his death was a "result of an extended and persistent period of bullying, intimidation, and harassment."

The suit accuses the school, the Upper Deerfield School District and staff of negligence, and of violating the state's discrimination law, wrongful death and creating a hostile learning environment. Several district staff and the state of New Jersey are also named in the suit, which seeks damages and a jury trial.

Tristan was bullied and harassed repeatedly by his classmates, according to the lawsuit. During a November 2017 incident, just days before the boy's death, a staff member at the school witnessed another student threaten Tristan, the suit says.

Hallmark Reverses Decision

Following backlash from LGBT advocates, the Hallmark channel apologized on Sunday for removing ads featuring a lesbian marriage and announced they were reinstating the commercials.

Hallmark on Thursday removed ads created by wedding services company Zola that feature a lesbian couple kissing. The ads had garnered opposition from an organization called One Million Moms, which advocates for traditional morality in public media and describes itself as a group “fed up with the filth many segments of our society, especially the entertainment media, are throwing at our children.”

Hallmark initially pulled the ads with a lesbian couple, telling Zola representatives, “We are not allowed to accept creatives that are deemed controversial.” One Million Moms claimed Hallmark executive Bill Abbot confirmed to the group that the ads were “aired in error.”

However, LGBT advocates lambasted the decision.

Amber Glenn Comes Out As Bisexual

American figure skater Amber Glenn is known in the sport as someone who is set to come into her own as an elite competitor. The 2014 U.S. Junior national champion has made a steady, consistent rise up the senior ranks. Next month, the 20-year-old Texan will be among the favorites to win a senior national championship, and lead the U.S. contingent at the world championship World Figure Skating Championships at Montreal.

Off the ice, she’s also come into her own, and last week she publicly acknowledged her sexual orientation for the first time, using the term “bisexual/pansexual” in an interview with the Dallas Voice.

While there are many out male figure skaters, a woman coming out as LGBTQ is still a rarity. According to the website, Glenn was out to those in the sport she was closest to, but felt now was the time to step out to fans.

“The fear of not being accepted is a huge struggle for me,” she told Dallas Voice. “Being perceived as ‘just a phase’ or ‘indecisive’ is a common thing for bisexual/pansexual women. I don’t want to shove my sexuality in people’s faces, but I also don’t want to hide who I am.”

Transgender Woman Wears Hate Speech T-Shirt

A transgender woman facing disciplinary action over a T-shirt stating that she is still biologically a man has been accused of “hate speech”.

Debbie Hayton, a physics teacher in the Midlands, lives as a transgender women after changing her gender from male to female in 2012. But unlike many people in the trans-community, she does not believe her sex can be changed and is vocal about the fact that she will always biologically remain a man.  She is now potentially facing expulsion from the LGBT committee of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) for wearing a top adorned with the slogan: “Trans women are men. Get over it!”

If the TUC rules against Ms Hayton, who has sat on the committee for five years, it would mean that even transgender people face being accused of transphobia for saying that they do not believe an individual can alter the sex they were assigned at birth.

Ms Hayton, 51, who has undergone surgery and hormone treatment, wore the T-shirt at an event organised by campaign group Fair Play for Women in July, and it attracted a complaint in August.

Stopping Genital Surgeries on Intersex Infants

Pidgeon Pagonis’ childhood memories include surgeries, hormone therapy, and repeated genital inspections. When Pagonis turned 18 and got a copy of their medical records, they finally understood why.

The first page had a handwritten note: “46 XY male pseudohermaphrodite.” The procedures that followed were also listed: a clitoral reduction, vaginoplasty, and surgery to remove undescended testes.

For Pagonis, now 33, the results of some of these procedures have been both physically and psychologically damaging.  “The surgeries left me with tons of scar tissue and nerve damage,” Pagonis told VICE News.

Pagonis was born with an intersex condition called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. It’s one of more than 20 conditions that fall under the medical umbrella of “intersex.” There’s a wide range of diagnoses, but each includes an individual having combinations of chromosomes, gonads, and genitalia that place them between typical definitions of male and female.

Surgeries are sometimes necessary to allow proper functioning or remove malignancies, but many of the procedures that Pagonis underwent as a child were cosmetic.

LGBTQ Ally Dua Lipa

LGBTQ ally Dua Lipa has released a new single from her current hit album, “Future Nostalgia.”

The UK songstress has been a queer fan-favorite since the early days of her career, when she released the singles “Be the One” and “Last Dance,” as explained in a recent article from the website, Means Happy.

Speaking to the site, an 18-year old London fan named Tom, who identifies as gay, said, “The gays definitely caught onto her first. Going to her concerts before and after “New Rules” was funny because before it was like 90% gays. After it was like a 50-50 gay-straight mix. I don’t think there’s been a British pop girl like her in a while. It was something that we wanted."

“I also think that because she’s young, she’s very relatable to us, especially on social media,” said Tom, who has seen Dua live six times. “That’s something that definitely appealed to me.”

The singer made headlines last year after she spoke up in support of fans ejected from her concert in Shanghai for holding up banners in support of LGBTQ rights, saying in a tweet, “I will stand by you all for your love and beliefs and I am proud and grateful that you felt safe enough to show your pride at my show. What you did takes a lot of bravery. I always want my music to bring strength, hope and unity. I was horrified by what happened and I send love to all my fans involved.”

Jake Gyllenhaal Movies

Happy birthday to Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, who turns 39 on December 19, 2019.

The versatile actor, who has juggled between film and stage (having appeared on New York stages twice in the past two years in a revival of “Sunday in the Park with George” as well as the new play “Sea Wall”/”A Life”), continues to choose roles that are challenging and unexpected.

Gyllenhaal has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Ang Lee‘s “Brokeback Mountain,” as well as two SAG Awards for that performance including Best Supporting Actor. He was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (for 2010’s “Love and Other Drugs” and 2014’s “Nightcrawler”). Gyllenhaal was also nominated for a third Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in “Nightcrawler.”

Currently, Gyllenhaal has a host of films on tap for release in 2020 and beyond. But until then, let’s raise a glass to the great performer and celebrate his big day by counting down and ranking his 16 best feature film appearances.

Gay L.A.? According to This Movie, It’s Murder

“Midnight Kiss,” the latest, New Year’s Eve-set installment of Blumhouse’s horror anthology “Into the Dark,” is a B-grade slasher in the tradition of drive-in theaters and late-night TV: Friends hole up in a remote house for the weekend and find themselves being picked off, one by one, by a masked marauder.

The twist?

The friends are a quartet of L.A. gays and their closest straight gal pal. Their cabin in the woods is a rambling, ultra-modern manse in Palm Springs. And “Scream’s” white mask has been replaced with a sly reference to the popular kink known as “pup play.”

In other words, “Midnight Kiss,” which arrives Friday on Hulu, gleefully remixes familiar genre tropes with distinctly gay subject matter, delving into the use of hookup apps and the pitfalls of open relationships while coining the hilariously ribald phrase “psychopath bottom.” It stars Augustus Prew (“The Morning Show”) as Cameron, an aspiring artist who reluctantly agrees to join the crew’s annual getaway, and Scott Evans (“Grace and Frankie”) as his uptight ex, Joel. Joined by Hannah (Ayden Mayeri), Zachary (Chester Lockhart) and Joel’s new fiancé, Logan (Lukas Gage), the friends’ relationships fray as their plans for a wild night out descend into terror.

Lesbian Couple Adopted Three Young Brothers

Three young brothers who had been separated from one another have been brought together and adopted by a lesbian couple in Massachusetts.

KC and Lena Currie, who got married five years ago, adopted the oldest brother – Joey, now three – in 2018, after meeting him at an event organised by non-profit group Children’s Friend.  And a year later, on 23 November 2019 – National Adoption Day – they adopted his younger brothers, Logan, two, and Noah, one.

The couple told Good Morning America that the boys call them Mama and Mommy.  “A lot of times Joey says, ‘Hey, Mommy-Mama’ – he’ll settle for either one,” Lena said.

After adopting Joey, KC and Lena got a call from Children’s Friend – Joey’s younger brother, Noah, then six weeks old, was also in need of a family to take care of him.  “We immediately said, ‘Yes,'” KC said.

A month later, the lesbian couple got another call from Children’s Friend about Joey and Noah’s middle sibling, Logan, who was living with another foster family at the time.  Noah was supposed to be adopted by the other foster family, but the arrangement had fallen through at the last minute and he needed a home.

At Least 26 Transgender People Were Killed in America

At least 26 transgender and gender nonconforming people were killed in the United States this year, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), with some outlets reporting higher numbers.  “We’re seeing the number of cases go up,” said transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, who started the Transgender Day of Remembrance. “The last couple of years they’ve been growing and growing very quickly and that’s concerning.”

In November, monitoring group Transrespect Versus Transphobia Worldwide reported 331 killings of transgender and gender-diverse people between October 2018 and September 2019. Thirty-one of those murders took place in the U.S.

Since then, seven more transgender people have died in the U.S., according to the "trans lives matter" web project, which reported 40 deaths this year, including suicides. The most recent was the death of Yahira Nesby, a black trans woman killed in Brooklyn on Dec. 19.

When Smith started tracking transgender deaths in 1998, widespread awareness of LGBTQ+ issues was limited and collecting information on these deaths was even more difficult. She used transgender networks on online forums, message boards and chat rooms as well as LexisNexis, an online resource for legal research.

'Riverdale's' Jughead and Asexuality

If you weren’t a fan of the Archie Comics, you might not know that in many of the comics, Jughead actually identifies as asexual and aromantic.  So when Jughead started dating Betty, many fans were understandably outraged. It was a prime opportunity to showcase an asexual character in a big-budget teen show, something that is long-overdue.

The Riverdale producers had a chance to give us a beautiful asexual character and even, perhaps, an asexual coming out story, but they couldn’t even wait a full season before pairing Jughead up with Betty.  While we’ve made some strides in LGBTQ representation (particularly on teen shows), asexuality is still essentially ignored by pop culture. The only mainstream ace character on TV is Todd from BoJack Horseman. And while they did a great job with his storyline, he’s still, well, only a cartoon.

According to Cole Sprouse (aka Jughead himself), he fought hard to make his character true to the comics. In a Reddit AMA back a few years ago, he told fans,

“Of course, I haven’t stopped the dialogue. I’m sure I’m quite the pest. Can’t spoil too much, unfortunately, but this topic was one of the first I discussed with [Riverdale creator] Roberto before this season started.”

UN Recognizes Cyndi Lauper's LGBTQ Activism

The United Nations has presented LGBTQ ally Cyndi Lauper with its first-ever High Note Global Prize.

The honor was bestowed Tuesday during Lauper’s Home for the Holidays benefit concert, where pop star Kesha and U.N. Human Rights chief external officer Laurent Sauveur appeared to present the award, Billboard reports. Fellow LGBTQ icon Cher also recorded a video message to congratulate the singer.

The U.N. made particular note of Lauper’s work through True Colors United, a nonprofit founded to combat LGBTQ homelessness.  "Cyndi has stated that 'We each have a personal responsibility to make sure LGBTQ youth are treated with dignity and respect,'" Kesha said. "And I couldn’t agree more."

Cher said in her message, “No one deserves this award more than you do. And I know you, and I love you. So have a wonderful night and just bathe in the glory."

Lauper through her charity has put a priority on ensure youth within the LGBTQ community don’t end up living on the streets. “We each have a personal responsibility to make sure LGBTQ youth are treated with dignity and respect,” Lauper says in a statement on the True Colors United website.
