--Ted Lasso
I just finished last night the ten first season episodes of this new series. I would not have been able to if it weren't for one of my SAG friends who was sent the entire season on DVD's for awards consideration, because it's on the Apple+ streaming service which I don't get, nor do I know anyone that does.
Remember when you had the real and easy option to watch any TV show or movie that's getting attention by just turning on the TV or going to a rental store or movie theater? Now you have to subscribe to a dozen streaming sites or have friends who get screening copies, I guess! There are several things I want to watch that are not available to me, but what can you do?
Anyhoo, back to Ted Lasso! I loved this series. It's upbeat, heartfelt, extremely funny, and even well written. And, I found out this morning, it won the WGA (Writer's Guild) awards for best comedy writing and best written new series last night!
The premise of the series is this: In Britain, a wealthy husband and wife have a bitter divorce and the wife gets possession of the husband's adored football (soccer) team. Since it's the husband's pride and joy she wants to do everything she can to sabotage it, so she hires a very seemingly unqualified American (Ted Lasso) who's never coached the sport to come over and ruin the team.
It doesn't quite work out that way.
There's a dozen fascinating characters in this series, especially the title character who's much like a Beverly Hillbilly coming to Beverly Hills...a fish out of water. He's played by former SNL cast member Jason Sudeikis and he's deservedly won a couple awards for the role this year.
I was somewhat skeptical about it when my friend loaned it to me to watch, but I sat down one night and gave the first episode a go and was hooked from then on. When you watch the first episode of something and laugh out loud several times, you go back for more!
