This is interesting (also sad that I get excited about "moderate Republicans" in Ohio, but there you have it):

https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/politics/ohio-politics/moderate-republican-jason-stephens-snatches-ohio-house-speaker-position-in-surprise-upset

I understand what you're saying.  "Moderate" is better than "far-right" or "Trump supporter", but still, with what the Republican party has become........ugh.

As far as I know this morning, Kevin McCarthy is still not Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The thing about this House Speaker vote that's bizarre, is that the 20 people (so far) voting against McCarthy have no other candidate that they are supporting for the job. They're just being obstructionist. They have no real policy arguments about why they are not voting for McCarthy. McCarthy himself, as leader of the House, doesn't even have a policy agenda he's pushing. The current GOP has no idea what they really stand for any more, no agenda to push except obstruction and chaos.

--In the last hour the orange Cretin has put forth his opinion that the GOP shouldn't drag this out. Even though he could have said that yesterday, but the real fact is that he doesn't really care who's speaker. We'll see how much influence he'll have here.

--Also in the last hour the Democrats are going to be urging a no vote on any motion to adjourn because they want the floor vote on McCarthy.

Meanwhile, George Santos first act as a member of Congress yesterday:

George Santos Wrongly Announces He was Sworn In
by Adela Suliman | Washington Post

George Santos shared a falsehood on his first day on Capitol Hill: that he had been sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives. The statement on his official website drew instant criticism because the New York Republican has been accused of fabricating key details of his biography. No elected member of the House was sworn in Tuesday, including Rep.-elect Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as House Republicans, who secured the majority in November, failed to elect a speaker after McCarthy’s bid was thwarted. Incoming members cannot be sworn in until a speaker is chosen. The House is scheduled to convene at noon on Wednesday, and a fourth round of voting is expected. George Santos had an awkward first day at the office.

“The very first thing, George Santos puts in writing from Congress isn’t true? Shocked,” one Twitter user said. Santos’s statement appears to have been taken down online.

This is quite funny to me because a day or two ago I finished an article in the Dec. 26 New Yorker that was all about Kevin McCarthy and his political ambitions.

What are his ambitions, except holding the position of House Speaker?

Actually, that's about it. The New Yorker article used the plural, ambitions, so I did, too. Left me with the impression he'll prostitute himself to anybody for their support.

What else can he do? He, nor the party, stand for little right now except holding that power. They have no plans to do much of anything outside of disrupt; they're just in grievance mode, like children acting out. The R side of the house house is in stark contrast to the D side and the Senate and Executive branches who are displaying some vision and competency. Hope the voters of these contrarians are taking notice.

The last time it took more than 9 votes for Speaker was in 1859 (right before the Civil War):

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. - Karl R. Popper

He keeps losing but he's got 202 or so votes and it's that 10% of Republicans who are voting no. McCarthy has agreed to nearly all of the demands they wanted in exchange for their vote, so why are they still voting no. Because this 10% are the attention seekers.
______________________

From news I read:

To be elected speaker in this new Congress with just Republican votes, any Republican can only lose four votes. Because of how narrow Republicans' majority is after the midterm election results, a small cadre of intransigent members on the party's far right have a lot of leverage — and they're showing they're willing to use it.

WHAT DO THEY WANT?

What it boils down to for these members is three things:

--wanting to see less government spending,
--more power to them and less power for the speaker, and
--mistrust and personality differences

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

The core of this group are anti-establishment, ideologic skeptics of government. They want it to be smaller, do less, to spend less and are hard line on immigration. Most were endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and many are election deniers, but even Trump's influence is only going so far in this fight.

These hard core Trumpists don't even listen to Trump. Like I wrote, they want attention. They have a constituency (outside of their party) that listens to them online and social media. They don't really care about much more than the attention they're getting. Look, if Marjorie Taylor Greene and Jim Jordan are the two who are acting sane* in the Republican party right now, that tells you how crazy the 21 others are. *Well let's just say not as insane.

SO WHO ARE THEY?

Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.                  Dan Bishop, R-N.C.                 Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.
Josh Brecheen, R-Okla.            Michael Cloud, R-Texas            Andrew Clyde, R-Ga.
Eli Crane, R-Ariz.                     Byron Donalds, R-Fla.              Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.
Bob Good, R-Va.                      Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.                  Andy Harris, R-Md.
Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla.         Mary Miller, R-Ill.                    Ralph Norman, R-S.C.
Andy Ogles, R-Tenn.                 Scott Perry, R-Pa.                   Matthew Rosendale R-Mont.
Chip Roy, R-Texas                    Keith Self, R-Texas                  Victoria Spartz, R-Ind.

WHAT, IF ANYTHING, DO THEY WANT?

How long is this going to go on?
