To an outsider it seems strange that the Democrats can't make an agreement with more moderate Republicans and then elect one of them. I know everything is incredibly polarized, but that would mean Congress could start working and it would mean the craziest Right-wingers would be left with less power.

I don't know why McCarthy just doesn't give up. I guess he can't admit that Kevin McCarthy can lose--like somebody else we know. If he quit, McCarthy could at least claim that the election was stolen. ...

For three days I have tried to find the answer to something...does anyone know?

People on the news programs I've watched have been saying all this time, while McCarthy keeps promising one thing after another to the 21 (+ or -) who keep voting against him, that if another person is put in the running for House Speaker, that person would have to abide by all of the things McCarthy has already promised to these people. Why would that be the case? It makes no sense why that would have to be the case. It could also be why no one else wants the job because they'd be bound by all KM's krap he's already doled out to the krazies.

I know everything is incredibly polarized, but that would mean Congress could start working and it would mean the craziest Right-wingers would be left with less power.

It's never really come up before in 100 years, so that might be one reason. Another is that the Democrats want to project themselves as a party that's not in an uproar and are united and ready to deal with and solve issues for the American people in stark contrast to the Republicans in such obvious disarray. So they've been in lock step, with all members sitting there for all hours each day and casting their votes (no absences) for the same person each time and all voting NOT to adjourn, but keep on going when that vote is taken. It does make them look good and rock solid.

One reason they might want to change tactics? Last night: Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said he would resign from Congress should moderate Democrats strike a deal with Republicans to elect a "moderate" House speaker. I could get behind that!

Also, the 20 (+ or -) stonewallers are raising money off the madness they're creating. They're a despicable bunch:

Anti-McCarthy Republicans Are Raising Money Off Stonewalling Congress
It shouldn't be surprising that Andy Biggs and Matt Gaetz and others are peppering their supporters with fundraising emails as they block the House from commencing business.
by Ryan Bort | Rolling Stone Magazine

IT’S A STUNT, of course.

The 20 or so Republicans who have opposed Kevin McCarthy’s bid for the speakership — and thus prevented the House of Representatives from swearing in its members and beginning its business — have claimed they’re doing so in the name of draining the swamp. They’ve put forth no viable alternative, nor have they been swayed by any of the concessions McCarthy had made in an effort to woo them. They have, however, received plenty of press for their efforts and are fund-raising off it.

I'm beginning to get the impression that no matter what McCarthy offers, some people just don't want him, period.

And he's making himself look pathetic, just like the GOS.

The last point there is an excellent reason to not play their game. If I've understood that correctly, one of the concessions McCarthy has given them is that it will only take one Republican to demand a vote of confidence (or the equivalent term in the US) in the Speaker. That would mean that whenever Gaetz, Boebert or their ilk wanted attention and by extension fundraise more money, they would instigate such a vote? It seems completely untenable.

This is true. I don't know what personal authority and respect, if any, he'd be able to command even if he wins the 15th vote - after the spectacle of everything that went before.

McCarthy elected House speaker after days of painstaking negotiations and failed votes

By Clare Foran, Manu Raju, Annie Grayer and Melanie Zanona, CNN - January 7, 2023

Kevin McCarthy was elected House speaker in the early hours of Saturday morning – a major victory for the California Republican that elevates him to a powerful position leading the GOP majority in the chamber and an outcome that followed days of painstaking negotiations and failed votes.

To secure the gavel, McCarthy had to chip away at opposition from a bloc of hardline conservatives in what became the longest contest in 164 years. To win over critics, McCarthy and his allies made a series of concessions to conservatives – a move that frustrated moderates concerned the concessions may make it harder for the new GOP majority to effectively govern.

As Republicans turn their attention to implementing their agenda, the struggle McCarthy faced to lock down votes may serve as a preview of the kind of challenges he will face in trying to unite his members in the future. The deal-making McCarthy engaged in also appears poised to leave him with a weaker hand to play in his new position of authority, though the California Republican has disputed that notion.

The speaker election unfolded over a series of days – beginning on the first day of the 118th Congress – and highlighted divides between conservatives and moderates. The final hours before McCarthy was elected were punctuated with chaotic and tense moments on the House floor with lawmakers on the edge of their seats waiting to see how a handful of remaining holdouts would vote.

Manhattan judge wants Trump to stop calling NY attorney general's $250 million fraud case a witch hunt

Laura Italiano Jan 6, 2023

A Manhattan judge on Friday delivered his latest blow to Donald Trump, rejecting what he called the former president's "borderline frivolous" request to dismiss New York's $250 million fraud lawsuit, which seeks to run his business empire out of the state.

In a nine-page decision, New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron kept Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit on track for an early October trial.

He stopped short of sanctioning Trump's lawyers, as he'd threatened earlier in the week, for filing what he called repeatedly rejected legal arguments — including the claim that James' three-year probe of his business and resulting lawsuit is a "witch hunt."

As early as her 2018 campaign for attorney general, James, a Democrat, had made it clear she disagreed with the then-president's policies, and had promised to investigate and pursue fraud charges against his Manhattan-headquartered golf resort and real estate company, the Trump Organization.

Right wing fanatics have taken over the Brazilian congress. In case you wondered whether or not the crazy actions in the U.S. have effects elsewhere in the world you now have your answer:

I briefly heard about something that happened two days ago. A student in Virginia took a handgun to school and purposely shot his teacher. I looked up some info, but even two days later the details are not being revealed. Possibly because it was a six year old!

Police Chief Steve Drew said the boy shot and wounded the teacher with a handgun in a first-grade classroom. He was later taken into police custody. Drew said the shooting was not accidental and was part of an altercation. No students were injured. Police have since declined to describe what led to the altercation or any other details about what happened in the classroom, citing the ongoing investigation. They have also declined to say how the boy got access to the gun or who owns the weapon.

I can't imagine a parent of any other child in that classroom (maybe school) wanting that child to remain in that school, or vice-versa. I can't imagine any further information that does come out about this will be at all satisfactory.

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said, “This is a red flag for the country.”

Ya think? We've had red flags for decades about this. I don't remember the context in which I heard this quote once, "I saw all the red flags, but I just thought it was a parade."

Well you know...the only thing that will stop a bad 6 year old with a gun is a good 6 year old with a gun.... ::)

Also on our news last night, we saw where a guy with a gun held up diners in a cafe (Texas?). One of the diners pulled out his own gun and fired 9 times killing the guy. It was then found that the original gun was fake.
This is so unbelievable to us where even our police do not wear guns normally.

The news here in Virginia is that the teacher was trying to take the gun away from the six-year-old when he shot her.

I expect that the gun people don't want anyone to take anyone's guns away, no matter what.
