Norman Lear, who made funny sitcoms about serious topics, dies at 101

Norman Lear, who addressed serious issues in humorous sitcoms, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101. Matthew Lawrence, a spokesperson for the family, said the producer and screenwriter died of natural causes. Lear was hailed for producing beloved television shows like All in the Family and The Jeffersons, and later, for his work as a political activist.

A post on his Facebook page said that he was "surrounded by his family as we told stories and sang songs until the very end."

The families in Lear's shows had conversations about the real things that were going on in the 1970s. Before these shows, television worlds were simpler, nicer places, says Darnell Hunt, a leading scholar of racial representation on TV. They had plot lines like: "I burnt the pot roast. What are we gonna do we don't have anything for dinner. Or I have a talent show at school and I don't know how to dance."

Rudy Giuliani ordered to pay nearly $150 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed

By Devan Cole, Holmes Lybrand and Katelyn Polantz   Fri December 15, 2023

A Washington, DC, jury has ordered Rudy Giuliani to pay nearly $150 million to two Georgia election workers for the harm caused by defamatory statements he made about them following the 2020 election.

Ruby Freeman was awarded $16,171,000 for defamation and $20 million for emotional distress. Shaye Moss, Freeman’s daughter, was awarded $16,998,000 for defamation and $20 million for emotional distress. The jury also awarded $75 million in punitive damages to both plaintiffs.

Giuliani watched intently as the verdict was read, using a stylus on a touch-screen device, apparently taking down notes on the figures he’d been ordered to pay. After leaving the courtroom, the former New York mayor and onetime attorney to former President Donald Trump vowed to appeal.

After the proceedings ended, Freeman and Moss hugged each other tightly and then every member of their legal team. There was a feeling of jubilation among the plaintiffs in the courtroom after Giuliani left, and Freeman looked especially relieved after the jury forewoman read the numbers, spinning around slightly in her chair and closing her eyes briefly.

^^^ I hope they actually are able to collect something from that POS SOB... but in all likelihood, he's "broke on paper" just like that other SOB Jones in the Sandy Hook verdict.  The US bankruptcy laws are far too generous and allow far too much "protection"  After a verdict, assets should be seized immediately and everything he owns or did own or had any connection to him or was hidden by using LLC, corps, and other subterfuge to mask assets should be fair game.  V.

Why can't the news media report the news this way:

Iowa Republicans Choose Convicted Sexual Abuser with
91 Criminal Indictments as Presidential Standard Bearer

Unfortunately, he (and his allies in the Supreme Court) might not consider himself limited by such a petty document as the Constitution.

They will probably argue, among other things, that since his first and second terms weren't consecutive (because the second was stolen from him  ::)  ), that provision doesn't apply to him.
