Ever since the GOP tore down "the fairness doctrine" "Fox Lies" turned itself into a 100% GOP Lies and Propaganda channel masquerading as "news".  Unfortunately, they also hooked a lot of males b/c of they carried a lot of sports which BTW was great marketing on their part.  Sadly, Murdoch is and has always been on the wrong side of history and took his views to millions via Fox Lies.  At this point, the MAGAs are only parroting what they hear on Fox Lies as "the truth".  Essentially, they are living in a MAGA-encased "reality bubble" where they continue supporting and donating millions of $ to a .01% faction which has fooled them all into thinking they have THEIR best interest in play.  The underlying facts are they are trying to return the USA to a state where "private oligarchs" control much to all of the wealth and business of the country as it was before Roosevelt's "New Deal" when people finally wrestled control of the country from that class the first time.   We are now standing as close as they have been in a long time to actually doing that.

Make no mistake, the flow of hidden, unaccountable dark monies into the GOP coffers was a another step when they dismantled (campaign limits) which allowed the creation of super pacs.

One really has to step back and look at events post Nixon / Reagan and just watch the dominoes fall:  "The Fairness doctrine", ... campaign finance, the voting rights act, ... and so many more.

IDK how a country as modern and educated as the USA has fallen for this for so long. However, a lot of it can be traced to the asswipes like Murdoch (Koch, ...) putting their fingers and monies in the pockets of the GOP who then espouse flash cultural points (religion, abortion, marriage equality, ...)  to blind their supporters to what they are really "up to..." while binding them into lemmings.

Unbelievable when you really just start listing the dominoes but then again, people always wondered the same things about Germany and Hitler.   V.

Not just the dark money, but Wall Street itself is rallying behind Trump again, for the exact reasons you state.
"The growing support on Wall Street for the former president — including from donors who abandoned Trump after the January 6 2021 attack on the US Capitol — comes as the Republican candidate pledges to slash taxes and eliminate government regulation if elected."
(From the FT 30 May, 2024 https://www.ft.com/content/f85801ff-3de4-4c56-a729-6f585c08ef1d "Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman likely to back Donald Trump" )

Wasn't it Reagan and Thatcher who deregulated the financial markets, which ultimately resulted in the 2008 subprime crash?

Honestly, I don't know why that alone didn't end this madness in its tracks.

Lyle, that's great / awesome!. I'm clipping that and forwarding to my 88 YO MAGA bat-shit crazy GOP voting relative - not that she will even bother reading it. It's amazing how Fox Lies has dulled all her reasoning skills and senses for what's best for her kids and grandkids.  I bite my tongue way too often and just shake my head.  V.

Yes, it's incredibly insensitive behaviour. My late mom liked him but she still called him a baboon. Typical bully behaviour, making fun of someone with a disability. Ugh. I'll be mailing that to my sis as well!

European Parliament elections have started. I really wonder whether these 'far right' parties will actually make the gains they think they are. I would never vote for them myself. I can't vote for anyone who runs on a platform of hate. They will gain seats, that's a certainty.

Not that I'm terribly impressed with the centre parties, they're too slow in reacting to people's concerns. And the real left is just too much head in the clouds, spending money that doesn't exist.

I do hope Ursula Vonderleyen gets a second term, she's been the only one with balls so far compared to her predecessors.

The Dutch gave them 7 seats, from 1, out of a total of 32, so that's a major win.

Europe didn't turn fascist overnight, as some might have hoped. The center held its ground with a comfortable majority. As it should be, imo.

The Right and Far Right did make some significant gains, especially in the four largest European economies, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, as well as Austria (which can be borderline fascist as a standard) so that was not good news. Overall, they moved from about 20% to 25% of the seats, which will give them enough voice to alert the center that certain issues, like illegal migration and the cost of living, need to be better managed.

The Left and Greens lost the most, which might not forebode well for Climate Change necessities, as it was specifically the under-30's that voted more to the right than expected. Despite awareness of this global issue, Europe's younger professionals need more assurances about their future. So they made that clear.

France lost the most, with the ruling center, under Macron, getting about 15% as opposed to Marine Le Pen's far right party getting 31%. As a result he called in snap elections (for Parliament) at the end of the month. Either he gets the mandate back or he becomes a lame duck president until the next presidential elections in 2027. A gamble.

Ursula Vonderleyen celebrated victory for her centrist coalition, I think it could have been more muted. Politicians...

Trump had a rally in Vegas yesterday at the hottest time of the day when the temps are 100°+. Press people had written about the advisibility of such a thing and that his supporters could be affected and Trump always keeps them waiting. So he mentions this but wonders why nobody is ever concerned for '"him". (Boo hoo.) Marjorie T. Green was there to equate Trump with Jesus because "they're both convicted felons." In every recent rally he complains about the teleprompter not working and how he doesn't pay for shoddy work. And many other varied inanities. If people pay attention these rallies are all the same and NOT normal campaign rallies. He never talks about anything like policies or what might be good for the people that are there or the country at large. It's just inane blather, grievance, lies and falsehoods.

He did have one moment of truth, though, when he said to his cult:
"I don't care about you, I just want your vote. I don't care."

Yes, and no.

Ultimately their goals are the same, EuroSupremism (my term) and Christianity over everything else. They can be very vocal during demonstrations, but they lack a figurehead like Trump they can all rally behind. Instead, like everything else typically European, they're splintered across the spectrum of right wing ideology and politics.

That doesn't mean they're not dangerous. This year alone in Germany, for example, there have been several arrests among the far right leaders for planning a coup (not a chance in hell, but it shows their level of crazy). And the more extreme parties, openly neoNazi, have been banned altogether of taking part in the political landscape. Some, like Greece's Golden Dawn, have been declared outright terrorist organizations.

Unfortunately, Trump, who is effectively a cult leader, is having the same effect in Europe, like with Hungary's Orban, who recently visited him privately in his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida! Orban is one of the Putin buddies we have to deal with, as is Le Pen, from France, who openly supports him, and just now gained significantly in the European Elections.

There has been violence too. The Prime Minister of Slovakia was shot recently (not dead), and last week the Prime Minister of Denmark was assaulted in the street. And there have been others in recent years. Most are considered politically motivated. And let's not forget that Putin is doing his best to disrupt Europe at all levels. Unexplained explosions at munition factories, et cetera. Russia is actively sabotaging Europe and not just with cyber warfare.

The rhetoric from the far right here is the same, anti-everything; migration, abortion, gay rights, equal rights for women, less tax for the rich (good luck with that in Europe) and so forth.

No decent programs on how to deal with anything on a realistic level. Just riling up the crowds, playing the blame game. And the sycophants love it.

An American friend of mine sent me this documentary this morning. "Bad Faith" (2024).
Not a coincidence, of course, in this election year. It shows the influence of the Christian Nationalists in the U.S. and elsewhere over the past decades, the hijacking of the Republican Party, and culminating in a Trump victory to further their goals. (Christian Nationalism = Nazi; same goals and ideology). And the idiot is happy to oblige them...

Thanks for your replies, Vic.

Bad Faith is streaming on site I can watch it on and I'm going to. I've learned about it from watching some things on MSNBC the past couple years. Gullible people hear "Christian" and "Nationalism" and see nothing wrong with that.

Do you know what the Lincoln Project is? I wish they'd do some ads/videos of showing what Republicans used to be like and then show the current ones. Like a then and now look. Maybe somehow it could start jolting loose some of this Maga-inanity. There has to be a breaking point somehow. Years ago I heard it expressed that the only thing that's going to change all this is for them to lose elections over and over and over (and you'd wish that was enough but) and over and over and over again until they get tired of it and realize change is in order. An exhausting enterprise.

But  has  to  be  done.

Sure, no problem. I do try and stay aware of what's happening. As I get older I want to be safe, not an easy target. And that also means reducing the crazies running around thinking they have a mandate.

No, I haven't heard of it, will look it up. A bit of that is mentioned in Bad Faith. They go on and on about how America is founded in Christianity, yet, THE VERY FIRST AMENDMENT guarantees Freedom of Religion.

I just read the Wiki page on it.

Founded and funded by Republicans!

(Pre-Election 2020)
"Writing in The Washington Post, Jennifer Rubin said the Lincoln Project stood "head and shoulders above all the rest in the hard work of beating back President Trump and Trumpism" and wrote of the group's founders: "They made their careers helping to elect Republicans, but in the era of Trump, they have put partisanship aside in the cause of patriotism and defense of American democracy. Their ads have been the most effective and memorable of the presidential campaign, singeing Trump in a way Democrats have not quite mastered."

They must have made a difference then and let's hope they can do it again!

They pick & choose what suits them, regardless of making any coherency.
