One thing I loved about the credits was that they listed Brokeback Mountain right after Heath and Jake. It serves to separate the stars from the co stars but mostly in my mind it established the mountain as a character as well.

Her name is Roberta Maxwell.  Here is great article from the Toronto Star.

There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Randy quaid is so great. During his one year as a cast  member of Saturday Night Live, Randy, along with Robert Downey Jr. and Terry Sweeny, did a hilarious ad for Man-Beat,a fictonal  gay magazine. Randy, in a tight black t-shirt,stood behind Robert with his arms engulfing him in a very dominate way. It was 20 years ago,but It still makes me laugh.

The Two-Minute Oscars
Ten wonderful performances from 2005 that shouldn't be overlooked. But blink, and you might miss them.

Roberta Maxwell made it to these columnists' top 10.

I think Kate Mara is a great find.  I was surprised to find out that she is the same Kate Mara that sang the national anthem so many times at NY Giants games (her Grandfather was the owner).

She is a beautiful girl who played Alma Jr. equally as beautiful.  I look forward to seeing her next project.  (That's a lovely picture Alex. :) )

MY GOD!!

this is my first view of maxwell as jack's mother.  no WONDER she cares for him, she IS him.  they have both been dealt the same way by life, and they have both coped the same way.  if i hadn't seen them together, i never would have got the connection.  what casting.  lee really is a genius.  i am stunned.

and i am glad i saw this before i saw the movie; you would have had to scrape me off the floor.

I loved her performance, however brief it was.  I really felt that she knew about her son, and loved him.

Jeffrey Wells has a wonderful piece on Roberta Maxwell (including her sharing a letter she received from AP as well as a bit of Oscar buzz).

Great link!  I especially love the recording of the conversation with Maxwell.

Really, all, give it a listen.  Great insights into Jack's mother and her relationship with Ennis at the end.

Hi all,

I just had a Peter McRobbie spotting!  A bit under the weather here in SF and was watching reruns of Law and Order SVU (frankly I'd watch Chris Meloni read laundry instructions) and the Judge in the case was Peter McRobbie (very good episode - 'Ripped' in which a birth mother bears the child of another mother without knowing it).

It was very nice to see him not being the rat bastard John Twist.

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. - Karl R.
